Lynn Demsky
Lead-Pipe Cinch by Christy Evans

5
I'm enjoying this series of mysteries. Georgiana is more than interesting, intelligent, morale and all the things that make up a good person. Dump in all the other characters of the small town she moved back to, her friends and is truly more than a good read! Plus fun finding more about plumbing while reading --- author puts in good tips for standard household problems also! Have to find the next one!

Mary Rodriguez
Long Drive Home by Will Allison

4
A great morality read about family.

Lori
I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

4
Fun book reminiscent of the author's Shopaholic books. Great escapist reading - perfect for a vacation.

Lori
Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten

4
An intense detective novel based in Sweden with a 40-something woman detectives leading an investigation. It was a little slow reading, but gave me a sense of life in Sweden and its societal problems. There were interesting characters and a very good plot.

Cindy Dubinski
Mrs. Kimble by Jennifer Haigh

4
This is the first book I've read by this author. I found it a quick read. The characters are interesting and her references to music and dress brings me back to the 70s in a believable and realistic manner.

Pat Boisclair
Tomatoland by Barry Estabrook

4
Very interesting report on the tomatoes we eat, how they grown, are harvested (much to green and then gassed to the color red desired) and how the migrants are treated by the large tomato companies. A book that holds your interest and a book you would probably not pick up as a Book Club read but well worth it. Great discussion.

Amy Nash
My Name Is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira

4
As a frequent user of our medical system, I shutter to think how anyone survived the Civil War. Great historical fiction.

Barbara Boik
Stay Awake by Dan Chaon

5
Excellent short stories-highly recommended. Pick up his other short story collections Fitting Ends and Among the Missing and his novels Await Your Reply and You Remind Me of Me.

Judy Hendrix
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5
This young adult book has everything: excitement, suspense, love, pain, and sacrifice. The plot is well thought out. The characters are well-rounded and believable. This is a really enjoyable book I highly recommend to young and old alike.

Pat Boisclair
Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy

4
The Author presents the novel in a realistic way with a feeling of "today". The characters could all be people you know in your every day life. Our Club rated it a 9 after discussion and the discussion was wonderful.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

4
Finally got to read this book after hearing so much about it. I was kind of disappointed. The movie seemed better to me.

Lesley Fry
Your Replublic is Calling You by Young-Ha Kim

3
Have you ever read a book by a Korean author? Read a book about Korea? Nope, I didn't think so. This one poses an interesting problem: what will a North Korean sleeper spy living a normal life in South Korea for almost 20 years do when he suddenly receives the message to return home? Since I'm less than halfway through the book, I don't know yet, but I'm certainly going to find out. I may even give it another star.

Vickie N
Home Front by Kristin Hannah

5
This is such a fantastic book I recommend it to everyone. You will not be disappointed and you will look at returning soldiers differently. I have not been this engrossed in a book in ages. Great from beginning to end. Keep the kleenex near.

Heather
Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman

4
This memoir is absolutely fascinating!! Both in terms of being the personal story of a remarkable young woman and a glimpse into the isolated world of Satmar Hasidic Judaism. I highly recommend it!

Nancy Snodgrass
The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin

4
A wonderful book that hooks you from the first page. It's real eye-opener about the New World's energy and ideas vs the Old World's conventions and culture. Who knew the late 19th century was so modern. A historical eye opener.

Irene Unger
Once Upon a Secret by Mimi Alford

3
The memoirs of a woman who had a sexual relationship with John F Kennedy at the time of his presidency, when she was a 19-year old intern. It is very easy reading, and the nostalgia of the Camelot years is quite interesting. I recommend it.

Coral Harrison
The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye

3
The story is set in New York City about 1845. Timothy and Val Wilde were orphaned when their parents were killed when were children. Val is a firefighter and is able to get Timothy a job on the police force. This is a different time than now so it quite interesting what goes on. It is a mystery as well. It does follow the actual things that happened at that time. It is hard to realize that people had to live that way at that time.

Barbara Scott-Cannon
Red Mist by Patricia Cornwell

5
This is a very suspenseful and intriguing book about a new technology. You will keep turning the pages and won't want to put it down. As Dr. Kay Scarpetta works on a unique mystery, flashbacks and insights intertwine.

Gayle Lin
The Darlings by Cristina Alger

4
I'm about halfway through this book about Wall Street executives, Ponzi schemes, and once wealthy families now living beyond their means and I'm mesmerized. Throw in a secret love affair and just keep turning the pages.

Lynn Jarrett
The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

5
This is a refreshing story based on a Russian fairy tale. The novel takes place in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1900s. One childless couple builds a "snow child" in the back yard. The next day the "snow child" is gone, but there is a single set of footprints leading to the forest. What follows will make you laugh, cry, and feel good about life in the Alaskan wilderness. Kudos to Ms. Ivey for a first novel. I look forward to her next book.

Leslie
Walter's Muse by Jean Davies Okimoto

4
Maggie has retired from her job as an elementary school librarian. Starting a new chapter in her life, she is looking forward to long summer days of unstructured time spent reading, walking on the beach, kayaking and just doing whatever she wants. After an early summer storm hits, Maggie’s plans make a sudden change. This was an enjoyable story about relationships, starting over and second chances. It is told with wit and humor and has an engaging cast of characters.

Charlotte Karpinecz
The Chalk Girl by Carol O'Connell

5
This was another one of her "Mallory" novels. It was a very good book, kept my interest all the way through. Brought out all emotions a person could have. I loved it and found it very hard to put down. I have read all of the Mallory Novels by Carol O'Connell and they never disappoint. I am totally sure that you would love it too. The main person in the novels, detective Mallory, was found on the streets of New York City as a small girl, was brought up with a detective's family, actually just him and his wife and then turned into one of New York's finest herself when she was older. She is a genius as far as computers go and can hack into anything with no problem, but of course, her foster father, never wanted to know anything about it, so would just overlook it. She is a strange girl, but you will love what and how she accomplishes things and gets things done to get justice for the people who are wronged in the crimes. I loved this book and I am sure you will too.

Allison gardner
Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin

3
Very strange story but interesting about a woman doctor from Salerno Italy in the year 1150.

Judy Haskell
The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall

4
I'm about half-way through this hysterically sad and ruefully funny novel. Golden and his multi-family brood remind me of "Big Love" with it's day-to-day complications, hierarchy of wives, and children who deserve emotional rescue...it's hard to imagine a happy ending, but the quality and pacing of Udall's writing promise a satisfying conclusion.

Nancy Banks
The Man From St. Petersburg by Ken Follet

3
This book starts out a little slow, but becomes very entertaining very fast.

Summer Madkour
Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

4
It's good.

Janice Hoaglin
The Good Muslim by Tahmima Anam

4
I did not know until I finished this book that it is part of a trilogy; now I will have to go back and read the first in this series. I also must admit that I am fairly ignorant about the country of Bangladesh, which is the setting for this book, and so learned something of it's history. This story switches between two time frames--the early 1970's, just after a revolutionary war has ended in Bangladesh, and the mid 1980's, when traumas from the war are being uncovered and still felt. The main characters are the Haque family. Maya is a young woman and an Obstetrician, and has just returned home, having spent the last seven years in a very rural, fundamentalist village caring for women. Returning home she finds her brother, Sohail, has become a religious leader in a fundamentalist sect. Maya's struggles with both the political and religious changes occurring around her tell the broader story of her country, and their fragile identity during this historic time.

Laura Coppens
Force of Nature by C. J. Box

5
I am just starting this book this morning, but if I know C. J. Box, he won't disappoint! My husband just finished it and says it is a great read!!

REBECCA STEPHEN
Call of Duty by Marcus Brotherton and Lynn D. Compton

4
I've read three other books about the Band Of Brothers, and I love this book too. It told of his struggles to go to college and work at the same time before the war. He was a good leader and when the war ended, he was a policeman, then politics. He loved his second wife and two adopted daughters. I recently found out of his passing, he will be missed.

Geri Krempa
The Blue Bottle Club by Penelope Stokes

4
This was the very first book my book club read 14 years ago! While unpacking from our recent move out of state, I decided to re read it and I still love it!

Barbara Brooks
The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman

4
Hard to believe that this is a true story and not a novel. Very interesting.

Elaine Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

4
I enjoyed this book...a favorite author.

Lorraine Jarvis
Sandman by Morgan Hannah MacDonald

5
If you like serial killer novels you will enjoy this one. Could not put it down. The killer will surprise you.

Jo Ann Conrad
Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

4
This was a great book about Mother's love from an adoptive parent's perspective and from the biological mother's perspective. The story is set in India and America and does a good job of presenting both countries. A very good read.

Marcia Rutten
Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James

3
I'm not a erotica fan but this book wasn't as shocking as I thought is was going to be. Some parts made me uncomfortable. But those parts were mostly when I felt Ana was settling and not so much the sexual content.

Jean L
Secret Sanction by Brian Haig

4
I like the book and the main character, Major Sean Drummond. He has been picked to investigate a mass murder "committed" by Green Berets. He has a really big, smart mouth.

Debbie Miller
Made in the USA by Billie Letts

4
Tracking two homeless siblings and the choices they make show how important it is to always stay on the good. Consequences of their actions will decide the route their lives will take.

Jean L
Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten

5
A really good read. Inspector Huss is a member of a really good team trying to solve a suicide/murder? She is a very sympathetic character with a grueling job, a very good husband, and 13-year-old twin daughters.

