The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

4
This is Book 1 of the Elin Warner series. Elin is a police detective and is on leave. She and her boyfriend, Will, are on a vacation in an isolated place in the Swiss Alps, called The Sanatorium. This is a hotel, from a renovated hospital known for treating tuberculosis patients. It is a sinister place, and there are secrets hidden. When people end up missing and/or dead, Elin is forced to take on the role of a lead investigator as the hotel is cut off from outside help due to a series of avalanches. When her brother, Isaac's, fiance, and Elin's friend, goes missing, Elin must confront her fears, and also face the tragedy that happened in her childhood, when her brother, Sam, died. This is an eerie start to an exciting new series!

Rose
The Retreat by Sarah Pearse

4
Book 2 of the Elin Warner series. Once again, Elin is sent to a secluded place - this time The Retreat which is on an island connected by a bridge to the mainland. She invites her boyfriend to come spend the weekend with her while she investigates a murder at The Retreat. Years earlier, children were murdered at a camp on the island. Now, more people are murdered. Is there a connection? Elin also feels someone watching her, which is a continuation from Book 1. Still happening in this book. Another spooky book with Elin as the main character. A good series continues! I wonder - will the next book once again put Elin in a place cut off from civilization?

Pam
The Night Travelers by Armando Lucas Correa

5
Four generations of women beginning just before WWII and their stories of how they persevered through war, upheaval and discrimination and their sacrifices to insure the survival of their daughters. The stories just flow. He also wrote THE GERMAN GIRL, which I liked a lot.

Andrea
Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng

5
How timely.

Vivian
Sacrifice by Christine Jordan

3
Good book, great historical research. I only wished the author would have taken the time to learn the right words in Hebrew since she decided to use them in the book.

Simonne
Devotion by Adam Makos

3
Korean War naval pilots true story. Involves the background and story of two pilots and one Marine and so many others these courageous men fought alongside.

Susan
Signal Fires by Dani Shapiro

5
Really enjoyed the book.

Andrew
Rescued: Book 1 - Darkest of Portland Series by Dena Crawford-Nibler

5
This was my first read from this author and I was absolutely hooked on this crazy and insane story! I was on the edge of my seat and thoroughly creeped out by this action-packed, horrifying book. I love a story set in the Pacific Northwest, with Oregon being an absolute favorite; Crawford-Nibler did a great job bringing the city to life. This was an unforgettable read! I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Andrew
Rise of Polaris by Michele Amitrani

5
I've never read a story quite like this one and it was freaking great! I had a blast shooting through the years, getting glimpses into the life of Wei and his projects. I was highly anticipating the launch of Polaris, rooting for Wei and his colleagues. The science fiction aspect of this novel was outstanding, with an attainable and relatable theme of space travel. My favorite part was the way this book was formatted and how the chapters and timeline were layed out - I will just say it was awesome! I will, no doubt, be reading this more than once. Wei is one of those characters that really resonate with you and you will not soon forget our Omnilogos. A wonderful start to my 2023 reading journey!!

Tessa
Elevation by Stephen King

4
This is a wonderful novella about death, friendship, making amends, and reconciling differences. The work uses an unusual plot device to focus on human kindness and respect, and King gives us a lesson on what it means to be a good neighbor, and how to support one another despite our differences. I like the way that the characters slowly come to know one another and resolve their conflicts. The ending of Scott’s tale is poignant and heartfelt.

Rose
The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

4
Jess goes to Paris to stay with her half-brother, Ben, but when she arrives, he is not there. Jess begins to realize that he has gone missing and that the apartment building where he lives has a strange cast of characters that are closer than apartment mates should be. There is Sophie in the penthouse, Mimi on 4, Nick on 2, and Antoine on 1, plus a concierge. Ben's apartment is on 3. The more Jess learns about the people in the building and Ben's disappearance, the more she believes she is in danger. This is a thriller told partly in flashback, with a bit more of the story being revealed as each person tells their tale. By the end, it is neatly wrapped up, with justice being served appropriately.

Marie
The Rehearsals by Annette Christie

4
This was a fun book to listen to. The dual narrative was great. Even though they seem like the perfect couple, Meg and Tom have a few issues to figure out before they get married. Will the extra days of the time loop be enough? It was fun wondering what was going to happen. Christie kept me guessing.

sherry
A Backpack, a Bear, and Eight Crates of Vodka by Lev Golinkin

4
Very good book, and so educational at same time.

Judi
The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel

5
This historical fiction was a real page-turner, shedding light on a part of WWII history that was unfamiliar to me. Harmel's characters are beautifully developed and she was able to describe the setting vividly.

Elizabeth
Hands Down by Felix Francis

5
Loved this book.

Laurie
The Lipstick Bureau by Michelle Gable

4
A gripping, fascinating novel for someone who adores fictional history stories. l love an opportunity to learn something new. This novel is set in 1944 Rome, Italy, and the American spy agency is nicknamed The Lipstick Bureau as it's made up of all women.

Cynthia
The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry

4
A child is found which looks like a baby. Turns out she is six years old with rotten teeth, covered and chained in blood. Completely traumatized. Where did she come from? Who is she? Still in diapers and fractured bones that have grown back together. She sure looks innocent and sweet…but is she?

Alice
All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda

5
She is one of my favorite authors and this book did not disappoint.

Lynn
Horse by Geraldine Brooks

4
Beautifully-written historical fiction. This book shines a light on horse racing, art and slavery. Set in three time periods and a page-turner.

Sandra
Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylen

4
Very thought-provoking. Will be an interesting discussion at our January book club meeting.

Kelley
The Stories We Tell by Joanna Gaines

4
One take away from this book is we may think someone has it altogether, but underneath the veneer we all have our struggles.

Betty
Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith

3
One of the Cormoran Strike series. Good premise but much too long. Galbraith (J. K. Rowling) needs a courageous editor to keep her in check. 1,000+ pages is too long for this story.

