Betty
Remembrance by Rita Woods

4
I struggled a bit with this story, trying to keep the three timelines straight. There were a lot of characters to keep track out. As a result, I never felt a connection to any of the characters, except perhaps a bit with Abigail because of the horrors she encountered and her role throughout the rest of the story. This book is a blend of historical fiction and the supernatural, which makes perfect sense with the Haiti and New Orleans settings. I thought the present-day portion of the book was the weakest part. I understand the purpose of that portion, but it was weakly developed, unlike the other two portions.

Karen
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

5
I loved this book. I loved Eleanor. I did not want this book to end. I really took my time reading it so it wouldn’t end. She is so quirky and unique.

Susan
The Wild One by Nick Petrie

5
This is the fifth book in the Peter Ash thriller series and an outstanding entry in the series. It reminds me a lot of the first book in the series, THE DRIFTER - the writing and structure are very similar. I liked THE DRIFTER very much, so this is a good thing! THE WILD ONE is set in Iceland and I adored this setting and the vivid way the author evoked this unusual, intriguing and very challenging landscape.

Elizabeth
Invisible by Andrew Grant

4
I read it because I want to read the new one coming out.

Sharon
The Round House by Louise Erdrich

3
A sad book. Makes one more aware of the life of native Americans on the reservations.

Roberta
Swede Hollow by Ola Larsmo

5
It's historical fiction about immigrants from Sweden to St Paul, MN in the early 1900s.

Sally-Jo
Educated by Tara Westover

5
She's an incredible woman to have gone through such abuse and become a scholar. It was clear that education and drive are the pathway to success.

Susan
American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

5
A mother and son must escape north through Mexico. The reader gets so invested in the characters. A page-turner that kept me up late reading and will stick with me for a long time, if not forever.

Tessa
Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King

4
Book Number 1 in the Bill Hodges Trilogy, featuring retired Detective Bill Hodges in an unnamed midwestern city. King is a masterful writer and he doesn’t disappoint in this thriller/police procedural. The reader always knows who the perpetrator is, but that doesn’t lessen the suspense as Hodges and his assistants race the clock to solve the puzzle.

Laurie
This Is Not How It Ends by Rochelle Weinstein

3
Set in the stunning Florida Keys, this colorful character-driven family saga kept me entertained from page one. Female book review clubs will find plenty discussable themes: love, loss, betrayal, forgiveness. Brava!

Frankie
A Madness of Sunshine by Nalini Singh

4
A mystery and a story of redemption. The author keeps you guessing while introducing you to the landscape of New Zealand. It was a quick and enjoyable read.

Judith
Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney

4
Interesting commentary from 85-year-old Lillian as she walks Manhattan on New Year's Even in 1984 and recounts her life.

Pam
The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

5
A wonderful emotion-packed story with a strong main character who must find her identity in war-torn England.

Michelle
Educated by Tara Westover

4
Oh man, is this a nonfiction book that took me by surprise! I usually slowly make my way through memoirs but this one read like a fictional thriller and I could not stop turning the pages to see what happened next. What a study of how Westover's journey into education allowed her to cope with and understand her family in a whole new light. Her triumphs in the educational world had me cheering her on, but her decisions regarding her family had me angry and emotional. Definitely a moving portrayal of what abuse can do to one's psyche. I have so many more questions about her family, I feel like this story is still unfinished in so many ways.

Gayle
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

5
A good psychological thriller. I had difficulty putting it down.

Vickie
Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

4
I would never guess from reading this book that it’s from a debut author. Ms. Reid writes with a feeling, like a touchstone with the culture about which she writes. Emira is a young African-American woman who is babysitting and doing other part-time jobs while she tries to figure out what she really wants to do with her life. Her boss, blogger and creator of her own brand, Alix Chamberlain, is unaware of the challenges in Emira’s life. Emira’s relationship with little Briar gives wonderful insight into how to talk intelligently to small children. Emira’s being suspected of kidnapping in an upscale market sets the stage for a lot of drama and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this very different book with a unique perspective on life.

Gayle
The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell

5
Another page-turner by Lisa Jewell. This psychological thriller was hard to put down but not too realistic. I enjoyed her writing style and will continue to seek out her books.