Julie H.
Trail of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz

5
Document #5 in the Spellman series was a very fun read. While not everything went in the way I expected (or hoped) it would, how can I say that anything has ever followed a linear line in these books? Between the usual, interesting plot lines (cases), we get the unusual too. There's a new employee at Spellman Investigations, a possible Ex-boyfriend #13, an open-ended visit by Grammy Spellman, and siblings at odds. For once, Izzy doesn't seem like the strangest one in this lot of characters and almost seems like she could take control of her future. Lutz has had me hooked since the first book and I will continue to follow any and all Spellman sagas.

Julie H.
Cinnamon Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke and H. L. Swenson

3
A strong outing for Hannah Swenson and her family and friends in Lake Eden, MN. When a multi-car pileup turns into the murder of a member of the jazz group to play a the Lake Eden Inn, Hannah's on scene right away. Just to make things interesting, Hannah also has more issues with her love triangle, but in this novel, some things become more resolved. You would think she's finally made some sort of decision in this disconcerting love triangle, but you never know.

nancy ross
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson

4
I just started this book. It continues "The Girl Who Played With Fire." It has started out right where the other ended with no fillers. So far so good.

Krismar Ramker
The Distant Hours by Kate Morton

5
If you liked Morton's other books, you will love this one! Her setting details and character development are always stellar!

Anne Derkat
The Horus Road by Pauline Gedge

4
Its a story of the Egyptians, at the end of the Twelfth Dynasty and their fight to free their country from invaders.

Sheila M
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

2
Wooden characters and predictable. Hannah goes through the motions of writing but needs to go deeper with her characters. I did like the repeating theme from mother to daughter with Jude and her mother. That was nicely done by Hannah. Overall, it was not a book that grabbed me however, two other girls in my book club loved, loved, loved this book. And, a third member of our book club read a couple of chapters but did not finish the book. This book was free for me to read from a readinggroupguides.com contest. I appreciated the opportunity!

Sheila M
Why Read Moby Dick by Nathaniel Philbrick

5
Philbrick is a phenomenal writer. Why Read Moby Dick is an insightful look at Melville, the author of Moby Dick and the history of the event that precipitated Melville to write Moby Dick. I loved it!

Lee Mitchell
The Shadows in the Street by Susan Hill

4
5th book in a great series. You don't have to read previous ones, they do stand alone, but why not start with the first "The Various Haunts of Men."

Rebecca Chome
Defending Jacob by William Landay

4
I enjoyed this book very much...lots of twists and turns as I put myself into the position of a detective looking at the case against Jacob.

Clifton Wade
New York to Dallas by J. D. Robb

5
This book is the latest in her death series. I wish she had labeled this as she has all other books in this series. I love her books - they are set in the future -- 2057 - and it tells how Cop Eve Dallas gets the killer(s). It has a lot of items that we do not have at this time - etc - elevators that go sideways and up and down.

Emily Hicks
The Healing by Jonathan Odell

4
The story is compelling, comic, tragic all in one. Odell is a great writer. I would read more of his books.

kelley blair
One Perfect Word by Debbie Macomber

5
Great book inspires you in every way. The concept of picking one word a year and studying the word from every avenue.

Sheila M
Believing The Lie by Elizabeth George

4
Elizabeth George just gets better and better as a writer. This book was good but the mystery was a little weak which I can forgive when the writing is top notch. And the ending! I will be waiting anxiously for the next book which should have a lot more Havers in it (and hopefully less Deborah).

Margaret Hoffman
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5
I know that this series has been out for awhile but I picked up the first book and could not put it down. And incredible premise and amazingly creative!!!!!!

Cheryle Fisher
Wanton West by Lael Morgan

4
A non-fiction book relating the history of prostitution and the women who plied this trade in the early western United States. An interesting subject and how this occupation was sometimes the only job that paid enough for women to sustain themselves or their families.

Karen Catignani
Gun Games by Faye Kellerman

4
I have enjoyed reading this series. This book concentrated on the life of a teen aged boy living with the Deckers.

Karen Stigers
Second Nature by Jacquelyn Mitchard

4
This is a really good read which has some surprising turns. Starts out with a terrible tragedy & ends with an unusual ending. A love story with a twist & a lot of medical jargon etc thrown in.

Dorothy Gordon
The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz

4
Told from the point of view of the oldest daughter of a family of private detectives this is a humorous and entertaining read.

Dianne
The Crown by Nancy Bilyeau

4
The search for an historic crown with powers of live and death is off and running in the England of Henry VIII. History, mystery and a strong female heroine. What more could you ask for.

Ann Hill
The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen

4
Several people who knew each other as teenagers, come back to their quiet Southern hometown and find they have all changed. It is an interesting look into how lives unfold and how past experiences still influence behavior.

PATRICIA FLANIGIN
A Light on the Veranda by Ciji Ware

5
Compelling read. Ware has woven history in with a contemporary story. Once a again in the deep south, Natchez, Mississippi is the setting, bringing together two very different eras. I would suggest that you read MIDNIGHT ON JULIA STREET first so that you understand the Duvallon family and their past relationships. Both of these stories will keep you reading late into the night.

Michelle Ruben
Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James

4
Hooked from the first few pages...a must-read!

Linda Frashure
Lie Down in Darkness by William Styron

5
Our book club reads classics every now and then. This is a must read in my opinion.

Eileen Dandashi
Castle of Wizardry by David Eddings

5
I'm reading this by audio book and have read the previous 3 books. It's a series of 5 books in a fantasy setting about the struggle of the gods who are good versus the one who is not. I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to this series although it isn't my usual genre. The characters in the series have well-defined personalities and you are always asking the question, what happens next. This is one series very worth the time reading.

Ann Burch
V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

5
Excellent, as all the others from A to V.

barbara semeraro
Hot Rain by Kat Martin

4
A former "special forces" officer has been working undercover for the ATF to catch a supposedly reputable businessman who is suspected of selling arms to foreign countries. An employee of the businessman and a young woman were killed in a mysterious explosion on one of the boats owned by the businessman. Because there is not enough evidence regarding the explosion, the police have reached a dead end in their investigation. The roommate of the girl that was killed decides to look around on one of the other boats to see if she if she could find anything to link the businessman to the the crimes. While she was searching, 3 men boarded the boat, making it impossible for her to leave unseen before it took off on it's mission and she is forced to become involved.

Gail White
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
This is a wildly different, colorful & captivating book! Great detailed descriptions of a dreamy imaginative world! Masterfully & beautifully written and almost impossible to put down! It is a wild ride unlike anything I have ever read!

Bobbie Davis
Defending Jacob by William Landay

4
Good story about a teen accused of murdering a classmate. The father is a DA but is relieved of duty because of a conflict of interest.

Bobbie Davis
Oxford Messed Up by Andrea Kayne Kaufman

5
Really liked this story about an American woman with OCD who goes to Oxford and shares the "loo" between their rooms with an English man who is a slob and can spend days in the same clothes. They are also connected by Van Morrison music. Some of it is funny and some sad. Very strongly written characters!

Angela Satalino
Sizzling Sixteen by Janet Evanovich

4
Stephanie Plum and her gang are at it again, this time on the hunt for cousin Vinnie. Janet Evanovich doesn't disappoint for the 16th time. It's no mystery that Stephanie is going to get her guy, but the adventure is in getting there. Once again, I had a laugh-out-loud moment on the train ride home. You just can't resist.

Janet Nydegger
Long Drive Home by Will Allison

4
It might be a 5 Star rating but I have not finished it yet. It is a powerful story and short enough you can read it over the weekend.

Mary Bryant
An Available Man by Hilma Wolitzer

4
Light but fun reading and an unexpected ending. I enjoyed his dating dilemmas after he became a widower.

ana vega
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

5
Best book the series. It is compelling just like the first book and leaves you looking forward for the next one. I love the complex characters the book displays as well as the plot it surely not your typical story.

stephanie polonyfis
Restoration by Olaf Olafsson

4
This book is set in Italy in the 1940's. War is beginning to effect the people of a small villa in Tuscany. A young woman has an affair with an art dealer and must struggle to survive her decisions. German and allied forces troops are closing in on this villa and the people that inhabit it. It is a very good historical fiction novel that is based on a lesser known area, during the war.

rita powell
Mystery by Jonathan Kellerman

4
I have read some of the Alex Delaware novels before and I always like them. This one is particularly interesting and I'm only 90 pages into it.

Elaine Williams
Georgia Bottoms by Mark Childress

5
If you liked Mark Childress's Crazy in Alabama, you'll probably like Georgia Bottoms. Georgia is a Southern woman who entertains various high-ranking gentlemen from her town in her garage apartment, in back of the home she shares with her mama and alcoholic brother. Georgia's family name was Butts, but her mother legally changed the name to Bottoms because it sounded nicer. Georgia has a secret past simmering in the background that surely cannot stay hid forever. There's humor, suspense and heart-tugging truth to be had here.

Sylvia Caplow
The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund De Waal

5
Art, history, and mystery make a wonderful read. This is a true story with clear character portrayals and a peek into the lives of the very wealthy.

Helen W
The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

5
An unusual and completely stunning historical. It moves back and forth in time from the early 1700's and present day. I am totally impressed with the factual history and the tie in's to present day Scotland. For Jacobite lovers and all lovers of great writing. What a winner!

Elaine Baxter
The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler

4
Since the Trilogy Series by Stieg Larsson debuted, our book club's interest in Scandinavian authors has bloomed. Lars Kepler does a great job. You start to read and you cannot put the book down until you reach the very last page, and then you wish you could start over. His cast of characters are so deeply detailed you feel you know them personally.

Jan Hummel
The Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans

5
This book has every thing and I really enjoyed it. Suspense, humor, romance and full descriptions of places and people. It also had a happy ending, my favorite.

