Claudia
Strongheart by Jim Fergus

5
This is the last book of three about the 1000 White women that the government sent west to marry American Indians. This is written as lost journals of May Dodd and Molly McGill. It is so interesting to see how these two women and the other White women assimilated into the Indian culture. The book is historical fiction and reading ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN and THE VENGEANCE OF MOTHERS would make this last book easier to understand. Excellent story.

The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg

5
A delightful story of a found family amidst grief. Arthur Moses's beloved wife, Nola, has died, and Arthur spends every day at the cemetery having lunch with her. He reads the gravestones of those surrounding her grave, and feels a special closeness with them, as if they are speaking to him. He encounters a young girl, Maddy, who comes to the cemetery to get away from the kids at school who treat her meanly. Her mom died two weeks after Maddy was born. Her father never speaks about her mom. Arthur and Maddy start a friendship. Arthur has a neighbor, Lucille, who is grieving a loss of her own, joins this duo at Arthur's home. They become a found family, leaning on each other. Beautiful. I loved it!

Killer Knight at the Museum (A Paranormal Cozy Mystery) (Museum of Magical Artefacts Book 1) by A. A. Albright

4
A quirky yet awesome who-done-it magical tale that had me trying to nab the killer when a suit of armor came to life and murdered a man at the museum. I loved Annie, a witch with unusual powers.

Deny Tomorrow: A Navy SEAL Romance (Tomorrow Series) by Ann Heathman

5
I can never get enough of reading this author as her words are so detailed that her words linger in my head. I liked the feisty Arianna who took an assignment to tell the plight of women who were treated badly; she wanted to tell the world how they suffered. I really liked Zach, the leader of a mercenary group, assigned to take out a dictator and ended up saving Arianna.

The Extractor - A Jack Storm Spy Thriller: Assassination Espionage Mission by Ethan Jones

5
Wow, oh wow!! I loved reading Jack's awesome story, and my heart went out for him to lose his wife and young daughter. From the first chapter I knew that I would love this book, and I happily and quickly read, not ever wanted to put this book down as it was non-stop action. Now I have to beg, borrow or steal to see what Jack will do next!!

Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

5
Especially with all that’s going on in the world, this is a great time to read this book. It will redeem your faith in people. It’s what doing for others without acknowledgment means. It’s heartwarming, community connection, friendship and shows how one person’s actions can change so many lives.

The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife by Anna Johnston

5
This is a beautiful story. Full of love, life with teary sadness and overwhelming joy. It is an awesome read! Lots of laughs and tears. Such humanity. It will bring joy to your life.

Rosa
The Homemade God by Rachel Joyce

5
An epic story that was tragic, relatable, sometimes funny, and beautifully written. Rachel Joyce is a marvel. This story is about the Kemp family: Vic, the patriarch and successful artist and his four children: Netta, the headstrong attorney, Susan, the second born who always wanted to be first and beat Netta, Goose, the only son and wannabe artist like his father, and Iris, the baby, the quiet one. The four siblings gather at Lake Orta in Italy after learning that their father has been found dead. This story about family, love, jealousy, redemption, and rebirth is one that will stay with me for a while. I couldn't help seeing myself and my siblings in this story. Joyce has proven once again that she is a wonderful storyteller.

Tessa
Drama by Raina Telgemeier

4
Callie loves theater, especially musical theater. But she can’t sing, so instead she joins the stage crew as scenic designer. Of course, most of the book involves the drama off the stage. Two cute brothers join the crew; Callie has a crush on first one boy, then another, then a third. The lead actress has a meltdown over a failed romance. I’m certainly glad to be past that stage in life, but I just enjoyed watching it happen in the pages of this lovely graphic novel.

El Dorado Drive by Megan Abbott

4
Twisty turns. New author to me and won't be the last book I read by her.

Shelley
No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister

4
I read this book and wanted more to the story. It told of an emotional debut novel of pain and suffering, written by an introspective author, that affected a number of other people over the course of years. Some of the characters interacted, a few did not. The writing was lovely, with glimpses into the various characters feelings. I think I would have liked to have read "Theo", the mentioned novel, in full.

Linda
Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan

5
The love, friendship, and struggles between the two sisters which influence and affect the lives of so many others is such an emotional ride. I looked back in my own family and reflected on my grandmother and her brother who, because of a family feud, didn’t speak to each other for years. It was so sad, so much time lost, and so many people affected. This was a great story and our book club all loved it.

Judy

4
Rhys Kinnick suddenly has unexpected visitors—two grandchildren he has barely met. His daughter has disappeared; Rhys leaves his hermit-like existence to try to find her, but runs into complications from her husband, who is planning to join a cult. Sophie is a FBI agent, talented in Mixed Martial Arts and proficient in technology. All of these skills are important in her work. The opening pages of the book bring back memories of a traumatic past that she hasn’t completely resolved. In a period of a few days she faces life and death situations where she has to use all of her resources. This novel is a standalone, page-turning story and the first book of a series.

Easy Prey by A. B. Whelan

5
Brooke had been blinded by a jealous boyfriend years ago when she was a teenager and she wanted to live independently from her parents. She was wealthy after winning a huge amount of money in a lottery. She was doing well with the help of her parents, her sister Jules and a hired caregiver. Brooke was found dead in her bathtub from a suspected suicide. When Jules was going through Brooke’s belongings, she discovered that Brooke had a secret. She was in love with a man who was wealthy, charming, exciting, mysterious, owed her money and had disappeared. Jules began an investigation and learned that he was a conman. She took on the challenge to get revenge for her sister and other women he had conned. Twisted novel.

The Woman Who Wasn’t by Gary B.

3
Evelyn, a psychologist, lives a very regimented life. Her routine is set by the clock. Jacob, one of her patients, claims to have seen her the previous night while at one of his sessions with her. Evelyn knows she wasn’t where he saw her. They decide to investigate to see if someone is impersonating her. They find Evelyn’s double and learn that the other person was created to be her replacement. This sci-fi psychological thriller is not of a genre that I choose to read. I’m sure a lover of sci-fi would give it 5 stars.

Tara’s Angels, Tara, Ginger and Sloane are self proclaimed amateur sleuths and take on the challenge to find out who the body belongs to, how long has it been there and why was it there. It is the 5th book in a series and can be read alone.

Gingered: A Memoir by Ryan G. Murphy

5
This was a fun book to read. Ryan’s memories from his childhood and into adulthood with humor that brings a smile to your face and a recall of some of your own situations. The detail in his writing allows the reader to be a spectator to an actual event. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.

Donna
The Eagle’s Shadow by Michael Reit

4
This novel is unlike any WWII book I’ve read in the past. The story begins in 1938 when the Third Reich is beginning their reign of terror and entering Austria and then spreading to the Czech Republic. It centers on three main characters; Felix, a Jew in Austria, Karl a member of the Third Reich and Adela a translator in the Czech Republic with access to useful information to share with spies. The reader learns how the Third Reich plans for successful invasions. They first unsettle the population of the towns they enter. The next step is to weaken the government by finding who will be compliant to their demands and removing those who will not, along with the Jews and prominent citizens, and then prepare for the German invasion.

