The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

4
This book is a maze of twists and turns! A mix of the secret garden with the authentic gothic darkness of Jane Eyre. Just a good unique story!

Janice
Little Bee by Chris Cleave

5
Wonderful writing, so visual. Fiction book, but many people today are going through exactly what Little Bee went through. The author made me feel like I wanted to shake up some of the characters. Where is their good sense!

Julie Sorum
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
A story you won't soon forget ... extraordinary!

Heather
Catherine the Great by Robert K. Massie

4
Massie is THE biographer of the Russian monarchy. This is the engrossing story of Catherine, who was born a minor German princess and later ruled the Russian Empire. Massie has a gift for making history come alive. Even though this is a long and detailed book, the pages fly by! I'm only about a quarter of the way into the book but am really enjoying it. If you haven't read "Nicholas and Alexandra", also by Massie, it is amazing! Recommend both books.

Anne-Marie Chandler
Happy Birthday by Danielle Steele

4
Steele writes beautiful romances, yet most could be edited as she tends to repeat the characters' feelings a few times too many. This is among my favorites.

Melissa Barnes
Malled: My Unintentional Career in Retail by Caitlin Kelly

4
As someone who has worked retail for years it's great to read someone else's perspective. I find her take on her job situation enlightening and interesting.

CD
Bleed for Me by Michael Robotham

4
Psychologist Joe O'Loughlin is losing his wife and alienating his daughter. One of his daughter's friends is swept up in a murder, and Joe is taken along with her. The closer her gets to the girl's secrets, the closer he gets to a truly creepy killer. Superlative mystery. Tight quick prose, able action sequences, and, most importantly, quality characterization make this novel a winner.

Mary Mahaney
11/23/63 by Stephen King

5
What if you could go back in time and change the course of history? Stephen King explores what it might be like to try to save JFK from assassination on that horrible day in Texas. Could you change the events that came about? Would you, if you were able? What if it seemed like it was for the greater good? Even if you could, what other things would be affected? King uses his genius and literary skill to explore the "butterfly effect" in this, his recent novel released, fittingly, in November 2011.

Renee Booker
Home Front by Kristin Hannah

5
Ms Hannah, is a very good teacher. Love the author and down home love for family.

Marilyn Denington
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

5
Hannah sucks you into the characters immediately even as she unfolds them in detail. She writes about how a life can be changed in the blink of an eye no matter how hard a mother tries to shelter her children. Well-written and a page-turner!

Kay Nottolini
The Dry Grass of August by Anna Jean Mayhew

5
Family takes a trip through southern states with their colored maid, Mary, in the early '50's. Story centers around a family of four children, a strained marriage and told from the viewpoint of a 14 y/o girl. Her relationship with Mary is the heart of this story. Tragedy befalls and you feel the tension in the writing as it it works up to this event. Although it took a while for this story to to get legs when it did it went at break neck speed. Debut novel.

Donna Petrilla
Red Mist by Patricia Cornwell

2
Newest Kay Scarpetta mystery, save your money. As a long time fan who has read every one, this one is the worst yet. Book is way too long, loaded with unnecessary characters and filler. Ending is amateurish. Do not think I'll be reading any more in this series.

Nina Picone
In Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant

4
Have not yet finished this book but I am loving the historical window into 1500s Venice. Reminds me of a Philippa Gregory Novel. It transports you to another time and place through the eyes of some very interesting and colorful characters.

Donna Petrilla
The Litigators by John Grisham

4
Thoroughly enjoyed "The Litigators". Reminded me of enjoyable earlier Grisham works. A quirky group of ambulance chasing lawyers with an underdog that you'll be rooting for. A good story w/some humor as well. I haven't enjoyed a John Grisham book like this in a while.

Sharon
If the Church Were Christian by Philip Gulley

5
More laity as well as pastors need to read this as Gulley has certainly hit the nail on the head concerning "the church" and the fact that so many so called Christians apparently have never really absorbed the life of Jesus of Nazareth -- and maybe never even read the gospels. This should be a must-read and study book for everyone who claims the name.

Wynn Smith
Serial by John Lutz

5
John Lutz scares me again! Another serial killer is loose in New York City and Frank Quinn and Associates are assigned by the Commissioner to catch the brutal killer. The killer is called "The Skinner". (Use your imagination). What makes the Quinn novels really frightening to me is that Lutz introduces each victim. You get to know them. You get a perfect picture of who they are and how they live. You cheer for them and then follow them to their horrifying deaths. There are lots of twists and turns that kept me reading, guessing and sliding to the edge of my seat. When you think it's all figured out Lutz throws in another twist to keep the story going. Serial is a clever tale to the very satisfying end! What I love most about these novels is the relationship between Quinn and Pearl. They're still awesome partners in business and in their personal lives. Although Quinn may be hopelessly in love, Pearl always hesitates. She seems less harsh since her tragedy in Mister X. Her mother in the "nursing home" is still a hoot and frumpy Fedderman finds a new purpose. I'm looking forward to book 7!

Maureen Timerman
Guilty by Association by Pat Simmons

5
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was hard to put down! Love this family, and the kids are adorable!! This is a must read and it will warm you all over!

Elizabeth Watson
Innocent by Scott Turow

5
Scott Turow writes an impressive legal thriller. I have waited a long time for this sequel to Presumed Innocent, and it lives up the hopes I had for it.

Shelley
Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian

5
This is not your typical novel by Bohjalian. Set at the end of World War 2, a mother, her 2 children and a POW leave Poland traveling west to avoid the advancing Russians. Not only a tale of suffering and deprivation, the author shows how the characters grow and develop. Excellent story.

Francisca E B
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

5
Classic gothic novel, and a great psychological thriller. What was so great about the late Rebecca DeWinter? Our heroine finds the secret and faces down her enemies. I listened to the audio book, perfectly narrated by Anna Massey.

Gail
11/22/63 by Stephen King

4
King has a fantastic imagination. He doesn't have all the answers about time travel, but he definitely makes you think about all of the "what-ifs." In other words, if you go back in time and change one thing, how many other things may that one change affect.

Allison Gardner
The Three Weissmanns of Westport: A Novel by Cathleen Schine

3
Great story about family life & divorce.

Cheryl
Home Front by Kristin Hannah

Thanks for the giveaway!

Eileen Palmer
The Typist by Michael Knight

5
A fascinating look at post-WWII Japan and the men who occupied it.

Debbie M
Hidden by Shelley Shepard Gray

3
Gray explores the Amish way of life in her many of her books, such as theses series: Sisters of the Heart, Seasons of Sugarcreek, and Families of Honor. I have enjoyed exploring her writing in two of the series. Both series present a simple formula for the story with mild characters and simplistic setting. The main emphasis in each book is family and the power of God. In this story, Anna runs away from her "English" life of modern day comforts and possessions to hide from a cruel boyfriend. Anna runs to the Brenneman Amish Bed and Breakfast and adopts the Amish way of life while hiding. Anna also falls in love with Henry, the son of the inn's owners. In the conclusion of the story, Anna must choose her path, but with God's guidance.

Barbara Peters
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

4
Was not what I expected, was pretty dark, don't think I will read the sequel.

Shirley Dameron
Secrets of Harmony Grove by Mindy Starns Clark

5
I love a great romantic mystery and this one is plus reminds me of the grace and forgiveness God gives all of us.

Sue Smith
Catherine the Great by Robert Massie

4
I am learning so much about the Russian court and the forward thinking of Catherine. I visited several palaces and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and am imaging these settings as I read. I find myself wanting to just curl up and read constantly.

Anne Clancy
Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas

5
Wonderfully told historical fiction, set in Colorado. A book that is too hard to put down.

Jean M
The 13th Juror by John T Lescroart

5
This is the fourth book in the Dismas Hardy series. Dismas is an ex-cop bartender and ex-Assistant District Attorney turned defense attorney in San Francisco. The series also includes Abe Glitsky, a black, Jewish cop who is a great friend of Dismas. The dialog between the two is fun to read. This book is one in which Dismas defends a woman whose husband and son have been murdered. She is charged with their murders. Every thing seems to point to her guilt. This one keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the end. I really enjoyed reading it.

Margaret La due
Second Glance by Jodi Picoult

3
I love Jodi Picoult books, and although I liked the story line of this one, it was a little confusing to keep every one straight.

Norice Maggert
The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

3
We are led to a tobacco plantation around the late 1700's when a 7-year-old Irish girl on her way to America is orphaned and sold to a plantation owner in the deep south as an indentured slave. She is assigned to work in the kitchen house with other slaves. What happens to her and others while she is there will reveal a world as we have not seen before.and will bring forth a new fictional story embedded in the history of the old south.

Marcia Rutten

Great generational read. Mother -> daughter -> grandma.

Joyce Clark
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

4
I'm really enjoying this book. It brings you right into 1938 Manhattan life. Great characters to boot!

Sandra Austin
Across the Universe by Beth Revis

3
Although this is a Young Adult title I have become intrigued with the premise of a catastrophe on the planet earth and a space ship traveling to a planet 250 years away. The crew of the ship consist of people who are manipulated by Eldest. The mission is to deliver cryogenic ally frozen teams of scientist, teachers, etc to the destination planet. When one of the "cells" has the plug pulled and the inhabitant thaws, the mystery begins.

Linda Barraclough
Such Devoted Sisters by Eileen Goudge

3
I loved reading about two sisters - so completely different, yet completely devoted to each other. Each has unique qualities which we all wish we could possess. The story is completely believable, with elements of a stressful early life and how it progresses into glamor and intrigue.

Daryl Evangelista
Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich

4
As always, the Stephanie Plum books are very entertaining. It's a light, uplifting, fun read!

Patricia Crowley
The Winter Sea by Susannna Kearsley

5
Enjoyed the blending of the past to the future.

Anita Nowak
11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
I was lucky enough to win this recently in a book contest (one of three) and had read wonderful reviews about it. I normally do not like Mr. King's horror stories, but since I had heard such good things about this one, I decided to delve into it. Be aware it is a huge volume of over 800 pages. However, it is so engrossing that I read it very quickly and enjoyed every page. It is the story of a man who tries to go back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Strange things begin to happen, and it is quite a page turner. I recommend it very highly! Enjoy!

Judith Mosconi
Kitchen Chinese by Ann Mah

5
Isabelle is a Chinese American and as such she is used to being stared at. At home she has taken the traditional Saturday classes in Mandarin and speaks a "kitchen Chinese" when she must. When she loses her job, Isabelle decides to get away and visit her sister in Beijing. There she learns what being Chinese really means and struggles to understand exactly how she fits in when she looks like everyone else.

Arin
Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

5
I could not put this book down - nor could my book club! This book is about Lavina, a 7-year-old girl orphaned from Ireland. A plantation owner, and the ships captain takes her home and has her live and grow up with his slaves. This story is so gripping I could not put it down!!! A must read!!!

Evelyn Hershkowitz
The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman

4
Wonderful book. A love story during World War II. Couldn't put it down.

Judith Mosconi
Death of a Red Heroine by Xiaolong Qiu

4
Inspector Chen has been assigned the job of detective in Shanghai. But, he is also a published poet, and this is his true love. He was lucky that as an only son he was not sent away during the Cultural Revolution. Now, as an educated man he has advantages over others and even has his own apartment. China in the 1990's, not so long ago, is a repressive, invasive place to live. This story shows the conditions under which many existed, but there is hope as individuals show their humanity and manage to live real lives in the midst. And, of course, there is murder.