Susan
The Guardians by John Grisham

5
Really enjoyed this book. One of his better ones.

Noreen
The Paris Orphan by Natasha Lester

4
A WWII model/photojournalist is in Europe to cover the war. What she and other women had to deal with, talk about sexism, is very interesting. Some parts are really infuriating. It jumps to 2005 and the connections between people from both periods is full of surprises. The book is based on real people and events, so even better.

Donna
The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott

4
Interesting read about the CIA's part in getting DR. ZHIVAGO out to the world.

Elizabeth
Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher

3
This book would probably mean more to a Star Wars fan, which I’m not. It does give a window into what it’s like to be defined by a character you played at 19 your whole life. And it was a bittersweet read knowing Fisher would die unexpectedly so soon after finishing this book. She also has a dry sense of humor I appreciate. But it was a bit repetitive and the description of the affair with Harrison Ford made me cringe. He took advantage of a young, naive girl.

Ivy
The Deserter by Nelson DeMille with Alex DeMille

5
Absolutely riveting and intense story of a soldier gone AWOL and the journey by two government officials to bring him back from the outskirts of Caracas. If one ever wanted to know about the atrocities of living conditions in Caracas, then THE DESERTER will surely immerse you in it. Right up until the end I felt like this was journey that no one would win.

William
A Divided Loyalty by Charles Todd

4
This is the first Inspector Rutledge novel I have had the pleasure of reading. The historical setting, plot, and storytelling are all first-rate. Inspector Rutledge is sent to a small village to investigate the death of a young woman unknown to anyone in the village or nearby villages. Persistence and doggedness are Rutledge’s strength and he eventually solves the mystery. This leads him into a second unsolved case that conflicts him as a close friend, also a detective, is involved. The novel is a solid entry in the Inspector Rutledge series and will send me back to read the earlier series books.

Dianne
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

4
Generational saga of sisters from Africa, one a slave and one married to a white man.

Connie
The Invisible Wall by Harry Bernstein

5
Loved it. Easy read but very educational. Learned a lot about the time around World War I and the effects on this particular neighborhood. Highly recommend it.

Trezeline
Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin

5
A beautifully-written book with twists and turns along with suspense. It tells an interesting story.

Joy
Whisper Network by Chandler Baker

4
When the company’s CEO suddenly dies, it means that their complicated boss will take over the company. As he accepts the promotion, new female employees will be targeted.

Eva
Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

5
Before reading this book, we read THIS TENDER LAND. Both stories take place during the 1930s and describe the poverty and squalor of the poor and how helpless and taken advantage of they were.

Paula
Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo

5
First in a series about a woman police chief. She was raised Amish but left the religion and now she is chief in the area she grew up. Very good. Speaks to the difference in the two worlds and also about some criminal cases.

Margaret
The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

2
Publicity compared this novel to GONE GIRL. The word "Girl" is in both titles, but other than that, I'd say "No" to the comparison. Plot is about the kidnapping of a judge's adult daughter. Chapters are alternating first-person narratives from the kidnapper, the mother, the police detective, and finally at the end, the victim. Different time frames were used with each chapter having a headline either Before or After the victim returns home. It was confusing if I didn't pay close attention to the headline. I managed to stick with the book even tho I found it hard to connect with the characters. There's a lot of repetition especially about the cold weather and the few twists were predictable. It ended with some questions & confusion for me.

Emily
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

5
Ari is a 15-year old teenager who lives with his parents, who thinks that everything/everyone around him is not co-operating with him, and that the problem with his life is that it’s someone else’s idea. He seldom talks with his older twin sisters. His older brother is in prison, and his parents never want to talk about him, and there isn’t anything in the house that shows his existence, as though he is dead. Ari doesn’t have a lot of friends, is taciturn and a loner, always tries to have a better understanding of himself and this whole universe thing. However, his acquaintance with Dante at the swimming pool has unexpectedly changed the course of his life. Their friendship later blossoms into something very special and sentimental.

Emily
The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica

4
THE OTHER MRS. is my first book by Mary Kubica, and it immediately captured my interest! I have just discovered a very brilliant and talented master of suspense, who has written such a twisty and compelling thriller. Will Foust has inherited an old and ominous house in a small-town Maine from his sister who died surprisingly. Sadie, Will’s wife, agrees to move from their unpleasant and disquieted past in Chicago, in order to have a fresh start there. However, what awaits them is sinister, haunting and evil. Are they able to save themselves, especially Sadie from this harrowing fate? It is very engrossing and keeps one turning the pages until the end. I highly recommend THE OTHER MRS. to any fan of psychological suspenseful thrillers.