Lynn Marler
You Are Not so Smart by David McRaney

4
A highly interesting, thought-provoking, eye-opening read.

fran
The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum

4
I found this book a little slow to start, but once I got into it I wound up enjoying it. It took me a while to like the main character, but the author had a way of pulling you into her life. Her relationships with her family members, her history of significant loss and emotional armor, ultimately made her an endearing character. I love how the author introduced her in layers...interesting perspective. Ultimately, a fun read.

Sandy McCullough
Second Glance by Jodi Picoult

5
Ghosts and ghost hunters collide in this compelling tale of the paranormal set in Vermont's green mountains. When the patriarch of the Abenaki Indian tribe that was nearly eradicated by that state's eugenics project in the 1930s encounters Ross Wakeman, the miraculous survivor of several attempted suicides who wants nothing more than to be reunited with the woman he loved and lost, they set in motion a chain of events that will unravel an ancient murder and lead to a second chance at life and love for the victim's descendants. Picoult, author of Salem Falls, brings the past alive and peoples it with a cast of extraordinarily well-realized characters whose reach into the future touches the lives of a dying boy, a frightened girl, and their mothers--two women who've given up on love until the remnants stirred up by a plan to develop an ancient burial ground show them what they're missing. Second Glance is an intricate and suspenseful ghost story that enchants and illuminates all the way to its powerful conclusion. I love this author and hope she writes many more novels.

Kellie
Believing the Lie by Elizabeth George

3
I was very excited about reading this. This is one of my favorite series. This one takes place in a part of England called Cumbria, The Lake District. Lynley is asked by the commissioner to do a favor and go to Cumbria and investigate a death. A man falls while climbing out of a boat. The death is ruled accidental but the Uncle of the man asks the commissioner to send someone to make sure. Lynley, has to be very discrete about the investigation. He asks St. James and Debra to help him and later on Havers. But he doesn’t share anything with Isabelle. The story is as intricate and dramatic as the series is known for. This one, for some reason, seemed to be a little bit slow for me. Maybe after 17 books, I’m getting a little weary of the series. It seemed to take a long time to tell the story and it dragged at times. I love Havers. She is my ultimate favorite and she did play a part in this story. Based on the end of this book, I think the next one is going to focus on Havers. One good thing about this is the relationship between Isabelle and Tommy. The last 100 pages of this book are the best part. It is fast paced and full of action. I wish the other 500 were like it. Not one of my favorites, but still a good one.

Sherrill Boggs
Imperial Woman by Pearl S. Buck

5
My book club decided to read this last month after looking at selections read by other book clubs. This was a book about a very strong Chinese concubine who became the ruler of china. She was very beautiful and cunning and won the emperor's heart right away. She had a son who she raised to be ruler also but she actually ruled during one of China's worst times in history. People either loved her or hated her. I was surprised that I really liked the book.

Maria Bongiovanni
Moloka'i by Alan Brennert

4
This book takes place in Hawaii in 1891. When people start to get leprosy they are sent to a different island to live, away from their family, home, friends they have known. This happens to a 7-year-old girl, afraid at such a young age not knowing why and living with people she doesn't know and how she copes for many years. This was a great book. I would recommend this book highly.

Ivy Pittman
The Redeemer by Jo Nesbo

4
Perhaps I should have started with Nesbo's first novel. Still I couldn't put the mystery down, even as I tried to keep track of the whose who running through the dead of winter, murder and fear on their trails. Just started Nemisis with anticipation.

Cindy Kness
The Midwife of Venice by Roberta Rich

5
Excellent story! A Jewish midwife living in a sequestered part of Venice is asked to help deliver a prominent family's child who is having a most difficult labor. In doing so, she goes against her own family's rules and those involving her Jewish culture.

Frankie Edenzon
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
Defending Jacob is definitely a page turner. Do not start this book if you have something that needs to be done because once you start it you will not want to put it down. There are many twists throughout the novel and Landay keeps surprising the reader until the very end. In addition, Landay makes us think about what "family" truly means and about what we may or may not know about those that we are closest to .

Judy Sheriff
Trail of the Spellmans: Document #5 by Lisa Lutz

4
Another zany adventure.

Marsha
Death in a Strange Country by Donna Leon

4
This Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery takes us into dealings with the U. S. Army post in Vincenza, as well as, politics and undermining police matters in Venice. No one writes as openly about Venetian police matters and political influence than Leon. Her characters are exquisitely drawn. They are all a pleasure. Once you have read one you will search out others.

Lynn Demsky
Fine-Feathered Death by Linda O. Johnston

4
Quick, fast enjoyable read but Kendra's getting too involved with legal cases --- I prefer when she's pet-sitting! Missed all the inter-action she used to have with a lot of her pet sitter's owners and her friend where she leaves her dog when she's going out! But still entertaining!

Terri Sieg
Third Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones

4
If you like paranormal books you will love this one.

Betty Jo Harris
Grown up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson

2
This is the 3rd book I have read by Jackson and it was not my personal favorite. I just could not connect with the characters as much as in Between Georgia especially. She is fun to read and don't let my comments stop you.

Betty Jo Harris
A Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve

2
I really like Anita Shreve but I listened to the audio of this one and maybe it was more of a reader issue but I just did not care much for the characters. The setting is in Africa which is very interesting but the Doctor and his wife were just not that deep.

Dennis Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

4
An intriguing tale.

John Keenan
Shelter by Harlan Coblen

1
Colben is an author I read regularly but in this YA book he has descended to the level of a 13-year-old writing for teenagers...the dialogue is terrible...full of cliches...the characterization is riddled with self deprecating 'cute' remarks that quickly pall as a reader hook...the worst is the totally unbelievable plot twists which have as many holes as a large hole colander...there are so many I don't know where to start...but when the large girl Ema is held tightly by the villain , Buddy, with a knife to her throat...Buddy suddenly disappears as a consequence... as Harlan would have us believe...of Spooner driving a van at him and scooping him up on the bonnet. Can you imagine how this would work, leaving Ema unmarked and in good humour...or humor? No neither can I. And when Lizzy was in Auschwitz and Dad escapes with 18 others by overpowering the guards she tell us that he then sneaked back into the now on full alert camp and escaped again with his daughter...presumably wearing his magic invisibility cloak...and lastly the final staggering expose when in the final sentence the ambulance driver who takes off with his dying father is revealed to be the Butcher of Auschwitz... a man who was supposed to be killed in 1945 and if still alive must be over a hundred years old...is working convincingly as an ambulance driver and still apparently keen on operating in his dotage as an active and psychotic killer...it must have been something the Nazis put in the water...and so and so on...COME ON HARLAN...impressive plotting this is not...get a grip and don't even think about a series until you can write 'action' convincingly...a very disappointed reader.

Martha Brown
The Healing by Jonathan Odell

5
Well-researched and well-written, this story immerses the reader in the culture of slavery. The slaves struggled to survive physically and emotionally. The character of Polly Shine whom the plantation owner buys as a healer for his slaves should become an icon in American literature representing the wisdom and leadership that emerged among these fettered populations. The southern culture in which some of us grew up was built on the backs of these enslaved people who had their freedom, their lives, their children taken from them. Odell writes a moving and gripping story with unforgettable characters and beautiful language. A story told with heart.

Julie
A Duty to the Dead by Charles Todd

I love atmospheric, historical mysteries. This novel fits that bill for me. It takes place during the World War I. It incorporates a family secret and a few murders that war nurse Bess Crawford must sort out. I'm really enjoying it.

Dawn M. Thayer
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5
Was intrigued by this trilogy upon viewing the movie trailer and I love the book! Am now beginning the second in the series.

Kathy Iwasaka
The Hunter by John T. Lescroart

5
Again I get to visit with some of my old friends from the Hunt Club, this time as they search for answers to some more personal questions. I love how the clues lead logically from place to place without too many wild leaps, and I enjoy Lescroart's brisk, crisp writing style that keeps me turning pages long after I should be sound asleep.

Frances Drukten
Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver

5
Loved it! Could not put it down. I'm beginning to wonder about my penchant for "dystopian trilogies" but can't wait for the third book in this one regardless. Having taught seventh grade language arts for 30 years I am more convinced than ever that some of the authors writing for young adults today deserve a huge crossover following. I'm there!

Lynn W
The House I Loved by Tatiana de Rosnay

3
A couple of months ago I read about Napoleon III's and Baron Haussmann's modernization of Paris in McCullogh's "Americans in Paris." This gentle book is about the people and their doomed property that stood in the paths of the new grand boulevards. This book is better than "A Secret Kept", but not as good as "Sarah's Key."

Edie C
Mudwoman by Joyce Carol Oates

4
As usual, Oates writes a dark story about a woman who achieves her goal as the first woman president of a college but because of her strange past she finds herself not able to cope with all that is going on around her.

Kathy Vallee
Third Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones

5
WOW!!!!!!!!!! This is the third novel in this series and I just could not put it down it was fantastic! Charley Davidson as the Grim Reaper runs into the son of Satan the most beautiful man on earth and one she is in love with but because she bound him to his earthly body he can not help her get out of trouble and the BIG war is coming. This book is funny and terrifying at the same time I love this series.

Reva Wamsley
Brunswick Gardens by Anne Perry

4
I usually don't figure out who did it in advance but on this one I did about half way through the book. But I wanted to keep reading to see if I was right but also because it's a very entertaining book. Thomas Pitt is trying to discover who pushed a woman down the stairs. The possible suspects are the Reverend, who is the head of the house, his son or the curate who lives with them & happens to be Charlotte's brother-in-law, the husband of her sister who was murdered years ago.

