What is your favorite book that was made into a movie?

Debby236@aol.com
I would have to say that I still love Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell as my favorite.

BobS92705@aol.com
Dances With Wolves by Michael Blake.

Sarah@centeredpath.com
My favorite book made into a movie is a book from childhood:Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh!

bencanada1@yahoo.com
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

cjajja@sympatico.ca
My favourite book that was made into a movie was To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book was unbeatable and the movie is still unsurpassed.

bab@tennis.com
A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar.

Lorene2354@aol.com
A Time to Kill by John Grisham.

Rickimc@aol.com
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy because the director stayed true to Tolkien's vision by altering some events for the big screen.

rojosho@hotmail.com
Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally.

Wildice24@aol.com
The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller. The book was the most romantic novel I have read --- and I have read many. The movie often is not as good, but in this case Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood carried it off so well, with the music adding to the words, that I will never forget it.

raiderdk@gibsoncounty.net
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
I read this book as a teenager and saw the movie when it came out. I was in my thirties. The movie was very good. The book was better --- but aren't they all?

msimon@nj.rr.com
The Human Stain by Philip Roth.

jberger@salud.unm.edu
Exodus by Leon Uris.

realbencann@yahoo.com
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens.

stephejl@@stclair.k12.il.us
I can't pick just one, so my favorite three are:
The Firm by John Grisham
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand

BrittanyNicole17@aol.com
The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Carolinesusieg@aol.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie is Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie! My second favorite would have to be Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Murder on the Orient Express is a movie that I can watch over and over and a book that I can read and reread and never ever tire of it! I love it!

KuniP@aol.com
The Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard. The book was gut wrenching and sad and beautiful, all at the same time. After reading the book, you felt like you knew the family, the desires and hope that Sam/Ben would embrace his "new" family.

The best part in the movie was when she could not find Ben and she gets to the point that she is so desperate and she screams Ben's name, crying and sobbing. I get goose bumps just thinking about it.

The best part was that while reading the book, I though of Michelle Pfeiffer as the mother and then she was cast in the part.

BHpurple@aol.com
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Ericsson Lindgren!

lslott@optonline.net
I have a lot of favorite books into movies, but I would have to say that my absolute favorite is still Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. It cut out some of the boring parts of the book, it had a female heroine to love and hate and it had the wonderful Clark Gable playing the devious and ultimately sympathetic hero Rhett Butler. A classic book and a classic movie.

CAROLF24@aol.com
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

BSmith@Townsendtree.com
Two books come to mind when asked which book I liked best when turned into a movie. The first is Stephen King's The Green Mile. I think they did a fabulous job of staying true to the original book with this movie. The casting was wonderful as well. The second that comes to mind is James Patterson's 1st to Die. Although it was a TV movie as opposed to the big screen, I really enjoyed this one as well.

txrose420@msn.com
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

DebMillinFla@aol.com
One of my favorite books made into a movie was The Color Purpleby Alice Walker. The acting was great and brought the characters alive to me.

CPerona@aol.com
The Firm by John Grisham.

KPRSTARZ@aol.com
This has never changed for me: The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough.

tiffani_ba@hotmail.com
My favourite book that has been made into a movie is Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, which Sullivan Ent. made into a movie back in the early 1980s. I loved both.

DFazio6994@aol.com
The Godfather by Mario Puzo.

macshell62@hotmail.com
The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris.

FRANCES732@aol.com
The Fan by Peter Abrahams.

Rrrcaron@aol.com
Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts. I also think they did a wonderful job with the movie. After my daughter watched it, she read the book and now she's reading more and more!

LoneyThree@aol.com
My favorite book made into a movie is definitely Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. I loved Renee Zelwegger.

Graham2124@aol.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie was Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.