Julie
The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb

5
A mystery, a priceless violin, racism, and an extraordinary musician make for a wonderful winter read.

Susan
The Maid by Nita Prose

4
Unusual protagonist who you can admire. Plot is interesting, but staid. Great setting and character development.

Cheryl
This Land Is Not Empty by Sarah Augustine

4
This nonfiction book explains the Doctrine of Discovery that allowed European countries, and the United States, to take land from Indigenous peoples. This doctrine is still being applied in other countries to seize tribal lands for economic development and hurt the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples.

Alexandra
Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

4
The beautifully-written book is about an incident in a Montgomery, Alabama. A young health nurse takes a job at a government sponsored birth control clinic, and is shocked to realize that girls as young as 11-13 are given birth control shots and also sterilized. After consulting a lawyer, the matter is taken up by Senator Ted Kennedy, and then the family of the little girl is asked to testify before Congress. A fictionalized version of true events, so well written that the reader is both heartbroken and angry.

April
The Time In Between by Maria Duenas

5
Memorable and captivating historical novel which is beautifully written and a real treasure to enjoy.

Matthew
Praying for Sleep by Jeffery Deaver

4
Enjoyed the story. Believable characters. The plot is engaging. Plenty of tension and suspense, but with a plausibility that keeps one reading.

Patty
The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore

5
A part of history that I knew nothing about. This is so well written and makes you feel you are living this right along with Elizabeth Packard.

Monica
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

5
I loved everything about this book! The story, the characters, and the writing style are all engaging!

Connie
The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

5
I enjoy the Thursday Murder Club mysteries. The characters are interesting and love to solve the mysteries and crimes of the area.

Rosa
The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman

5
This is the third installment in the Thursday Murder Club series. The books keep getting better and better. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim are investigating the death of journalist Bethany Waites, which happened ten years previously. Elizabeth is threatened that she will be killed unless she kills someone from her past. The gang is hilarious and kept me laughing out loud. I love this series and can't wait for the next book!

Michele
The Whittiers by Danielle Steel

5
You lose your anchors but find that small anchors work just as good. Siblings come together to grieve and be a presence for each other. One has their marriage fall apart, one finds love when wasn't looking or wanting it. Others find their true selves.

Sherri
Beyond Belief by Jenna Miscavage Hill

3
Autobiography of the niece of the leader of Scientology. It's the story of how she was raised in the church and how she escaped.

Lisa
The Brain: The Story of You by David Eagleman

5
This is not the type of book that I would usually read and was a bit hesitant when it was given to me as a gift. Well, boy was I surprised! It is not the textbook-type of read that I had feared, but a well-researched and fascinating work of how the brain functions. The real-life examples bring the scientific information to life. Don't shy away from this book. It will grab you as much as any work of fiction and you have the opportunity to learn a lot about how this important part of our body functions.

Sherry
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

5
This book has everything. The main character embodies all the women who have paved the way for the rest of us. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next, and I didn’t want it to end.

Jolene
Always by Sarah Jio

5
I have always loved any books by Sarah Jio and this book did not disappoint!! A love story about the loss of your one true love and redemption and finding your way back. Only took me two days to read because I could not put it down!!

Beth
The Whisper Man by Alex North

4
One of the last of the books that I won from Bookreporter.com in 2020, so not a book I would have chosen myself. But it was a real page-turner, though very disturbing. It follows a police officer who captured a man who murdered little boys, who was called the Whisper Man because the murdered children reported hearing someone whispering outside their doors before they were kidnapped. Twenty years have passed and the original Whisper Man is in prison but the murders start again. At the same time, a grieving widower moves into the town where this is happening. The story is also about father-son relationships.

Wendy
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

4
I listened to the audiobook starting just at the end of 2022 and finishing it yesterday. It's a charming story of a young man searching for his birth father, a widow without any children as her only son died young, and an octopus! The octopus is easily the most memorable character and he is very, very smart. I rooted for him to escape from the aquarium where he is "held in captivity", as he put it, all through the book. No spoilers but if you are looking for a feel good read I recommend this book.

Kathleen
The Lindbergh Nanny by Mariah Fredericks

5
THE LINDBERGH NANNY by Mariah Fredericks is a story based on true facts of the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh's son in 1932. I love a good historical novel based in part on facts. Mariah has done a wonderful job of putting all the pieces of the case together. Written with knowledge and compassion, it makes for a great read.

Linda
Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson

4
BLACK CAKE's plot is Eleanor baking a cake and freezing it until her death in hopes that her two children would reconcile. The story was somewhat confusing because the names of characters changed. I especially liked that Wilkerson included a very real concern for the health of the oceans.

Marilyn
Wicked Autumn by G. M. Malliet

4
This is the first in a series following Max Tudor, former agent with M15 and now a parish pastor who continues to deal with the death of a good friend and colleague and a tongue-in-cheek English village. There are several characters who range from funny to painful to eccentric.

MARGUERITE
Booth by Karen Joy Fowler

5
A great, interesting book!

Mary Anne
Dreamland by Nicholas Sparks

5
Another winner from Nicholas Sparks. His characters are very human, and have to deal with various levels of misfortune, but manage to stay true to themselves as they deal with life's challenges. And said challenges could make for a very depressing read, but it isn't at all; it's ultimately hopeful, I enjoyed it very much.

Susan
Purgatory Ridge by William Kent Kruger

5
I am reading the whole series. This is the third. Cork finds himself giving advise to the sheriff that he lost the election to. Now that sheriff is retiring and they want Cork to run again. Meanwhile, the case that they ask Cork to be involved in takes a personal turn when his wife and youngest child are kidnapped.

Dawn
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

4
This was an interesting book from the very beginning and I enjoyed the audiobook production very much. Great and thought-provoking storyline.

Susan
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

5
Excellent adaptation of David Copperfield. Kingsolver once again excels at dialect and storytelling-no two books of hers are the same.

