EVEN WHEN YOU LIE TO ME by Jessica Alcott is a riveting novel about a proscriptive relationship that has the reader constantly putting themselves into the main character’s shoes. Charlie Porter is finally a senior in high school, hoping to finish the year without any problems and remain invisible. Living in the shadow of her charming, beautiful and effusive best friend Lila makes it easy for Charlie to do what she hopes. However, that changes when she meets Mr. Drummond, a new English teacher who sees Charlie for who she truly is --- intelligent, genuine and perfect just the way she is.

The way Charlie and Mr. Drummond’s relationship plays out is so beautifully complicated.

Mr. Drummond awakens a fiery passion within Charlie, both educationally and sexually. All of a sudden, Charlie is exploring literature and her own being in more depth, and is becoming a brighter, clearer version of herself. Charlie’s shyness vanishes when she’s around Mr. Drummond --- his charisma is so scintillating that everything he says puts a smile on her face. Yet, he is still her teacher and nothing can come out of it. At this point, readers are yearning for Charlie and Mr. Drummond to be together.  A relationship so forbidden is so coveted by the reader and Charlie.

The way Charlie and Mr. Drummond’s relationship plays out is so beautifully complicated. Mr. Drummond’s conflicted morality and Charlie’s desire to be loved causes bumps along the way, but some problems between them seemed trivial and could have been avoided all together. The ending may be surprising for some, yet I felt it was really necessary. It was an excellent display of Charlie’s character development.

EVEN WHEN YOU TO LIE TO ME is an honest novel that does not shy away from discussing some intense topics. Charlie’s personal growth is my favorite aspect of the book, especially since I’m a senior in high school, myself. I genuinely love Charlie’s character --- she has a passionate love for literature and sincerely cares for the people around her. Jessica Alcott creates a novel that will be enjoyed by many, as they take a ride on the Charlie-Drummond coaster.