Hon2724@aol.com
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.
Although the book was better than the movie and the movie was not altogether as the book was written, the length was 4 hours as it was produced. The context came out well, and I have seen it at least five times and read the book at least four.

swl44th@hotmail.com
My favorite book that was then made into a movie was of courseTo Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

shadowfax@usachoice.net
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

dvolkenannt@charter.net
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is my favorite book that was made into a movie.

amigo1@comcast.net
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

kpeters@ualberta.ca
I must admit I'm an old romantic: Gone With the Wind (or "Went with the Breeze" as my Father would say) is my absolute favourite. And I love both the movie and the book.

mdcarter@netidea.com
Legends of the Fall by Jim Harrison. Great book, so/so film

jennjett@juno.com
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.

juliecbarnard@yahoo.com
Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak, without any question. Wonderful book, wonderful movie!

klp5ca@yahoo.com
I read Seabiscuit this summer and loved it, and then saw the movie. While it was short on detail, it was, overall, just terrific!

leepcat@yahoo.ca
Even though there was "director's license" taken, I really have enjoyed reading and then seeing all three Lord of the Rings books and movies. Tolkien did a masterful job of crafting the tales, and Jackson and Walsh did a superb job of making them come to life.

heidicarter@cox.net
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane.

BERNTONE@aol.com
My favorite book of all-time happens to also be my favorite movie of all-time, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

anonymous
My all-time favorite is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, but more recently I enjoyed The English Patient. I'd read an excerpt inThe New Yorker that featured Kip, the Sikh demolitions expert, and then saw the excellent film. The book, of course, was much better: much more development of all characters, and more complex plot and overall themes. The filmmakers were wise to focus on just one facet of the novel.

EMMONSMC@msn.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie is Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

FtLicky@aol.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie would probably have to be A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, because I felt that the cinematic version stayed completely true to the book. Not much was changed, and the actors/actresses chosen for the parts were fantastic.

SCARTER163@aol.com
They don't come any better than The Maltese Falcon. Dashiell Hammett captured me with wonderful characters, an engaging story and a great ending. The movie was pretty good too!

neelrish@yahoo.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie, or favorite movie that was made from a book, was The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. The movie was virtually identical to the book. This was a feat that I thought, at the time of it's making, would be impossible to achieve. The filmmakers managed to reproduce the writings of the author.

MelJPrincess@aol.com
Timeline by Michael Crichton.

GandmaRI@aol.com
My favorite book made into a movie was The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller.

LetsJustDance@aol.com
The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris.

Bjglu@aol.com
It's got to be Gone with the Wind!!!

Bforsythe1218@aol.com
One of my favorites would have to be Braveheart, but my all-time favorite is A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. I've read the book/drama more times than I can count and seen the movie (several adaptations --- but the Brando one is my fave) innumerable times as well.

DFSn180@aol.com
Cold Mountain was a great book and was a fabulous movie! The movie really brought the book alive, followed it well and made you want to read the book again.

Tlzenk@aol.com
Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin. It is the only book that is exactly like the movie.

Fafajane@aol.com
The Great Santini. As a fan of Pat Conroy, I loved this movie. It captures the sadness of the home situation without negating the love within the family as well. Robert Duval was his usual "terrific," Blythe Danner was perfect and the rest of the cast was equally credible. I have used it in the classroom to illustrate a different kind of father from Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Tgoswife325@aol.com
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

AubreyL320@aol.com
The Cider House Rules by John Irving.

LSharon@Brwncald.com
Chocolat by Joanne Harris. I loved the book and loved the movie. I thought it was the perfect adaptation.

tfranzen2124@comcast.net
The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy was the book that grabbed me, and then the movie was made and handled fairly well.

gsheehan@wideopenwest.com
My favorite was The Dead Zone by Stephen King. The movie captured the pain and agony that the main character dealt with because of his "gift." The movie was not a box-office success, yet it remains my personal favorite.

Vikkivand@aol.com
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.

ARomano895@aol.com
The Client by John Grisham. By far this was one of Grisham's BEST and the movie had an outstanding cast. Very well done. I saw the MOVIE at least 5 times.

Joantwt@aol.com
My favorite book made into a movie is To Kill a Mockingbird.

vixw@adelphia.net
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, without a doubt.