Rosemary Krejsa
The Winter Palace by Eva Stachniak

5
This novel of Catherine the Great and Varvara, her servant, is a wonderful read. The characters are so well written that you feel that you are there in the Russian Court as all this intrigue is happening. I couldn't put the book down. The splendor of the Russian court combined with the secrets and the deceit give you an amazing look at the real people of the aristocracy and how they changed history.

Sylvie
Chalk Girl by Carol O'Connell

4
An interesting premise for Mallory to solve. Many intriguing characters. The only thing I didn't like was the more-passive-than-usual tone of the book. If you liked previous Mallory books, you'll like this one.

Barbara Mardones
Mi Moto Fidel by Christopher P. Baker

3
Lots of imaginatively descriptive scenes from a macho man exploring forbidden Cuba on his motorcycle.

Kim Bacon
The Four Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone

4
Hard to put down, and just when you think you've got it figured out, another twist turns the plot! An interesting story of a girl being raised by her aunt after being abandoned by her con-artist father, who later reappears in her life, needing her help. Felt I really knew the characters, and along with them, I felt all the emotion. Good read!

rhonda lomazow
No One is Here Except All of Us by Ramona Ausubel

5
Beautiful book - should be a bestseller.

bonnie markiewicz
Through My Eyes by Tim Tebow and Nathan Whitaker

4
Story well worth reading because he is a good roll model however actual writing could be better and editing could definitely be better. Does anyone edit anymore or do they just use spell check?

Annette Schmidt
The Sisters by Nancy Jensen

5
A multi-generational story of two sisters who become estranged due to a misunderstanding. Beautifully written with believable characters (some you like and others you don't).

Judith Mroz
The Maid of Fairbourne Hall by Julie Klassen

4
I enjoyed this book, but feel the first two books by this author were excellent and the later ones just don't hold up to the others. This is an author I will continue to read.

Dona Malesic
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

5
This book was food for thought for my book club! Everyone connected to it in some way: as a mother, their mother, or sibling situations. The teenage drunk driving theme reminded many of Jodi Picoult's books and we had a great discussion about the students who we know who drink and drive and party at a young age.

Peggy Busch
The Scottish Prisoner by Diana Gabaldon

5
Another engrossing read by my favorite author. I'm thrilled to be reading about Jamie Fraser again.

Rita Cameron
Homer and Langley by E. L. Doctorow

4
Fascinating story.

Sally-Jo Waterfall
Nightwoods by Charles Frazier

4
Interesting dynamics between the characters. I wasn't clear on why the children were pyromaniacs. I liked Luce and Stubblefield. Sometimes I had to reread sections to help clarify what was going on. The descriptions of the scenery were good.

Joan Nilson
THE HUNGER GAMES by SUZANNE COLLINS

5
Could not stop reading until I finished. Excellent book.

Elaine Beierbach
Catch Me by Lisa Gardner

I love her books and I know her characters.

Dian Boysen
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

I really enjoy her writing. You care about the characters. Sometimes you don't always like them. I never knew what was coming next. The Amazon setting was interesting and scary.

Arthur Harriman
The Innocence of Father Brown by G. K. Chesteron

5
Short, round-faced, humble Father Brown oftentimes in the company of a former thief, the massive Flambeau, quietly and gently solves crime after baffling crime in a set of fascinating short stories set in the early 19th Century.

Marcia Rutten
Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plub at her best!!!

Timothy Purk
Out of OZ by Gregory Maguire

5
The conclusion to the Maguire's Wicked Years series give revelation and resolution to the wonderfully expanded explanations of all the favorite characters first introduced to readers in Frank Baum's original stories. A gift for fans of all things Oz.

Tanya Fredrick
Moloka'i by Alan Brennert

5
This book sucked me completely in immediately. Thank goodness I was on vacation and could literally just spend a couple of days reading it! It starts with a 7-year-old who is sent away from her family in Honolulu to Moloka'i when she contracts leprosy. Unlike many of the other lepers, she lives for a very long time and the reader gets to follow her saga. If you like historical fiction and books that will make you cry don't miss this one!

Susan Vasi
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
A fantasy of magic, mystery and wonderful descriptions of a strange and beautiful circus that opens at dusk and closes at dawn. I was completely drawn into the story and it's setting.

Wilma Frana
Hidden Summit by Robyn Carr

Wilma Frana
One Summer by JoAnn Ross

Very interesting story, slightly erotic, but well-writtten

Anne Burley
11/22/63 by Steven King

5
JFK was shot on my birthday so I've heard many stories about the events of that day and how it impacted friends and family. This led me to become an avid reader of JFK's life and legend. I have never read a Steven King novel. Although fiction it is intriguing, mysterious and realistic all at the same time. I would recommend it to other JFK followers.

Lori Alcorn
The Preacher's Bride by Jody Hedlund

4
The is a very interesting book of christian fiction set in the 1600 in puritan England. I'm really enjoying it and think that if you like history and church history along with a bit of very clean romance you will like it too.

Carol Wong
Uncompromised by Nada Prouty

5
It is an amazing true story of how a Lebanese girl who was abused verbally and beaten by her father and brother became a Special Agent in the FBI and CIA. She worked on the investigation of bombing of the USS Cole, hijacking of the Pam Am 73.

Reeta Harrison
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

5
I have just started this book but I like it already. Oskar's thoughts are fascinating and I can't wait to see where they lead us.

Muriel Logan
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

5
I enjoy historical fiction and really know little of our history with the Chinese people or of many of their struggles in their own country. The setting for this book is 1933-1953, begins in China, and ends up in the USA. I learned more about this time period in Chinese/American history. The story concerns two sisters who endure hardships and suffering, arranged marriages, and adjusting to life in a new country. I'm finding the book to be well written and hard to put down.

Nancy
Half Past Dawn by Richard Doetsch

5
Man awakes with injuries and a newspaper headline proclaiming his death. Enlisting the help of friends he tries to untangle what happened to him and his wife the night before, which is worse than he could have imagined. Great suspense, did not want to put it down

Betty Jo Harris
The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka

4
Heard the hype on this book and all of it is TRUE. The language is spare and exactly just right. Congratulations to a fine author on a fine book which tells the story of Japanese mail-order brides who voyage to America for a new life in a strange land. Don't miss reading this one.

veronica mackinnon
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

4
I just finished it and so did my husband. We both liked it very much. It was a good story which stirred many emotions

Linda Shallash
The House at Sea's End by Elly Griffiths

4
The eroding North Sea coast of England; a cliff side mansion with it's tiny village; the complicated adulterous relationship between the forensic archeologist and the DCI; WWII era murder victims uncovered on the beach; contemporaneous deaths of elderly men; brilliant writing; all converge in the unraveling of this mystery, where character and setting are as important and satisfying as plot.

Sheila Soloff
The Innocent by Harlan Coben

5
I recently discovered Harlan Coben as a new (for me) author, and am currently backtracking through his older books. This book, like his others, is a fast paced thriller filled with twists and unexpected turns. Although there are some recurring characters the books do not have to be read in order. I would rate this as thoroughly engaging read.

Doris Willis
Fall of Giants by Ken Follett

4
This is a good book to read at home. At almost 1000 pages it is hard to take on a trip. Once I got into the story I enjoyed it and it draws you in to the extent that I want him to publish #2 in the proposed trilogy. This book helps you learn a little more about WW1.

Judith Reynolds
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

3
For those who have read Hemingway, this book gives insight into the sometimes self-destructive, sometimes tender lifestyle of the man behind the books, as seen from the point of view of his first wife. If I hadn't read Hemingway, however, I would have found it a bit dull reading about the hedonistic lives of Paris in the 1920s.

Judith Chipley
The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzzanne Collins

5
I never thought I would read anything like this. My granddaughter said "try it you'll love it" she was right. I have never read anything like this. This is absolutely terrific. I couldn't wait to read the next one. I've read Catching Fire and am now on the last one Mockingjay. I love and admire the characters. This was written as a young adult book I am 73 and possibly in my second childhood, lol. I cannot recommended these books too highly, they are well written and great.

Debbie E
The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly

4
Michael Connelly is a wonderful writer, and I am a huge fan of the Harry Bosch books. The Fifth Witness story line revolves around the housing crisis and fraudulent mortgage situation. This is the third book in the Mickey Haller series, it is good but does not draw you into the story as quickly as the first two.

Veronica Earley
SILVER LIKE DUST: One Family's Story of America's Japneses Internment by Kimi Cunningham Grant

4
Reads like fiction. Author does a great job of telling her Grandmother's story. Very interesting.

Donna Boulmay
New Tricks by David Rosenfelt

5
I've recently discovered David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series and love them. The character is a criminal defense attorney who loves dogs, especially his golden retriever, Tara. If you like a good "who dun-it" and dogs, you'll like this series.

Ilene Harris
Jane Austen Ruined My Life by Beth Pattillo

4
If you liked any of Jane Austen's books, you will really like this, a lite romance, In today's England, living many of her books.

Connie Fischer
To the Moon and Back by Jill Mansell

4
Ellie lost her husband, Jamie, in an auto accident a year ago and she still conjures up a vision of him when she needs to talk to him. This gives her comfort. She has worked for several years as a PA in a OK job and still lives in the not-so-OK flat she shared with Jamie. Jamie's father is a successful actor who encourages her to move into a nice home in a nice area which he also will use as his pied-de-terre when back in the UK from his filming in California. Ellie finds a new job, new neighbor and new boss. This change where no one really knows she is a widow helps her to find new happiness in her life. I really enjoyed this book with its great characters. Watch Ellie find the strength to let go of the past and learn to love again.

Connie Fischer
Eats, Poops and Leaves by Adam Wasson

4
This is a book for new and "old" moms with lots of humor to help everyone to laugh at the situations we all face when raising children. It is a type of etiquette book for someone with babies with lots of "tongue-in-cheek" advice on how to handle lots of embarrassing situations. A quick and a must read for moms and dads alike.

Connie Fischer
Elizabeth The Queen by Sally Bedell Smith

5
I have read many books about Queen Elizabeth but I must say this is one that was well-researched and interestingly written. The story of Queen Elizabeth's life is presented in a open way without any type of author opinion expressed. It's just the facts and facts that I have never read about before. For royal followers like myself, I highly recommend this enthralling book.

Barbara Scott-Cannon
Mao's Last Dancer by Cunxin Li

5
A story of the fierce dedication of a dancer as he is allowed to leave his country to study in the US. This book challenges the reader to experience all sorts of emotions while glimpsing communism at work and the affect that a glimpse of our freedoms can have on those less fortunate.

J Hunsinger
"V" is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

3
Although Kinsey's story is well known to readers A through U, this book seems wordier, detailed, & more character packed than the others. but it is still interesting & entertaining when everyone is sorted out.

Veronica Earley
A TRAIN IN WINTER by Caroline Moorehead

5
One of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. The book tells the story of the lives of women who joined the resistance in France when the German's invaded, and were captured and taken by train to Auschwitz.

Joyce Duncan.
Star of Flint by Jill Smith Entrekin

5
Star of Flint is a great Southern tale, part home town antics of a ten year old girl and part mystery. It had me chuckling and then almost in tears. This is the author's first book and hopefully not her last one. I enjoyed this book immensely.