Anne Berger
The Winter Rose by Jennifer Donnelly

Nanette McCall
Time and Again by Jack Finney

4
A friend recommended this book to me a long time ago and I'm finally getting around to it (after I found it on Amazon along with its sequel). Very interesting story involving time travel. Imagine if we could go anywhere we wanted to in time!?

Sue Beckwith
Strong at the Broken Places by Richard M. Cohen

4
Richard Cohen, husband of Meredith Veira, spent a year interviewing five people with chronic illnesses. This is a compilation of their moving stories.

Linda Harrison
The Shadow Patrol by Alex Berenson

5
In reading this book, you learn a lot about what is happening in Afghanistan that is not reported in the news. For instance, the ease of obtaining drugs, namely heroin in the poppy-growing region. I love to read Alex Berenson's books because a lot of fact is interwoven with the fiction making it a difficult book to put down once you have started reading.

Sue Beckwith
When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin

4
This is the selection for the April meeting of my book club and my first foray into the genre of Christian fiction. It was a compelling read over the last couple of days, a mesmerizing story of healing broken hearts with both physical and emotional breaks.

Sue Beckwith
Pearl of China by Anchee Min

4
This is a fictionalized account of part of the life of Pearl S. Buck as she grew up with a Chinese best friend, Willow. The story was beautiful, and the history informational.

Linda Harrison
The Rope by Nevada Barr

4
In The Rope, Nevada Barr tells the story of how her character Anna Pigeon becomes involved with the National Park Service and decides that her ultimate goal would be that of a park ranger. A well-written book that gives you a lot of information about the Glen Canyon Recreational Area and Anna's first encounter with pure evil.

Linda Harrison
The Dog Who Danced by Susan Wilson

4
I received this book from Good Reads and totally enjoyed it. The book was written in first person by the dog’s original owner Justine, the dog named Mack, and a man named Ed. Mack understood the directions given by Justine but didn't understand why she didn't come for him when he was lost. He didn't understand why Ed and his wife Alice distanced themselves from each other but Mack helped bring them closer as they played with him. This is one of the most heartwarming books I’ve read in a long time.

Linda Harrison
Bent Road by Lori Roy

3
Bent Road is about a family leaving a big city and moving to a rural area to get away from the big city crime. Although the farm is Arthur's old home, it turns his wife Celia into a recluse. This book shows how Celia deals with the loneliness and how she helps Arthur's sister Ruth overcome her obstacles.

Linda Harrison
The Girl Who Disappeared Twice by Andrea Kane

4
Although this book started out slow, it picked up and kept you reading till the twist at the end. When a child is abducted from school, the mother doesn’t think authorities are working too hard to find her child and calls in Forensic Instincts for help. Although this group doesn’t always work by the book, it gets results.

Linda Harrison
Whispers by Lisa Jackson

5
If you want to read a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, just pick up one by Lisa Jackson. They are always suspenseful and well written. In a small Oregon town, there are two ruling families—the Hollands and the Taggerts. Years ago, a Taggert son was found floating lifeless in the lake and a Holland daughter believed she killed him, thinking him to be his evil brother. But the drowning was ruled an accident. Now the truth is finally going to come out.

Linda Harrison
Private #1 Suspect by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro

5
You can't go wrong reading a book by James Patterson. The books co-authored by Maxine Paetro are centered around an investigative firm named Private. In this book, there are several murder cases that Private is working on.

Julie Bockstiegel
11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
I never read Stephen King before, as I am not much for scary stories. However, after so many good reviews of this book and a different slant from King, I decided to try it. I am listening to the audio of this book and enjoying it immensely. I want to know what will happen, but don't want it to be over, either. I enjoy the look back in time and think King does a good job of recreating it. I heartily recommend this book.

Irene Yeates
Children of Wrath by Paul Grossman

5
Berlin's most competent Jewish detective Willi Kraus returns in a bone-chilling thriller set amid the political morass prior to WWII. What horrors he ultimately exposes during a case that has all of Berlin's parents guarding their children is not only shocking, but also psychologically appalling. Beware, this book is not for the faint of heart.

Donna
The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice

5
Anne Rice is back in top form with yet another saga - this time she deals with, and adds her own stamp to, the werewolf legends. At times both thrilling and sensual, Rice delves into theological and metaphysical issues while keeping the pace moving at breakneck speed. Can't wait for the next one.

Marjorie Clark
UR by Stephen King

3
True Stephen King.

Michael McAdam
The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff

4
Fascinating (well mostly) book about polygamy with dual storylines - one set in Brigham Young's time and one set in modern times. A few chapters are overly long and ramble but for the most part it is riveting!

Jamie Walsh
Long Drive Home by Will Allison

4
Excellent fast read, kept me going since page one.

Marsha
A Noble Radiance by Donna Leon

4
Although Ventian politics is rife with corruption and intrigue, Commissario Guido Brunetti continues to unlock mysteries concerning the most aristocratic families. This one involves a human corpse dug up when a field is plowed and a valuable ring belonging to one of Venice's oldest families if found beside the grave. The title is most intriguing and is only revealed at the end of the book.

Donna K
The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

5
This is one of those books you can't put down. There is not a boring page in the whole book. A white girl raised by blacks in the Kitchen House - you can only imagine the family, the friendship, the love and the pain that this relationship yields.

Crystal Blackburn
A Sleeping Life by Ruth Rendell

5
Although published in1978, the story is still holds up. And I didn't guess the ending!

Judy O.
The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

4
This is an adult fairy tale about a young girl who suddenly appears to a middle-aged couple on a homestead in Alaska. She seems to be "born" from the snow-girl that they built in the yard. This is a very different genre for me, but I did enjoy it.

Marsha
A Sea of Troubles by Donna Leon

4
Commissario Brunetti is called upon to investigate two murders on the island of Pellestrina, south of the Lido on the Venetian lagoon. Signorina Elettra, from his office, volunteers to visit her relatives in this tight-lipped community to help search for clues. Her romance leads to peril in a deadly storm that causes much devastation.

Sharon Elliott-Fox
Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

4
Memoir/novel of Walls' grandmother -- a spunky, outspoken, rough and ready lady of the West. Grandmother Lily was born in the horse and buggy era, helped her father break horses, became a teacher (initially with an 8th grade education), learned to drive a car and fly an airplane. Always up for adventure, fearless and overcoming obstacles and set-backs with grace and determination, Lily was a woman ahead of her time.

laurie henderson
The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne and D. K. Swan

4
I had seen the movie Journey 2, based on Jules Verne book The Mysterious Island. And I realized I hadn't read it yet! I really enjoy Verne's books, especially 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This book is good, nothing like the movie! LOL! I am halfway though it and eager to see what happens next to these poor stranded patriots!

Denise Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

4
Good story...left a an impact on my thoughts.

Anne Marie Koschnick
Wind Spirit by David Thurlo and Aimee Thurlo

4
One of a series of mystery novels, it combines both mystery and philosophy as Navaho officer Ella Clah tries to balance tradition and modernism in doing her job on the Rez. Traditional Navaho beliefs can be very difficult to adhere to, especially when working in a modern job.

Patricia DiLonardo
The Litigators by John Grisham

4
I liked this book because it was fast reading. Also the different story lines made it interesting. I have no idea how this kind of litigation works so it was interesting to me. I loved the fact that one lawyer was able to be charitable to a simple family

Brandy
Come Home by Lisa Scottoline

3
The book was okay. It held my interest throughout but I had a hard time believing the main character. Overall it seemed very far fetched to me. I however am not a mom so I wonder if being a mom might change one's perspective.

Linda Johnson
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt

3
Strangely weird book. How weird? There's an intermission about halfway through the book in which another story is told for 2 or 3 pages. Just before the end of the book, there is another intermission which appears to be more of the first intermission story. This is basically a travelogue of two brothers Charlie and Eli Sisters as they track a man their boss wants eliminated. It was fascinating to observe the differences between the brothers and the changes in their relationship.

Linda Johnson
Albert Nobbs by George Moore

4
Learned about this story due to the movie starring Glenn Close. Albert Nobbs is a long time member of the wait staff of a hotel who has kept a secret from the hotel employer and all who come in contact with Albert for years. The secret is accidentally discovered one night when Albert is forced to share a bed with another worker. The sharing of the secret opens up possibilities that Albert had never thought about.

Linda Campbell
Celebrity in Death by J. D. Robb

5
I love all of the Robb series of books. I am not good at guessing the ending and that is what I like in a mystery.

Mary Ann Haske
The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

4
There are a few chapters about one character and then one bounces over to a few chapters about the other chief character. Once one gets used to this and begins to make connections, the book takes off. Both characters are very fascinating and seem to have a secret inner life which sometimes is inadvertently revealed. I'm anxious to finish and see how these inner lives are reconciled with their exterior lives.

Laura Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

5
A book that I sank my teeth into.

Wendy Catalano
The Ninth Step by Barbara Taylor Sissel

4
The Ninth Step is a realistic, engrossing and thought provoking novel about love, loss and forgiveness. The story is based on the Ninth Step of AA's 12 Step Program. It is to make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Lorna
Liberating Paris by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason

1
Boring, Boring, Boring. Only read as much as I did for my book club.

Elaine Beierbach

Stay Close by Harlan Coben

5
OMG! I stayed up all night to finish this book! Awesome!

Joan B.
The Gilly Salt Sisters by Tiffany Baker

5
The story takes place in a small town in Cape Cod. It is the story of two sisters who are very different, yet were raised in the same way. A small town, gossip, family secrets, and two battling families through the generations will have you turning the pages. Touched with a sprinkling of whimsy and strong female characters, this book has it all. Ms Baker's first book The Little Giant of Aberdeen County was also a great read.