Rose
Blue Ticket by Sophie Mackintosh

3
Well, this was bizarre. It also left me feeling very unsettled. Calla lives in a society where as a female you are given a blue ticket or a white ticket once you begin your bleeding. Blue - career, White - family. Calla receives a blue ticket, but she wonders, should she be a mother, does she want a husband and children? She takes matters into her own hands, but once she does that, she becomes a fugitive, because she bucked the rules. This is unsettling and strange and sad. Taking away one's free will and their voice, it is frightening.

Amy
Twenty Years Later by Charlie Donlea

5
Such a fantastic first read for 2023! Short chapters and a compelling storyline made this book hard to put down. I loved that it loosely centered around a real event (9/11) without it being the biggest focus. I would definitely recommend to a friend wanting a good, suspenseful book!

Marilyn
Into the Storm by Rachel Grant

5
A fascinating story of survival during a storm involving an elite team of Navy SEALs who thought they were coming to a remote lodge for wilderness training and end up fighting for their lives when attacked by mercenaries. The two lead characters, a female park archeologist and the Navy SEAL who planned the exercise must work together to survive during a terrible storm and find a way to help the Navy SEAL team survive a very deadly foe.

Lana
Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton

5
The first graphic novel I have read. Very much an indictment of everything that is wrong with big oil, yet the human spirit of the author and many of the good decent people who worked in the oil sands shows through the bad ones and the companies as a whole.

Mindy
In an Instant by Lee Woodruff and Bob Woodruff

4
A good book about ABC news anchor Bob Woodruff's traumatic brain injury while covering the war in Iraq when an improvised explosive device went off near the tank he was riding in. Told from alternating points of view, it is the story of their marriage, his recovery, and the strength of both of them as they persevered through this experience.

Susan
Hidden in Snow by Viveca Sten

5
This is the first book I have read by Viveca Sten. Sten did an great job of character and plot development. I look forward to reading more books by Viveca Sten.

Great character development in this look at life in the South in a bygone era.

Cecilia
The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle by Jennifer Ryan

4
I learned a lot about clothes rationing during WWII.

MH
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

5
Delightful book! Original and not the usual run-of-the mill. Elderly cleaning woman at aquarium deals with an escaping octopus.

Rose
The It Girl by Ruth Ware

5
Great novel by Ruth Ware! April is the "It Girl", a bright light, full of life, and simply beautiful. Hannah meets her as her roommate at Oxford, April brings Hannah into her circle, along with Will, Hugo, Ryan, and Emily. Sadly, at the end of their first year, April is dead, and Hannah has accused John Neville, a school porter. Now, Neville has died after 10 years in prison, claiming his innocence to the end, and reporters are looking into the case. Hannah, now married to Will, pregnant with their first child, begins to wonder if she got it wrong. As she begins to dig deeper into what happened that night, she realizes that the people she was closest to are hiding a major secret, and her life is in danger. Novel moves quickly. Surprise end.

PJ
A Reunion of Death by Patricia Crandall

4
A Christmas celebration is announced by proprietors Mavis and Trevor Gordon of Willoughby Trace. It will be a gathering of an interesting collection of longtime friends. Prior to the gathering, there have been some thefts on the property and one of the invitees has been asked to look into it. I admit I really liked one of the main characters in the book but things can be very deceiving. And there were a lot of people in the book with serious issues. Are we really sure that justice was served? I highly recommend this book.

Jeanne
Triple Cross by James Patterson

5
TRIPLE CROSS by James Patterson is an electrifying, terrifying thriller from the very beginning. It grabbed my attention immediately and I couldn’t put it down. When James Patterson writes a book solely without collaborating with any other authors, he knocks it out of the park and this book is no exception. It is one of my favorites because it is well written in true James Patterson style as evidenced by the three plots he expertly wove into the storyline that dealt with a serial killer referred to as the Family Man Killer. Each separate plot stood on its own intriguing story, yet fits into the main story. Without writing a synopsis and giving away any spoilers, this book has all the elements of a psychological thriller.

Jeanne
Livid by Patricia Cornwell

5
LIVID by Patricia Cornwell is another excellent, well-written book in the Kay Scarpetta series. The storyline was intense and grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The author’s character development was very good, but I felt certain sections dragged on a bit.

Jeanne
A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny

4
A WORLD OF CURIOSITIES by Louise Penny was a well-written, complicated and intriguing novel. The author is a favorite of mine, but I have to admit this book was not one of my favorites. The dialogue and character development was excellent, but I found it to be a little hard and confusing to read at times.

Liz
Gilded Mountain by Kate Manning

4
Sylvie Pelletier, a young woman, travels with her family from Vermont to Colorado in the early 1900s in order to meet up with her father who is working in a marble mine there. Upon arriving they see deplorable living conditions, little food and the workers are only being paid a pittance. Sylvie secures a temporary job at the owner’s house and becomes involved with the son. When that job is terminated she goes to work for the local newspaper and starts to side with the union organizers for better treatment of the workers. This is a historical epic that sheds light on the harsh times of that era.

Sonia
A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny

5
One of my favorites in the series. Can't wait for the next one!

Kristin
The Result of Ignorance by Dennis Medbury

5
Richly imagined fantasy world!

Elizabeth
Juniper Isle by Ava Roberts

4
A category one hurricane, a body, an invitation to an ex’s wedding, and an ex-fiancé showing up definitely make the perfect storm. Abby went away for the weekend with her best friend, but somehow ran into her ex who is getting married that weekend. Her ex fiancé also shows up along with a body. How did the body get there?  Abby doesn’t remember but it has something to do with her. Her friend reminds her what happened. JUNIPER ISLE is a mystery, a murder, a coverup, and a love triangle all wrapped into one with a “who can you trust”” group of characters. Mystery fans and women’s fiction fans will enjoy Ms Robert’s debut. This book was given to me by the author for an honest review.