Jackie Hulbert
Red Mist by Patricia Cornwell

4
I've been disappointed in the last 3 of Cornwell's books, but on this one, she's hit the mark again. Scarpetta once again seems to be refreshed in her working though the tricky roads and side alleys of crime. An excellent read for a cold winter's night by the fireplace.

Pattie Berryhill
Love in a Nutshell by Janet Evanovich

1
Could have been an interesting story, but romance got in the way. It was just dumb. A waste of my time.

Mrs JaneAnn Clear
Hot Rain by Kat Martin

4
Keeps ya on the edge of your seat. This story of gun smuggling not just guns high-tech weaponry but with a love story and catches you from first page with a boat explosion.try it not my genre but sure enjoyed this one.

Shannon Jensen
The Future of Us by Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler

5
This young adult book uses Facebook as a major part of the storyline with a couple of teens who use it to alter their futures. So far, this is my favorite read this year. I loved both Asher's 13 REASONS WHY and Mackler's THE EARTH, MY BUTT, AND OTHER BIG ROUND THINGS so a book by the two of them was just a no-brainer for me and so far, it does not disappoint!

gretchen kempff
Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

3
Loved, loved, loved her other books ... so far (1/3 through) I am very disappointed. It is dragging and the plot isn't well developed. Hope I change my mind. Perhaps when my group discusses it, it will open my mind to what I think is missing.

Judith Bates
Out of the Deep I Cry by Julia Spencer-Fleming

5
I really like this series!

Judith Bates
The Monuments Men by Robert M. Edsel

5
This book was fascinating! It reads like a "thriller!" It is incredible the magnitude of what the Nazis stole from the people of Europe! And where it was hidden! What if the Soviets had gotten there sooner than the Americans? It would still be lost!

Judith Bates
The Women at Otowi Crossing by Frank Waters

5
The story of Edith Warner, fictionalized by Frank Waters, a woman who lived at the base of the mountain on the Rio Grande River below Los Alamos during WWll. A grand story about a time of history that was truly amazing and interesting. I don't know why I waited so long to read it!

Joan
The Scottish Prisoner by Diana Gabaldon

5
The story is told, in alternating chapters, from Lord John's and Jamie's points of view. Unlike other books featuring Lord John, you don't have to have read other books in the series. Great story, great plot and lots of action.

Crystal Blackburn
The Wisdom of Father Dowling by Ralph McInerny

5
This collection of Father Dowling short stories is wonderful. Roger Dowling is a Catholic priest who happens to be a good amateur detective.

Carolyn Fagan
Death Comes to Pemberley by P. D. James

4
Definitely has the feel of an Austen novel and it is great fun to get to read about some favorite characters - I only wish there was more of Darcy and Elizabeth it this one.

Pat S.
The Look of Love by Mary Jane Clark

5
The first book I've read on my new Kindle!!!! Loved the book and loved the Kindle. Can't wait to read more this way. It has a few twists and turns so Mary Jane keeps you guessing about "who did it?".

Nina Priddy
Love Unfinished by Darian Wilk

3
I'm almost finished with it, it's a fairly good book. I've enjoyed it. It deals with infidelity, and although it's not something I agree with, it's understandable in the book. I'm hoping for something big and unexpected at the end to make me remember this one long after I've finished. It's not that I don't like the book, but it's nothing that will really stick with me.

Susan Kellett
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

5
Love a book that grabs you on the first page. Well-written good story and interesting characters.

Holly Mueller
A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron

4
I liked this book a lot. It's told from the point of view of a dog, who keeps getting reborn as a new dog. During each life, he tries to figure out what his purpose is. If you're a dog owner, it will change how you look at your dog! It's an uplifting story. I enjoyed it.

I find myself stopping to check facts, as some happenings are so incredible, but this book is a delicious bit of historic fiction and very interesting.

Amy
The Beach Tree by Karen White

5
I love the way Karen White write both past mysteries and present mysteries intertwined.

Tanya Fredrick
Keeper of the Light by Diane Chamberlain

5
Diane Chamberlain is one of my favorite authors and this one did not disappoint! She originally wrote this back in the early 1990's and it was republished and she has written a sequel. This had her trademark love story with a woman scorned and a new perfect male to sweep her off her feet and there is lots of drama along the way. The settings are usually in the Outer Banks which helps me get a beach vibe here in Colorado. I am glad I already have the sequel waiting on my bookshelf!

Beverly Price
The Passage by Justin Cronin

5
Even though this was a book with many pages and has been out for quite a while I loved it and didn't want to put it down. I look forward to the next book which will be a continuation of this book. They say it as a cross between "The Stand" and "The Road". I believe that is true as I have read both of them.

Ginny Horton
Remembering Sarah by Chris Mooney

5
This is a wonderful book of psychological fiction and suspense. It is about a father who, against his wife's wishes, takes his daughter sledding and she disappears. It definitely draws your interest from the very first page. Wonderfully written.

Mary Tillotson
The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens

4
I always have loved reading mysteries from the time I started reading, from Nancy Drew to Agatha Christie and many many more down through the years. My reading resolution for 2012 is to read Charles Dickens.I decided to start with Edwin Drood which coincidentally enough is the story he never finished because he died before it was done.I usually enjoy reading classics esp. ones I have never taken time to read yet.

Sherrie Gil
Bloodroot by Susan Wittig Albert

4
I stumbled on this series on ebooks from the library.

Nikki
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

4
I was surprised to enjoy this book since it is a young adult book and I'm a grandmother. But I think that's part of why I liked it. It was a very fast read that I couldn't put down. I immediately started the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire, because I need to know what happens to the characters. The second book seems to be just as entertaining & fast as the first one.

Augusta R. Malvagno
An Amish Christmas by Cynthia Keller

5
Vivid writing, great character development, and the pairing of a formerly affluent family from North Carolina vs. the wonderful Amish lifestyle in Lancaster, PA. Put these characters together, get lost in the beautiful, scenic countryside ... and you have a rich and satisfying read with a peaceful ending,

Kathy Iwasaka
Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs

4
Another fast and fun Temperance Brennan mystery. The forensics are fascinating and the characters keep what could be gruesome science entertaining.

Teresa Fagerlind
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

4
Love it. Always enjoy a book by Kristian Hannah.

Jean V.
Love in a Nutshell by Janet Evanovich & Dorien Kelly

4
I picked up this book solely because it was co-authored by Janet Evanovich. While it is not a Stephanie Plum mystery, it is a light and breezy romance. I found myself relaxing with this entertaining, fun read.

Gale Kearley
THE LATE MAN by James Preston Girard

The Best Advice I Ever Got by Katie Couric

5
What a fabulous read! This book is filled with sage advice about life. It contains snippets from well-known people about taking risks, finding your passion, and finding joy in life. This book was both moving and inspirational. Well done!

Debbie M
A Secret Kept by Tatiana de Rosnay

2
I like this novel better than Sarah's Key. The story is told by Antoine Rey, a middle-aged man dealing with all the tragedies of life. The story begins with Antoine and Melanie celebrating Melanie's 40th birthday at a village the family visited every summer until 1973. The long weekend ends as Melanie wrecks the car when she tries to tell Antoine something she remembered about their mother that last summer. The story descends into the depths of hell as death any dying seem to be everywhere. Antoine delves into the story of his mother and trying to discover her secret. The ray of hope that holds Antoine from the abyss is the mortician, Angele Many times during the story I felt that certain sections were extra cargo and did not need to be included in the story. Now, I see the symbolism of these random sections. I am not sure that Rosnay portrayed Antoine correctly.

Paulette Mandell
Chalk Girl by Carol O'Connell

5
Way before the girl with the dragon tattoo, there was Mallory. The writing is lyrical. One book every two or three years, it is not just written, it is crafted.

Dennis Beierbach
Catch Me by Lisa Gardner

4
I like her characters. They are not super heroes.

Janice
Words Made Flesh by Larry Woiwode

4
This is a book of essays from Woiwode covering all kinds of topics from William Shakespeare to killing a deer. He has excellent insights, makes you think and a beautiful writing style.

Kim Mullin
The Seventh Month by Lisa Gardner

4
Very much like Gardner's normal style. I love reading about DD Warren and her adventures. It was a good read. It just seemed to go by way too quick.

Michele Counihan
Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

5
This is a wonderful, absorbing novel about the first Native American to study at Harvard. Geraldine Brooks writes beautifully in the language of the seventeenth century New England. Her characters are well-developed and the story flows easily. It is writing at its very best - intelligent, descriptive, clear, entertaining, and compelling.

cyndy anderson
Waking Hours by Lis Wiehl and Pete Nelson

This book is intriguing from start to finish. There is some supernatural, along with mystery. The end leaves you anxiously awaiting the next book!

Betty DeLuca

Excellent book, I couldn't put in down. So well written, it immediately drew you in.

Death Comes to Pemberley by P. D. James

3
I have read several sequels to Pride and Prejudice and have been disappointed time after time. I started reading this book (which came highly recommended by several friends) and thought, finally, here is a sequel to do justice to the original. Alas, about a third of the way into the book I was once again disappointed. The characters were pale imitations of their originals. I kept waiting for the spark between Darcy and Elizabeth to appear, but it never happened. Elizabeth's sisters (with the exception of the description of Mary ... she never really appeared in the book) were blah caricatures of what the reader thought they probably would be. The mystery itself, while initially interesting was soon less than compelling. While this book was certainly much better than any of the sequels to Pride and Prejudice that I've read, it was no Pride and Prejudice.

Bridget
The Scrapbook of Frankie Pratt by Caroline Preston

5
I am not one to use words such as charming or endearing, but I find they are necessary when describing this book. This is a coming of age novel about a young woman from Vermont who goes off to college and then the big cities of New York and Paris during the 1920s. The plot is pretty thin and predictable, but the way the story is told in scrapbook format makes up for it by leaps and bounds. Frankie was an endearing character, I cannot imagine anyone not cheering her on. I also felt I learned a lot about the popular culture of the time with all the amazing graphics that this book included.

Joan Karlowsky
Catherine The Great by Robert K. Massie

5
This may be the year of Catherine of Russia and therefore this book will be a definite source for all things Catherine. Well written, not dry and well researched this is the story of a German teenager who is unloved by her Mother until she is plucked to be the wife of Peter the Great's daughter Elizabeth of Russia's nephew. It is an unfortunate match as the nephew is truly strange and uninterested in Russia. Catherine becomes more Russian than her countrymen and embarks on an amazing journey to greatness despite all odds against her. The author makes her come to life and does it without mentioning some of the false tales that have become folklore truths such as the misconception that she died under a horse. Wonderful story.

Diane Porter
Tuesday Night Miracles by Kris Radish

4
The characters are well developed, and Radish manages to keep suspense going without overdoing it! I loved the introduction of Phyllis because she helped to keep a balance throughout the story. This was the first Radish book I had tried, but it certainly won't be the last.

Diane Porter
Mozarts' Last Aria: a novel by Matt Rees

3
A well-researched novel about Mozart's death and the drama surrounding it at the time. Rees is a reporter by background, and the prose reflects that. Mozart's sister Nannerl is the main character, and I enjoyed finding out more about her.