Usually I'm disappointed with the movies of my favorite books because of how they change the story to fit "commercial needs."

edred@tampabay.rr.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie has to be The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. A friend had given me that book to read a long time ago, and it completely changed my thinking in many ways. I knew that if I struggled that I could succeed as the hero and heroine did in that story. It was very interesting to see the book transformed into a movie.

MAP5402@aol.com
I think the best movie made from a book was To Kill a Mockingbird.

KLOZIER40@aol.com
Being a forward-looking person, I choose The Da Vinci Code and can't wait to see how they make the movie!!!

DStegmanCrawford@aol.com
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.
STILL the best book I ever read, and an all-time favorite movie of mine!!

Anne516@aol.com
Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks. It took my breath away!!

JFWisherd@aol.com
My favorite book made into a movie is East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

ATESSL@aol.com
The Cider House Rules by John Irving.

pk5050@shaw.ca
Gosh, there are so many to choose from. I really have enjoyed a lot. I've been reading the Harry Potter series and have loved the movies, so I guess those would be it.

Lgluhani@aol.com
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

Webgaw@aol.com
Beaches by Iris Rainer Dart.

EEnge63844@aol.com
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

Anonymous
My favorite book that was made into a movie is The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller. The book gave a much more in-depth view of the relationship between the two main characters, but the film did a very good job of telling their story as well. Of course, having both Clint Eastwood AND Meryl Streep in the film made it even better!

CHLadd@aol.com
My favorite book, The Body by Stephen King, was later made into the movie Stand By Me. It was the best ... "sincerely"!!!

afn02519@afn.org
The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

cjluther@charter.net
I'm usually disappointed by movies from books, the book is ALWAYS better. Having said that I did love A River Runs Through It.

constantly@sbcglobal.net
One of my favorite books made into a movie is For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. The characters and moral dilemmas that they faced were portrayed beautifully and did not stray far from the book. A wonderful book and wonderful movie ... among the best of the 20th century, in my opinion, of course. This movie led me to read just about everything Hemingway wrote, thus the movie was truly a gift to me.

rsaxe@utoledo.edu
My favorite book into a film right now would be The Bible and The Passion of the Christ. It goes to a new level beyond the phony but interesting films of the past, such as The Ten Commandments.

mcgillrmcgill@charter.net
One of my favorite books is Maeve Binchy's Circle of Friends. My daughter loved it too and we couldn't wait for the movie to come out. I'm usually pretty tolerant of book films because I know they can't get everything in, but this one was a huge disappointment --- especially the ending, which they turned around so much it ruined the whole point of the story.

joswood@adiis.net
Mystic River comes to mind immediately. I loved the book by Dennis Lehane, and I thought the movie was excellent also. It is a dark story, but the character development and plot elevate the whole thing to a great read/movie.

The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy is another favorite of mine. The movie could not begin to include all the wonderful, rich details that made the book such a good read, but it was very well done.

mtc350@hotmail.com
It has to be the Lord of the Rings trilogy. My personal favorite being The Fellowship of the Ring --- both book and movie.

PTOHawk@aol.com
The Princess Bride by William Goldman. Funny, funny book.

sphairm@cox.net
My current favorite book to movie is Chocolat by Joanne Harris.

jalocke@comcast.net
Quo Vadis by Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz and the latest isThe Cider House Rules by John Irving. The book is even better as it covers much more background of the cast of players and events.

baxtergr@msn.com
I seldom view movies made from books I have read or intend to read. Therefore, my favorite is an old one, but it was most faithful, IMO, to the book, with the exception of the ending: The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

Screamy8@aol.com
Misery by Stephen King.

CallMeDabo@aol.com
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I read it when I was 12 and a few months later I woke up late one night to watch it on TV --- I cried just as hard!

MSpicker@aol.com
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

AnneK7@aol.com
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane.