Elizabeth

A Matter of Happiness by Tori Whitaker

5
Two women, two different eras, but basically the same. Both Violet and Melanie want to be independent women. A MATTER OF HAPPINESS is a lovely, lovely read that takes us from the 1920s to 2018 as we see the similarities both women faced in their personal and professional lives in each time period. Historical fiction fans, women's fiction fans, and fans of vintage cars will adore this book. Marvelous research - do not miss!!

Elizabeth
Eyes Turned Skyward by Alena Dillon

4
We meet 87-year-old Peggy, who has a secret, and her daughter Kathy. A lot of family drama inside.

It was interesting to learn of the WASP program.

Ms. Dillon is a great storyteller.

Elizabeth
The Lindbergh Nanny by Mariah Fredericks

4
Did you know who the Lindbergh nanny was? I had never heard her name nor of the nanny herself. THE LINDBERGH NANNY is an excellent, well-researched, fictionalized account of this tragic event. The author notes at the end give additional information.

Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini

4
Freed, recollections, relief society. Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley’s tale from slavery to the White House. She was a seamstress, business owner, activist and writer, but was known best for being Mrs. Lincoln’s dressmaker. She was an eyewitness to many events of the times. A remarkable woman!

Deborah
Looking for Jane by Heather Mitchell

5
WOW! Great book, I want to share it with everyone.

Tessa
Beautiful on the Outside by Adam Rippon

4
Memoir of Olympic medalist and self-proclaimed America’s Sweetheart Adam Rippon. Gosh this was fun! Rippon details his life growing up as the oldest of six children, and the sacrifices his mother made to help him achieve his dream of making it to the Olympics. From his childhood in Scranton, Pennsylvania to the independent Adam being too poor to eat anything but the free apples at his gym, he covers it all with grace and humor, while sharing the life lessons he learned. Rippon is more than just a pretty face (and the world’s BEST spinner). He’s also a thoughtful and assertive spokesperson for LGBTQ rights. I’ve always loved his skating, but now I love HIM even more!

Leslie
Trespasses by Louise Kennedy

5
Loved this one set during "the troubles" in Belfast. A tale of friendship, politics, family and illicit romance all rolled into one. Didn't want to put it down!

Gwen
Dr No by Percival Everett

4
For a book about nothing, there is a lot (of something) to be said for reading this book. A person whose desire is to be a supervillian capitalizes on unsuspecting mathematicians, including one who studies nothing, to help him with the best heist ever. Does he succeed? Does anyone else know about his nefarious plans? Well, I'd have to say something to answer these questions, and that might spoil the book, so instead, I'll say nothing.

Rhoda
New Beginnings by Diane Greenwood Muir

5
Love her books.

Rose
French Braid by Anne Tyler

4
As usual, Anne Tyler wrote a novel about family, its daily happenings, aspirations, failures, and heartbreak. FRENCH BRAID is about the Garrett family who, after their one and only family vacation in 1959 to Deep Creek Lake, become ever more estranged. Mercy, the matriarch, concentrates on her painting, to the point of moving out of the family home to her studio. Robin, her husband, puts up with these eccentricities. April and Lily, the daughters, go through life, getting married, divorced, having children. David, the youngest boy, leaves home for college, and basically never comes back again except for very brief visits. It is a look at family and all of its messiness. I enjoy Anne Tyler's books - they are quirky, but look into the family.

Janet
Beartown by Fredrik Backman

5
I had no idea the book was going to go in the direction that it did.

Rose

3
Melanie is married with three children. Her first child, Liam, was the result of a one-night stand when she was in college, and until she met Ben, she raised him on her own. Now, Liam is getting ready to turn 18. Abi, Melanie's best friend in college, is getting a divorce, and has told Melanie she is coming to UK. Melanie invites her to stay with them. Sadly, Abi becomes more entrenched in their family, doing things that are inappropriate. Ben begs Melanie to ask Abi to leave, but Melanie feels that she can't. Abi reminds her of the life she gave up when she decided to leave school and have her child. However, she can't imagine what Abi would do to Melanie's family. Twisty and interesting.

Rose
Please Join Us by Catherine McKenzie

3
I typically really enjoy Catherine McKenzie's books, but this book about a cult group and the Me Too Movement fell a bit short for me. When Nicole Mueller is not awarded the partnership level at her law firm, she is discouraged. She doesn't understand - she had the billable hours, she has done the extra work. So, now she is at a crossroads. Surprisingly, she receives an invitation from Panthera Leo, a group of women that she believes will bring in more business for her. She goes to their retreat, and meets several prominent women. But, what she doesn't know is that she is a pawn in their plan to exact revenge on men they believe wronged them. Positive: the book read quickly, plot well planned. Negative: not believable, or psych enough!

Kimberley
Read and Gone by Allison Brook

4
Although this is a Christmas setting, it is a dark mystery with gruesome murders, deceit and greed. The reader meets Carrie whose new life in a little town working at the library is upended by her estranged father, Jim, when he breaks into her cottage in the middle of the night. Lies, theft, murder upset this town’s Christmas festivities. A great read and a page-turner, this mystery is full of surprises. The reader appreciates the lead characters strength and sleuthing abilities. Oh, and there is also a cat.

Juliea
All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers

5
I really enjoyed this book. It was full of suspense and twists and turns. It reminded me of a Dateline episode, but you are diving into the thoughts and details of the participants. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves murder mysteries, suspense, and thrillers.

Francisca
The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams

4
A troubled teen with a summer job in the library and an aging widower who still feels lost without his wife forge an unlikely alliance based on a reading list found tucked into a copy of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. This is a very good debut for Adams. The characters are complex and have a variety of issues. On the surface one wouldn’t expect them to have anything in common or to be able to relate to one another at all. But Adams brings them together, first by happenstance, and slowly by shared experiences and their individuals needs for human connection.

Elizabeth
All the Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham

4
A parents' worst nightmare - your child is kidnapped. The guilt, the horror, the longing never stops. And to top it off people think Isabelle staged the kidnapping and killed her son.