Erika Loiacono
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Jan Kanowitz
The Sisters by Nancy Jensen

5
This book is about two sisters and a misunderstanding that has impact throughout the generations. The story begins in the 1920' and shows the effect an undelivered note can have on families far into the future.

Helen W
SHOCK WAVE by John Sanford

4
Another excellent entry in his Virgil Flowers series. While we all love Lucas Davenport his most long standing character, Virgil is a really fresh breath of air. He is charming and funny and solves mysteries in an unforgettable way. Excellent reading.

Jill Porco
I'll Walk Alone by Mary Higgins Clark

4
Not a bad effort fro Mary Higgins Clark, this story of a woman who has to clear her name due to identity theft gone awry, but it lacks (thus far) the oomph of her previous books. Her trademark suspense even seems a little off as she draws some connections between the case threads early in the story. I hope the pace picks up soon.

Lynn Jarrett
The Innocent by Taylor Stevens

5
Excellent book in the continuing saga of Vanessa Michael Munroe.

Lynn Jarrett
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
Excellent book!! I am still thinking about different parts of the book. It has all of the elements one wants in a good book -- mystery, love, intrigue, magic, memorable characters, and lots of imagination.

Linda Zabel
The Soldier's Wife by Margaret George

Elizabeth Harrelson
Savage Nature by Christine Feehan

5
This book is one of her Leopard People Series - it is the terrific, If you like her books and have not read this series. I Would Highly recommend it or any of her other books. She is a fantastic writer. Once you read one book you can't put it down and want to continue reading the rest of her books.

Yet another gripping book from James Patterson. I'm "reading" it on audiobook so don't even mind the traffic jams on my way home from work!

Anne Derkat
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt

4
It's a quirky western - a story of 2 brothers who are hired killers. I couldn't put it down.

Linda Johnson
My Reading Life by Pat Conroy

4
This is Conroy's homage to his love of reading which he acquired from his mother and fostered his writing career. I felt Conroy's love of reading rivals my own and is able to transcribe that love into a marvelous prose poem - weaving word phrases into a material far lovelier than one would suspect were possible when observing the individual words. According to Conroy the four most important words in the English Language are "Tell me a story." He did an alluring job with this tale. (This was especially relevant to me since War and Peace is discussed and I am reading it now.)

Crystal Blackburn
Mr. Monk is Cleaned Out by Lee Goldberg

5
This series of books featuring the characters from the hit television show is wonderful. The events take place before the eighth and final season of the television show ran on USA Network. Adrian Monk is fired from his consulting gig at the San Francisco Police Department due to budget cuts. And he loses all his money because his investment adviser was a Bernie Madoff. And his favorite brand of bottled water (the only one he will drink) is discontinued because the company goes out-of-business. And Captain Stottlemeyer doesn't trust Monk's judgment in the case he is no longer being paid to investigate. Monk is a mess but he is still brilliant. He just isn't suited to do anything but solve crime.

Ellen Martin
Night Road by Kristin Hannah

5
Just finished K. Hannah's Night Road. This book really kept my attention all the way through, and, really makes you think of how tragedy affects each person differently. Will definitely be reading more by this author.;

Vickie N
Worth Fighting For by Lisa Niemi Swayze

5
This story of what Lisa and Patrick dealt with from his diagnosis until his death will grab your heart. If you have lost someone you will truly understand her pain and if you have been lucky to have not gone through the pain it will open your eyes to what a journey like that is like. Absolutely a fantastic book. You will smile a lot but there will also be tears. I just hope she continues to do well.

Okay for Now by Gary Schmidt

Very interesting and compelling book. Watching the characters developing and interacting with each other results in a book very hard to put down. Doug is a remarkable boy.

Next by Michael Crichton

2
Michael Crichton has always done a good job of intertwining science and fiction without writing science fiction. I think that makes sense. Here Crichton tackles the world of genetic engineering and while there were so many amazing ideas and concepts here, I’m not sure how much of a novel there actually is. There are literally dozens of characters introduced and as a reader you have no idea if they are connected, important, or relevant. Its strangely scattered and when connections are made they are disturbing weak or convenient. I was rather disappointed with this. There just wasn’t enough here.

Liz Koster
Catherine The Great. Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie

This books gives the reader an exciting peak into Czarist Russian. The shifting political alliances controlled by the monarchs was a world of intrigue and personal power.

I did not like this title as much as I do some of his others. It doesn't have much depth - would make a good beach read though.

Dreams of Joy by Lisa See

5
I hurried and read Shanghai Girls first since it was the continuation of the story, but you don't need to read the first one in order to follow. I absolutely fell in love the characters of Pearl, Joy, and May. This story was both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. It was the type of book I was sad to finish because I kept wanting more. Lisa See writes beautifully and I will be recommending this and Shanghai Girls to my Book Club

Dre
Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin

5
I'm almost finished reading this book, and am really liking it. Takes place switching between late 1970's to the present, in Mississippi. Manages to convey racial problems with out being preachy. I feel for most of the characters, even when you know some of them aren't good people.

Elizabeth Vollbach
ROAM by Alan Lazar

4
If you love animal books, particularly those about dogs, you’ll probably love ROAM by Alan Lazar. A curious dog roams too far from his “Great Love” (master) and just keeps roaming, encountering many different types of people along the way, always remembering his Great Love. It’s a darling story, and people who love animals usually are suckers for darling animal stories. I’m one of those people. So I loved the story. But I didn’t like the children’s storybook feel to it. It even has a storybook ending.

Tessa B
Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie

A BBC radio dramatization audio book. A good mystery wherein Hercule Poirot uses his "little grey cells" to solve the murder of a host who specifically invited a murderer (or several) to his home for dinner and cards.

After suffering through Son of Stone, this one was how Stone Barrington books should be - a little suspense, a dash of his charisma and all the characters we love (not to mention Stone's charm with all the ladies. A fun, quick read with a who-dunnit plot

Coral Harrison
The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen

4
This is a story about a small town. Willa Jackson at 33 years old is the main character. Her grandparent were rich but lost their money but before that her great-great grandfather built a large house called The Blue Ridge Madam the finest house in Walls of Water, North Carolina. She comes back to this town to live. She finds out that her old classmate Paxton Osgood is having it restored to its former glory. The house is done and they are fixing the yard when they find a skeleton under a peach tree. This makes for a very interesting story.

I liked this book. The author gave us a look into 3 family dynamics and how they connect and turn all of them into better people in the end.

Dianna Dyke
The Good Wife by Stewart O'Nan

3
This book could be a true story told by a wife who goes beyond her vows. This is one in the end that you hope more families strive to; even though it really is the hard road.

Karen Hamblett
Shadow of Gotham by Stefanie Pintoff

4
Edgar winning novel weaves early 1900's New York City history with a classic detective style mystery. The two main characters are a detective and a "newfangled" criminologist with two very different views about criminals - one thinks they can be saved and is researching how to do that and the other is obsessed with the victims and so is driven to bring them to justice. The story was beautifully told and held my attention to the very end.

Maggie
Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos

3
An interesting novel; present/past format works well in this novel. I've been drawn to others' writing where characters speak from the grave. Kallos does it well and goes further, interweaving thoughts on how the dead operate in the afterlife; nothing elaborate that takes over the story, but interesting stuff. Midwestern (NE) setting appealing to me; I'm a bit overdone of late with books set in the south; go figure, I was born & still live in IA! Overall, I'd say this book's configuration is a bit patchy but does hold together and offers a feel good ending with sadness understood as just a part of life.

Six-year-old Krissy Willis disappears from her school one afternoon when a stranger, masquerading as her mother, drives off with her. Casey Woods and her group of renegade investigators--known as Forensic Instincts--are hired by Krissy's mother to find her. What follows is an exciting, page-turner. It looks like this could be the beginning of a series about Forensic Instincts.

A re-telling of the first three chapters of the Biblical book of Hosea, and one of the best books I have ever read.

Wanted: Sisters of the Heart by Shelley Shepard Gray

2
Maybe I have read too many of this series in order, but I found this story too trite. The main family in the Sisters of the Heart series is the Brenneman family, owners of a Bed and Breakfast Inn in Ohio. In the first novel of the series, Anna has left her "English" life and has fallen in love with Henry Brenneman. In this book, Katie must accept her "wild" year before joining the Amish church and decide if Jonathan is her future. The stories all follow a simple formula that life is in God's hand. Each story ends "happily ever after". I guess that life is not that simplistic, and sometimes the ending is not rosy.

The Yucca Mountain Conspiracy by Terry L. Fitzwater

4
The second installment concerning APTA, The Agency for the Prevention of Terrorism in America. Special Agent James Link must find and prevent a nuclear explosion at a nuclear waste disposal site. The adventure takes his team around the world and on a covert mission into Iran to destroy a site manufacturing nuclear weapons. It follows the events of the first in this series, The Holy Triad where a terrorist faction enters the USA with stolen passports with events leading to Times Square on New Year's Eve.

Louise Pledge
Murder at the PTA by Laura Alden

5
Delightfully fun book that every mother can relate to. Beth Kennedy gets roped into being a PTA officer, when shortly afterward, the school principal is murdered. Since no one in town seemed to like her, it left a wide field of suspects. But Beth (with the help of her best friend) set out to find the culprit, herself. Lots of humor, and I’m looking forward to more books in the PTA series.

Louise
Sleeping with Ward Cleaver by Jenny Gardiner

3
Being fascinated with the cute title, I wanted to read this book for a long time and was excited when I found it on sale. I should have realized, though, from the title that it would be about something else you do in bed with your husband, besides sleeping. I didn’t finish it, because the plot seemed to be only about the “heroine” hating the boring & predictable sex with her Ward Cleaver-like husband.

Patty Bowen
The Drop by Michael Connelly

4
A very engaging plot form the first chapter onward! Harry Bosch is at his best!

Elaine Williams
Jessica Lost by Bunny Crumpacker and J.S. Picariello

5
This memoir is written by a mother who gave up a baby for adoption and the daughter who sought and located her birth mom when the mother is in her 60's and the daughter in her 40's. It tells both sides of a reunion over the course of thirteen years, a fulfilling friendship built as the two share their honest feelings with one another. Identifying and meeting the birth father was more complex and less satisfying. Commendably, it is not a "happily ever after" story, but rather an honest reflection from both parties. If, like me, you are interested in parent child reunions, this is an engaging and thoughtful book.

Kathrin Cipcich
The Leopard by Jo Nesbo

4
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series by Stieg Larsson has certainly peaked my interest in Scandinavian mystery thrillers. One result has been the discovery of the Jo Nesbo series featuring inspector Harry Hole. This Norwegian noir is certainly not for the squeamish reader - but the characters, plot, and sensational (but is it believable) crime will draw one in and not let go.

Louise Pledge
My Fairy Grandmother by Aubrey Mace, Cedar Fort and Inc.

5
This is the most unique and different story I remember ever having read. Kaitlin visits a grandma that she rarely sees and gradually coaxes a surreal saga of family history from her, the least of which is that there were real fairies in their family. The grandma’s mother was one, in fact. At first, I thought (like the granddaughter) that it was going to be a little too much, but I came to love the book, and also, like the granddaughter couldn’t wait for the next chapter. This is a good read for young people or any age and any gender, for that matter.