Harriet is a retired widow and conducts a book club at the local women’s prison. Violet is a young woman and has been imprisoned for causing an accident that caused the death of a woman. Frank is the retired husband whose wife was killed in the accident and donates his time as a handyman at the library. This story takes place in a rural town in Maine where these three unlikely people’s lives intersect in an unusual way. This is a heartwarming novel of guilt, letting go, second chances and forgiveness.

Anita
Jews in the Garden by Judy Rakowsky

5
This was a very interesting nonfiction book about a survivor of the Holocaust who returns many years later with his cousin Judy Rakowsky to try to find a cousin who survived, but no one has located her. She and her family were being hidden where they lived in Poland by a local farmer. Sadly they were discovered, and Hena supposedly was the only one who lived. The rest of her family were killed by Polish partisans who shot them and buried their bodies in the garden.

Betty
Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

5
This is a beautifully-written story about the impact of quiet generosity, compassion, and community, inspired by the kind acts of the main character, Theo. The themes of connecting with others, healing past hurts, and finding hope comes through the author's elegant prose. The message of simple kindness contributes significantly to its popularity. After reading this, you want to be a kinder person.

Nonie
Regretting You by Colleen Hoover

3
The book was too predictable for me. Some of the descriptive writing was very good. I found the storyline of the Morgan and Noah getting together a little bizarre.

Carol
We the People: A History of the Constitution by Jill Lepore

5
A fascinating history of our U.S. constitution, our country, our people, our culture, our values throughout the years. Understanding this history helps us to understand our conflicted and troubling times today.

Debra
A Simple Kindness In Flatsboro by Heather Norman Smith

5
I was immediately drawn to Andy and his neighborhood in Flatsboro, where the tea is sweet and a sense of community is palpable and strong. I especially enjoyed the intergenerational friendships that formed and grew into chosen family. I love second chance stories and this heartwarming novel was filled with more than one. These second chances were made possible by intentional acts of kindness, forgiveness and much extending of grace. The carefully chosen words and gentle storytelling in this book were a comforting balm for me. As in Flatsboro, may we learn to count our blessings more than our troubles, just like Andy did. I encourage you to read this book, spread kindness and love others well.

Rose
The Boxcar Librarian by Brianna Labuskes

4
In 1936, Millie is trying to uncover the mystery surrounding The Boxcar Library, in which two women, Alice and Colette, went to Montana, but only one returned. No one is willing to talk to Millie about what happened. So she digs into the story. In 1924, Alice, with money from her father, the mayor, opens a library. She hires a miner's daughter, Colette, to run the library for her. But, Colette has a motive - she needs to find out who killed her beloved father and why. This is not only a mystery, but also a historical fiction novel about the boxcar library that brought books to the people of Montana, miners and their families. Interesting. Based on historical info, but the mystery is fiction.

Wanda
Crooks by Lou Berney

5
I really enjoyed it. The characters were well developed and each one was unique. In the end, the one who was thought to be a loser while growing up turned out to have the best life.

LisaMarie
Before Dorothy by Hazel Gaynor

4
Very enjoyable read. How they mixed the characters in, for example - the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Wicked Witch and even Oz himself. It took you back to The Wizard of Oz and it was a nice, easy read.

Barbara
The Girl in the Green Dress by Mariah Fredericks

5
I totally enjoyed this book! It was interesting seeing into the lives of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and life in general in the Gilded Age. The book had a number of twists and turns.

Beth
The Ghostwriter by Julie Clark

4
A very good mystery involving a woman hired to ghostwrite her father’s memoir.

Jasminka
Favorite Daughter by Morgan Dick

5
I enjoyed this book very much snd was sad when I finished it because I wanted to stay with Mickey and Arlo and see their story continue. Morgan Dick has crafted both her main characters with love, humor, and compassion, even though both are flawed human beings. The plot is original and explores how their father’s life, behavior, and relationship to them has affected and shaped each woman in a different way and created majority of issues they have had to deal with. The crew of supporting characters is also wonderful and everyone feels as complex and real as flesh-and-blood people.

Jean
Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

4
This YA novel tells the story of a middle schooler who moves to FL from MN. As the new kid, he has the typical trouble making friends, but soon ends up with a loyal, but quirky group. As with any Hiaasen story, there is a big environmental theme, this time about saving rare owls who burrow underground. Much laughter ensues, often at the expense of both kid and adult bullies. Not to spoil it, but the good guys win.

Suzanne
Regretting You by Colleen Hoover

4
Great dynamics between mother and daughter. Heavyweight, but important issues dealing with death, adultery and trust.

Aimee
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah

5
Kristin does an incredible job of pulling you into her main characters and their storyline. While it was tough reading Elsa and her family's Dust Bowl journey, I know there are thousands of Americans who lived through similar, if not worse, years. Historical fiction can be hard to read, but so necessary to appreciate what our ancestors lived through.

Edith
James by Pervival Everette

5
Wonderful story. A read that really holds your interest.

Lynda
The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson

3
I'm biased against historical nonfiction, but this was a book club pick and I wanted to learn more about my SC state history (for better or worse.) I did learn in minute detail the role SC played, which lead to the Civil War. I can't fault the author's writing style.

The Briar Club by Kate Quinn

4
A very good book for book clubs as it has many issues to discuss and gives a great picture of life in the 1950s and role of women in that time period.

Donna
Nemesis by Gregg Hurwitz

4
I love the ORPHAN X books! Yes, each one seems a little more gory than the last one, and the descriptions of the weapons go completely over my head. But I love the character Evan Smoak and watching him evolve from his training as an assassin to a human being has been so interesting. This one deals with his weapons supplier and only friend Tommy Sojack. Evan thinks he has sold out to the bad guys and goes after him. And watching Evan dealing with teenager Joey has been so humorous.

Gabriel
Stone Fruit by Lee Lai

3
STONE FRUIT shares a down-to-earth story of relationships complicated by depression, trauma, and difficulty communicating. It was slow-paced and low on plot, allowing the focus to remain on the characters and their evolving connections to one another. I appreciated that there were no easy resolutions or reunions for anyone. Even when Bron and Ray have legitimate reasons to pull away from each other and their families to deal with their own issues, they still have to accept how that changes those relationships. There’s no way back to what was. That said, I wish there had been something more of a resolution by the end of the book. I wanted to see Bron develop more, ending with more self-awareness about her behavior.

Joan
The Women by Kristin Hannah

5
I will recommend this book to all my reading friends.

Lori
The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

5
Engaging descriptive characters that made you feel like you were right there with them. Great story of strong women making a difference.