Anna
The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton

2
While this book had an interesting plot, about global warming and what happens in this made up version of FL where the state starts going underwater, it just didn’t go where I had hoped. I found it was very much the same thing over and over again. Waters rise, main character having to learn to adapt for survival, repeat. I don’t want to belittle the story in any way but I lost interest about 100 pages in. I found the book sad, yet at the same time I really didn’t care or connect to the characters. The thing I enjoyed most was the descriptive writing of the land. I think if you liked WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING you will enjoy this story. If slow dreary reads are not for you, I would just warn you this story is exactly that.

Kay
The Many Daughters of Afong Moy by Jamie Ford

3
The story is told from the point of view of several characters, all descendants of Afong Moy, spanning over a century or more in time. I didn't feel much empathy for the characters or their struggles.

The Bell in the Lake by Lars Mytting

5
The late 1800s in rural Norway is depicted through characters I found to be very believable. There is a thread of mythic stories of the bells in the Stave Kirk from the 1600s which kept coming back when the pastor arranged for the Stave Kirk to be sold, dismantled, and shipped off to Germany. All this to build a newer, (drab sounding) church, which would be warmer in winter and large enough to hold funerals, weddings, etc.

A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology by Mike Rinder

4
Mike Rinder does a great job weaving his life experience within Scientology, making sure to not just include events but also his mental state, his thought process, and the feelings that surfaced during those experiences. As the outside viewer looking in who often asks "how could anyone believe in this", he makes it very plain just how easy it is to fall into the trap of cults and cult belief. Rinder's harrowing escape paints an even grimmer picture of the desperation and risk that former Scientology members took to try and escape, not just the system but also a way of thinking and operating in the world. Kudos to Rinder for paving the way to building an understanding of an oppressive secretive system.

The House Is on Fire by Rachel Beanland

5
Alternating voices from four protagonists - from different walks of life - tells of the Richmond Theater Fire from their perspective. A social elite, a stage hand, a lady's maid and a blacksmith. Each has a hand in something from that night and the book explains how it changed their life and the lives of the people around them. Great historical fiction based on a true event. Seven pages of author notes lets you know what real facts are presented and what the author added as fiction. Not a book to be missed.

5
Beautifully-written story set in S. Africa during apartheid. Beauty is a Black woman searching for her daughter who has gone missing. Robin is a 10-year old White girl who is now living with her aunt after the death of her parents. Her irresponsible and usually drunk aunt leaves Robin for weeks at a time, and hires Beauty to care for her. Robin initially looks down on Beauty, as this is how she has been taught. But, through the caring of others, and how they treat Beauty, as well as the love and care Beauty shows to Robin changes their lives, and brings out the true meaning of family. Lyrical and touching.

Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith

4
This is a wild ride of a psychological suspense thriller. Two men meet on a train, and one is an alcoholic psychopath who proposes a plan for two perfect murders that will solve all their problems. The suspense comes from one man’s clever and persistent pursuit of the other, not just as an accomplice to murder, but as a best friend. He behaves like a love-sick boy, and his careless actions are bringing an equally determined detective closer and closer to the truth. Will they truly get away with it? If not, who will get blamed? Who will crack first?

Beneath Devil's Bridge by Loreth Anne White

4
A good mystery is hard to find, but author Loreth Anne White delivered a very good one. Here, a small town is decimated by a horrible crime and two decades later secrets are being being revealed. The book was full of intrigue, emotion, and pain. Amazing how so many were affected by one act. There were twists I didn't see coming and some that seemed obvious, but overall this was a really good novel. There were so many characters and almost no one was truly good. So many shades of gray or darker. I wished the ending wouldn't haven't got so preachy and more consequences were realized. This is an author I'll look forward to reading in the future.

56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard

4
The story opens with two detectives having to go to the scene where a dead body has been found. Lee and Karl head to the apartment complex to try to determine what happened. Set in Ireland during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, this is the story of Oliver and Ciara who meet while grocery shopping. Oliver has a secret, he is one of the boys who committed a crime years earlier, when he was a child. He is suspicious that Ciara might be a journalist, trying to find him to write a story, but her story holds up, and he begins to fall for her. Told in a series of flashbacks between 56 days ago and today, and a bit more, but I won't spoil it! The story has several twists. I really enjoyed this, and I will read more from this author.

The Lindbergh Nanny by Mariah Fredericks

4
I’m old enough to remember my parents speaking of this kidnapping/murder, but never spent much thought on it. This was a book club choice, and, frankly, I felt it was somewhat slow to start, but it did, eventually, pull me in. It was a good read. I was particularly grateful to the author for clarifying many of the incidents in the story as being based on fact or entirely fictionalized.

The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson

4
Great book - worth reading. Written in the alternating style of two protagonists - both Black girls - whose destiny's final converge. Ruby is 15 and finds herself pregnant and being sent away to a "school for girls" so as not to prevent her from winning a scholarship for college. Eleanor was in college and finds herself pregnant and sitting on the outside of her husband's family for not coming from the right circle of people. This book speaks to racism - both White on Black and Black on Black. It takes place in the 1950s. Well researched and a page-turner. The author adds 4 pages of authors notes explaining her vision for writing this book. Publishes on Feb 7, 2023. I received a free ARC from Simon and Schuster for review.

The more I learn about the internment of Americans of Japanese descent during WWII, the more appalled I become. This is both the coming-of-age story of a young woman in the 1940s and the saga of such a Japanese American family. Like some other historical fiction, it taught me a great deal while entertaining me with a wonderful story.

The author’s great grandparents immigrated from Germany to Wisconsin in the 1880s, settling on a farm. Her parents took over the dairy farm and raised their family. A dairy farm requires 24/7 work from each member of the family; the women indoors and the men outdoors. The conveniences are limited. Nadine was born a couple of months after I was born in 1936 and though I wasn’t born on a farm in the harsh state of Wisconsin, I can relate to many of her memories.