CAROL Neill
Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

4
"Best described as being a story with the intricate fragility of a snowflake and the natural honesty of the dirt beneath your feet." Thoroughly enjoyed every page of it.

Michelle Archer
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
A terrific legal thriller! The narrator is a lawyer and the father of a son accused of murder. I enjoyed reading the story from the point of view of the family of the accused but that was nothing compared to some of the other twists to this story. The writing was spot on, especially those passages related to family relationships.

Jeanette Crossett
A Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux

5
I would rate this book a five, but I would gave it higher ratings. My all time favorite book to reread and go back too. About a gal name Douglas who meets a Elizabethan guy name Nicholas in a church in England. How they fall in love, Douglas teaches Nicholas the customs of our day, how she trys to clear his name when she goes back in his time. Learn history in this as well. It takes my breath away. Douglas learns how to depend on herself. A must read for ever gal.

Gale Max
Stiltsville by Susanna Daniel

Great read. Felt like I was in sunny Florida. Probably because it was 85 degrees in my own Chicago backyard!!

Marsha

As the winter waters of Venice rise, Commissario Guido Brunetti learns an old friend has been savagely beaten. During his investigation works of art are found to be stolen and sold to collectors.

5
A glimpse into the life of the Scottish Fold cat, Maru, who has become an internet sensation thanks to the videos posted by his owner.

Francisca E B
Persuasion by Jane Austen

3
Not her very best work, but still a good book exploring the role of women and how they were captives of their class and social standing.

Tessa B
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

4
See is a great writer and the beginning of this book is compelling and fascinating. But the cliffhanger ending irritates me. I hate being set up for a sequel. Still the story is comeplling enough to get it 4 stars.

Kathleen Doyle
Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

5
This book was loved by our whole Book Group, which is very unusal! We live in Massachusetts and all of us have visited Martha's Vineyard and Cambridge, which are the settings for the story. We were fasinated by the historical information about the Indian Tribe and everyday life back in the 1600's. The main characters were very well researched and well written. A very good book.

Ann Thaxton
Little Girl Gone by Drusilla Campbell

5
Madora is a 17-year-old girl who thinks she knows what she wants. After meeting Willis and running away with him, Willis kidnaps a pregnant Linda and keeps her in a trailer behind the house. Soon, Madora is wondering why she is there and why she is staying. Madora is torn between her love for him and what is right. Then comes along Foo the dog and Djano who leads her back to herself. Great book, I really enjoyed it and want to thank ReadingGroupGuides.com for the free copy.

Janice Baly
In the Garden of the Beasts by Erik Larson

5
This is the fascinating account of the US ambassador to Berlin and his family in the 1930's as Hitler becomes increasingly powerful. Larson has written a non-fiction book that reads like a novel.

Colin Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

4
Well written story.

Yvonne Richardson
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

5
I absolutely loved this book. It moved fast and kept me on the edge of my seat. Our book club meets at my house in June and that is my book of choice. Loved the ending!!!!!!!!

Anita Nowak
The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larrson

5
This was the 3rd and final book in Mr. Larrson's trilogy, beginning with the Girl With the Dragon Tatoo. As with the past 2 books, I loved this one. It is long and I took my time reading it, because I didn't want it to end. It does refer back to the other novels, which I found helpful, since it's been a few years since I read the first 2. It does continue with the life of Salander, who is a most unforgettable main character in all the novels. Unfortunately, Mr. Larrson passed away before he could continue this series. It is a real shame because I feel he was a wonderful writer. I advise those who are interested to read the books in order, since there could be some confusion if you start with this one. You won't be disappointed.

mary sue skelton
Memory by Philippe Grimbert

5
An absolute small gem that is a keeper for anyone's personal library. It is translated from the French (pub. 2004) and is only154 pages. The author is a psychoanalyst and presents a masterful compliation of what results with hidden memories. The setting is WWll and involves wonderful descriptions of the intricacies of a very unusual family. Unforgettable!

Tessa B
Muffins and Mayhem by Suzanne Beecher

3
Inspirational and honest, but not great writing. This is like a collection of her daily columns, which are great as a 3-minute daily read. Reading them all at once in a book doesn't work as well. Better to read it a chapter a week or so.

Enid Grabiner
The Bookseller's Sonnets by Andi L. Rosenthal

5
This was a fabulous read! In a blending of settings from the 1500's and the present, Jill Levin, a Jewish Museum curator, examines an anonymously donated book attributed to the daughter of Sir Thomas More, advisor to Henry the V111. Is it authentic and why was it sent to her? As she tries to document it further she finds modern day issues have not changed much from the past.

Marsha
Death at Fenice by Donna Leon

4
Commissario Guido Brunetti is called upon to solve the death of the famous conductor who died painfully from cyanide poisoning during an intermission at La Fenice, the opera house of Venice. His methods are fascinating as he digs for clues from the people who knew the conductor.

Phyllis Warren

Denise Beierbach

Alys, Always by Harriet Lane

5
Catches your attention from first scene.

Marjorie Sucansky
A Trick of Light by Louise Penny

5
I have read the previous six Inspector Gamach novels, and though the first was a little slow, they have captured my interest as they have progressed. The characters are funny, lovable, and admirable. The Inspector is a wise, kind man who treats everyone he meets with dignity. It is a little strange that so many murders occur in the little town of Three Pines (one of the characters refers to this as a "cottage industry" of sorts), but the willing suspension of disbelief allows one to enjoy the interaction of the people of the town with the Inspector and his team.

Rachelle Strachar
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

4
I am so enjoying this book! It is written through the voice of Enzo the dog. A loving dog who faithfully follows his master through meeting his future wife, marriage and turbulence that follows. You will find yourself sharing both the up and downs of this beautifully written book. If there ever was a doubt, whether a dog was truly man's best friend - you will never doubt it again after reading this book. The book is refreshingly different and helps the reader to remember to be strong and fight for what they believe in.

Donna K
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

5
I'm reading this book as part of the Pioneer Library System Big Read. It's such a great book any way but when the library does a Big Read it just can't be beat. What a great book for the whole community to be reading.

Lori
Death at Pemberley by P.D. James

2
I was very disappointed in this book. It added nothing to the Pride & Prejudice story, and it was one of the most boring mysteries I've ever read.

Kendra Hill
Betrayal by Danielle Steel

4
I'm a sucker for a good story. I like that I don't know who did what so far, leaving me wanting to read and not pay any attention to stuff around the house.

Rachelle Strachar
Looking For Alaska by John Green

5
An amazing read. Sixteen-year-old Miles Halter decides to make changes in his current life as a loser, living with his parents attending a public high school in Florida. He moves to Alabama to attend a prestigious boarding school previously attended by his father. How will Miles fare in comparison to his father legendary status?? This is a perfect read for anyone who felt like they didn't "fit in" in high school! What is even better is it is a great read for both boys and girls. That highlights being smart and helps you to appreciate each persons differences. A wonderful for the "young adult' genre and more. For me this books appeal to teenage boys fills a desperately needed gap. Wonderful writing that embraces a variety of emotions experienced throughout a year in high school that everyone can appreciate.

Janet Bailey
Paris in Love by Eloisa James

5
This book comes out in April. I was lucky enough to win an advance from the publisher. Paris in Love is a memoir. Author Eliosa James and her family - which includes a husband and two children ages 10 and 16 - go live in Paris for a year. The book gives you the inside view of doing this. Things such as being groceries, dealing with schools - and all the beauty of Paris. I love her writing style and personal stories. Some are just so funny. A very fun book to read.

Heather
Nowhere to Run by C.J. Box

3
This is part of the Joe Pickett series (game warden in Wyoming), which I only halfheartedly read. The mystery itself is pretty good but if I had to read one more sentence about Marybeth (Joe's wife), I thought I'd scream!

MOSHE PRIGAN
The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano

5
A funny, fascinating, stunning and deranged journey in Latin American literature, written by the deceased genius author Roberto Bolano.

Amy Nash
Wonder by R. J. Palacio

4
A great YA book that deals with birth defects when kids are at their most rotten age to one another...middle school. Dust jacket words...realistic and uplifting...are quite apt.

Jane Beeman
The Underside of Joy by Sere Prince Halverson

4
A great book about a step-mom who's husband dies in a freak accident in Bodega Bay, CA and is dealing with her 2 young step-children when the ex-wife comes into the picture after 3 years. A great family book with great characters.

carol H Monterosso
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

5
I never knew much about Ernest Hemingway except for the fact he killed himself. After reading this novel, you can see the hints of desperate determination to be published and, at all costs it seems, to his personal life with Hadley & their son. You can easily see why Hadley fell in love with him & stayed for as long as she could emotionally. Sometimes you wonder why men with several ex-wives stay emotionally attached to one. Could it be this woman is exactly what the man needs because she is his equal? Yet, Hemingway didn't want an equal. HE was IT.

Allison Gardner
The Assault by Harry Mulisch

Great story about World War II in Holland.

Elaine McIntosh
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

4
This was an intersting book of one mana's journey walkling across England to see a dying friend. More than a journey, this book shows the need for communication between people. Although the book was slow at furst, it captivated you as you read further.

Jean L
Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten

5
I loved the book. It is good to read about people of other countries and see how much in common that we all have. I give this book the max in stars and look forward to read more in this series. This is the first book of the series.