Joanne
Sula by Toni Morrison

4
This book is poetry. The story is a tough one, as a lot of Ms. Morrison’s work is tough. But the friendships are deep and powerful. She is a master storyteller.

Becky
Heart the Lover by Lily King

5
Witty, wise, intimate and incredibly touching. First loves and those heart-wrenching what ifs. Loved it!

Michelle
Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez

5
Aside from me crushing on Jimenez for her ability to write such a un-put-downable love story, what amazes me the most is her genius in weaving in such very serious and timely subjects such as anxiety, panic attacks, and kidney disease. Reading her Author's Note at the end about her own experience with kidney disease makes me appreciate this story even more. Bravo.

3
Too slow, too much detail about the stone business.

Cheryle
The Running Grave by Robert Galbraith

4
I have read all of the books in this series. This was the second time trying to read this book. The author has chosen a topic that dominated this epic novel that I am not particularly fond of, religious cults. Partners in their detective agency, Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott, are hired to try to get close to the son of a prominent person and extricate him from the cult. Robin volunteers to go undercover and that is the major focus of the book. I prefer the interactions between the partners and not so much the way this was handled. I did read all 945 pages this time. I look forward to the new book just being released.

Cheryle
Apostle's Cove by William Kent Krueger

5
This book was written in a manner I am not used to with this author, dual timelines. If more authors wrote like William Kent Krueger I would enjoy them more. The way the story was told the past timeline clearly related the story without giving anything away. The present timeline pulled all the elements together and presented a plausible conclusion. Set in the familiar northern Minnesota, the story unfolds with a brutal murder of a young mother. Cork O'Connor is just starting his professional career back where he grew up and where his father held the position before him. Given all the facts of the case, Cork thinks he has found the murderer and he sends him for prison for life. Now some twenty years later he reviews the case.

Gabriel
The Z Word by Lindsay King-Miller

2
For a horror story, this was very emotionally flat. At several points, I was waiting for characters to react -- to show some anger or grief or whatever, for their interpersonal drama to finally get deeper than who was fucking who -- and nothing ever happened. I guess the author was trying to keep it light so they could still have the campy moments without it being jarring, but it didn't work. The tone was still off. It was just also kind of dull.

Sharon
Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy

I See You've Called in Dead by John Kenney

5
I loved this novel! I laughed and I cried. This book is a delight! Bud Stanley is an obituary writer. One night, after hearing from his ex-wife that her mother died, he writes his own obituary. Accidentally, he posts the obituary to his newspaper and the obituary goes viral. His employer is not amused. While Ben is on leave from work, he meets a woman, Clara, who attends wakes and funerals of people she doesn't know. Along with his best friend, Tim, Ben starts doing this, too. When a major event happens, Bud needs to examine life, and how an obituary should reflect that. Read this book!

Another great mystery. Compelling story. Keeps you turning the pages.

Amy
Madame Fourcade's Secret War: The Daring Young Woman Who Led France 's Largest Spy Network Against Hitler by Lynne Olson

5
MADAME FORCADE'S SECRET WAR by Lynne Olson is an incredible true story about a woman who led one of the largest spy networks in France during WWII. Marie-Madeleine Fourcade is tough, brave, and endlessly resourceful - a real-life hero who doesn’t get nearly enough credit in history books. Olson’s writing makes it read like a thriller, even though it’s all true. Totally gripping and inspiring.

Sandy
All the Sinners Bleed by S. A. Cosby

2
I enjoyed this thriller very much, but it is not for the faint of heart. Some of the murders are very brutal and shocking. But I wanted to see if the sheriff caught the bad guy before more people were found murdered.

Pam
The Witch's Orchard by Archer Sullivan

Strangers in Time by David Baldacci

4
“We all need someone at certain times in our lives. It makes the inevitable pain lessened and the periods of happiness exalted.” STRANGERS IN TIME transports you back to 1944 London during the height of the bombing campaign where you’ll meet 14-year old Charlie, 15-year old Molly and their unexpected ally Ignatius Oliver. The three come from very different backgrounds, but over time rediscover the family they have lost in each other. This is a perfect pick for book clubs, especially those (like us) who love historical fiction!

Julie
My Friends by Fredrik Backman

4
Fredrik Backman has the ability to bring the characters in his books to life in such a way that you feel as if you truly know them, while at the same time achieving a perfect balance between humor and gravity in their story. He captures human emotions in writing like very few authors can do. There are SO many great lines in this coming-of-age novel about friendship and belonging. I started tabbing them, and soon realized I was tabbing nearly every page. This one’s going to stick with me. Well done!

Judy
Secret Relations by Rebecca Forster

5
Very exciting. A young girl’s illegal immigrant boyfriend goes missing. Cannot go to police. She enlists the help of Finn O’Brien, a detective friend of her mother.

Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books by Kristen Miller

5
Such a great story about a small town and their fears and concerns about books. Having grown up in a small town, the story rang so true. Perceived or real transgressions can last a lifetime. Loved how the story was laid out and told from different perspectives.

Play Nice by Rachel Harrison

5
October means spooky vibes and this book was a perfect fit. Three sisters with totally different personalities, inherit their mother's reportedly possessed house. Clio decides to flip the house, but as creepy things start happening, stirring memories from her childhood, she starts to wonder if her mom was not so crazy after all. Her sisters are skeptical, but after witnessing some unusual events rethink their opinions. This book may make you wary of those old house creaks and quirks.

Linda
The Last Light Over Galveston by Jennifer L. Wright

4
Good telling of the Galveston hurricane of 1900 with a side story of how the main character ended up being there at that time in history. Nice mystery added to the story plus the really good descriptions of the destruction and death of so many people in that hurricane. Really good book.

Denise
Christmas with the Queen by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb

4
A completely enjoyable book based upon true events in 1952 when Queen Elizabeth II must make her first Christmas radio broadcast. The book focuses on the yearly holiday preparations for both the royal family, its staff, and the BBC correspondents. It’s a look behind the scenes of the BBC, the kitchen (with the wonderful foods being created), along with the frenzy involved in decorating the palaces and accommodating the comings and goings of all involved. You witness the Queen and Prince Philip’s commitments and sacrifices. It was enjoyable to read about Prince Philip’s love of the ocean while accompanying the Queen in their travels on behalf of the crown in greeting their colonies. The entire book humanizes the royal family also.

What a great read! Winspear ties up the end of the Maisie Dobbs series wonderfully along with it being a satisfying mystery based in history.

The Dead Husband Cookbook by Danielle Valentine

5
I could not stop reading. One of those books where nothing is at it seems and no matter what you think you know, you don't. It will definitely keep you guessing until the end. Oh, and the best surprise is the fabulous recipes included within that offer clues.

Suzanne
Reckoning by Catherine Coulter

4
This is my first time reading this author, but I will look for more of her books in the future. A 12-year- old girl is awakened by a noise and looks out of her bedroom to see two men with guns quietly climbing up the stairs. They do not see her as she quietly shuts her door. Instantly, she opens her window and climbs down on her tree to escape. She hears two pops and knows it's gunfire and knows she's next.