Emily
Keeping Lucy by T. Greenwood

5
Ginny had given birth to her second child on a full blood moon night, and named her “Lucy”. However, Ginny was stunned and heart-ached when she learned that the baby was born with Down Syndrome, as well as heart defects, hearing and vision problems. She was immediately sent to Willowridge, a special school for feeble-minded, with very inhuman and extreme unhygienic living conditions. Ginny was aghast; and decided to rescue Lucy and to keep her safe. KEEPING LUCY is a heart-wrenching and poignant story about a mother’s unconditional love, who would sacrifice whatever it takes to fight for her daughter’s rights and justice as a human, as her daughter.

I Will Make You Pay by Teresa Driscoll

4
That scary call, a distorted voice with a chilling threat, came on an ordinary Wednesday. Alice Henderson, a journalist for the local newspaper, was sent to the edge of her seat. However, such sickening threats did not stop; instead more hostile and disturbing messages were stalking Alice every Wednesday since. Hence, Alice’s nightmare began, and her life was in great danger!! The boyfriend hired a private investigator, Matthew Hill, to dig deeper on the stalker as well as to keep her safe. And then, Matthew discovered that Alice had her own dark past and secrets!! This is my first book by Teresa Driscoll, and I love its thrilling dark secrets and web of twists and turns! I am looking forward to reading her future thrillers!!

Bonnie
The German House by Annette Hess

5
Best novel I've read since WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING. Un-put-down-able.

Cynthia
Swords of the King (Battle Scars, Book 3) by Charlene Newcomb

5
SWORDS OF THE KING is the third book in the Battle Scars series by Charlene Newcomb. Henry de Grey and Stephan L'Aigle are two knights in King Richard the Lionheart's army. Their lives are complicated by the fact the two are lovers. Their closest friends are Robin Hood, Little John, an Allen. It is apparent that Ms. Newcomb has done her research and knows the 12th Century very well. This book takes place when Richard is near his reign of power and his brother, John, is biding his time to become king. Richard virtually ignored the lovers, but would John? Richard has embedded his best archer in John's army to be a spy. Would John ever believe that Robin could possibly be loyal to him and him alone?

Alicia
The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle

5
This book had very intriguing characters whom I loved getting to know. It had quick enough pacing to keep me interested. I enjoyed the supernatural elements very much.

Anna Servati
The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson

3
I liked the premise of this book and I enjoyed the references to books. However, I didn't especially like the main character. Also some of the other characters were not well developed. The scavenger hunt to find out the mystery was interesting but at times seemed to drag on. Because of that, the book seemed to drag on and was too long. I know it was the author's debut novel and so I thought she made a good effort in her research and storytelling.

ann marie
The Library Book by Susan Orlean

5
I just loved the way the author wrote about libraries and all the inner workings of all the jobs of big libraries. Also, this book was about the fire and destruction of the Low Angeles Public Library. It was so great, I definitely view libraries in a totally different way, never mind the fact the author draws you in, especially with her description of funny characters roaming the lanes of books. Great read!

Betty
This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

5
This novel centers around the evil policies of the assimilation of Native American children. The story is a combination of THE ODYSSEY and HUCKLEBERRY FIN, but has its own voice. A great read.

Debra
This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

5
Very seldom do I try to read a book slowly because I do not want it to end. I couldn't wait for this book to come out. It was the first book I ever pre-ordered and it transported me and filled my high expectations. THIS TENDER LAND is a book to be savored, yet the perfect pacing moves it on. Characters with depth and detail, a moving plot (literally and figuratively!), writing that is honed and crafted. Hard scary things, loss, growth, resilience, anger, questioning. It is an epic story told by a great storyteller.

Debra
Twenty-One Truths About Love by Matthew Dicks

4
4 sparkling stars. Things I thought about this clever and creative book: • It took a few pages to get into this list – a different reading flow than a book, but fun to discover • The story unfolded through lists • Lists were about characters (mostly Jill, wife), dad, lack of money, shopping lists, chores, you name it. • I highlighted things that evoked smiles – there were many • Hardest things (about owning a bookstore) – watching great books go unread and terrible books sell like hotcakes • December list gets to reasons he fell in love with wife – charming and earthy

Debra
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

5
I was impressed! I learned much about apartheid. The stories are well written. Usually humorous, with plenty of surprise and seriousness in the mix. Just heard it's going to be a movie. Yay! I think it's a story people need to know.