The Arrogant Years by Lucette Lagnado

5
Memoir of the author's mother growing up as an Eqyptian Jew before Nassar and then their life in the United States after Nassar came into power. Fascinating.

Becky Haase
Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

5
After hearing about this series, I went to the first book and loved it. Not quite a mystery, not quite a character study, but a bit of both. I enjoyed the way the back story was integrated into the wholeness of the book. I'm looking forward to reading more.

ann golobic
Restless in the Grave by Dana Stabenow

2
Just started the book.

Judy O.
The Healing by Jonathan Odell

4
Slavery was one of the cruelest practices in history. Odell has gives us an up-close look at the Satterfield plantation in Mississippi. We meet the family and more importantly many of the slaves who work and toil there. Polly Shine is the main character, and she is a slave for whom the master paid $5000 because she was a healer. Twelve-year-old Granada becomes her unwilling apprentice. The book is full of atmosphere and sense of place. I enjoyed it greatly.

jane gaulton
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
A father struggles to save his son who has been accused of murder. Well-written with a great surprise at the end

Joyce Delaney
Silent Joe by T. Jefferson Parker

4
This is one of the author's earlier books, and it's still worth reading (or re-reading). I don't know how he does it, but Parker consistently creates truly unique characters while also developing stories that engage me from start to finish. His latest books, the Charlie Hood series, are just a pleasure to read.

Laura Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

4
I definitely recommend his book for serious readers.

Stephanie
Saving Ceecee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman

5
What a delightful read!

Marjorie Carmony
A Dublin Student Doctor by Patrick Taylor

5
This is the sixth in this series of delightful stories about Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Rilly and Dr. Barry Laverty. The descriptions of the Irish, their country, and the medical experiences from 1930 to 1965 are wonderful. I do hope that there will be many more as we are left with some answered questions in this volume, and I am very curious.

Paula Barclay
Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten

4
This is an intriguing murder mystery that takes place in Sweden. There are many twist and turns to uncover a murder that at first was thought to be a suicide.

Mary Healey
Hotel On The Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford

5
This is the second reading for me and I am enjoying it again. The first time the story grabbed me. This time the words inspire me. "The crash is imminent. It is how you spend your time on the way down that counts." Hmmm !!!!

Marjorie Carmony
The Glass Devil by Helen Tursten

5
This is the fourth in Tursten's Det. Insp. Irene Huss series that has been translated from Swedish to English. I certainly do hope that the other six will soon be available, and in the order that they were written if possible. Each volume does stand alone, however. Tunsten's description of laws and customs, scenery, homes and clothing are excellent, in addition to the cases solved by Huss. I understand that there will be at least two additional volumes. Wonderful!!!

Renee Booker
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

5
It was a real life story to me about a mother who was so overbearing that when a tragic happen her life stop. She was in her own world did not care about Husband and other child when her twin daughter die. All she knew how to do is blame the world and one person who was driving Lexi. I recommend that you buy this novel and have your tissue close by.

Gail White
The Orchid House by Lucinda Riley

5
This is a wonderfully woven historical novel with depth & surprises. It is such a page turner and as so beautifully written you will not want to put it down. It begins in modern day and then when a diary is found the story changes to go back in time, unravelly a mystery which is surprising & yet welcoming. Set mostly in England in the World War II on an interesting exquisite estate and the way she describes it makes you long to go there. Her characters are so interesting they will stay with you. If you like historical fiction (which I usually haven't read until lately) this one is great!

Marjorie Carmony
Cinnamon Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke

This is the 'Lucky" thirteenth in the Hannah Swenson series. They are excellent mysteries, and for the cooks, the recipes from Hannah's business, The Cookie Jar, are mouthwatering. You may have gained a pound or two just in the reading.

The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott

5
Fiction based on some fact (sinking of the Titanic). A young seamstress with dreams of becoming a fashion designer sneaks her way on to the Titanic and was one of the lucky ones to make it into a lifeboat as the ship was sinking.

Sean P.
The Affinity Bridge by George Mann

2
The Affinity Bridge had all the potential in the world but when it was all said and done it didn’t amount to much. The world created by George Mann is an interesting one, his characters not so much. Each one was a cliché with little imagination and the mystery involved here left little doubt. Overall this book was a fine attempt but not worth the time.

Marie-Louise Molloy
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

4
Excellent plot!

Eh... I was just not feeling it for this book. I'm not even sure why I finished it. I felt it dragged and I just didn't care how it ended.

A can't-put-down book!

Jayne Blackledge
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Loved how the book took me into a family full of very interesting sub-stories. The book is long and I like that also. This will make a book discussion selection for the North Wales Area Library Book Club in May!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
This was not what I expected and a truly well-written wonderful book! I can't wait for the movie. I think men would like this book as much as women and my teenage daughter as well. I read it on audio and Jim Dale was awesome with his voice characterization. I recommend it to everyone!

Jenine Sjoblom
The Land of the Painted Caves by Jean Auel

2
Even though I knew the ratings were generally bad for this book I felt compelled to read it since I had read almost the whole series and needed some closure. I now understand the criticism towards this book. This book was truly a lot of pages of nothingness, when it could have been so much better and had so much more potential. As many have said already, there was really no plot, characters acted out of character especially Jondalar. There was excessive repetition, since most who would read this book have read previous books it should have assumed we knew a lot of the information already. The book just leaves you feeling empty, I found myself skimming a lot which I didnt do much with the other books. I'm just glad I borrowed the book from the library instead of paying the full price in a bookstore. I gave it two stars more out of loyalty to the series although one star was probably more accurate.

Catherine Myers
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

5
A nonfiction that reads like a fiction, whats better. The book is disturbing but fascinating. The research into the building of the 1893 Worlds Fair is amazing.

Elaine Perez

5
Could not put it down. As usual a Jack Reacher story that takes you from begining to end on a fast track.

Bobbie Davis

Mrs JaneAnn Clear

If you have read KH before you know to expect the best but if not you must read this heart wrenching story of a mothers love and lost and how everyone comes out of it. Have a box of tissues close.

Bobbie Davis
Betrayal by Danielle Steel

1
Not one of her better books. About a female movie producer and the people around her that "betrayed" her. She seems to just mass produce and not care about quality.

Marie Ledin
The Target by Catherine Coulter

5
Couldn't put the book down. Loved it!

Judith Reynolds
The Angel Makers by Jessica Gregson

5
If this book had not been based on a historical event, it would have been hard to believe. The fact that it is true made it all the more chilling. The book explores what happens to relationships when men go off to war and return to find their women forever changed. Our book group has selected this book, and the discussion promises to be as lively as the plot is deadly.

Nina Picone
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

5
Read Hunger Games last week and immediately moved on to Catching Fire. I am hooked on this trilogy. It's like driving past an accident. You don't want to look but you "have to" know what happened. As I turn each page I an afraid for Katniss and Peeta, but I have to know how it all turns out.

KG
Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese

4
This is the story of twin brothers born in Ethiopoia - the father is a surgeon and mother is a nun. It relates the story of the twin boys lives, when mother dies giving birth; and the various twists and turns their unusual lives take. There is very interesting medical information, and I learned about the Ethiopian culture and customs. This is a worthwhile read though at times I did find it to be a bit rambling.

KIG
Maine by Courtney Sullivan

3
This is a depressing story about a family that is most certainly very dysfunctional. Even so, I found I wanted to keep reading the book to see how events and relationships played out. The emphasis on the Irish upbringing , customs and background at times was a little overbearing. The ending also left me feeling a little perplexed.

KG
I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

3
I enjoy reading Sophie Kinsella's books, but I found this one to be rather silly and aimless, and a waste of time. I did want to finish the book though to see exactly how all the problems and relationships resolve themselves. If you are a Kinsella fan read this book; otherwise save your time for better reading material.

I love this Hannah Swenson series about the small town of Lake Eden, MN. I also love all the yummy recipes. Great series!

Kathy Iwasaka
The Hunter by John T. Lescroart

4
Finally finished this book. Loved the mystery, was not pleased with the romance. Just a personal opinion after following these characters for many years. See if you agree.

Eileen Quinn Knight,Ph.D.
American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin

5
By nature fiction is to assist us in re-creating ourselves! It is so much fun to read American Heiress as we are transported into the life of Cora Cash. Cora, as the main character, is whisked away from America to England to gain a title. She does so with much aplomb. Cora such a well-developed character, one feels totally engulfed by her spirit. It is a fun read and one that really re-creates.

Eileen Quinn Knight,Ph.D.
Catherine the Great by Robert K. Massie

5
Anyone who loves historical biography will love this new book by Robert K Massie. He is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and an excellent storyteller. The characters including her family friends enemies are so well described. It not only has historical accuracy but also depth and breath of understanding. The mastery of detail throughout the book is outstanding. Catherine the Great becomes alive in one's imagination.

Joyce Clark
The Snow Child by Eowen Ivey

Love this debut!!

Marialba Martinez
Fiddler and Fiora by Elizabeth Lowell

5
Even though the books were written sometime back in the 80s the themes are current. The use of the I pronoun throughout the books makes it more personal and in general, the books read well.

Jean Lesslie
The Help by Kathryn Stockett

5
I don't know why I waited so long to read this book. I'm probably the last person on earth to read it but I am so glad that I did. It is a wonderfully written book set in the civil rights era (1960s). I love the characters and it is a page turner. It is unlike the mystery thrillers that I read so many of but it is so good that you are compelled to keep reading to see what happens to them. I am so glad that I finally did read it.