4
Easily the best of Andrews’ books that I’ve read. Set on Tybee Island near Savannah, Hattie reluctantly agrees to do a reality TV show fixing up an old house in just 6 weeks. Having to work with talented, handsome designer Trae complicates the plot - as does finding clues to a popular teacher’s disappearance 17 years ago.

The Maid by Nita Prose

5
I am late to the party reading this book and moved it up my list so that I would get it read before the January 25th event. Well, I couldn't put this book down. A very interesting and thoughtful plot that keeps you wanting to learn more about Molly the protagonist and to jump in and help her out. Also, it opened my eyes as to how we read/misread people and are quick to write someone off because they don't fit the traditional norms of behavior. If you haven't read this already, make sure to dive into it as soon as you can.

The Ways We Hide by Kristina McMorris

2
The story takes place during WWII. It surrounds Fenna Vos, an illusionist who’s recruited by British military intelligence to create ways to hide money/gadgets to help the allies. She makes gadgets similar to those provided by Q in the Bond films. McMorris takes events out of their real chronological order and inserts them into the story to fit with Fenna’s life, which I found disconcerting.

Historical fiction at its best! Alan Hlad does it again. In a time where being a Jew, or even helping one, is extremely dangerous, there are some who will risk everything to help. The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams

5
If you're a reader/writer, you probably love language and the meaning of words. This is the historical novel for you. It's a history of the development and final publication of the Oxford English Dictionary. Esme, the main character, questions whether the mostly male team favored their words, which were included, more so than women's and common folks' vocabulary, which were discarded. Williams also touches on the suffrage movement and WWI in the same time span.

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

4
I really liked this YA work of historical fiction that focuses on the Chinese-American experience during the McCarthy Red-Scare period. Lily is a typical teen of the era, but somewhat naïve. When she stumbles on a book depicting a lesbian relationship she is puzzled, intrigued and excited. Coming out in this time period was not easy and fraught with danger. Though Lily starts out naïve and unsure, she shows herself to be principled, compassionate, and willing to stand up for herself. I really appreciated the author’s note at the end, which detailed the history of the era.

The Whisper Man by Alex North

4
One of the last of the books that I won from Bookreporter.com in 2020, so not a book I would have chosen myself. But it was a real page-turne, though very disturbing.

Muriel
Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan

5
Wow! What a great collaboration by two fine authors! There’s the suspense of a young man, Asher, arrested and on trial for the murder of his girlfriend Lily. There are two strong mother figures, Olivia and Ava, who only want to love and protect their children. There are secrets which characters are afraid to share and outcomes that are uncertain. This book has a storyline which keeps the reader quickly turning pages to see what will happen. Along with the story, there is fascinating information about honey bees. I also gained better understanding of transgender people. To paraphrase Jodi P., “We have more in common with each other than not. Sometimes making the world a better place involves creating space for those already in it.”

Selling Katie by Donna White

5
Mind numbing terror! Donna White takes you to another world - a frightening world - an unfortunate reality for many. This captivating page-turner takes the reader into the world of human/sex trafficking. How a manipulator can easily persuade anyone with charisma, gift giving and violence. Katie is everyone’s daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter, neighbour. Every young person should read this to be aware of these perpetrators. This book should be made into a documentary. Well written, Donna!

Two childhood best friends grow up to become brilliant makers of computer games. The ups and downs of their relationship and the successes and failures of their work run through the center of the novel, which reflects the times from the 1980s to the present. Interrogation, syllabus, lollipop, salt. Ruby is in a police station interrogation room when the story begins. She is accused of her husband’s death. 5
Depicts the story of five Native American children forced into boarding school in western Canada. A horrific and painful story but is a MUST read. The author follows the children into adulthood. The amount of work employees perform is huge, complicated by getting instant performance ratings from customers. Mae excels and moves up quickly. She fails to see the danger in a corporate plan for her to give up her privacy by live streaming her activities daily. Ultimately, no one can hide from The Circle. The story is both clever and creepy.

Maame by Jessica George

5
What a wonderful book to listen to on audio. Maame is a 25-year-old Ghanaian woman who is trying to navigate life. Her mother went back to Ghana years ago and her brother James, is older and has his own life. Maame lives with her father who develops Parkinson's disease, so after work, she is his sole caretaker. Maame hardly lives the life of a 25-year-old and lives a mundane life. One day her mom decides to move back and Maame at last has some freedom. She starts to enjoy life but has few ups, and more downs. Maame Googles every question, but has to learn for herself. Then her father dies and her world falls apart even more. This book was endearing, sad, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny.

All the Dark Places by Terri Parlato

4
I could not put this book down. It was suspenseful and well crafted with interesting characters. It was told from two points of view which I enjoyed. And as hard as I tried, I was unable to guess the killer. It was the author's debut novel and I look forward to reading her next book.

Jo Anne
The Accomplice by Lisa Lutz

4
This book was quite interesting; it's told in the past and the present. It's the story of platonic best friends during the course of nearly twenty years. And it seems that dead people turn up around them. Friendships, secrets, family trauma; a cleverly plotted mystery. The beginning reminded me of the writings of Liane Moriarty where you are left hanging at the end of each chapter, never quite getting to what is truly going on. But eventually, the book takes on a life of its own. The ending wasn't as powerful as I would have liked, but I do recommend it.

Happenstance by Tessa Bailey

A scorcher with hot sex scenes! What happens when a woman is stranded in a tram car with three hunks? Attraction flares among them. They call themselves the Tram Fam and soon begin an unusual relationship. Elise Brandeis is able to sense what each man needs help with in his life whether it be the feeling of being used as experienced by the porn star, the inability to please his mother by the rugby coach, or the ability to stand up to others experienced by the construction foreman. They are able to help her with her inability to form relationships as her parents were in the military and constantly moved which ruined the friendships she had made. A great book with lots of funny situations!