5
Successful life coach Madeline O'Shea is close to her sister, Annie, and her grandparents, whose long love and active sex life inspire her. But Madeline and her sister are both shaped by early abuse at the hands of their stepfather and two of his friends. When the young Madeline told her mother, who was terminally ill, the men were brought to trial. But they were handed a light sentence, so her mother shot them dead-right in the courtroom. Madeline has tried to bury the violent past, and the guilt she feels for failing to protect her sister from abuse, but the arrival of a reporter, who wants to write an "anniversary of the shooting" piece, brings it all back and tips off a blackmailer in possession of old photos taken by the molesters. This in turn prompts Madeline's grandfather to come clean about his own past and long-held lies that affect Madeline and her sister. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time!!

3
Someone who is crazy about romances might have given this 5 stars. The writing, itself, was good, but the plot has been used so many times and was pretty predictable. Successful career girl reluctantly leaves her big city home to return for a visit to small hometown. She longs to be back in the hustle and bustle of the city and misses her important position with a prestigious company. Of course, she falls in love with small hometown guy (policeman, no less) and decides that small town just might be more fulfilling than her big city life.

On December 21, 1988, a terrorist bomb exploded on Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Miriam Luby Wolf, age twenty, was one among thirty-five students of Syracuse (New York) University returning from a semester study program in London, England. All passengers and Pan Am flight crew members, as well as eleven Lockerbie citizens also died in that flight. About the loss of her only child, Rosemary Mild shares her soul with many words of which these are but a few: ‘Time heals and it doesn’t. The pain doesn’t fizz and disappear like an Alka Seltzer plopped into a glass of water. And I don’t expect it to.” I highly recommend Rosemary’s book to all readers; and to audiences who have suffered/are suffering a tragedy, a loss, and climbing the healing process. I urge you to add this book to your list of reading for 2012 (on shelves February 1, 2012. ‘Miriam’s World--and Mine’ is a profound, haunting, unforgettable story long after the last pages of the book are closed.

Debbie M
Winter's Awakening by Shelley Shepard Gray

3
Gray writes about 3-4 different series about Amish life, and I enjoy the Seasons in Sugarcreek the best. This series involves the Graber family of the parents and seven children. I enjoy the wisdom and understanding of the Graber parents. The story shows the hard life followed by the Amish community, but also shows the love, generosity, and devotion of this community. Lilly Allen is introduced in this book, and she will remain a character in the following books. Lilly is pregnant and unmarried, and needing friends. Joshua Graber befriends her, but his family worries that the friendship might be more passionate. Gretta is Joshua's intended wife, but Joshua goes through a period of unrest. One of my favorite characters is Judith Graber, the hard working, but levelheaded 17-year-old daughter. Judith does not judge people and readily accepts Lilly.

All Fall Down by Carlene Thompson

5
I’m a fan of Carlene Thompson so save her books as a treat. Recovering from surgery, I decided I deserved one of her treats. I found it a little slow in the beginning, but it quickly picked up as a young widow is once again accused of a murder on her property.

Fade to Black by Wendy Corsi Staub

5
This book had me from hello (would give more than 5 stars, if possible). Elizabeth Baxter was once “America’s Sweetheart”, a very popular movie star. However, after an attempt on her life and other scary, related experiences, she found it necessary to fake her death and start a new life in a small town across the country from Hollywood. As she fears sudden happenings, five years after assuming a new identity, the reader will fear right along with her. Someone has, apparently, found her, and she feels the urgent need to run again. However, before she can get away, things happen to thwart her plan.

This book definitely kept me on my toes and peaking out my own windows. Gardner is a great author!

Julie Holden
In the Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming

5
I consider myself a fairly avid mystery reader, so I sure don't know how I have missed out on this well written series for the past ten years. I was thoroughly impressed and enjoyed my first Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne novel. I like to begin a series at the beginning, so like Clare, the new priest at the local Episcopalian church, I didn't know quite what to expect of Millers Kill, NY. Turns out trouble and evil lurk in the small communities of the world as they do in the big cities and it's not long before Clare is embroiled in an abandoned baby/murder case with the local police. From the very start of the book, I had to keep going back to the story, reading chapter to chapter, hardly knowing where would be a good place to stop. I look forward to continuing the series-- the characters, the dialog and setting are so skillfully rendered. Fans of Louise Penny will probably appreciate Julia Spencer-Fleming's attention to detail.

In this very unique book, Hesser presents 'a collection of essays from the New York Times'. Through these essays, writers present their memories from various locales relating to food. Tessa B
When the Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe

2
First sentence: "Papa explains the war like this: 'When the elephants dance, the chickens must be careful.'” I first picked up this book because of the title and this opening line. The elephants in this tale are the Japanese and Americans fighting over the Philippines. The Filipinos are the chickens. The novel takes place during WWII, towards the end of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The Filipinos had suffered greatly during those three years of occupation. They were starving, and subject to being picked up by the Japanese, seemingly at random, only to be tortured or killed. The book focuses on an extended family living in the basement of an apparently abandoned house. They venture out, one or two at a time, only to forage for food or medicine. To comfort themselves and each other they tell stories – sometimes traditional Filipino folk tales, and sometimes stories from their own past. These are intended to help each other understand and endure their situation, or to teach a lesson they will need to survive. It’s an interesting idea and it could have been a really good book, but Holthe just wasn’t quite up to the task. The basic plot of the family’s enduring/surviving the occupation is a riveting one, and Holthe really shines in those sections of the book. However, it seems she was trying too hard to impress, or that she was determined to include every possible Filipino tradition and folk tale in an effort to educate the reader about her parents’ homeland. When she interrupts the plot line to tell another story, she loses momentum, and the attention of the reader.

Interesting, compelling read.

Marcia Sailer
One Second After by William Forstchen

5
This was a fascinating and scary look at what could happen in America if attacked by a bomb going off in the atmosphere which would knock out all computer systems. We are so dependent on computers, we would be left basically helpless. It is the story of a family, their town, and the surrounding community and how they come together to stay alive in such a situation. It's not a sunny story, but certainly provides a lot of fodder for thought.

Louise Pledge
Alone by Lisa Gardner

5
What if you do if you’re a professional sniper, watching from a window across the way, when a husband who has been known to be abusive has a gun pointed at his wife (with their young child in the room), and you see him start to pull the trigger? This is the situation that State Trooper Bobby Dodge found himself in. The snap decision he makes will cause a lot of repercussions. This is the first of Lisa Gardner’s books in which D.D. Warren makes an appearance.

A former mayor of a lakeside town wants to buy and run a old inn. Her daughter has left to live with her father so its the perfect time, she has it all planned out, and then along came a snag. Someone from her past returns to town, buys the inn and now her dream has been shattered. Of course he wants to hire her to run the inn but she feels that she is just settling for half of her dream. Of course she SLOWLY or should I say denies that she is falling in love with him. Many lives connect with everyone in this town. I would have given this 4 stars but I became frustrated when this tale just dragged on sometimes.

On Founder's Day, Harrison Black, owner of At Wick's End, has a stand near Gretel Barnett. When she's killed in the middle of the festivities--and folks start suspecting Harrison -- he must figure out who extinguished his biggest rival. This one wasn't very good in my opinion --- story was just like all the other ones! And any guy that gives a shit about candle making must have a few screws loose! Took me forever to read and was boring!

When Gertie and her cohorts decide to do their court-ordered community service at the local assisted living home during the Christmas season, they get more than they (plea) bargained for. I'm glad I found Deb Baker (a new author to me), have read all her books now and am eagerly awaiting new ones!

Forgiven by Shelley Shepard Gray

3
In this Sisters of the Heart series, the barn of Jonathan Lundy burns and his sister, Winnie suffers burns and fractures. Jonathan must know who caused this accident, even though the Bishop of the community rules to forgive and forget. While Winnie mends in the hospital, Sam Miller visits her. Sam left the Amish community to pursue a career as a college professor. On a third level, Anna and Henry prepare for their wedding. Many stories converge to the final chapter. The main emphasis of this story rests on the shoulders of the men and the decisions they must make to follow the rules of the Amish community. The book shows that life is not always rosy, but with God's assistance life can be a blessing.

A Dose of Murder by Lori Avocato

5
This is a completely delightful and funny mystery of a promising new author to me! The series features a sassy 30–something ex–nurse turned medical insurance fraud investigator. She even has her master degree in nursing but when it comes to insurance fraud she has a lot to learn. The characters who are in this series are quite different. I even chuckled aloud a couple of time! Will look for more by Lori Avodato!

Roam by Alan Lazar

5
A sweet but simple tale, Lazar’s novel will appeal to animal lovers nostalgic for the stories of their youth." —Booklist. This book is a true treasure!! Fifteen years ago when we moved into our current home, I gave away all my read books (and two rooms full later) decided that I would NOT keep any books but the dictionary and the Bible as books to be re-read! But, this one I will keep forever! The story is more than just the story of a dog --- Alan has done a lot of research into the “dog family” along with putting his soul into this book! It’s also the first hardback book I’ve read that came with music (and the music is lovely)! I enjoyed every page of this book; it brought back all the love my dogs have given me all my life and a better understanding of their love to me. It’s just a treasure and not written just for dog lovers! Everyone about to purchase a dog should read it, just touched my soul with more love! Thank you Alan!

The Wake of Forgiveness by Bruce Machart

4
The story starts with a baby boy being born and the mother dies. The rest of the story centers around this very moment and this boy growing up without a mother and raised with his three brothers by their father. A very strict father who doesn't get over his wife's death. A book that will make you laugh and cry and even upset over things that happen during this boy's life. One of my favorites so far this year.

George's Candy by George Ratz

5
George's Candy is about RESCUE, DEATH AND LOVE in Vietnam. This was truly an amazing adventure and, I enjoyed the book --- considering it is nothing I would even look at, if I just saw it sitting on a shelf! Towards the end of the book there was probably, maybe one too many adventure but most informative! Could not put it down once I started it! Good read and would look for more of George Ratz books!

Forget to Remember by Alan Cook

5
Carol Golden isn't her real name. She doesn't remember her real name or anything that happened before she was found in a Dumpster, naked and unconscious, in Southern California. A very intriguing and entertaining mystery, the first I've read by this author, though he has written several books. Alan Cook knows how to engage his readers and keep them guessing. This book has a lot of interesting detail, the unraveling of the mystery of Carol's identity and the final outcome bringing the book to a fast-paced, exciting and surprising conclusion. A well-plotted story I really enjoyed.

A string of murders catches Charlene into a never-ending mystery, full of colorful characters with intriguing - and sometimes dangerous - pasts. As Charlene tries to get to the bottom of what is happening, each time she gets one question answered, several more pop up. I enjoyed this unpredictable page-turner. This is a delightfully fun read, filled with intrigue, humor, and a dash of romance - a great combination for a cozy murder mystery! A real quick read!

HIDE by Lisa Gardner

5
I hurried to read this before the movie was shown on TV. I was disappointed in the movie but, definitely, not in the book! Bobby Dodge and D.D Warren end up working together again to find a killer who has taken young girls to a large underground room, killed them, tagged their bodies and left them to be discovered many years later. But he may not be through killing yet. A very fascinating story as new clues keep appearing.