Diane Stout
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

3
My daughter advised me to read this book - she could not put it down. I read it, and it was okay - I was ready to finish it so I could move on. As a nurse in the 70's at a County hospital, there were things that I could relate to that happened in this story. I was also surprised to learn that informed consents, did not come along until not that long ago. I work in a hospital where the IRB is very involved with All studies, and the IRB did not come along till that many years ago, also. It is not a book I would tell my friends they had to read.

Summer of the Midnight Sun by Tracie Peterson

5
Great book.

Pat Lewis
Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'Easter by Lisa Patton

4
A very light read (for after a book like Unbroken!). Southern lady and family follow husband to a dream of owning and running a B&B in Vermont. You can guess all the differences from Tennessee to Vermont and yes, each one of them takes place for LeeLee Satterfield, the heroine of the book. For the beach or a lazy Saturday this will have you laughing, crying and laughing again.

charlotte biggers
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

4
The year was 1937, a chance encounter between 2 young women and a wealthy young man take the reader of today to that time and era. It completely transports you to another time and place. The book has wit, wisdom and I loved the 1938 language. The book had the "voice" of Fitzgerald, very charming.

Francisca E B
Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

4
Audio book performed by Sandra Burr who handles the vast cast of characters very well. There are some, in particular, where her talent gives such pathos and feeling to a story it just about breaks my heart. Bravo.

Anna
11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
This is an excellent read! I hadn't read a King book in years. There are no demonic dogs or monsters (yet). He is such a good writer! Highly recommended. The descriptions of America in the fifties is great.

Elaine Beierbach

Debbie
The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks

4
Too much like his other works. However, it is fast reading and enjoyable.

Yvonne Jefferson
The Last Child by John Hart

5
The Last Child is one of the best mystery/crime novels that I've ever read or listened to and Scott Sowers' narration of the audio book (as well as Down River, and Iron House also by John Hart) was superb. What really made this book a winner for me was the believability of the human/family drama that is played out in it. I have been recommending it to everyone I know.

marion miller
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

3
A trip back to biblical times is the theme of this book. The author went to Masada and was completely fascinated with the subject and the survivors, especially the women of the era. The book was an interesting study of the times and the different roles of men and women. Polygamy enters in as well as mysticism. A fascinating study of an age not always written about.

Jan Hummel
Stiltsville by Susanna Daniel

5
This story was very engrossing and I enjoyed it a great deal. The relationships were very detailed and I really felt connected to the characters. The passage of time was easy for me to follow and kept me in the loop of their lives. Nicely done.

Pat S
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

5
Even though this has been out for a while, I just read it. OUTSTANDING. My husband's uncle was a POW in WW II and this brought home to me just what he endured to help keep our country safe. These men should be so honored and respected in every way. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE.

Pat S
We Never Lost Hope by Naomi Litvin

4
I have always been fascinated with the Holocause for some reason and appreciated this particular memoir. Unfortunately, it was a free Kindle download, and some of the book was missing (but not much I don't think). Very, very interesting read however. I can't imagine living through what they did!!

Lori
Long Drive Home by Will Allison

5
I thought the book was a real page-turner. It was thought-provoking, and I think it would be a good choice for book discussion groups. There could be good discussions about the moral dilemmas presented in the book as well as marital and parenting issues.

Judy Salisbury
Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult

2
I was disappointed overall in this book. As in many of her books, characterization of the principal characters is key. There is the dilemma: differing family opinions about when or if to let go of a comatose father. The dysfunctional family dynamics are interwoven both past and present. Unconventional is the information about wolf behavior interspersed throughout the tale. The ending was tied up with a bow and a twist which wasn't especially surprising.

Amarilis Martinez
Ascend by Amanda Hocking

4
This book is the 3rd in the Trylle Trilogy. It does not disappoint. Most authors fizzle out with the last book. Hocking isn't as lazy as some. *cough Twilight cough* Wendy has a level head and is a strong female to look up to. Quick read. A little choppy at times but over all awesome.

Mary Tyler
Heart and Soul by Maeve Binchy

5
I've read many of Maeve Binchy's books, and this is just as good if not better than the others. I love the way the characters are so realistic and the way they interact with one another.

Carol
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5
Loved this book - - and I didn't really expect to!

Irene Unger
After Annie by Michael Tucker

5
I literally could not put this book down Herbie is a gruff, cantankerous, sexy, middle-aged curmudgeon with a heart of gold. His human foibles made me love him more. Too bad it ended when it did because I wanted more!

Peggy Busch
Fall of Giants by Ken Follett

4
Follett has again risen to the top of historical fiction with this sweeping drama of World War II. The characters are very well drawn and the story is engaging.

Sharalynne Pasztor
2030 by Albert Brooks

3
At first I couldn't get into this book but then the city of Los Angeles is hit by a 9.0 earthquake and it got better. It's the year 2030, cancer has been cured and people are living longer than ever. The United States is in unbelievable debt. Some of the ideas in this book really make you stop and think "could this really happen?"

Susan
The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

4
Very good read - we read this as a selection for our book group

Linda McHugh
The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

Elzahraa Elbenni
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

5
Any novel by Agatha Christie is a great read. This novel has a diversity of suspects. a smart detective, and a twist. It's a book you don't want to miss out on.

Ann Hengst
The Shack by William P. Young

3
A man's daughter gets kidnapped while on a trip. Basically the story is about forgiveness. The lesson is that we need to forgive others so we can live our lives without the torment and hate that is in our hearts for them. It has humor in it too, I think. The main character meets Jesus and others who try and teach him how to forgive this person who killed his child.

ML Rosendale
Little Bee by Chris Cleave

4
This book was engrossing.

Sue Beckwith
Singing My Him Song by Malachy McCort

4
Malachy McCourt's 2nd memoir was better written and more contemporary than the 1st. This one dealt with his battle to obtain and maintain sobriety, his marriage, his family, and his career. An interesting read, especially the tie-ins with his brother, Frank, whose books I have also read. A nice Irish tale.

Sue Beckwith
A Monk Swimming by Malachy McCort

3
Fun read with all the Irish malapropisms... But that also made it a tad more difficult to follow at times. Malachy must have been quite the fun character to know!

Sue Beckwith
Home: A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews

3
I have only just started reading this and will re-evaluate when I have finished, hence the mid-range rating. One of our most beloved celebrities talks about her growing-up years and early career.

Judy Cara
Emily and Einstein by Linda Francis Lee

4
I'm not even sure how I stumbled across this book, but loved it. At the beginning, I wasn't too sure about it, but with each page that I read, this book grew on me until, like all great books, I felt a loss when it ended. I wanted it to go on forever. It's a quick and fun read.

Marsha

Good book club selection. We are an older group, but I think teens should read this one.

Cindy in CA
Home Front by Kristin Hannah

3
Called to active duty, the main character must leave her husband and two children behind to serve her county. She serves with her best friend and experiences life changing events. This is a good story and helped me understand the sacrifices our military and their families make each day.

Bonnie Gluhanich
Miss Timmins' School for Girls by Nayana Currimbhoy

3
Just okay. I read it for a book discussion group that I'm leading, so I HAD to finish it. Otherwise, I may not have done so. The character development was okay and it had atmosphere, but the plot left me cold.

Lynn Demsky
I Try Not to Drive Past Cemeteries by Evelyn David

MG
Little Brother by Cory Doctoro

5
This was an excellent piece of YA Dystopian literature. This novel actually makes you think about the issues featured in the book, like freedom vs.censorship for the sake of safety. I read a lot of YA literature and this was much better than the usual.

Denise Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

4
I enjoyed this novel, and it's a novel idea.

Laura Gold
The Spellmans Strike Again by Lisa Lutz

4
The Spellmans are back and it's fun. I love this light and quirky read about a dysfunctional family of PIs. You must read the series from the beginning because there are references to previous documents with footnotes. I'm not quite done yet, and am anxiously waiting to find out why all the doorknobs are disappearing.

Julie Bockstiegel
Admission by Jean Korelitz

3
This is the story of an admissions officer at Princeton who is kind of sleepwalking through her personal life. She receives a life-altering wake-up call in the form of a long lost son. It makes her really think about her life and where she should go from there. I like it, but don't love it.

Chris Bails

Muriel Logan
Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson

4
Major Peggigrew is a wonderful man whom the reader will admire. There is a tender love story in the book and also several conflicts which various characters have to work through. Even though I liked the book, I found it to be a bit slow at times. It's not one of those books which I wanted to race right back to when I had to put to down. My favorite part was probably the last 100 pages or so.

mary Mushrush
Vigilante by Stephen J. Cannell

5
I get books from our mobile library and after reading all they had from my favorites, I tried someone new to me! Ok not finished, must go! Thanks for new authors to try.

Maureen Hoffman-Wehmeier

Maureen Hoffman-Wehmeier
A Little Piece of My Heart by Jane Greene

3
Greene, who writes many wonderful books for women, has again written a book which appeals to "every woman." Step Mother Andi wants a child with husband Ethan, who has two daughters and does not want to go through the baby stage again. When teenager Emily becomes an unwed mother, it seems Andi prayers are answered. Or are they?

Dr Gregory Lyddy
Before the Poison by Peter Robinson

5
Using his 'love to read' language, Robinson creates a fascinating story of a murder of a husband by his easy to love protagonist wife in England, while reminding us of the pain of WWII in a manner not usually encountered. This book, like all others he has written, is five stars.

Elaine Beierbach
Thunder and Rain by Charles Martin

5
I like it for its savyness.

Michelle Boswell
Elegy for Eddie by Jacqueline Winspear

5
Another great Maisie Dobbs book. We continue to learn more about Maisie's childhood and her relationship with James Compton while solving another case. Maisie starts looking at her life and what she wants in the future. I am anxious for her next book to see how this falls into place.