Sheaynt@comcast.net
The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

lylacfey@mchsi.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie was The Outsidersby S.E. Hinton.

john.burton@comcast.net
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

Trishajr@aol.com
I enjoyed The Hours by Michael Cunningham and was very pleased to see that the movie remained true to the book. While watching it with someone who hadn't read it, I was extremely glad I had. The film moving from one woman to the next was made much easier to follow if you were familiar with the book. The film was beautifully done, had amazing acting and was most enjoyable to watch.

ccasey@ncentral.com
I know it seems much too obvious since it's a current event, but one of my all-time favorite books is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I am glad the movies turned out so well and true.

From childhood I would pick Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery and from my recent readings, Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham.

Gfwebpge@aol.com
Somewhere in Time by Richard Matheson is a book that was made into a movie of the same name with Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer.

kapmem@juno.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie is a book that I read in high school (25 years ago) that was made into a movie last year. Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle is a sweet, exciting book that I recently reread and found persistently charming and interesting. The movie, which was made last year, was well-done, and the sisters, father, stepmother and brothers were all well-cast and well-done.

Gramanik2001@comcast.net
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg is my favorite book into movie. Both the book and the movie were extremely enjoyable for me.

sonia.chopra@worldnet.att.net

JRobert335@aol.com

KTBug931@aol.com
My favorite book made into a movie has to be the classic Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. It's one of the few times I wasn't disappointed when I saw the movie. It was just perfect, at least in my mind.

Bdcw50@aol.com
My favorite book made into a movie is Angela's Ashes, but my favorite movie made from a book is Mystic River.

pureevil25@yahoo.com
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane!

Sismilli@aol.com
My favorite book that was turned into a movie would have to beLonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. I saw the mini-series first and then read the book. In this case I think it made me actually enjoy the book more being able to picture the two main characters as they were brought to life in the movie by Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. I thought the book and the movie were both fantastic, and Lonesome Dove remains one of my favorite books and movies.

kathybear@comcast.net
The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. It and Gone With the Wind are the two most memorable books made into movies with me, but I like The Andromeda Strain better.

barleykw@appstate.edu
My favorite book that was made into a movie is Fried Green Tomatoes.

pharm0903@hardings.com

daubuchon@athensisd.net
Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes.

ellist@netscape.net
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien.

ctritt@comcast.net
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is my all-time favorite book that was made into a movie many years ago, having read it probably a dozen times and watched the movie even more than that. I was hooked on this book and movie from the first time I saw the movie and then I had to read the book. I went to see the movie as a teenager with my cousin back in the '60s when we didn't know what else to do one evening and this was the only movie playing at the drive-in. I loved the movie and had to buy the book and loved reading it.

gg2tara@alltel.net
Definitely Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen.

Ekimberly@aol.com
The best book I ever read that was made into a movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it as a young girl and couldn't put it down. I've seen the movie countless times and it is as gripping as the book ever was.

I loved A Time to Kill by John Grisham, which was made into a movie.

idavidso@optonline.net
My favorite book that was made into a movie is John Irving's The World According to Garp. Though there were many differences in the book and in the movie, Garp's portrayal by Robin Williams was phenomenal.

impkatt@hotmail.com
My favorite book that has been made into a movie is The Lord of the Rings.

caliauds66@aol.com
Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent.

yoteach24@comcast.net
My favorite book that was made into a movie is The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman. The book was excellent as was the movie. The book is rich with details that could not be represented in the movie, and to just know that this was a true story of survival and a man of great talent, it is truly extraordinary. The movie and the book will remain my favorites for a long time.

maestraw@msn.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie is Ordinary People. I read it as a college freshman, way back in the late 1970s, and then saw the movie. What a story.

Gidget2064@aol.com
By far the most captivatingly true-to-the-book movie is The Virgin Suicides, written by Jeffrey Eugenides and produced by Sofia Coppola. The story sucks the reader into a world where many of us (depending on our current ages) have been, back into our childhoods, teenhoods, the sidewinding days of prepubescence. The movie captures the mood carried throughout the book, leaving no emotion unjangled. The excitement, unsteadiness, embarrassment and stolen teen romantic sparks are conveyed onto the screen with such an ethereal mist that the characters appear to be floating in time. Their feet never touch the ground and neither did mine having seen the movie a year after both my daughter and I read the book. We were both astonished because the movie is "spot on" everything the book is --- a very haunting novel about what some people can do to life.