Kierra
The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls by Mona Eltahawy

5
One word comes to mind: stunning. Never before has the fight against patriarchy—and within that the fight against racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia—been so clearly and proudly defined. With deep looks at the #MeToo Movement and the personal journey of the author and other feminist activists, Mona Eltahawy encourages women and girls to tap into their fury in order to defy, disrupt, and destroy the patriarchy. This book has given me an uncompromising feminist manifesto to live by and a passion to constantly dismantle this patriarchal world, not simply to be allowed the same "freedoms" that men have, but to have the choice of defining what my own freedom is.

Amanda
What Happens in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand

5
Love this series!

Elizabeth
Cartier's Hope by M. J. Rose

5
The story of the Hope Diamond, women journalists, hidden identities, locked bookcases, and family secrets greet the reader of Cartier’s Hope. Historical fiction fans will enjoy CARTIER'S HOPE as well as mystery fans and those readers who enjoy strong female characters. And...there can't be an absence of some romance with all those gorgeous jewels, right? Enjoy when you read CARTIER’S HOPE. It is an all-around "gem" of a read.

Donna
The Beneficiary: Fortune, Misfortune, and the Story of My Father by Janny Scott

3
This author wants to know more about her parents and ancestors. As she delves into their history she learns of the growth of wealth in her family and how it affected the heirs. She also learns of the lifestyle expectations they placed on themselves when they could no longer financially support it. Money doesn't always last and it certainly doesn't provide happiness and lack of problems for themselves and their heirs.

Donna
I'm Fine and Neither Are You by Camille Pagan

5
This wonderful book is a shot in the arm as a reminder that "it takes courage to be yourself when everyone else expects you to be someone else". We go through life saying "I'm fine" and we're not being honest. Hopefully, it doesn't take a crisis to admit the truth. The title is perfect.

Donna
The Network by L. C. Shaw

5
This story, though fiction, is frightening in that our society seems to be following the same path of decline. The forces of evil and greed are presented in a manipulated way and people are brainwashed into believing they're doing good. Wow, all I can say is wow.

Gil
The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn

5
What a nut job! Anna is agoraphobic and drinks all day and has delusions. Yet she insists that she saw a woman being stabbed to death in a house across the way. Laughingly, she saw this through her camera. How can you believe her? Why does she have agoraphobia, a fear of going outside and being with people? You have to read this book to see what happens. Surprises all the way. It's easy to read.

Marian
Cilka's Journey by Heater Morris

5
I enjoyed reading this book. It has some of the same characters as her other book, THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ.

Shirley
The City by Dean Koontz

4
This was a bit, only a bit, different from what Dean Koontz normally writes. It was a new change and I enjoyed it. I do like all of his books and this one just added to the list. The young man that is the main character, Jonah, describes his life and what he encounters growing up in a vivid telling that had me engrossed. It was a great read.

Mickey
Deadly Commitment by Kathy Harris

5
DEADLY COMMITMENT is my first book by Kathy Harris. I really enjoyed reading this suspenseful story of Danielle and her determination to help with a criminal investigation involving her current “fiancé” and realizing that God is needed always. Overall I give this book five stars and I will be following this author to read more of her books. I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from JustRead Tour Blind Tour (blind date with a book). All views expressed are my honest opinion.

Thomas
Twisted Twenty-Six by Janet Evanovich

5
Excellent book. A good read.

Thomas
The Guardians by John Grisham

5
Excellent book. I really enjoyed reading it a lot.

Jane
The Case of the Spellbound Chilld by Mercedes Lackey

5
I picked this book off the “New” shelf at the library. The story is set during the period that Sherlock Holmes pretends to be dead in order to catch Professor Moriarity. Dr. Watson, his wife, and some of the Baker St Irregulars have discovered various supernatural talents. They use their wit and talents to solve mysteries. Yes, I used the plural because the best news is that the author had written at least a dozen books in the series. No more waiting impatiently for the next book to come out. I will be catching up on the backlist!