Shiver by Lisa Jackson

5
This is an older book written by Lisa Jackson but her books are always good. Shiver is the perfect name for this book as you will keep checking to see if your doors are locked and the shades drawn. Abby Chastain lives in a wooded area outside New Orleans and feels eyes watching her. She draws her shades hoping to keep out the evil she feels is watching. This murderer has caused the deaths of several people and Detective Reuben Montoya believes the deaths are connected to Abby in some way. While a child, Abby witnessed the death of her mother as she fell from her room in a mental hospital. Now this hospital is closed but Abby feels she must see the room again. As she walks the halls of the deserted building, she feels that she is not alone. Will she be next?

Iron House by John Hart

5
This was the first book by John Hart that I have read and it deserves more than 5 stars. Now I plan to read his other books. This one kept you reading with an engrossing story. When two babies are found by an icy stream by hunters, they are taken to the local orphanage. There they endure years of torment before one is adopted. The younger boy is adopted by a senator and his wife and lives in luxury while the older boy ran away to New York and is befriended by a mob boss. But to earn his keep, he becomes the old man's enforcer. When the boys finally meet, the years have not really changed them. A great story.

FBI Agent Sean Reilly receives an urgent call from a former lover Michelle Martinez. Armed men had broken into her home and killed her boyfriend. When Sean gets to her, he finds they are being pursued by Hispanic men. Why are they trying to get Michelle? Or is it Sean? This reminds him of a botched job the FBI and DEA had undertaken in Mexico where Sean had to kill the person they had come to retrieve. Does that have anything to do with current events?

This is a new series for Gray. This series is called the Families of Honor series and deals with individuals facing life-challenging issues. Mrs. Kimble by Jennifer Haigh

4
I got this book when it was offered at a discounted Kindle price about a month ago. It started off pretty depressing, but the story developed interestingly, and I ultimately wanted to keep reading to find out how it all turned out. The story was more about Mr. Kimble than the Mrs. Kimble(s), so the choice of title was intriguing. Mr. Kimble is the central character of the story, and his story is an interesting one to follow. I wouldn't highly recommend this book over other books I've read, but it did hold my interest and was a satisfying read. I would have given it 3-1/2 stars if the rating allowed that designation but I didn't want to give it three stars since it did hold my interest.

The Arranger by L. J. Sellers

4
The setting is twenty years from now and the book is classified as a "futuristic thriller". Except some high-tech Olympic type games, the story could actually have taken place at any time in the past or present. The writer interestingly has two time frames going at the same time and cleverly brings them together in the end.

House Rules by Jodi Picoult

5
I have had this book in my IPOD since it was first published. I am just getting it read, and I am so glad I have finally gotten around to reading/listening to it. It is an incredible look into the life of a family with an autistic child who has Asperger syndrome. I do not know anyone with an autistic child, but Jodi Piccoult has always done her homework in the books that she writes. If she has followed suit with this book in terms of the behavior patterns of an Asperger child being true to life, then this book will help others understand the syndrome and hopefully find compassion as well.

Vicki Cochran
Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts

5
I love reading Nora Roberts books, but this was one of her best! It kept me guessing about who was doing wrong until the end of the book. I never thought about the people who fire jump, and this book was so interesting. I would hope Ms. Roberts would continue on with this story so her fans could visit again.

5
Death narrates the story of Liesel, a 10-year-old girl living in 1939 Nazi Germany. Words fascinate her and, upon learning to read, she begins stealing books - either grabbed from a burning pile set afire by the Nazi soldiers or stolen from the Mayor's home. The neighborhood is populated with bigger than life characters and Liesel charms them with stories. But it is wartime and death is always ready to steal another soul. The strong messages are understanding others and learning to love.

The Winter Palace by Eva Stachniak

3
The Winter Palace tells of Catherine the Great's rise to become Empress of Russia through the eyes of her servant and eventual confidante, Varvara. I received this book from Random House Reader's Circle, and since I am not a big fan of historical fiction, I probably would not have read it otherwise. I did enjoy the book, and found it an easy read--Stachniak is skillful as she provides the reader just enough Russian history without slowing the story. The novel is filled with secrets and behind-the-scenes intrigue as Varvara fulfills her role as "tongue" or spy. The vicious palace politics make quite an interesting story.

I received this Advanced Reader Copy prior to its June publication. Women of the Silk by Gail Tsukiyama

4
This book takes place in China between 1909 and 1938. A young girl of about 7 or 8 lives with her parents and 2 sisters outside a small village. Their income is dependent upon a crop of mulberry leaves and fish. When these crops are greatly reduced and hard times befall the family, the father takes the daughter to the larger community of Yung Kee, and leaves her with no goodbye, to work in a silk factory. The book is told from Pei's point of view and from this one learns much of the silk industry, China's treatment of girls and women and the invasion by the Japanese. A most intriguing book with sadness and joy mixed together along with history.

This latest book by Koryta is another good one. Lincoln is approached by an ex-convict who wants him to find out what happened to a woman who had helped him when he got out of prison. Joe plays a small part in Lincoln's endeavor.

Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo

I received this book for Christmas and was not sure that it was one that I wanted to read. I was pleasantly surprised. I loved it. It is a short non-fiction written by a pastor of a Nebraska church. I think most anyone would like it no matter their religion or lack of religion.

Haven't quite finished it. A story of how the author copes with the loss of her daughter after she has already lost her husband. People cope in different ways and it interests me.

This is similar to Shutter Island in that you are never sure what is true or false. The novel keeps you guessing until the very end!

Pandor's Key by Nancy Richardson Fischer

4
Pleasantly surprised. This book is my high school book club pick of the month YA. Having never jumped on board with Harry Potter or Twilight, I found Pandora's Key Trilogy very enjoyable. It has everything good books need. With enough mystery and suspense, it is deffinitly a page turner. Nancy Richardson Fischer is a very readable author, she also likes to be intouch with her readers. She is willing to skype conference with my book club. Yeah! Nancy

Toni Saunders
Zero Day by David Baldacci

3
I've enjoyed several books by David Baldacci, so I had high hopes for Zero Day. The new character, Puller, is too one dimensional to be interesting. The plot is slow, predictable, and repetitive. I listened to the audio tapes and the female reader was terrible. She sounded like a bored Peggy Hill. I hope Baldacci doesn't revisit this character.

Linda Williams
The Hunter by John Lescroart

5
I love all John Lescroart's books. This one is about Hunter and his exploits as a private investigator. Well-developed characters, good storyline. Hope he follows this one up with another with Hunt as the lead character!

Sergeant Rex: The Unbreakable Bond Between A Marine And His Military Working Dog by Mike Dowling

5
A wonderfully moving story of courage, love and sacrifice. Marine Mike Dowling and his military K9 Rex are deployed to Iraq for six months. They are there to help locate IEDs, weapons caches and suicide bombers. In the 130 degree heat they both face combat conditions for the very first time. Military K9 dogs have not been used in war since Vietnam, so they are the guinea pigs, paving the way for the other K9 units that will follow. I'm not a big fan of stories of war, but I am a big fan of our military and dogs. I was curious to find out what a K9 unit actually did in the military so I picked this book up. I was riveted and emotionally invested. Every time they went on patrol I could feel their anxiety, their fear, the relief when it was done. Mike Dowling is man and Marine enough to fill his book with pride and love for Rex. Semper Fidelis.

I really like this book because it keeps your interest. The author brings the book to life with the believable characters.

Mr. CSI by Anthony E. Zuiker

5
This is an autobiography that is fascinating and shows in an interesting manner the progression of one's life. Anthony had no idea what he wanted to do in life and had many menial jobs and lived on the edge of financial ruin for decades. The twists and turns of an individual life is exemplified in this book. A read that is interesting and inspiring.

5
I am almost done with this and can't rave about it enough! I learned so much about life in Nigeria. The characters are so real! I'd recommend this book without reservation to anyone who likes to learn. It's strong in both character and plot development.

Fatal Error by J. A. Jance

3
Am still fighting my way through a slow start to what I know will be a fun read if I can stick with it. The premise is interesting, but I'm about a quarter in and still haven't been hooked. Since Jance is one of my favorites I'm willing to keep trying a little bit longer.

A great book about how a woman who has been totally self-sufficient adjusts to her illness of left neglect.

Julie
The Leopard by Joe Nesbo

5
I'm halfway through this novel and it's really gripping. Nesbo really makes you feel like your actually in the dank, dark alleys in Hong Kong. His main character, Harry Hole is, to me, very likeable and raw and exciting at the same time. I think I have found a replacement for Stieg Larsson.

We the Animals by Justin Torres

This is more a novella than a novel at only 128 pages. But it's short on size but huge in effect. Beautifully written.

The Glass Room by Simon Mawer

4
This is a beautifully written book that takes place in Czechoslovakia before, during and after the invasion of the Nazis. The very wealthy Landauer family build an amazing and very modern home from which they must evacuate because Viktor Landauer is a Jew. Their beautiful home slips from Czech to Nazi to Soviet possession. The Glass Room is a very special place and all who enter this home fall under its spell. "Brimming with barely contained passion and cruelty, the precision of science, the wild variance of lust, the catharsis of confession and the fear of failure ---the Glass Room has it all."

Louise Pledge
The Infinite Atonement by Tad R. Callister

5
Slower reading than my usual novels but well worth the time. I didn’t realize there was that much to learn about Christ’s atonement. I gleaned a lot of new information and found the book very thought-provoking. I am, also, more thankful to my Savior, Jesus Christ, as I realize more and more just how much He gave in my behalf.

Little Girl Gone by Drusilla Campbell

4
Although the premise creeped me out, I found myself really enjoying this book. I won it in an on-line contest. I found the characters interesting and flawed. I really appreciated the dog, a pit bull named Foo, and the rich orphan. I look forward to reading more books by the author!

Susan DeVos
Left Neglected by Lisa Genova

5
This is an insightful glimpse into a life of someone with left neglect, a brain injury where the brain does not recognize anything on its left including the left half of the body. Although it is a novel, the author has a special talent for making it seem real. It you enjoyed her book Still Alice, you will like this one as well.

Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder

5
This book has really touched my heart. It is the true story of a young man from Burundi named Deo. He escaped Burundi in the midst of the Hutsi/Tutsi civil war. He saw horrible slaughter before arriving in the U.S. While in New York City he endured many hardships before finding people who helped him continue his studies to become a doctor. I admire this man's courage and strength.

The Drop by Michael Connelley

5
Another great addition to the series on Detective Harry Bosch. First he is given the cold case of a murdered young girl and a suspected convicted serial killer. The results that Harry digs up on this case are astounding. He also is working a current case of a man who falls off a balcony in a hotel and is killed. It looks like a suicide, but is it? Connelley's books are always page-turners, and I haven't found a bad one in his whole long list of published books.

Rita Marks
Agent 6 by Tom Rob Smith

4
This is the final book in Tom Rob Smith's trilogy featuring former KGB agent Leo Deminov. The book covers the years 1949 to 1980 and takes the reader from Moscow to Afghanistan, to Pakistan, to the United States and finally back to Moscow. The writing is strong and the story a compelling tale of control by fear and threat. This is not an easy read, but well worth the effort.

The Boy In The Suitcase by Lene Kaaberbol and Agnette Friis

5
An absorbing story of a three-year old boy found in a suitcase in a locker at a railroad station. How he got there and why is fascinating. Many evil people involved, as well as courageous people who try to help the boy. Lots of twists and turns and does not come together until the very end.