PamE523@aol.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie was The Thorn Birds. I even had the cast selected in my mind to include Richard Chamberlain, except I imagined Jane Seymour as his love interest.

astankan@carolina.rr.com
For me it would have to be The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje.

billiegirl20@hotmail.com
When movies stay true to the original concept of a book, the movie is truly an enjoyable experience. I've loved Seabiscuit and all the Stephen King books/movies (The StandThe Shining,Carrie, especially), but my all-time favorite has to be The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. What a truly wonderful and beautiful book AND movie. While there were some changes to the story, the writer stayed pretty close to the feelings and thoughts of the book. I love both so much!

Cobblestonedrive@aol.com
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Louq62@aol.com
My favorite book made into a movie is To Kill a Mockingbird.

jefrob@earthlink.net
Wow, that's a tough one, as I have several. The top of my list is headed up by The Lord of the Rings. I first read this trilogy as a 13-year-old with a vivid imagination. Imagine my surprise and delight when the images onscreen matched those that had been in my head for 25 years (after several readings)! I also lovedSophie's Choice and Out of Africa, both books that I loved dearly on the page and onscreen.

DPerry1060@aol.com
One of my favorites was The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans, although I didn't enjoy the movie as much as the book.

GrettaGarble398@aol.com
My favorite book hasn't yet been made into a movie. I am waiting for The Da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons to be made.

Ladybug524@aol.com
A Woman of Independent Means by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey. I loved the book for portraying a strong woman who feels she can show strength and independence while still being a lady. Sally Field played the lead role in the movie and was perfectly cast. The movie was also very faithful to the book, which is rare these days.

baost@juno.com
I loved W.P.'s Kinsella's Shoeless Joe. I saw Field of Dreams the first day it came out and liked it, but didn't think it lived up to the book. I didn't really expect it to, so I wasn't too disappointed.

Big Fish by Daniel Wallace.
I loved the movie so I went out and bought the book that it was based on. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. Daniel Wallace's storytelling is amazing, and it is no wonder that they made a movie of the book. I give it two thumbs up.

Lord of the Rings by Tolkien.

RAVEN0555@aol.com
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

juliecbarnard@yahoo.com
Without a doubt, my favorite book (actually a series) that was made into a movie (actually movies) was The Lord of the Rings. If for some peculiar reason, that doesn't count, then Doctor Zhivago.

Kikiv68@aol.com
There is no doubt in my mind that the answer is To Kill a Mockingbird. I can't decide what I like best, the book or the movie...

SOLFA1@aol.com
Roots by Alex Haley.

DrgnEmrald@aol.com
It is a toss up between series, not just books. On the one hand, J.K Rowling's Harry Potter book series has been turned into excellent movies, and dead on with the books! On the other hand, you have the wonderfully done Tolkien trilogy turned into movies. The Return of the King even grabbed 11 Emmys this year!

lindaharriet@netzero.net
The Cider House Rules by John Irving.

lindadonohue@hotmail.com
Without a doubt, Gone With the Wind was my book turned into a movie favorite. I read Gone With the Wind when I was in the 7th grade in about 1960, hiding beneath all my bedcovers with a flashlight. I read until it was very late. It was an "adult" novel and I was enthralled. Hooked on books forever. Historical fiction is still a favorite genre. I was an English major at the University of Washington. This book had it all. Still does. Fabulous. I was sad when it ended. And so proud because it was over a thousand pages. My 7th grade English teacher was impressed that I had read it and with my book report. Mrs. Nelson. No, Miss Nelson. She had the worst case of dandruff. It was like powdered sugar on her hair and shoulders. Every day. But she had a great sense of humor and seemed to sincerely enjoy her 7th graders.

mjforres@yahoo.com
True Grit by Charles Portis.
The novel by Portis is wonderful and the movie, starring John Wayne, beautifully captures all the little touches of humor.