Susan
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

5
It was interesting to read about the discrimination of the bluet people. Discrimination exists in many different forms. I liked the idea of the library women/men delivering books to people way off the beaten path. It is a great story about a different time and a different place.

Samantha
The Whisper Man by Alex North

5
Wow!! 5/5 stars from me! THE WHISPER MAN is a debut novel written by Alex North and I highly recommend reading this if you enjoy thriller, suspenseful, creepy, page-turning storylines. This is a very well-written, well thought out book. I personally liked how the story keeps you from wondering what’s going to happen next, the way certain things relate to each other and the way characters intertwine with each other. There are many different point of views written in short chapters, which I also like as it makes easier stopping points, even though it’s hard to put this book down! THE WHISPER MAN is hands-down one of the best books I’ve read!

Samantha
Theme Music by T. Marie Vandelly

5
WOW!! 5 stars all the way for T. Marie Vandelly's novel THEME MUSIC! This book was incredible. When I was lucky enough to receive an advanced readers copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review, I wasn't sure what it was even about but I was seriously hooked from the very first sentence. It is so graphic and detailed to every little piece of information. It's bloody, gory and gruesome. And I never would have guessed the ending at all; of course, it all makes so much sense but wow! I was shocked to find out that this is T. Marie Vandelly's first novel, I would have never guessed and I look forward to reading any future work she creates.

Michelle
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

5
I read this book over a year ago. I've yet to read anything else that's given me a book hangover.

Joy
American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

4
A good book about a bookstore owner in Mexico.

Elizabeth
The Escape Room by Megan Goldin

3
If you are the type of reader who quits a book after 50 or 100 pages if it hasn’t grabbed you by then, you might regret this in the case of THE ESCAPE ROOM. It has a great second half. Most other reviews of this book say that it is can’t-put-it-down good. But they aren’t speaking of the first half. If you can wait 150 or so pages, you really will see why they say that. Sara gets a job in finance on Wall Street. She’s making six figures so doesn’t want to quit even though her coworkers, four of them in particular, are so unfriendly, even nasty.

Sean
Juror #3 by James Patterson and Nancy Allen

1
This was actually two novels in one and both were terrible. James Patterson didn't write this. These books that get pumped out with his name on them are so cookie-cutter. This was like a John Grisham novel for toddlers. It's embarrassingly bad. My head hurts.

Lola
The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See

5
Wonderful character development. The story and characters keep coming back to my memory!!

Tessa
The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti

2
An orphan with a missing hand falls in with a group of scam artists/thieves in early 19th century New England. I had heard good reports of this novel and I was intrigued by the premise. Tinti captured my attention at the beginning and certainly kept me reading, but I found it very dark and distasteful. The scenarios, schemes, and twists in the plot just seemed like a list of “what will be next to befall this kid.” Tinti does give the reader a real sense of the time and place. I also really enjoyed Mrs. Sands and descriptions of life in her boarding house. But in the end, the things I liked didn’t quite make up for what I didn’t like about it.

Cammie
The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

5
THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ tells the story of Lale Sokolov who becomes the tattooist at Auschwitz-Birkenau because he can speak many languages. While numbering a new transport, he meets and falls in love with Gita. His job as the tattooist allows him much more “freedom” than the other prisoners; however, he doesn’t escape the brutality and hardship of the concentration camps. His hope, determination, and faith in humanity allowed him to survive and helped encourage many others including Gita.

Thomas
The Widow by Fiona Barton

Very good read. I enjoyed the book very much.

See Me by Nicholas Sparks

4
An excellent read. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Lynne
The Library Book by Susan Orlean

5
This is a fascinating look at a variety aspects of libraries, library books, and librarians, centered around the tragic fire at the Los Angeles Central Library in 1986.

Margaret
Normal People by Sally Rooney

2
It has no quotes for the dialogue and the time line jumped around excessively. Two main characters, Marianne and Connell were "friends w/benefits" and kept their relationship a secret. They had different backgrounds; she was rich, he wasn't. Both were unlikable and unbelievable so I didn't connect with them. I assume the author meant it to be a love story with in-depth character studies, but it was about their sex life. They couldn't stay away from each other even when they were dating others! Since the author is young, the characters and plot seemed to be the world her generation inhabits. They have never had to do without, are well-educated, cynical, and have political insight. But not smart enough to stop smoking and drinking too much.