Maryanne
My Friends by Fredrik Backman

His best book yet. Great empathy with the teens, even as they age. The mystery is ongoing.

Elizabeth
American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

5
A heartbreaking novel about migrants leaving Mexico for a better life in the USA. The obstacles faced by those running from cartels and women being abused along the journey were so vividly described it felt like I was there. This was a book I will never forget.

The Little Liar by Mitch Albom

5
This book is compact, but it's definitely packed with all the feels. The story is narrated by the angel of Truth and takes place in Greece during World War II. Four main characters' stories are interwoven, and Albom tells an unforgettable story about truth and lies, perceptions and redemption. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend!

Come Rain or Come Shine by Jan Karon

5
I was decluttering and trying to part with some excess books when I came across a brand new copy of COME RAIN OR COME SHINEhine by Jan Karon. I don't remember buying it, but I opened it and began reading. Even after a lapse, Jan Karon's characters were easy and fun to catch up with. This book is the story of preparations for the wedding of Dooley and Lace, a farm wedding with a hundred things that could go wrong, and some do. Every reader of Karon's Father Tim/Mitford stories knew long ago that this marriage would happen, but experiencing the interactions between characters was fun and satisfying. Jan Karon has entertained me for many an hour with her fictional characters who are more real than real people. Glad I found this book!!

The Sirens by Emilia Hart

4
Was a great change of a story for me. A little mystery and mystical. Twin sisters in 1999 who have been taken on a ship as prisoners to a new country to be sold as slaves or wives. Being in water is detrimental to them. But as history shows the ship does not make it to its land destination. Forward to 2009 and we meet two sisters who are many years apart who are told they cannot be in the water. The younger sisters is in trouble and goes to find her older sister for help. But her sister isn’t there. She finds out they are both having the same dream about women in a boat and drowning. The questions begin and the younger sister sets out to find the answers. This was much better than I had expected. My description isn’t great, but it’s good.

The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

I love how this author develops characters and weaves personalities into the relationships.

Jeanne
All the Dark Places by Terri Parlato

5
ALL THE DARK PLACES by Terri Parlato is a spellbinding, mesmerizing, bone-chilling well-written thriller from beginning to end. After a group of friends get together to celebrate the birthday of their friend, Jay, one of those friends brutally murdered Jay. His wife Molly works with the police and FBI to find his killer, Molly struggles with a deep-rooted secret of her own that happened to her when she was a little girl and has traumatized her her entire life. I really liked the writing style of this author and thought the storyline as well as the creation and development of the characters was outstanding. The twists and turns and suspense had me reading this book all night trying to figure out who the murderer was.

She Didn't See It Coming by Shari Lapena

4
4.5 stars. I thought this was one of Shari Lapena's better books. Bryden is running late to get her daughter from daycare. She looks down and in that moment, runs into a Tesla driven by a very handsome man. They exchange info. Weeks later, Bryden is once again late. Her husband Sam receives a call to pick up their daughter. But this time, no one knows where Bryden is. The last time she was seen, she was working from home, but now, her purse, PC, keys, and car are all there, but she isn't. She is reported as missing. Where is she, what happened? Friends and family are surprised that she is missing, but then some cracks in the couple's perfect life are exposed. Surprises at every turn! This was quite a surprise! I really enjoyed it.

Abby
The Quiet Librarian by Allen Eskens

3
A stand-alone Allen Eskens book. Read with my book club. We all liked it,although felt we had to suspend reality a few times during the book. It's a dual timeline with one timeline taking place in the 1990s during the Bosnian war, a war I seemed to know little about. Interesting and tense storyline throughout.

Terri
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

5
Fabulous insight into Sybil and her world. Also a reminder of how lasting the written on paper letter is!

Sean
The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger

5
This is now the 4th book from William Kent Krueger that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Here, a stand-alone tale that is seemingly a simple murder mystery and delves into so much more. The book is a great look a small town America in the late 50s and deals with race, war, inclusion, violence, depravity, loss, family, and so much more. The book could have went many ways but the author never lost focus. All the characters were fleshed out and got time to shine. Its easy to root for and against these characters, and you want things to go well but they don't always. This was a wonderful read.

Joni
An Inside Job by Daniel Silva

4
A little too much local description, I found myself skimming a lot and I prefer to read and savor every word. I’ve found the last two Silva books that way as well. The story got lost in scenery, cars, food etc. descriptions. I’ve read all Silva's books, but this might be my last. The murders could have been solved quicker.

Debbie
Spirit Crossing by William Kent Krueger

3
One more book after SPIRIT CROSSING in the Cork O’Connor series; this has been an interesting journey. Waaboo, now a seven-year-old, has visions and hears spirits. While picking blueberries, Waaboo locates the grave of a young woman. Of course, the mystery does not end with the shallow grave. Waaboo aides in finding another dead woman. The difference between the horrible death of a privileged Caucasian and the tragic killing of an Indian woman speak of the bias still evident in America. Again, the death of these young women coincides with the fight of industry and the environment. So many of the special characters remain in the story: Henry, the Prophet, and Annie. Annie fight a brain cancer and questions God’s plan for her life.

Paula

Return to Sender by Craig Johnson

5
Craig Johnson's books are always packed with so much information. RETURN TO SENDER was another one of those books. It was easy to get into. I learned about a new area in Wyoming that I want to visit and another new person (the real person that is the subject of the book) I plan to meet.

Susan
Wayward Girls by Susan Wiggs

4
I always enjoy reading Susan Wiggs's books and this one was no exception. It's hard to think about the abuse these girls went through at the hands of religious people that were to be helping them. It was interesting to see how these strong-willed girls survived and broke free with strength and determination.

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

3
3.5 of 5 stars. In 1940, three women, Osla, Mab, and Beth, are chosen to work at Bletchley Park. When one of the women is put in an asylum, she is scheduled for a lobotomy and is terrified that she won't be able to get out. She reaches out to the other two women, begging them to help her. She believes that someone at Bletchley Park has betrayed her and is a traitor to their country. The book goes back and forth between the women's time at Bletchley Park, their relationships with men, and the time in the asylum, plus finding out who is the traitor. It also focuses on the engagement of Philip and Elizabeth and the royal wedding in 1947, and Philip's relationship with Osla. Dual timelines, WWII, secrecy were interesting, but TOO long!

Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie

4
4 of 5 stars. Hercule Poirot is called in to solve a murder case. After a Hallowe'en party, a young girl is found dead. The group was gathering when a young girl mentions that she witnessed a murder. Shortly thereafter, she is dead. Another person has gone missing and as Poirot questions everyone, he notices some details that don't add up. Naturally, I missed their significance, but nothing gets past Poirot. A short mystery perfect for the spooky season!