I would definitely say Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. This was our book club's choice long before we knew it would be made into a movie. The book was such a wonderful odyssey and you weren't sure what to expect at the end. The movie was equally wonderful with great characters, sets and costumes.

My favorite book that was made into a movie .... can I have two choices?
Chocolat by Joanne Harris and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
They both are my favorite all-time books, that's for sure. And the movies were just a wonderful treat in addition. Very well done, with important messages, both of them. Extraordinary masterpieces.

My favorite book that has been turned into a movie is The Firm by John Grisham.

MoM3g2b@aol.com
Mystic River, which I read when it was first published. Often disappointed with the outcome, I held my breath several times during the movie. Clint Eastwood bought the rights as soon as he read the book and captured each character with perfection.

lslott@optonline.net
There is no question that it is Gone With the Wind. I enjoyed the book, but I adored the movie.

stays@olypen.com
The book was True Crime by Andrew Klavan. The movie version did not come close to the enjoyment of reading the book.

My favorite book that was turned into a great made-for-TV movie is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.

Gone With the Wind was my favorite movie from a book. I read the book again after seeing the movie.

KGraetzRSP@aol.com
The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans was my favorite book that was made into a movie. I felt the characters were well cast and the scenery was spectacular. It truly came alive. I also liked the ending from the movie actually better than the book.

My favorite book that was made into a movie is Harriet the Spyby Louise Fitzhugh. I must have read that book a dozen times while I was growing up! It was just so different from anything else I'd ever read, and such an interesting concept! The only thing I didn't like about it was that Harriet ate tomato sandwiches. Yuck!

Of course the movie didn't do the book justice; in my opinion they never do. There is so much in a novel that filmmakers are forced to leave out of a 2-hour movie.

ginnyann@zoominternet.net
The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough is my favorite book to movie. While there were some changes in the movie, it still kept the essence of the book.

My favorite book that was made into a movie was Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. The book was so beautifully written and haunting about an intense love the girl had for someone. The movie was well done, also.

My favorite book that was made into a movie is Cold Mountain. This story truly tugs at the heartstrings, even before I saw the movie!

I have many favorites, but my all-time fave book that was made into a movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. It's a timeless story of an honorable character, Atticus Finch, a man of integrity, who fights for social justice for a black man in an era of racial discrimination and injustice. I also love the relationship between Atticus, a widowed, single father, and his two children --- how he teaches, disciplines and cares for them. The little girl, Scout, is a great character in the story, with her innocence, her curiosity and her bravery as a child to speak simple truths that challenge ignorant adults. Scout and her big brother also have an admirable relationship --- how he looks out for her and stands up for her.

I do have other favorites, including Bridget Jones's Diary andSense and Sensibility, but the black-and-white movie version ofTo Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck is filled with timeless, endless lessons that apply to any time period in our American society.

Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Of course, the movie wasn't as good as the book. The book always has more to it.

Roscoe@drizzle.com
One of the finest examples I think of a great book made into a great movie (and I am sure I'm not the only one to name it) would be Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. I also thought the adaptation of Walter Mosley's Devil in a Blue Dress was very good, with a fantastic cast. Although they did simplify the plot, the setting and talent were really wonderful.

Samgrass@aol.com
The Wings of the Dove by Henry James.

Zolemica@aol.com
I cannot say that I have just one favorite; I have three:

My first favorite book made into a movie was Shogun. Yes, this was a TV series rather than a theater release. Yet Shogun is not only one of the best novels that I have ever read, it is also one of the best movies (albeit television) that I have ever seen. With some very minor exceptions, it is very faithful to the plot. In addition, the acting and cast were superb, and the entire movie exceedingly well done. The book makes for absolutely marvelous reading; I wouldn't have wanted it shorter by so much as one sentence. What makes Shogun especially enjoyable --- at least to me --- is the sensation of feeling like an unwritten character. At the very least, I feel like an actual witness to the people and events of feudal Japan, viz. I feel as if I am personally experiencing the events of this period in Japanese history. Perhaps that is one reason that I find Shogun so compelling as both a novel and film. Shogun was James Clavell at his absolute best.