Donna
For Those Who Dare by John Anthony Miller

5
1961 and overnight a wall is being built between East and West Berlin. Families are separated by this wall and freedom is lost to those on the East side. This is an exciting and well-researched book on the struggle to survive and to escape to West Berlin. Who can you trust when anyone on either side of the wall could be an informant, even a family member?

ROSEMARIE
The Second Home by Christina Clancy

5
Publishing in June 2020. I was lucky enough to secure a copy from NetGalley. I started this book with no idea of what I would find inside. You see, this book is not really about a second home - it's about family, love, desperation, deceit - but more than anything else its about the every lasting love between family members. Ann and Poppy live a idyllic life, but as life can do things change one summer at the family house. This causes many years of heartache and secrets. I found myself turning pages and hoping for the best. I recommend you do the same.

Thomas
Carnal Curosity by Stuart Woods

Private Paris by James Patterson

5
I enjoyed reading the book very much. It was really a good read.

Kimberley
The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman

4
Based on a true story, this urban folklore crosses centuries. It is spooky with amazing character development. It dares the reader to go from where few have returned. It is a good length and perfect for the haunting season.

Francisca
Love, Lies and Spies by Cindy Anstey

3
Anstey has written a young-adult, mystery/romance set in Regency England. I really enjoyed this fun, fast read. I could definitely hear the echo of Jane Austen. I liked Julianna’s spunk and intelligence. I also appreciated the slow-burn pace of the central romance. I did figure out the master spy/traitor ahead of the reveal, but not by much. Nicely done!

Myrna
Home Field by Hannah Gersen

This is an interesting look at a family's grieving after a mother's suicide in a small rural town in Maryland, circa the 1990s.

This is a must-read for anyone who has a child with special needs, knows someone who does, or teachers (aides) who work with children with special needs. It brings home the idea that you really don't know what it is like for parents with special needs children and someone's interpretation from the outside looking in may (and most likely is) be so far from what they "think" they "know".

Totally whimsical love story of boy meets girl and the alphabet of Love doesn't quite cooperate, till the end.

The Long Flight Home by Alan Hlad

Loved the book. I learned so much about homing pigeons and how they were used during World War II. Also the romantic additions gave the tale a wonderful plot line to follow.

Everything I Need to Know I Learned From a Little Golden Book by Diane Muldrow

5
Inspiring and fun! Great letter to the reader introduces the concept of presenting one-line ideas tied to pages from various golden books. Well worth the read and re-read and passing along. Anyone can enjoy it even if (Alas!) thy have never read a Golden Book, but it's definitely nostalgic if you have.

I wanted a light and easy read and this is it. Very good mystery but quick read and I did not figure out "who done it" until the story ended. It was a surprise.

Downfall by Brian Lutterman

5
A new author to me. It is FANTASTIC!! This is the first book in a murder mystery series/thriller. The heroine (Pen) is a paraplegic lawyer in a wheelchair. She has the ability to think out-of-the-box, and also has the friends and resources to follow clues to satisfactory conclusions. The writing is descriptive and pulls the reader through the story. The story starts with a woman being thrown off a 23rd floor balcony but the reason is not revealed (until much later). I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Dear Edward by Anne Napolitano

4
So many friends have read this and I was excited to read it. It didn’t disappoint. You just fall in love with each character for different reasons - the aunt and uncle for their love and patience, the friend and of course Edward who really has a challenging time years after the crash. Very well written and such a different book than the norm.

Well written, regarding Harvey Weinstein and an in-depth look at how he was able to get away with all of the abuse he perpetuated over the years.

Mercy House by Alena Dillon

5
Thank you Harper Collins and Alena Dillon for sending me an Advanced Reader Copy of MERCY HOUSE. MERCY HOUSE is the story of Sister Evelyn and the nuns who reside at Mercy House who stop at nothing to save and restore the broken, beaten, battered women who show up at Mercy House during all hours of the night seeking refuge and help. This was an intense, compelling and captivating story of a group of women who defied all odds against them to protect the battered women of Mercy House. As I read this, I often found a tear running down my cheek as I read about the horrors each women was forced to endure. When the Bishop arrives to inspect Mercy House, Sister Evelyn is forced to face the man she loathes.