The Ride of Her Life by Elizabeth Letts

5
Exactly the type of book everyone in America should read because it reminds us of what America used to be like. When we open a door to a stranger, when we would stop and lend a helping hand, some food or a blanket to someone who looks like they were in need. It’s also a book about perseverance and tenacity.

Special Agent Jameson Danner is assigned to the case, and Mackenzie is working alongside the FBI to solve the case. She says she knows one of the execs, Eleanor Eden. Other execs won't meet with them. Stanley is missing, Cass is working on another project, and the other two have more excuses. As Danner and Mackenzie uncover more info, they realize that Trevor changed his will, and his interest in the company was waning in favor of a new project. Then the big twist comes - although clues were there all along! A good thriller/mystery.

Flowed smoothly, but a somewhat slow-developing plot.

Kathryn
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch with Jeffrey Zaslow

5
A young terminally ill college professor speaks to a large group on the importance of overcoming obstacles and enabling the dreams of others. His talk about how to live also includes some intelligent humor. I still pick up the small book and read a chapter or a few pages here and there.

Kathryn
The Beantown Girls by Jane Healey

5
My mother was a World War II army nurse over in Europe. Even though this book is considered historical fiction, it is based on the Red Cross clubmobile program that existed in Europe during World War II. Their real experiences and emotional growth carried many parallels to my mother's experiences. I found it fascinating.

The One You're With by Lauren K. Denton

2
I have read Lauren K. Denton's other books and really enjoyed them, but this book was not her best. The story deals with a married couple with children who deal with an expected child from the husband's past. They question their marriage and life choices.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

2
Lowen Ashleigh is on the verge of financial ruin when she is offered a very lucrative job finishing the remaining books in a series a very popular author, Verity, has started. Verity was injured in an auto accident and cannot complete her contract. While looking through the author’s material, Lowen comes across a manuscript Verity has written which explains her very dubious past. While the story itself was good, the amount of unnecessary sexual detail, which brought nothing to the story, was way over the top.

Marika
Good People by Patmeena Sabit

5
Provocative novel about an immigrant Afghanistan family who aspire to embrace all that the U.S. can offer them, but as a result has their daughter become too American? Is Zorah Sharaf a good girl according to American standards, or has she truly brought shame to the family? Readers learn about Zorah's life (or think they do) from what their family and friends say about her. But which is the truth? Outstanding book that I can't wait to suggest for book club.

5
Excellent.

Barbara
Murder on the Serpentine by Anne Perry

4
I was sad this was the last book in the series. I binge read the whole series and greatly enjoyed it. There was intrigue and humor throughout the whole series, and it didn't require blood and guts to get to the point. The references to history in each book pushed me to the internet to do more research into what was going on in the UK during that time frame. I would wholeheartedly recommend the series to anyone!

It Is Wood, It Is Stone by Gabriella Burnham

3
After her husband, Dennis, receives an opportunity to teach in São Paulo, Brazil, Linda is hesitant to go because she has been contemplating leaving him. However, she does agree, and after they move she is provided with a maid, Marta, who handles many household activities. Since Dennis is consumed with his job, writing a paper for the provost, Linda becomes more restless, without much to occupy herself. She meets a woman who captivates her. They escape together for several days, but Linda wonders if it is worth losing her husband. Marta sits with Linda and gives her some life lessons. This story started out well, it told the story of a lonely wife looking for love and attention, but it got tiresome to me.

Rose
The Burning by Linda Castillo

5
Linda Castillo's heroine Kate Burkholder, formerly Amish, is a tough cop. When two of her officers find a crime in progress, a man being burned alive, she is thrown into facing the possibility that her brother is involved in it somehow. He had hired the dead man and has a reason for wanting the man dead. A woman in another Amish community was found dead and Kate believes there is a connection. She recognizes the traditions of the Amish run deep, and knows that there is a rogue group taking justice into their own hands. Always a good mystery from Linda Castillo. Loved the interactions between her and Tomasetti, her husband and fellow law enforcement officer.

4
A friends to lovers romance. Bree has been in love with Nathan since high school when he knelt before her to tie her shoe. Nathan has been in love with Bree since then, too. After she was in an accident which derailed her ballet career and admission to Juilliard, and pushed him away. He was lost. Then they reunited after he was signed to the LA Sharks NFL team and she was teaching dance at her studio. Bree has always told him they are just friends, not willing to know that her feelings aren't reciprocated. Bree accidentally spills her feelings to a journalist, things start to change when his agent tells them they need to fake a romantic relationship. This is a sweet romance, only Bree and Nathan can't admit their true feelings!

Dale
The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon

5
If you love historical fiction then you will love this book. Loved how her words just flowed throughout the book. Great read about a true midwife and her commitment to her community. Now to read another by Ariel because I loved her writing style so much.

Jayme
Pied Piper by Nevil Shute

5
The story was written in 1942; it is about Howard, a 70-year-old British man who, during holiday in France in the spring of 1940, must leave France as the war is escalating and the border is closing. He is asked to take several British children back with him, and as they try to leave the country their harrowing adventure begins. The story was so good. I could not put the last quarter of the book down. What I found extraordinary was the hope that the author felt (he wrote it during the war) that the war would end soon and everything would be fine.

Joan
The Homemade God by Rachel Joyce

3
Set in atmospheric Lake Orta, Italy, this family drama revolves around four siblings and the role each plays in the family upon the death of their father. The writing is beautiful, but I must say the first part of the book moved a bit slowly for me until a dramatic scene changed everything, and I raced to the finish! The author tied up all the loose ends beautifully! Especially liked it because I have been to Lake Orta!

Linda
The Secret Life of Sunflowers by Marta Molnar

4
Our book club is reading this book for October, a historical fiction about the Van Gogh's sister-in-law, who helped bring his art to the world after he passed away. We definitely recommend this book.

Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

5
Oh, this book! Please pick it up and read it. A heartwarming story of generosity and kindness, Theo is what the world needs more of. I am surprised this book is not being talked about more. Like Theo gives paintings, I wish I could give this book to everyone. Every town needs a Theo!

I like the part about Lucy’s love life with Cosmo. I was really rooting for them. I did love that Lucy was so independent in a society where women just weren’t, but I was still happy when she found love and happiness with Cosmo. I like historical fiction.

Wanda
Running Deep by Tom Clavin

4
Very intense story. Based on a true life experience of the deadliest submarine in World War II and about the bravery and survival of those involved. Page-turner. Wonderful description of characters and surroundings of the story.

Judie
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

5
I loved the epistolary style of this book which reminded me of the power of the written letter. Evans carefully shares a little bit of the life story of Sybil Van Antwerp with letters to and from her. We learn of her family, her work and her values and even a mystery in her life. I am the lucky recipient of family letters dating back to 1875 and they are a treasure.

MH
Shaw Connolly Lives to Tell by Gillian French

4
Shaw, the protagonist of this book, is a forensic specialist who is also the sister of a girl who disappeared years ago. Now she is being harassed and stalked by a man claiming to be her sister’s killer. Shaw has two sons and an aging father to protect as well as a younger sister. The book is hard-hitting and reads almost like a western, with lots of action and tough talk.