I would be remiss if I failed to mention what has often been called "The Great American Novel." I refer, of course, to Gone With the Wind. Both book and movie are timeless classics. I know that whether I read the book or see the movie (either one for the nth time), I will tremendously enjoy it. I know that whether I read the book or see the movie, it is time well and pleasurably spent. I greatly enjoy historical fiction, especially when a story is set against the backdrop of the American Civil War.

My third favorite novel(s) made into a movie is Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Although I must admit to a smidgen of disappointment with some very minor points in the movie trilogy, I nevertheless found each movie absolutely spellbinding. The only (tiny) differences I had with the movie were 1) I thought (and still do) that Arwen should have been played by an actress at least slightly older than Liv Tyler --- although she did an exemplary job, I admit. Arwen is not a mere teen in the book; she is a beautiful but mature woman. 2) Peter Jackson took quite a bit of artistic license with the last movie, The Return of the King.

However, though not completely faithful to the book, the movie's content was nevertheless very plausible. It was easy for me to believe Tolkien could have written it that way instead of how it was written in the book. The production greatly surpassed my wildest imagination --- the sets were indescribably beautiful, and the characters and events so realistic and amazing. I only wish that the golden mallorn tree had been shown in Lothlorien. Initially I was disappointed that "Gollum" was to be a computer-generated image. However, Gollum was so realistic that I forgot I was watching an image and not a real actor. And it was pure pleasure to see that Jackson did not tamper with the illustrations in the LOTR trilogy, but left them as they were in the books. One Ring to rule them all...

SASadler@aol.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie is Stella Gibbons's marvelous comic novel Cold Comfort Farm.

annm.mackinnon@ns.sympatico.ca
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding.

ntroike@comcast.net
I really liked the book Hart's War by John Katzenbach. Now, the movie with Bruce Willis wasn't as good but you didn't ask whether we liked the movie, only a good book. I read many books and Hart's War ranks at the top. I can believe that during WWII racial tensions were high and that to have to rely upon your fellow soldiers, some of whom would be of a different race, took some tough getting used to, and Mr. Katzenbach brought this out in his book.

KeyofCToo@aol.com
Hawaii by James Michener. Still one of my all-time favorites. It was made into one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The book had many plots, the movie none. If you have seen the movie, don't let it influence you into not reading the book. You will be missing a great experience.

tazaroo@mchsi.com
My favorite was 1st to Die by James Patterson.

LoneyThree@aol.com
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.

My favorite book that has been made into a movie is The Bridges of Madison County. The book was great and the movie was just as good. The actors who were picked to be in the movie played the parts perfectly.

My favorite book that was made into a movie is The Shining by Stephen King!

Invisibledancer@aol.com
I have been someone who usually reads the book first. Very rarely does the movie live up to the book. Reading a book we have the advantage of knowing what several characters are thinking at the same time. Recently, I went to see Mystic River. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the movie! My friend who went with me has not read the book. He said he was very confused and didn't understand the significance of who the real killer was. The movie was so fast-paced that I thought the ending would be different from the book.

rileyslemming@hotmail.com
That would have to be the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. I enjoyed the books immensely and to see them brought to life on screen was exciting and not at all disappointing, as so many other movies based on books turn out to be.

Trackman@aol.com
That's a real difficult question, but after thinking it over for a bit, I'd have to say that Giant by Edna Ferber was my favorite book made into a movie. There are so many that I've read and enjoyed over the years and then later enjoyed seeing the movie version. Another one that I really enjoyed was Exodus by Leon Uris. As a matter of fact, I'd have a real difficult time choosing either of those over the other one!