It is a good story about the pack horse librarians of Kentucky and what they went through to get books to the people who lived in the hills.

Joyce
The Old Success by Martha Grimes

4
After many years and thirty books, Grimes continues the story of Scotland Yard Inspector Richard Jury, his friend Melrose Plant, and the various denizens of Long Piddleton as they engage in another multiple murder investigation. This one brings back detective Brian Macalvie, whose unerring instincts always add to the story. The author's love for animals is well known, and in this book a racehorse plays a major role. And, also as usual in books by Grimes, a young child is central to the plot. All in all, I was delighted to see that the author is still writing such witty entertainments.

The Human Son by Adrian J. Walker

4
Loved this book about how a new species is taking care of Earth while trying to determine if humans should be allowed to populate the planet again, after nearly destroying it centuries earlier. There's a lot of philosophy and deep thinking, but also some humor and heart.

The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman

4
This is an unsettling horror story of a vile act committed in 1931 in Pilot’s Creek, Virginia, and how it echoes through the decades. Ella Louise and Jessica Ford, mother and daughter, are accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. Their remains are separated and buried in the woods, never to be reunited. So begins an urban legend, that inspires a 1970’s horror movie, about the little witch girl of Pilot’s Creek. Is it just a legend, or a curse without end? The town, townspeople and the cast and crew of the movie will be forever changed when they awaken restless spirits in the woods.

19th Christmas by James Patterson

2
I am a huge fan of James Patterson's and have read the Women's Club from the first one. I must say I was very disappointed with this new one. Claire and her husband are away but the others are around. They are trying to find out what is going to happen that is planned to disrupt the city on Christmas. The only part I enjoyed was the surprised Joe gets. Not one I would recommend.

This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

5
This is a well-written story of four orphans looking for real homes. Time frame is the Great Depression. The characters are well developed. I am a Charles Dickens fan and I had thoughts of his books as I read this one. I am an avid reader and it is hard to believe that this is the only book that I have read by this author. I read it as a library book but I intend to buy one as I am sure I will read this book again.

The Orphan Mother by Robert Hicks

3
Mariah Redding was a slave to Carrie McGavock from a young age until she became free. She then became a midwife tending to both the black and white women of Franklin, Tennessee. Mariah has a grown son, Theopolis, who is politically active and is murdered during a rally. She begins a quest to find out who and why her beloved son died such a violent death. The second half of this book was much better then the first, but there was a lot of religion in the details.

Linda
This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

5
I can’t say enough good things about this book! The story, set in the depression (1932) follows four orphans who escape the horrors of The Lincoln Indian Training School, and set off by canoe for St. Louis, intending to follow the Gilead, Minnesota, and Mississippi rivers. The story is told by Odie O’Banion, 12 years old. Mr. Krueger’s prose flows beautifully, and we really get to know the children as they travel. They face many dangers, meeting some desperate characters who wish them harm, and some others who help them on their way. All in all, a beautiful tale, beautifully told.

The Vintage Caper by Peter Mayle

3
3.5 stars. This is Book #1 in the Sam Levitt series. Mayle has given the reader a crime caper with a plausible (if fantastic) plot, a wonderful cast of characters, and mouth-watering descriptions of food and wine. Mayle’s love of France shines through; I could practically smell the aromas from a restaurant’s kitchen and feel the sun on my face. And I love that twisty ending! A fast, fun, delicious read.

Kathy
The Spymistress by Jennifer Chiaverini

5
You know a book touched your soul when you shed a tear at the end. THE SPYMISTRESS is that book. It’s a fascinating fictional account of a real life Union spy in the heart of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Elizabeth Van Lew believed that slavery should be abolished and the Union should be preserved. She risked losing everything, her life, that of her family members and friends for her beliefs. Jennifer Chiaverini takes the reader to a time and a place that should never be forgotten. It is an inspiring, heartbreaking, uplifting and eye-opening read that I highly recommend!!

Casper and Jasper and the Terrible Tyrant by Tilia Klebenov Jacobs

4
This was an enjoyable book that I will be passing on to my nieces. This fantasy takes place in a land that includes trolls, gargoyles, dragons and many other creatures that are forces of good and evil. Twin boys, Casper and Jasper, are separated from their parents when they were babies. The boys are interesting and clever when encountering obstacles in their attempt to find their parents.