The Drop by Michael Connelly

5
Harry Bosch is nearing retirement, but he is involved in two cases at the same time. The strangest is that the DNA from a sex crime points to a person who would have been only eight when the crime was committed. In the other, Harry is pulled into an apparent suicide case. The victim is the son of an influential councilman who wants Harry to find out the truth. Is Harry being set up?

Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey by Lady Carnarvon

3
This is an interesting book about Highclere Castle from the 1890's to the 1930's, and the family presiding in this English landmark. The family living in this castle is the Carnarvons, and the story centers on Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. The story begins with Almina Wombwell, the illegitimate daughter of Alfred de Rothschild, preparing to marry the 5th Earl of Carnarvon. The story centers on Almina and the Earl, and briefly tells of the vast number of servants. The lifestyle is lavish with money provided by Alfred de Rothschild. The amazing stories involve Almina's generosity with providing a hospital for wounded soldiers during WWI. Almina supplied nurses and doctors and food and board for these men at her own expense. Almina's husband, Lord Carnarvon, provided the money and time for the excavation and exploration of King Tut's Tomb. The current Lady Carnarvon wrote the book. Many times the endless names of family and friends and events seemed massive. I would have enjoyed a timetable of events and maybe a family genealogy.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

3
The Night Circus shows up with no warning and is gone in the same way. The book follows those who work for the night circus and those who don't see how dangerous their role in the night circus is. The two main characters are in a battle against each other to see who can out-magic the other - what they don't realize is they must out-magic each other to the death, which sucks because they are in love.

Francisca E B
Tinkers by Paul Harding

4
A luminously written meditative novel. An old man lies on his death bed and recalls vignettes from his life and that of his father. The novel’s “plot” moves about without attention to chronology. There are long passages of philosophical musing. One incredible sentence is nearly a page long. This is definitely a novel for the serious reader who relishes contemplation. There is no great action, no compelling story arc, no mystery, no thrill. Yes, things happen in the lives of three generations of Crosby men, but the focus is on their thought processes not on action. The language is brilliant – sensual and vivid, rich and mellifluous. I kept reading passages aloud to anyone who would listen. I found it compelling and moving, an exploration of time, love, loss, disappointment, and the beauty of nature.

Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum

4
I finally picked this out of my "books to read" pile and was so happy I did. Blum grants the reader some omniscience, which makes the main character's struggles all the more poignant. The author's research and craft as a writer are evident throughout.

The Garner Files by James Garner

3
A slim book, but full of Garner's reminiscing about his life and career. I remember watching him in Maverick in the late 60s and loving him and his character (to the point that I was disappointed when Jack Kelley as Bart Maverick was on rather than Bret). Garner tells it like he sees it and he is not a prima dona. My only disappointment was that I listened to this book and he was not the narrator. It did make me want to see how many James Garner videos I can secure through my library.

Trista Casey
Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

4
A captivating story about a child adopted in India by American parents. It is told from the perspective of many characters. As the author stated in her own words, these perspectives show that the human spirit has good intentions for the most part yet other factors often come into play. The book didn't end the way that I thought it would but I appreciated the story. I also learned a lot about Indian culture. This would make a great book club selection as there are many interesting discussion points.

The Best of Times by Penny Vincenzi

I really enjoyed this book by London writer Penny Vincenzi. It is about the chain reactions that occur after a terrible traffic accident and how characters' lives intersect from that tragedy. The characters are fully formed and a lot of fun to follow.

A Grownup Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson

4
Love Joshylin Jackson's books, the characters draw you in and its like you are there watching from the sidelines. A Grownup Kind of Pretty does not disappoint. Three generations living together trying to get past the 15 yr "curse" they each believe all the Slocum girls fall to. But then a small trunk is found buried in the backyard under the weeping willow and their lives are changed forever, and for Mosey, just maybe the curse is not meant for her.

Mallory's Oracle by Carol O'Connell

3
Kathleen Mallory was a homeless juvenile delinquent when Louis Markowitz and his wife Helen took her in. Now she is a policewoman who tries to solve the murder of Markowitz. This is a good story but at times, I couldn't figure out just what was going on. It may have been my inadequacy but I would have liked for it to be a bit more clear.

The Girl in the LIghthouse by Roxane Tepfer Sanford

3
I was disappointed in this read. I was expecting Lighthouse information and stories --- she knew how to do everything but no details - story started off good but then just went off into another whole adventure. Was truly disappointed that this is the first of three books and you really have to have all three to finish the story. Had I known that when I started it, I wouldn't have bothered with it!

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

3
My nephew wants to see the film and I subsequently learned the novella is considered a classic ghost story. Meh. It has all the usual hallmarks of a traditional Gothic tale, ghostly visions/sounds, haunted house, burial ground, family secrets, stormy weather, isolation, things that go bump in the night etc etc. If I had discovered this book on my own I would have liked it more as I suffered a serious case of hyped-up word of mouth anticipation.

Beth Brackins
Cross Currents by John Shors

5
John Shors is one of my favorite authors. His novels are all so exotic and marvelous. His latest, Cross Currents, takes place on a small island off the coast of Thailand. The novel is about the Asian tsunami, but is so much more than that. Great characters, vivid writing, and a powerful story. I loved it.

Lois Lilling
Curiosity by Joan Thomas

3
The scientific aspects were very interesting and introduced me to paleontology. I also enjoyed the interplay between Mary and Henry. Unfortunately, class divisions interfered with their relationship as I thought they were perfect for each other. The book was beautifully written and poetic at times.

Linda Johnson
Packing for Mars by Mary Roach

4
Fascinating look into the preparations for space travel that affect everyday life, but we probably wouldn't think of without Mary Roach delving into these matters. Remember you need gravity to urinate and defecate. The book isn't all about topics which would get a junior high-schooler chuckling. Very interesting told very well. The narrator was ideal.

Harriet Stay
The Wreckage by Michael Robotham

5
Michael Robotham doesn't write a series, per se. He incorporates recurring characters, sometimes in minor roles, which still allows the reader to keep current with their lives. I've loved all of his books but this one really zings. It took me by surprise when the story opens in Baghdad. Then off to London, alternating chapters, but just when I was settled into worrying about two sets of characters, a third pops in. The chapter headings kept me from getting lost. Pulitzer prize winning foreign correspondent Luca Terracini moves into dangerous territory while investigating a bank robbery, a fire, and murder. To compound the situation, it is discovered that billions of U.S. funds sent for rebuilding infrastructure are disappearing. In calmer London, I found retired police Inspector Vincent Ruiz (my favorite character) about to walk his daughter down the aisle, but not before he finds himself in a pack of trouble. The third setting involves eight-months pregnant Elizabeth North searching for her missing husband. If you're wondering how all these relate, you'll need to read this and discover how ingeniously Robotham weaves them together. It was a compelling story, skillfully told with fully realized characters. It doesn't get any better!

Very Bad Men by Harry Dolan

4
This is the second in a new mystery series, BAD THINGS HAPPEN being his first. I was delighted with both, but recommend you start with the first one. David Loogan is now editor of Gray Streets Magazine in Ann Arbor, MI, and he accepts unsolicited short stories. He finds just such a manuscript at his door, no authorship noted, about three murders, one of which has not happened --- yet. No more hints. You will enjoy these. I'd give it a five except for one aspect I found wanting. I've never seen a clear picture of Loogan's girl friend, Elizabeth. She's still a partial fog. I expected by the second book it would right itself, but not.

Thirteen Hours by Deon Meyer

5
Thinking back about how much action is packed into thirteen hours, beginning at 05:36 in Cape Town, South Africa, I was exhausted and thrilled with the story, the complexity, and can fully understand how the primary police inspectors had to work at keeping their tempers at bay. Inspector Benny Griessel not only had his temper in check, but persists in his fight to overcome his addiction to alcohol. He is suddenly thrust into a mentoring position to several new inspectors, two with murder cases to solve. Trust me, you will know these characters intimately, cheer some on, want to whack some, as I'm sure Benny does at times, wish they'd get on with their job or get out of his way. What creates the unstoppable momentum to this is following in the footsteps of an American backpacker fleeing for her life from the same men responsible for her friend's murder. Besides being shortlisted for the CWA International Dagger, it received Best Thriller Award at the World Mystery Convention (Bouchercon), which means both experts and fans loved this, as did I.

Outrage by Arnaldur Indridason

2
If you haven't joined the crowds of readers enjoying Indridason's Detective Erlunder series set in Iceland, primarily Reykjavik, let me recommend you read the earlier ones translated by Bernard Scudder and then Victoria Cribb. This was my least favorite, and I worry about the quality of the future translations if this was an example. It felt stilted and amateurish but to top it off, Erlunder does not head the investigation. He's taken a few days off, which turn into weeks. And what happened to the rest of his detective team? It seems Elinborg, now heading a murder investigation, has a penchant for cooking and writing cookbooks. Pages and pages are wasted on food descriptions, plus I discovered I didn't like her. I had to think back because it's been at least two years since the last Erlunder book. Even Sigurdur Oli I found excessively aggressive. This was a strange book, not the Indridason I've previously enjoyed.

The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen - translator Lisa Hartford

5
What a compelling story; it's beautifully written and kudos to the English translator Lisa Hartford. To begin, I wasn't sure how I felt about crotchety Homicide Detective Carl Morck, but over time he begins to grow on you. The question for Homicide Chief Marcus Jacobsen and his deputy is what to do with a pain-in-the-butt detective who has just returned to duty after being shot, a partner killed, and another paralyzed. The answer was like manna from heaven, a new division was created, Department Q, and Carl was placed in charge. But, in fact, they planned to just forget about Carl Morck. That changed and he was assigned a helper, Hafez El-Assad, who was given all the cleaning chores but, over time, turned into a first-rate detective in his own right while adding a touch of humor to the story. As the title implies, Morck and Assad begin to examine a five-year-old unsolved case involving a Danish Democrats' vice-chairperson, Merte Lynggard, who disappeared from a ferry in the Baltic traveling to Germany. Accident? Suicide? Or Murder? Her body has never surfaced. From the opening chapter the reader knows Lynggard is still alive, but for how long? The clock is ticking.

Garnethill by Denise Mina

5
This was the first in a trilogy and a first mystery novel. It received the CWA John Creasey Award for the Best First Crime Novel. I'm planning to find the next two, EXILE and RESOLUTION. Maureen O'Donnell becomes the primary suspect in the murder of her lover, Douglas Brady. Even her mother believes she's guilty. Doug's body was found in Maureen's living room. And besides, it hasn't been that long since Maureen was released from a psychiatric hospital. Set in Glasgow, Scotland, Denise Mina tells her story through the many characters who inhabit Maureen's life. The police think either Maureen or her brother must be the guilty party, after all, who else had a key to the apartment. Summing it up now, thinking through all the elements and basic plot, it all seems so simplistic, but it was marvelously written. Mina is one of those special writers who has command of the language plus insight of human behavior. Bravo! Great first novel.