Hands down, Harry Potter --- all of them so far! I highly recommend reading the book first, but the director and actors in the movie do a superb job.

keene_b@Mercer.EDU
I really loved the book The Hours. My book group had previously read Mrs. Dalloway, so I was really interested in how The Hourswould relate to it. I think Michael Cunningham did a masterful job of interweaving his characters, settings and emotions with those of Virginia Woolf's story.

And the movie … well, that was just icing on the cake! I was thrilled with the actors and how true they were in their interpretation of Michael Cunningham's book.

I recently received a gift of The Mrs. Dalloway Reader by Virginia Woolf and Francine Prose, and look forward to more insight into this remarkable story.

melissa.mackenzie@ncdsb.com
Without a doubt, my favourite book/movie is The Godfather. The book itself is fantastic and the movie made the book better. It is considered to be a classic in both movie and book form.

The Lord of the Rings. If you read the book and/or seen the movie, you already know why.

The Dead Zone by Stephen King. I know it was a long time ago, but I remember being completely impressed by it.

NCGambler@aol.com
My favorite book is Beryl Markham's West with the Night, about the life of an extraordinary English woman growing up in Africa. The movie based on this book was entitled Shadow on the Sun,which starred Stephanie Powers (1991). This was not a great movie, but it was not bad. Very few movies equal or exceed the book, so this is not unexpected. Hemingway greatly admired West with the Night, and although it is not as well-known as Karen Blixen's Out of Africa, it is equally deserving of praise.

sueh@olivia.lib.mn.us
I'm not sure if this qualifies, but my favorite book was Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, which was made into a miniseries. I started to read the book before the miniseries and had a difficult time, but after watching it, it fell into place. I believe it was one of the best adaptations that kept the integrity of the written work.

My favorite movie that was based on a book has to be The Scarlet Pimpernel. I love the Anthony Andrews/Jane Seymour version, but I do enjoy the more recent Richard E. Grant version. Do I have to also say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book by Baroness Orzcy?! (I did)

tansbks@netscape.net
My youngest daughter and I really enjoyed reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone together. When it was made into a movie it was something we could both enjoy all over again. Now we have read all the books together and own both movies.

My favorite book that was made into a movie was The Green Mileby Stephen King. When I go to a movie that is based on a book that I have read, I look for two things: 1) Has the movie captured the essence of the story? (we all know most movies based on books usually add or subtract from the story line of the book, if for no other reason than the difference in genres; a movie is usually 2 hours or so, while the book may take a week to read) 2) Visually, does the movie scenery and characters closely match the visual images I got while reading the book? The Green Mile came the closest in both categories to my criteria. I have never seen a movie where almost nothing of the book was left out and where the characters and scenery were eerily what I imagined they would look like as I read the book.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy.

PandoraO5@aol.com
My favorite book that was made into a movie would definitely have to be The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It is one of my favorite books, which I first read at around this time last year. About a month ago I kept hearing allusions and references to The Count of Monte Cristo, and so I got "home sick" for those days when I had been reading it and quickly ordered it from amazon.com. Great movie, amazing book.

OSTERBERGS@aol.com
The Shipping News by Annie Proulx. In the movie, Judi Dench is a saint and Kevin Spacey is a master of modern times.

pauljoydouglas@bigpond.com
This is definitely a tough one. I think it would have to be The Green Mile by Stephen King. The Green Mile was a book that I just couldn't put down. It came in a seven-part series that I managed to spread throughout the entire week, with great difficulty of course. It was a terrific story!

The book was fantastic and the movie was executed perfectly. It followed the storyline and didn't leave me disappointed after watching the sad film. The characters were just as I imagined them, except for Mr. Jingles --- he was just a little more special.

This was a great translation from text to picture, and will always be my favorite book that was made into a movie.

Sense and Sensibility. Emma Thompson's adaptation of Jane Austen's engrossing novel was phenomenal!

JTURNER@library.unt.edu
I enjoyed seeing the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The minor characters were more fleshed out in this version than they were in other versions. This version made it easy and fun to imagine this oft-told tale through other characters' eyes since the minor characters were so important in this version.