Too Wild to Tame by Tessa Bailey

2
I couldn't determine what was Grace Pendleton's problem. Her mother had taken her to a camp for two months while she went on vacation with her husband. They ignored their daughter until one of the camp's employees killed some of Grace's friends. This undoubtedly caused mental problems, but she acted crazy when Aaron Clarkson first met her. He was hired to work on her father's campaign and knew he needed to stay away from her, but the sexual attraction between them was too strong. I thought the book had too much crude sexual scenes and language. This along with the goofy character ruined it for me.

Mean Streak by Sandra Brown

5
It was a wonderful thriller. Sandra Brown is wonderful storyteller. It is a very compelling novel: love, deceit, and the choices we make when our lives are on the line. Loved it!

Susan
A Beam of Light by Andrea Camilleri

4
This series is one of the best -- the characters, the setting, the food, the plots. A very unusual ending to this one. Only a few left to read. The TV series, while capturing the essence of Montalbano and the other main characters, ends up leaving a lot of the story out, but the setting is spectacular. Nothing beats a book!

Locust Lane by Stephen Amidon

4
LOCUST LANE by Stephen Amidon started at a slow pace, but the more I read, the more interested in the storyline I became. The author did an excellent job in the book’s character development which, in turn, enhanced the twists and turns of the story. Throughout the book the author emphasized the class privilege of the wealthy and privileged such as Oliver and Cecilia. Oliver does exploit his status as he had preferred access to the police and the support of the local plutocracy. Oliver, also, has a history of protecting his flawed son, Jack, with bribes to his son’s alleged victims. Conversely, the victim’s mother, Danielle, is shunned by the police.

The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brockett by John Boyne

3
Eleanor and Alistair Brocket are perfectly normal, and that is what they want. But their youngest child, Barnaby, is decidedly and obviously “different.” This is a fable and an story full of improbable and exciting adventures but teaching a lesson about acceptance and compassion and courage. The entire story is a lesson on tolerance.

So thrilled that she wrote the next chapter in Lilly’s life. I savored every page.

Barbara
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

5
I laughed and I cried, sometimes within two or three pages. Ove (Otto in the new movie) is exasperating, stubborn, and endearing to everyone he encounters. He also is fearless when pushed to the brink. Storyline alternates between his present and his past. Many comments through Ove about the wastefulness, laziness, and inane lives we live today. Oh, but that life were as black and white, cut and dried, as Ove sees them. I imagine we readers all see someone, even themselves, in aspects of Ove's world. And even though this was published in Sweden, I felt as if I were reading an American English writing. Ultimately uplifting.

Lying Beside You by Michael Robotham

I won this Advanced Readers Copy. It is a great mystery with a lot of surprises, and hard to put down. A man is found murdered and his daughter Maya is missing. Forensic psychologist, Cyrus Haven, is called upon to profile the killer, and help find Maya. Soon another woman is missing. Are the two cases related? Very enjoyable mystery.

Another good one by Ms. Douglas. This book will appeal to fans of Ms. Douglas, fans of suspense, and fans of characters with secrets. Lots of secrets kept and many lies.

Connie
The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

4
This is the second book in a series of three. I like the characters that are well developed, but in this book the club manages to get several criminals together and they kill each other. It was a real turn-off by the way they had little regard for life. I don't have any desire to read the third.

Beth
The House Is on Fire by Rachel Beanland

4
THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE is historical fiction about a fire that occurred in a Richmond, Virginia theater in 1811, the worst urban disaster in US history at the time. That makes the book interesting, certainly more so than an account of the fire in a history book. But it’s more than that. This historical fiction is thrilling. Rachel Beanland tells the stories of four actual people who survived the fire. Gilbert is a slave, who is also a hero the night of the fire. Cecily is Gilbert’s niece. Sally is a white woman who escaped the fire but only after helping others when men wouldn’t. And Jack is a young theater hand, just a boy. In telling their stories, Beanland creates a thriller when she explores their possibilities after that night.

In the Shadow Garden by Liz Parker

5
Honestly, this is one of my favorite reads to date. I finished it in a day and could not put it down. The way Liz captivates you with her storytelling from the first chapter on is amazing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a book that will keep you interested from start until finish.

Misfire by Tammy Euliano

5
I have always enjoyed medical thrillers, and this was a good one. Well written, lots of suspense and a surprise ending. Oh yes, did I mention Great Aunt Erm? What a character this lady is, very savvy and downright funny! I had not read the first book as some suggested, but was able to get to know the characters from the first book. It did help that the author is a professor of anesthesiology; she knows her stuff! I really enjoyed this book and intend to read the first in the series and look forward to the third one, if there is one.

1000 White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus

4
How did I never read this book before? The story of May Dodd, one of a group of women who “volunteered” to serve as “Brides for Indians” in 1875 under a US government program launched by the administration of Ulysses Grant. Of course, the White leaders never intended to honor their word or deal with the Indians and went to war with the new families.

Pamela
Last Summer on State Street by Toya Wolfe

5
Enjoyable and fast-paced novel exploring themes of family, belonging, and forgiveness. This is a coming-of-age story that takes place in the Robert Taylor housing projects of 1990s Chicago before the buildings are demolished and the residents are displaced. We see the genesis of gang membership among the neighborhood youth, particularly the brother of the main character, raised by a loving, responsible mother with good values. The author does a commendable job showing how growing up in a poverty stricken, violent neighborhood affects the children born into it.

The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson

Thank you to Book Club Favorites at Simon & Schuster for the free copy for review. This is the story of two Black women in the late 1940s. First is Eleanor, who is studying history at Howard and wants to be an archivist. She meets William Pride, a doctoral student, and quickly falls in love. However, his mother doesn't think Eleanor is worthy of William. Second is Ruby, a young, bright, high school student born out of wedlock. She is going to be the first in her family to go to college, but she meets Shimmy, a White Jewish boy, and falls in love. Both Eleanor and Ruby become pregnant, and how their pregnancies turn out bind them together forever. I loved the story. The difficulties these women had to endure and their lives - amazing.