When Dr. Skinner died unexpectedly, his whole family was shattered. Mrs. Skinner retreated from reality by shutting herself in her room and only coming out occasionally to check on her four children. The book dealt with how each sibling reacted to this traumatic event and how each handled their grief.

5
A great romance! Everyone had always been subservient to Prince Sebastian of Alucia and he found it refreshing when Eliza Tricklebank treated him like a normal man. Jan
Someone We Know by Shari Lapena

4
Lapena has another great mystery with this complex story. The first murder happens to a woman in a close knit community; everyone knows everyone. Someone sees something. Lapena mixes the murder story up with two teens who are very maladapted. From the beginning, there are many suspects. As the detectives go through the evidence, situations get misread and misunderstood and no one seems to be telling the whole truth. Neighbors delay telling the detectives that they saw someone, or read something. What a muddle. This is just a great mixed up mystery -- keep your characters straight, even if they do not keep their stories straight. And add the mixture, who is sleeping with whom? And who trusts his or her spouse?

The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald

3
THE NIGHT OLIVIA FELL begins when a woman receives a phone call that her teenage daughter has had an accident is in the hospital. She soon learns that her daughter brain dead, but in an unforeseen twist, she must be kept on life support because she is pregnant. This is a twisty, suspenseful novel. My guess as to "whodunit" changed throughout the book, and I still never guessed correctly. This isn't the best book I have ever read, but it is engrossing and entertaining; I guess it could be considered a dark beach read.

Cut and Run by Fern Michaels

4
This is classic Fern Michaels writing in the Sisterhood series, so the characters are the group that you’re already familiar with if you’re into the series. (I would not recommend that you read this if you’ve not read any of the Sisterhood books, as it assumes you know the backstory of the characters.) A good read for fans of Michaels.

MICHELLE
This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

4
A very likable book. Told through the eyes of a 12-year-old orphan boy, the story takes you on a trip beginning on the banks of a Minnesota river after he and three others escape from "The Black Witch" and the Lincoln Indian Training School. The storytelling is simple yet there are moments of pure magic that Krueger brings forth. There were many passages that I stopped and gave pause to and went back and re-read with appreciation. Not just beautiful writing but beautiful, soulful meanings that showed the wonderful heart that must be behind this author.

MICHELLE
Idaho by Emily Ruskovich

3
Another hard book to rate. I'm torn between a three and a four. The writing is five-star worthy. Poetic, beautiful, artistically crafted unlike so many other books. This is a writer to watch for. However, for me, I needed more answers. Without giving much away, WHY? The main action that the story is wrapped around is never answered deep enough for me. I also didn't understand fully the reason for Elliot's story. I don't mind a story that leaves some things unanswered, but such crucial questions which a whole story is wrapped around should be better answered, in my opinion. This book would make for a great book group discussion but I think it would be a frustrating read for some.

Not Quite Nice by Celia Imrie

3
3.5 stars. In her debut novel, Imrie has given us a sort of “coming-of-old-age” story featuring a group of British expats living in a small town on the French Riviera. I thought it was an enjoyable, fast novel. Perfect for a vacation read. The bad guys get what’s coming to them, and everyone learns a lesson or two. It’s not exactly a happily-ever-after ending, but it gives me hope for the future of these characters. There are two more books in the series (thus far), and I look forward to reading them.

Mercy House by Alena Dillon

5
This story is about a group of women - some down on their luck and the nuns who try to help them. One nun, Sister Evelyn, has a story all of her own. She keeps a secret most of the book and it is this secret that influences everything she does. Without giving anything away I can say this story is very much about many of the things we read in today's newspapers. In summary, it shows the strength and will power of women and how the accomplish the goals in their life. Read it - I think you will enjoy.

What Unbreakable Looks Like by Kate McLaughlin

5
WHAT UNBREAKABLE LOOKS LIKE is a powerful story that will make you want to rise up and make a change in our society today. Human trafficking is a timely subject that is quietly happening in many cities. The book starts with a bang of action as 17-year-old Lex is rescued from a motel. She is the lucky one who has someone to love her and help her readjust to "normal" teenage life. The first person narrative feels like a real life experience. Emotions are raw but mature. I was sure the author end note would tell us this was partially memoir, but it is fiction. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down!