Soft Target by Stephen Hunter

2
I keep reading Stephen Hunter and the only justification I can give is I like his characters. The basis for his stories are good, too, but I think if THAT story had been given to another writer, I would have enjoyed it much more. I was going to say "everyone would have enjoyed it more" but I don't like to include other people's opinions in mine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I keep trying to figure out what it is I don't like about his books and I think it's the dialogue. He seems to write like a 15 year old boy who's jacked up on bang, bang, shoot 'em up. Yes, I know Ray and Bob are heroes. Do we have to keep repeating it? I find myself skipping over multiple paragraphs to get back to the story. I know Bob is a backwoods southerner but geez - the dialogue. I think I have to let Stephen Hunter go. As much as I like his characters and his basic stories, for me - they're ruined by the dialogue the author writes.

Now You See Her by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge

3
I don't know about anyone else but every time I see a famous author "backing off" the writing and getting someone else to co-author, I'm pretty sure the book will not be up to snuff. THIS is not James Patterson. Perhaps Mr. Ledwidge did more of the writing than Patterson. This isn't up to Patterson standards. It's more a quick, so-so read.

Full Black by Brad Thor

5
Just recently found Brad Thor and glad I did. Another really good writer to add to the list. This book frightened me. At the front, there is a paragraph that reads: The attacks as well as the strategy in this novel are based upon a disturbing blueprint designed to assist in and encourage the destruction of America. This blueprint, entitled Unrestricted Warfare, is real. You scared now? This book was really well-written and brought to the forefront, for me at least, the awareness of how many really scary people there are out there that want to do harm to the US. There's a lot of truth to what he writes and Thor and I share some of the same thoughts.

Mary Saputo
Breaking Silence by Linda Castillo

4
I really enjoyed this one even though I had a "hunch" about "who did it." Was still somewhat surprised. As one reviewer said - for a small town, they sure have a lot of crime. I think, in reality, if the Amish are/were picked on this much, I'd join a new religion. Enjoy the relationship between Kate and Tomasetti and glad that nothing has happened to end it.

Mary Saputo
Against All Enemies by Tom Clancy and Peter Telep

3
I haven't finished this book but I just felt I had to say this. There are so many characters it's hard to keep them straight. You just start getting into one character and the next chapter is someone else with more characters introduced. And the size - WOW! It was a little daunting when I saw it. I do find it interesting but like I said - mucho confusing. Now that I've finished it, the story itself was a good one but the superfluous writing was a bit much. Do I really need to know how a gun works? Do I really need to know EVERY detail of his past life? I say, cut to the chase. 700+ plus pages is a bit much. Worth reading it all? I'm a bit skeptical. Another well known writer with help from someone else. Or should I say, an unknown writer with help from a well know. Whatever. Again, it just doesn't work.

When I think of what it must be to write a book, I'm sure it would be beyond me to do so, even though I'm an avid reader. It's always great to find another really good writer and that is so in the case of Adam Mitzner. The story was original and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm glad you took the chance, Mr. Mitzner. Great job!

An Available Man by Hilma Wolitzer

5
The central story about Edward, a 62 year old widow, and his re-entry into the dating world is engaging, funny, and filled with characters we could know in our everyday lives. Hilma Wolitzer really gets across to the reader "life" after the death of a much loved spouse and how one must be emotionally ready and available before engaging in a relationship again. Wolitzer's wit and wisdom in her depiction of family members struggling with their psychological and emotional realities is perfect. The picture the author shows of social manners in today's world for the middle-aged seeking love is both empathic and hilarious. I enjoyed every page of this book.

The Language of Sand by Brett Ellen Block

Interesting novel, nice character study, but I wasn't happy with the ending - it is left too open. I would assume for a sequel.

Classic story about orphan boy being raised by a cruel sister. His desire to become a prosperous gentleman leads him to make some bad decisions and shun people who have tried to help him.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

So far it's amazing! There's been a lot of hype so I won't say too much. Wonderful detail given to a plot filled with magic, chemistry, love and mystery. I can't put it down. A truly mesmerizing read.

Melina Smith
Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante

5
Turn of Mind is an extremely well-written story of a woman doctor with Alzheimers who is suspected in the murder of her best friend. Full of lucId and confused episodes, you will be engaged until the finish. A truly great read.

Deal Breaker by Harlan Coben

5
I have read Harlan Coben in the past and enjoyed the fact that there was no graphic sex in his books. When I wrote to express my feelings, he agreed that he doesn’t want it in his books. So I went ahead and purchased all of the Myron Bolitar series. To my dismay, this first of the series was laden with disgusting language, which made me sorry that I had bought the rest of them. However, the plot was great, and Coben is the consummate writer, so I had to give it 5 stars. In other words, if you can get past the language, you will really like Deal Breaker.

Myron Bolitar is a rather unique sports agent. Many of his clients seem to find themselves in trouble, and this time is no exception.

Fade Away by Harlan Coben

5
Myron Bolitar, sports agent for the stars, was once a famous basketball player, himself. His NBA career, however, was sidelined by an on-court injury. Years later, he is hired to play professional ball again, as a way to get an inside track on why the team’s star player has gone missing. Lots of twists and turns along the way till the real truth is revealed.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

5
I bought this book shortly after it came out but didn’t read it till my daughter told me she was starting it, deciding we might as well read it at the same time, then we could discuss it. I was a little bored right at first, but as I got into it, I realized what wisdom it contained. When my husband asked me what it was about, I told him it was, basically, a psychology book. And that’s pretty much what it is: psychology lessons from a dog. Really a marvelous story which will give one much pause for thought.

Inside by Brenda Novak

5
I’m always so excited when there’s a new Brenda Novak trilogy, and this one was no exception. Virgil Skinner was falsely imprisoned for fourteen years (found guilty of murder). When he was exonerated he traded a promise for protection for his sister & children for an agreement to infiltrate another prison to expose a notorious prison gang. Suspenseful moments are interspersed with romantic moments, as the reader is on pins and needles waiting for the book to end.

In Seconds by Brenda Novak

5
The second in the Bulletproof Series, “In Seconds” focuses on the sister of Virgil Skinner (hero of the previous story). Laurel and her two children had been under police protection, but an insider had given her away. The marshall protecting her was murdered, & she & her children almost were. Therefore, she ran without police help & without letting any law authorities know where they were. Presently, living in Montana, she lives in constant fear of being found. This book was as chillingly suspenseful as the first... maybe even more.

In Close by Brenda Novak

5
The final story in the Bulletproof Series is told. Claire, Laurel’s close friend, is featured this time, as she is still engrossed in an investigation of her mother’s disappearance fifteen years before. The year before, Claire’s husband had been killed in an “accident”. Could there be a connection between the two? PS: I, particularly, enjoyed the dedication of this book :)

The Snow Angel by Glenn Beck

5
This book made my list of favorites. The story of an old man and a young mother and how they enrich and alter each other’s lives leaves one able to put himself into either of their shoes, as well as those of Rachel’s father who resides in a nursing home, where he deals with loneliness and hope of seeing his only child again some day. Wow, that was a long sentence, but I do urge you to get the book.

Lost December by Richard Paul Evans

5
Heartily recommend this book to everyone who likes a heart-warming story! Richard Paul Evans does a masterful job of retelling the story of The Prodigal Son, only set in contemporary times. Be prepared for a variety of emotions as you read, but the telling is so realistic and could happen to anyone, if he lets it.

Doorstep Twins by Rebecca Winters

5
“Doorstep Twins” is a fun, quick read, which is what I was looking for. Gabi Turner is caring for her infant twin nephews, because her sister died after giving birth. She is in Greece, trying to find their father (who didn’t know they existed). There are several surprises in the book, even at the end. (I never have liked predictable books.)

Taking the Heat by Brenda Novak

5
Really got hooked on this book (in fact, just voted for the male character to be the one I would like to spend Valentine’s Day with). Randall Tucker was wrongly incarcerated after being convicted of killing his wife. Since no body was ever found (just some blood spatters in their garage), he didn’t expect to be found guilty, nor did his defense team who kept giving him reassurance that he wouldn’t. His motivation in proving his innocence was his little boy, Landon. There are all kinds of adventures in the story, as he managed to escape prison. It was hard to put down, because I just kept wondering what was going to happen next. Even when I could see that there were only a few pages left to read, I was still wondering. However, it resolved itself to my satisfaction and didn’t feel like the ending was rushed. Highly recommend.

The Preservationist by David Maine

2
This is a supposedly witty and funny version of Noah and the Ark. However, I, being a deeply religious soul, found it to be way too irreverent for my tastes and couldn’t force myself to read more than half the book. It seemed to not only mock God, but Noah, as well, who was not pictured as being a humble servant of God, but as a tyrant. Also, I didn’t feel that sexual escapades belonged in a Bible story!

She Loves Me Not by Wendy Corsi Staub

5
Every Wendy Corsi Staub book I read seems to get better. Rose Larrabee is struggling... struggling to be both mom and dad to two children, struggling to recover from her beloved husband’s accidental death, struggling to make ends meet, just struggling to keep going. And then the troubles really begin! Starting with an unsigned homemade valentine found in her mailbox, then phone calls in the middle of the night playing songs with special meaning to Rose, her nerves are stretched to the maximum. She’s not longer even sure whom she can trust. You’ll probably be as surprised as Rose was to find out who’s behind all of it... and why!

The Help by Katherine Stockett

5
Another book I put off reading (no idea why). When “everyone I knew” was getting excited for the release of the movie, I decided I’d better get with the program. Needless to say, the movie was a big disappointment after reading the book, which is a must-read. Skeeter’s friends are high-faluting society ladies who are not kind to their black help. Skeeter, on the other hand, was brought up by one of these servants (referred to as “the help”) and felt a certain kinship and loyalty to them. As she takes a big risk, herself, she convinces some of the community’s “help” to also take the risk, in writing about their experiences and exposing the injustice that was so prevalent in the South during this time.

Driving Sideways by Jess Riley

5
I debated way too long about whether I should give this book 5 stars or only 4. The writer is tremendously witty, said wit present in almost every sentence. That’s the good thing about the book. The bad thing is that the writer is tremendously witty, said wit present in almost every sentence. It got to be a little cumbersome and hard to get through the story. Sometimes you can get too much of a good thing. That said, Leigh, recipient of a new kidney sets off alone to drive from Wisconsin to California with a few stops planned along the way (one to pay a visit to the family of her donor and learn what he was like). She seems to pick up one more passenger every few states who each contributes to the strange occurrences they experience. I expected a different ending but, upon giving it some thought, decided that it was realistic.

Lisa fell in love with an evil person (not discovering it, of course, until AFTER the wedding). Therefore, she was tremendously relieved when he was killed and she could get her life back. Then her 8-yr-old son was kidnapped. Ransom was paid, but three months later, still nobody has a clue what happened to him or where he could be. Lisa's brother enlists the aid of a "low life" with a questionable past, believing he's their last hope. Even though appalled by the guy, Lisa insists on accompanying him to the jungles of Mexico to search for clues as to where her son is.

Blue Dahlia by Nora Roberts

Stella is a widow, left with two young sons to care for/support. Grieving and looking for a new start, she accepts a job as manager of a nursery in Tennessee. If you love flowers like I do, the floral references, themselves, will hold your attention. If you like romances, add that in as an attention-grabber. But, perhaps, the best part is the resident ghost who resides with Stella's family in the home that comes with the job. I don't know what took me so long to start this trilogy (way too many books in my house, for one thing), but I am eager to read the next two in the series.