The Davenports by Krystal Marquis

4
This book started off really slow. I would say the first 50-75% was slower-placed than I prefer in books. However, I did really enjoy the characters. I liked that they each had very distinct personalities, stories, and goals. I really don't know if this needs to be a series because I felt that a lot of the stuff rushed at the end that actually made the book interesting could have been spaced through the book and a satisfying ending to their stories could have been written within this book. That being said, I did like the twists in the book and the ending was really cute. I did feel sad that there were things that happened to the characters that would have been interesting to see rather than just being told they had happened.

Secrets Typed in Blood by Stephen Spotswood

5
Wisecracking Willowjean Parker is back with brilliant investigator Lillian Pentecost. In this installment set in 1947, the team is investigating a series of murders which seem to be copycat murders based on Holly Quick's stories. At the same time, the pair is still trying to gain info on Olivia Waterhouse, an old adversary, so Will is masquerading as a secretary in a law office. Naturally, the duo uses interesting methods to solve the crimes, additionally helping the police solve the string of robberies in the city. Will also has a rule - not to mix business and pleasure, but when business is over, she is all in! I love this series. Smart, funny, yet culturally relevant.

The Hidden One by Linda Castillo

This may be one of my favorite Kate Burkholder books because it gives the reader more insight into her character and her teen years. When a bishop in PA is found dead, a childhood friend of Kate's, Jonas Bowman, is arrested. Elders from the community come to OH to speak with Kate about the murder, and she leaves OH to see if she can understand the circumstances around the murder. What Kate uncovers is a long held secret that the Amish family has held under wraps for years, but when someone could no longer stomach the secret, others took matters in their own hands. Kate is able to discover this - but is put in danger. She wants to clear her childhood friend's name, but at what cost. I liked the story, I liked the characters.

Life Between Seconds by Douglas Weissman

4
This is a tale of love, loss, grief, and finding a way forward. It has a bit of magical fantasy in it - between Peter and his bear, as well as a story of family. Family can be the one you have or the one you make. After Sofia and Gaston had Valentina, they felt their life was complete, but when Valentina disappeared their love shattered. When Peter lost his mom, he couldn't cope. So, fortunately, Sofia and Peter found each other and became great friends. Yet, it wasn't enough. Peter still longed for his mother, and Sofia longed for her daughter. This story was interesting, but I wished the chapters had dates or locations as chapter headers as I was confused as to the timelines and the locations at times. It felt a bit disjointed.

Summer of '99 by J. L. Hyde

I loved the main character. She was flawed, but strong. This was more of a mystery than a thriller. It was well written and a fast read. I have also given her book, DELTA COUNTY, 4 stars and cannot wait to read her other two books.

Flora dies and returns to her favorite book store as a ghost seen only by Tookie. Everything closes down due to the pandemic followed by BLM protests. Tookie, Asema and friends finally find a way to rid the bookstore of Flora. Tookie grows as a person, spouse and stepmother during the year Flora is present in the bookstore. Interesting if sometimes disjointed story of a year in Minneapolis. There were times in reading the book it seemed disjointed or unfocused.

An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed by Helene Tursten

3
Book Two in a very short series featuring nearly-90-year-old Maud and the people who irritate and annoy her and deserve what they get. This picks up where the first book left off, and the plot alternates between her current trip to South Africa and memories of past encounters, where she got even with those who crossed her. Maud’s an astute observer and prides herself on being a quick thinker. And, of course, who pays any attention to a little old lady?

Drunk on Love by Jasmine Guillory

Margot owns a winery with her brother, Elliot, but doesn't feel like he wants her there. She is working hard to expand the winery. One night, after Elliot mentions that he hired a new person to help in the winery without her input, she heads to the local bar. She meets an attractive man, Luke, and what follows is a night of steamy sex. Imagine her surprise (but not mine) when the next day, she finds out that Luke is the new employee. As usual, Guillory's novels are filled with hot, steamy sex in very descriptive language. I wish there was more character development as to why the principals like each other - other than the attraction they feel for each other. However, as a romance novel, it hits all the points.

Charles Dowding's Skills for Growing by Charles Dowding

5
This is a fabulous guide for growing and cultivating vegetables. It is well documented with hundreds of pictures showing every step of the process and the resulting bounty! The pictures and information help to outline how to prepare, cultivate, and reap a healthy harvest. It even depicts what to do in the winter. I think this would be a welcome resource guide for anyone who wants to create a thriving vegetable garden. What really makes this a must for me is the many pictures. Pictures always help to show exactly what to do, and this book does not disappoint.

Maggie is 29 years old, childless and facing a divorce after less than three years of marriage. She cannot cope her group of friends are ready to drop her from their circle because of her complaining and bizarre actions. The story takes place over about a year. I am a baby boomer and could not really relate to the character and the things she said and did. However, I think perhaps a young reader may find it hilarious. I did not, I found it very sad.

The Cuban Heiress by Chanel Cleeton

5
Oooooo…it’s a good one!! Don’t miss it!! Two women with plans and two women who are not portraying who they really are as they board the infamous SS Morro Castle. THE CUBAN HEIRESS has a great setting, a few surprises, and unsavory characters that make the book one you won’t want to put down. Historical fiction fans, women’s fiction fans, and fans of books set on a ship that may historically be unknown to the reader will enjoy this book. And that GORGEOUS cover!!

The Maid by Nita Prose

5
This mystery follows Molly Gray, a maid at a 5-star hotel who happens upon a dead body in one of her assigned suites. Molly is a gentle soul raised by her proper, rule-following grandmother. She runs up against selfish deviants who mistake her naivety for lack of intelligence. The mystery twists and turns with emotional peaks. It is a page-turner and a shorter length.