Nancy
The Correspondant by Virginia Evans

5
Such an enjoyable read - laughing and crying throughout the story. The epistolary format worked, rendering a slow reveal of the story over the course of the book. One of my favorite books this year.

Well written and an interesting concept. When a friend abandons another friend, how does it affect the rest of their lives?

Denise
The Hallmarked Man by Robert Galbraith

4
This book is so rich with characters! I don’t know how Robert Galbraith can come up with the all the crazy characters in each of her Comoran Strike series, but she does. I enjoy her colorful descriptions of quirky people and varied locations. Of course the unrequited love story interspersed in each book is one of the many reasons I read every book as soon as it comes out!

Sharon
The Lies They Told by Ellen Marie Wiseman

5
Difficult to read. A story of people who were displaced from their homes in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia and classified as imbeciles or defective according to some eugenics that had become popular in that time (1920s). Many of the children were taken from parents and "rehomed" or adopted by people (many of whom simply wanted cheap labor); some of the teens were sterilized without their knowledge (told they had appendicitis and had to have surgery). Many of the "feeble-minded" children or young adults were manipulated by unsuspecting children. This is not an easy book to read.

MARILYN
The Glassmaker by Tracy Chevalier

4
Having been to Italy and seen many lovey pieces of Murano glassware, I was glad to see that one of my book clubs had selected it for our next meeting. The book to moved along at a good rate and I learned a bit about the competition among the glassmaking families. Interesting that many of the prejudices and other behaviors we are experiencing today are rooted in the past for all humanity.

Run for the Hills by Kevin Wilson

Four strangers learn they are siblings by the same father but different mothers. Their father stayed with each family for awhile, then vanished from their lives and on to start another life with a different family. They journey from Boston to California together to find their father and reconcile. Very humorous but also a little sad.

Lynda
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

5
There are lots of characters, and then which train compartment each occupies, not to mention time frames. I unsuccessfully tried to solve this very complex mystery. But I loved the ending! I also love the sleuth, Hercule Poirot- quirky, charming, fastidious. There's a good reason why Christie's mysteries remain so popular.

Jo Ann

Judy
The Doorman by Chris Pavone

4
Very good, though not as gripping as his previous spy/thriller novels. Enjoyed the descriptions of Manhattan and its luxury apartments.

Rose
You'll Never Find Me by Allison Brennan

4
Margo Angelhart, a PI, is estranged from her family, and working on her own. She helps Annie escape from her abusive, violent husband. Her siblings, Tess and Jack, are working an espionage case. The cases overlap and they realize they need to work together. The estrangement is alluded to in the book, but not in detail, so perhaps there will be more in a later book in the series. I enjoyed the various cases being investigated and the sibling relationship, with its ups and downs. Looking forward to reading more of this series.

Rose
Tough Luck by Sandra Dallas

4
A delightful tale of a young girl, Haidie and her brother, Boots, setting out in 1863 to find their gold-mining father in the Colorado Territory. A homage to "True Grit", but it also reminded me a bit of "The Sting." After their elder brother sold the farm when their mom died and put them in an orphanage, Haidie makes a plan to escape, crossing the country to find her dad. Haidie disguises herself as a boy to protect herself and her brother as they join a wagon train community. They meet some characters along the way, some good, others not. She enlists the help of some to help her claim her father's fortune.

Beth
Fox by Joyce Carol Oates

4
FOX is about a pedophile. It is also about the 12- and 13-year-old girls, their parents, and, in one case, extended family whose lives are affected by the pedophile. It is not a spoiler to tell you that he dies in an apparent car accident. Francis Fox has changed his name and come to another school to teach junior-high English. Descriptions of his secret life are accurate descriptions of a pedophile. He's such a nice, handsome fellow. Everyone loves him, especially his students, especially 12-year-old girls. His death devastates everyone, especially those 12-year-olds. Then comes Part 2 and the police investigation.

Terry
Billy Boyle by James R. Benn

4
I started reading this first book of a series after a glowing review of Book 20 in this month's edition of Bookpage. While a little juvenile, it has kept my interest, and I have high hopes for the rest of the series.

Simonne
The Saints of Swallow Hill by Donna Everhart

4
Interesting book about working turpentine camps. Due to the cruelties encountered, the beginning of the book was pretty sad and frustrating. However, the main characters were extremely likable and made the book very compelling to read through.

Simonne
Small Mercies by Dennis Lehane

5
If you are offended by foul language do not read this book! A great story of South Boston (Southie) a mom, in tough times, trying to locate her 17-year-old daughter. They live in a very tough neighborhood and we get to meet all the characters there. The mom, Mary Pat, becomes a one-man wrecking crew trying to unearth the truth. A real page-turner.

Teresa

Maureen
An Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff

5
Very heartwarming story. Loved the characters.

Gabriel
Saffron and Honey by Aphy Ray

2
The plot progressed at a snail's pace. Every time it approached an interesting development or idea, it meandered away to forget about it for a couple hundred pages (or sometimes forever). It never felt like a natural breather, always an awkward drop off. The character interactions were repetitive in a way that made the characters feel increasingly shallow. There were all these languorous stretches only sparsely interspersed with plot and the characters still only reiterated the same thoughts, feelings, and dynamics. It felt like there must be nothing else about them to express.

Not Dead Yet by Phil Collins

A humble review of his wide range of talents and the challenges in his life. I learned many things I did not know.

Brian
House Justice by Mike Lawson

5
Tremendous character action with a touch of humanity thrown into the twisted world of revenge. The bad are very bad and the good guys are easy to forgive.

Sheree
My Other Heart by Emma Nanami Strenner

5
I really enjoyed this book. The mother’s daughter was taken from her when she turned her head for a minute. The mother was poor and Vietnamese and no one believed her that her child was missing. They put her on a plane back to Vietnam without her daughter. She was poor but that did not stop her of thinking about her; she never gave up looking for her. The author tried to make you think that the adopted daughter was one person when it was another daughter. Everything worked out in the end!

The Briar Club by Kate Quinn

Book club loved plot twists, strong female characters and historical fiction aspects.

Jackie

I look forward to every J. D. Robb book, she never disappoints! I feel like I’ve met her characters and the endings are always a surprise.

Colleen
Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

5
This book deserves more than 5 stars! THEO OF GOLDEN is a heartwarming novel of an older man who arrives mysteriously in a small town. While there, Theo spreads happiness to those he meets. Everyone's lives change because of Theo, although nobody really knows him. This book will warm your heart. The author's message is to spread kindness and happiness to those you meet along the way. A definite read to lift you up.