Judy Bates
Next To Love by Ellen Feldman

5
A really interesting story about WWll and three women and their husbands who go off to war. Not all the men return.

Judy Bates
3 Miles Per Hour by P. Letovsky

3
The first part of this book moves fast and is more interesting than the rest, which is about a woman who walks around the world to benefit breast cancer research.

Judy Bates
Silent Honor by Danielle Steele

5
A story about WWll and the internment camps in the US for Japanese; a sad part of American history!

Coral Harrison
The Sixth Man by David Baldacci

4
This is another of Baldacci's good mysteries. Sean King and Michelle Maxwell have quite a time getting to the bottom of the problems. Looking forward to author's next book.

Julie
Vera (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov) by Stacy Schiff

4
This is a story about the love between author Vladimir Nabokov (LOLITA) and his wife, Vera. I am really enjoying this book because I enjoy Schiff''s writing style. If you've read and enjoyed Schiff's other biography, CLEOPATRA: A LIFE, then you'll want to add this book to your reading list. This title is a very thorough, engrossing biography of the woman behind the man.

Carolyn Fagan
Heads You Lose by Lisa Lutz and David Hayward

4
This book gets 4 stars due to the clever way the authors interweave two stories together. Thinking back on it, the plot line of the "real" story would not have been believable without the additional story line concerning the two authors. The notes back and forth, and then the reflections on those notes in the actual story made this a really fun read.

Sandy McCullough
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county for more than twenty years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: His fourteen-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student. Every parental instinct Andy has rallies to protect his boy. Jacob insists that he is innocent, and Andy believes him. Andy must. He’s his father. But as damning facts and shocking revelations surface, as a marriage threatens to crumble and the trial intensifies, as the crisis reveals how little a father knows about his son, Andy will face a trial of his own—between loyalty and justice, between truth and allegation, between a past he’s tried to bury and a future he cannot conceive. Award-winning author William Landay has written the consummate novel of an embattled family in crisis—a suspenseful, character-driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can spin out of control.

Bonnie Gluhanich
Bond Girl by Erin Duffy

3
No, this book isn't about James Bond's women. And, no, it isn't an in-depth look at Wall Street and the bond market. It is a fun, light, frothy, funny chick lit novel about a young woman's early years working on "the street". It's a good beach read.

Lynn
Rescue by Anita Shreve

3
I was a little disappointed by this Anita Shreve novel. It's not one of her best. I didn't feel there was enough character development, therefore I wasn't attached to any particular character. The story itself was interesting, but I think she could have done a lot more with it.

Shawna Shade
Midnight in Austenland by Shannon Hale

4
This book is such a great read, it makes me want to read Jane Austen too. I love the sense of humor of the author.

Debbie M
Aunt Dimity's Death by Nancy Atherton

3
This is the first in a series of books set in both the United States and England with the story beginning during WWII and ending in the present. I had thought the series would feature Lori Shepherd, but I soon discovered the error in my thinking. The first novel features Lori Shepherd and her involvement with Aunt Dimity. Of course, Aunt Dimity is deceased, but she orchestrates the story as a ghost or spirit. I found the story warm and fuzzy with just a hint of malice. Each book ends with a delicious recipe, this book has an oatmeal cookie that I am eager to attempt. This is not the fast paced sinister novel of James Patterson, but more like a novel by M. C. Beaton.

Kellie
The Mephisto Club by Tess Gerritsen

5
This is a series that has almost become a diamond in the rough. I remember that the first book did not really strike me as great, but it was good enough for me to want to read the second one. Ever since, this series has really caught my attention. The setting has been mostly Boston, but this book also travels to upstate New York. The Binghamton area, Lourdes Hospital, Norwich, and even Syracuse are mentioned. Jane and Maura are tracking an evil force. With the unwanted assistance of the Mephisto Club, they are hot on it’s trail. But both women have personal issues that cloud their minds. Jane’s parents are having marital problems and Maura has fallen in love with a practicing Catholic Priest. The suspense and mystery of this novel are excellent, but the personal issues add additional substance to the story. I’m always surprised at how much I enjoy this series and want to find the next book to add to my TBR.

Fatal Voyage by Kathy Reichs

3
This is comment is for FATAL VOYAGE on CD narrated by Katherine Borowitz (abridged). Once again Reichs gives us a fast-paced thriller with a likeable heroine, There was good plotting, although I thought the evil society was close to preposterous. I really like that Tempe at least TRIES to get herself out of a jam, rather than constantly relying on the "big, strong male" to save her.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde

I didn't expect to like this book so much! This literary sci-fi mystery is not my usual read. Thursday Next is a wonderful heroine, but the love interest angle was very weak. The more widely-read you are, the more you appreciate all the literary references (some quite subtle), but even if you don't get ANY of the references, you'll still enjoy the inventive story. I'll read another title by this author.

Cheryle Fisher
The Torso by Helene Tursten

5
Another Swedish author that has caught my reading fancy. Helene Tursten has created a character that is both believable and human. A part of a body is found on the shore and has everyone scrambling to know what happened. The only identifying mark is a tattoo. The gender of the body is almost impossible to determine.

Jane Squires
The Heart's Frontier by Lori Copeland and Virginia Smith

God's plans bring two people together regardless of backgrounds. You will chuckle often and find fresh faith. Can hardly wait for the next book.

Wanda Bergman
The Hand That Trembles by Kjell Eriksson

Loved this Swedish (translated to English) mystery. Honestly, it kept me page turning until way into the night ... could NOT put it down!

Leaving Whiskey Bend by Dorothy Garlock

4
This is set in the west in the 1890s. Hallie and Pearl rescue Mary from her abusive stepbrother and head west. Great story about their relationships and the events surrounding them in their new location.

Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous by Fern Michaels

4
Great story about two college students who make donations to a fertility clinic to help pay their tuition. Twenty years later they learn what really went on in the clinic. Very interesting.

Sharon Norton
Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly

A troubled New York teenager finds a diary from a girl who lived 200 years before her during the French Revolution.

Jan Hummel
Crisis by Robin Cook

5
Another great medical thriller with characters we have gotten to know and like. Robin's books always keeps me engrossed and anxious to find out who done it at the end.

Sandy McCullough
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
Andy Barber, a respected First Assistant DA who lives in Newton, Mass., with his gentle wife, Laurie, and their 14-year-old son, Jacob, must face the unthinkable in Dagger Award-winner Landay's harrowing third suspense novel. When Ben Rifkin, Jacob's classmate, is found stabbed to death in the woods, Internet accusations and incontrovertible evidence point to big, handsome Jacob. Andy's prosecutorial gut insists a child molester is the real killer, but as Jacob's trial proceeds and Andy's marriage crumbles under the forced revelation of old secrets, horror builds on horror toward a breathtakingly brutal outcome. Makes you wonder what you would have done if you were the parents. I enjoyed this book very much

Classmate Murders by Bob Moats

4
I enjoyed this mystery was fun having a 62-year-old kind of nothing finding his place in life and having great sex with a fellow 60+ -year-old lady! Thought it was wonderful he was taking care of his parents or rather helping them if they needed him. I was surprised that any of the Michigan Police would let him butt his nose in with the investigations and let him get away with it! Being a Michigander I enjoyed him using our cities and knew the bar he was referring to ... but was still a well-written, enjoyable read and will look for the next in this series!

Miss Melville Returns by Evelyn E. Smith

Now that she’s really not the hit lady she was I just don’t care for the books. I miss the guy she worked with, as a supposedly brother-in-law he stinks and Jill is just plain boring. I don’t care for art, other to look at an awful lot of boring detail that just was a waste of time reading plus really difficult to believe she could be making what she is per painting, she ought to go back to being an assassin.

Michael McAdam
A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

5
VERY detailed (in a good way) book continuing the story from A Game of Thrones. GREAT read - trying to keep ahead of the TV show so I can read what happens first before seeing it. Love this series!

The Woman at the Light by Joanna Brady

4
This is a novel set in the 1800's. It is about a well-born southern woman who finds courage and strength to overcome tragedy. I enjoy historical fiction and I highly recommend this book.

Edith Frere
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

Perhaps I am the only one who never read this book in high school or college. Thank goodness a friend gave it to me. What a rich and engaging book.

Blood from a Stone by Donna Leon

4
Venetian Commissario Guido Brunetti is involved in the investigation of a murder of a black street vendor. The story revolves around blood diamonds and the urging of the Italian government to stop the investigation. Leon teaches us about many subjects as she reveals the political intrigue rampant in Italy.

L. Frank
Atonement by Ian McEwan

3
An interesting book that has verbal finesse in addition to valuable life lessons.

Debbie M
Aunt Dimity and the Duke by Nacy Atherton

2
I am dismayed that the characters from the first Aunt Dimity novel are not in this novel. The only thread woven from the last novel is Aunt Dimity and the Pym twins. This is an interesting story of deception and loyalty among a small English village. Atherton writes a mild, easy-going mystery with no graphic murder scenes. Atherton dwells on family and love instead of pain and murder. Many readers will miss the blood and gore and past on reading the Aunt Dimity series.

Jackie Ranaldo
Forgotten Country by Catherine Chung

4
Loving this book. I have been reading it and listening on audio when in the car (not in love with the audio). It's a much better read. Concerns the two very different daughters of a Korean immigrant family. When their father becomes ill, their true colors come out.

Lorna
11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
Fabulous story about time travel. Stephen King at his best. I reccomend this to everyone, even if you are not a fan of Stephen King because you think everything he does is horror and gore. You may even learn some history along the way.
