I just got the book The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt. I put it on reserve at the library as soon as I read that it was coming out. He is the author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which inspired us to visit Savannah, GA. I loved the book, and I loved the city. I'm hoping that his new one is just as good.

Michael Allen Dymmoch has a new Thinnes/Caleb mystery out in December called White Tiger and I am really glad, as I like her work a lot.
And Barbara Seranella's long-awaited new one, An Unacceptable Death, is due in January. Yay!

I am most looking forward to reading A Breath of Snow and Ashes because I have read all of Diana Gabaldon's books, and was enthralled by them. I love books about time travel, and hers are especially fascinating.

I'm looking forward (after I finish The Wrong Dog by Carol Lea Benjamin) to A Taint in the Blood by Dana Stabenow. I've always had an interest in things Alaskan ever since college days when one of my profs and his wife asked me to go with them to establish a music school at the U. of Alaska. (The prof was the composer of "The Army Air Corps Song" --- Off we go into the wild blue yonder...) But the Feds didn't come up with enough money to establish the kind of school Mr. Crawford envisioned.) Then my husband was for many years Music Director for a cruise line and went to Alaska many times and loved it. Stabenow makes that wonderful place come alive and tells terrific stories.

I suppose it would be some of the books I currently have checked out from the library plus some I own but don't seem to have the time to read as I check too many from the library. Two from the library that shall be my next ones to read are Zipporah, Wife of Moses by Marek Halter and The Plot Against America by Philip Roth. Two that I have recently purchased and anticipate reading are The Checkbook and the Cruise Missile by Arundhati Royand Shelf Life by Suzanne Strempek Shea.

I am most looking forward to reading Fiddlers by Ed McBain. I have been a huge fan of the 57th Precinct and its characters for many years now. He kept the characters vibrant even after almost 50 years as an author. I am truly sad about his passing and the world is at a loss without this great author who has given 2-3 generations great series. So with bittersweet feelings I will readFiddlers and say goodbye to a beloved series and characters!!

I'm looking forward to reading Greg Rucka's book, hitting bookshelves October 25th, Private Wars. This is a sequel to his first book, A Gentleman's Game. After reading it, I'm a total fan of Rucka. Plus, this book is about a female assassin. Anyone who writes about a woman kicking butt, with an on-edge attitude, I'm bound to read it. Thanks Rucka for making a book that I enjoy to read. Eavan Boland has a new book of poetry coming out in February 2006, which I have preordered. Anything by Boland is a much-looked-forward-to read --- the lady is the Queen of the Irish Women Poets, and frankly for my dollar the Queen of the USA Women poets. Any striving author would find her book, Object Lessons, a hidden gem. As to helpful books to authors or wannabes, take a look not at the Bird by Bird types of books, but rather at the real stories of authors: Williams, Stafford (one of the best), Kooser --- to mention a few.