Gail
The Little Liar by Mitch Albom

5
A deeply emotional perspective of the rounding up of Polish Jews that were supposedly being sent to work camps. The 10 year-old child is influenced by a Nazi officer who finds him hiding while his parents are taken. The child believes what the Nazi officer tells him until he sees his own parents hustled onto a train. The child is so easily influenced by rewards of trust, food, and the assurance of jointing his parents but realizes this won't happen. He spends the rest of his life making up for his naivety, which is dramatic and loving. How long would it take for me to see the truth?

The Sideways Life of Denny Voss by Holly Kennedy

4
THE SIDEWAYS LIFE OF DENNY VOSS by Holly Kennedy is a gem that tugged at my heart and brought me to tears. Ms. Kennedy has penned a poignant tale with an entertaining mystery. Her representation of neurodivergence is done with respect and compassion. I especially loved the relationship between Denny and his cousin Angus. I can’t even think about the bond between Denny and George, his beloved, blind and deaf Saint Bernard, without tears in my eyes. If you’re looking for a heartwarming read, please add DENNY VOSS to your tbr list. You’ll love him.

Theresa
My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney

5
Some authors have a gift for writing one electrifying book after another. How do they do it? Where do they get their ideas? Whatever it is, Alice Feeney’s got it! If her name is on it, you can bet I’m going to read it. MY HUSBAND'S WIFE took off like a shot right away and never let up. This is one of those books that is so hard to put down because you just have to know what the heck is going on. Everyone’s got a secret or two and their own agenda. The twist level was off the charts. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out… bam, you are blindsided with another juicy twist. Your head will spin and you will be thinking, “Wait..what?” Exactly the kind of twisty thriller I adore.

Theresa
Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth

5
Oh, this book! This unputdownable, intriguing, tragic, heartwarming and beautiful book. Told in dual timelines, in one, we meet Mad Mabel, aka Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick, an 81-year-old living in the same house for almost 60 years. Her street consists of, what she calls, the usual assortment of neighbors and one deranged chihuahua. In the other, her lonely and distressing childhood. How and why did Mabel go mad? Is she really mad? It would have been so easy with all she faced at such a young age. I fell in love with many of the characters, especially Mabel, who is snarky, bold, strong and amusing. A thriller is done right when you don’t see the twists coming. Very well done, Sally Hepworth!

59 Minutes by Holly Seddon

4
Non-stop from the first chapter. The pacing is fast, tense and suspenseful. The clock is ticking and your heart is wrenching. I always love a good twist and I was pleased that I didn’t see them coming. There is one in particular that will have you a bit confused and you will think you missed something. Have no fear, all will be made clear rather quickly and give you that “ahhh ok, I get it” moment. 59 MINUTES is definitely worth the read. I look forward to checking out Holly Seddon’s previous books and keeping my eye out for her future ones.

Elizabeth
The Thread Collectors by Shaunna J. Edwards

3
Although this book had a good plot, I found some of it rather unrealistic - like a woman searching for her husband and finding him by hearing someone sing a song he wrote. I learned that some of the book was based on the author's ancestors' lives; I would have enjoyed a nonfiction book about their lives more.

Theresa
The Girls Before by Kate Alice Marshall

5
Wow, just Wow! This is one of those books that will not leave your hands. And if you have to put it down, you won’t stop thinking about it. It’s dark, tense, emotionally charged and wonderfully suspenseful. Told in alternating POVs with characters that are hard not to like. Especially Dev and Barry. For those who have read the book, am I right? If you haven’t yet, you’ll see what I mean. Kate Alice Marshall is at the top of her game. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Muriel
The Unraveling of Julia by Lisa Scottoline

5
This Scottoline book had a little different twist in that it contained some mysticism, ESP, or whatever you want to term it. There’s a lot we don’t know about our brains and what we can perceive. Some studies have shown people who can use their brains to connect to other people and situations. That being said, Lisa’s book kept me turning the pages wanting to see if Julia would find her birth mother, husband’s killer, answers to mysterious happenings at the villa she inherited in Italy, and why she was being followed. The author moved the plot along well with realistic conversations and interesting descriptions of places in Italy. Julia was the type of person the reader wanted to see succeed.

Something to Look Forward To by Fannie Flagg

5
At the center of Fannie Flagg’s book are down to earth people who live their lives trying to get along with others and the circumstances in life they have been dealt with. It was easy to get caught up in the lives of the people in the 30 short stories presented. In the words of Carol Burnett, “The characters jump off the pages into your heart.” The stories offer humor and people caring for one another. There was an interaction between two characters, Velma and granddaughter Traci, where they talked about trees reaching out to one another with their roots to hold hands. The idea was that even if they couldn’t see each other, Velma would be there for Traci anytime she felt alone. This is a pleasant, positive selection of stories.

A Killer Motive by Hannah Mary McKinnon

4
Hannah Mary McKinnon writes great thrillers that always surprise me. This thriller begins with Stella sneaking her brother, Max, out of the house for a beach party. He goes missing that night without a trace. Now, 6 years later, Stella and her best friend, Vivien, host a true crime podcast, A Killer Motive. She is invited to go on another radio show, People of Portland, hosted by her former neighbor, Charlene. Stella says if she has one clue, she could find Max. So, she is given a clue - in a very strange way. Someone starts tracking Stella and giving her ultimatums. Then when Max's best friend, Kenji, goes missing, Stella realizes that the stakes are higher than she ever thought. Surprising and tense!

The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner

4
In 1905, Sophie Whalen, an Irish immigrant, travels from NYC to San Francisco to marry Martin Hocking, a widower with a 5 year-old daughter, Kat. They marry immediately and she is taken to their new home. Sophie realizes that Kat is withdrawn and needs clothing, but Martin doesn't seem to notice, which Sophie believes is due to his grief. Martin travels often for work. Sophie adores Kat and works to draw her out. When a stranger comes to the door one evening, Sophie's world is upended. Then, the earthquake of 1906 hits and the city is in disarray. I really enjoyed how Meissner wrote this time period and the characters.

Just okay. Probably okay for young adults.

Ruthanne
The Cliffs by J. Courtney Sullivan

4
Very engaging novel. The book tells a few parallel stories. The main character present day dealing with loss, addiction and the reality of clearing her deceased mom's house while researching the history and strange happenings at a historical home. Lots of history about Maine and Indigenous people throughout the book. This is my first reading of this author and I will definitely read her others.

Linda
The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom

5
We just read this for book club and loved it. Most of us listened to it on Audio because of all the different people who go to his funeral and how they knew him. We had a lively discussion about it. So many interesting meanings are in this book. It's an older one of Mr. Albom's, but I would highly recommend. One of our members had just bought his new book TWICE and I already have it reserved at my library.

Brave and moving novel based on the author's medical diagnosis. Both heartbreaking and life -affirming. If you enjoy Sophie Kinsella's many novels, this is a must-read.

The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer

Compelling storyline which, except for the time table, reads as real. The two main characters learn from life and grow, adding to the appeal of the book.

Kimberley
The Break Line by James Brabazon

4
This is a frightening and gruesome novel focused on germ warfare and the enemy within. Not light reading, it is packed with violence and scary details. The reader can only hope this is not happening and that the enemy stays the course of battle.

Christine
The View from Lake Como by Adriana Trigiani

5
The queen of Italian family storytelling does it again! The main character, Giussepina “Jess”, might be Adriana’s funniest character yet, but don’t let that fool you— this book is as touching as her previous stories.

Aida
The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

The Rule Book by Sarah Adams

3
Nora Mackenzie always wanted to be a sports agent, so when she was in danger of her grades dropping, she dropped her college boyfriend, Derek Pender. Now 8 years later, she has the opportunity to represent Derek, but he isn't interested. He is still hurting from the break-up. To give her a chance, he decides to put some rules in place and works to torment her. But, he still loves her, and she loves him too. Naturally, this is a romance, so rules get broken. This includes appearances from Bree and Nathan from THE CHEAT SHEET. Cute, but not great.

Nightbird by Alice Hoffman

4
Alice Hoffman writes so beautifully and creates unique characters. In this story, Twig and her mom move from NY to Sidwell where her mom grows fruits in an orchard. They have a secret - her brother lives in the attic because Twig's family was cursed by the Sidwell witch, and her brother James has wings. He often flies at night. When a new family moves next door, Twig becomes friends with the younger girl, although Twig's mom discourages her from continuing the friendship. This is a moving story of friends and a community that comes together. I really enjoyed this short novel.

Rose
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

4
I didn't know what to expect from this book but was pleasantly surprised. Even though it is hard to read, it is beautifully written. Little Dog is writing a letter to his mother. He tells her his story and reveals some secrets about himself, his feelings, his love life, and his relationship with his grandfather. His mother was from Vietnam and came to the U. S. seeking her lover. He discusses his life and the way he was treated and how he came to experience love. A short but powerful novel.

Kiss Her Goodbye by Lisa Gardner

4
Frankie Elkin finds people. In this one, she is asked to find Afghan refugee Sabera Ahmadi. This novel highlights the plight of these refugees, the rich culture and food of the Afghani people, and the struggles they face when they come to a new country. Additionally, this story has a bit of suspense and danger. Sabera's talent with languages has put her skills to use, which puts her, and her daughter, Zahra who has a photographic memory, in danger. There is also some comic relief in the book when Frankie is hired by Bart to care for his pets. Daryl, his driver, and Genni, his housekeeper, become great helpers to Frankie in her search for Sabera. Nothing is what it seems in this novel - so interesting! I loved learning about Afghanistan.

The Match by Sarah Adams

Evie Jones has epilepsy and has been teased for it in the past. She has since spent her time working for a service dog agency, and her dog Charlie helps to warn her of an impending seizure. Her extremely wealthy parents want her to marry a lawyer who is a partner in their law firm. That is not Evie's plan! Evie meets Jacob when his 10 year-old daughter, Sam, scheduled a meeting for her to get a service dog. Jacob is broadsided by the meeting and acts like a jerk, which Evie calls him on. Yet there was definitely mutual attraction. This is a cute romance which highlights living with epilepsy, and some ways to help live a life where this isn't the main focus. Evie and Jacob must work together for their relationship. Very enjoyable.

Salty by Kate Myers

2
Two sisters come together to take down the family that destroyed their childhood home by sabotaging the family and its business. I didn't like one character in the book - nor did I find it hilarious or funny in any way. This one was not for me. Petty, greedy people, cheaters, amoral - just awful people. My recommendation - skip it.

Rose
My Friends by Fredrik Backman

5
Fredrik Backman is one of my favorite authors, and this book has cemented his status even more securely. It is a beautiful book about friendship - the friends we make as young, vulnerable children, and how these friendships stay with us throughout our lives. The book also examines how art transforms us. The unlikely friendship of Louisa and Ted was delightful. Their repartee made me laugh. The story of the four friends and their love for each other unfolded slowly, but was lovely. Backman has a way of writing that is so unique and so real. I wanted to remember every word. I went back and reread several chapters while reading this to savor it. This book will stay with me for a long time.

Lesley
Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Powell and Faith Erin Hicks(illustrator)

5
This is a beautiful graphic novel for young adults and the young at heart. A perfect fall read for those who enjoy art and a story about friendship and first loves. Can easily be read in one sitting. Would also make a great gift for a young adult.

Weyward by Emilia Hart

4
Three generations of women's lives woven together as they practice magic or discover their ties to it in 1619, 1942 and 2019, respectively. I appreciated the development of the female characters and each of their stories. However, the book would have been better, in my opinion, had the author done the same with the male characters. Instead, they are tyrannical, stereotypical, flat characters lacking complexity and humanity. A feminist take, but not a very believable or interesting one.

Kelsey
White Horse by Erika T. Wurth

Took me a while to get into it but ended up loving it!

Christina
Tantrum by Rachel Eve Moulton

2
This was not my cup of tea. It was horror, a thriller involving a young child who turns into a monster. I think if you are a fan of this genre you may enjoy this short read. However, I couldn’t get past some aspects of this fantasy and it was a little too dark for me.

Christina
The Accidental Favorite by Fran Littlewood

4
This was a really good read dealing with decades of family drama and how they affected three sisters in their own relationships with their partners and children. The story follows an English family with three daughters and starts with them enjoying a week-long family vacation in a beautiful house in the country. Each sister has her own personal problems that manifest throughout the book.

Our Last Vineyard Summer by Brooke Lea Foster

4
I am fan of this author and her new book did not disappoint. This was a duel timeline book that focused on mothers and daughters and their relationships as well as trying to save their childhood home.

Christina
The Violet Hour by Victoria Benton Frank

4
I enjoyed this book. Violet returns back to her childhood home in the Lowcountry and tries to navigate life. The book details her relationship with her best friend, family and her love life.

Christina
The Homemade God by Rachel Joyce

4
This was a novel with plenty of family drama that was revealed slowly throughout the book. I felt that the author kept you in suspense as to what really did happen to the family’s father. This was a good read and I enjoyed it.

Christina
Calling All Blessings by Beverly Jenkins

3
This book about the residents of Henry Adams focuses on the matriarch of the town, Tamar July and her relationships with several men, years of her family and citizens of the town. This was a sweet summer read. However, since this is my first reading of this series, it took me a while to understand who all of the characters of the town were and their relationship to Tamar. I wish I would have read several of the author's previous book in the series as it would have helped me get oriented. There are a lot of characters mentioned in this book that aren’t germane to the storyline. Once I got into the story I did enjoy it and was sad when I learned that this is the last book in this series.

Christina
LA Women by Ella Berman

4
I enjoyed this book. It was a bit dry at the beginning, but I found the storyline picked up midway through the book. This was a story about a relationship of a writer in LA and two friendships that develop after she arrives in LA. She had a sad upbringing that affected her adult relationships with her friends, husband and children.
