FalseMillennium@aol.com
After reading a review of Dennis Lehane's new book Shutter Islandin the magazine Entertainment Weekly with an accompanying piece about the author, I checked all of Lehane's previous novels out of the library. I am currently reading (and enjoying tremendously) A Drink Before the War. I have just finished Jeffrey Deaver's The Vanished Man, and was so taken by it's theme that I have since checked out books on magic theory, a subject I had never held any interest in prior to reading the novel. I would highly recommend The Vanished Man and A Drink Before the War.

The book on top of my pile is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I just finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for the 5th time and will read #3 and #4 (also for the 5th time --- I was desperate in the last couple of years waiting for the new Harry Potter book) in the coming weeks so I am all set for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which I am very eagerly awaiting. I'm 44 years old and love the Harry Potter books!

HOKAJO2@aol.com
At the top of my pile is Lorna Landvik's Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons. I was so excited to learn about her new book, as I loved Patty Jane's House of Curl, but I'm wondering how similar the Housewives book will be to The Saving Graces and The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, both of which chronicled the joys and sadness of female friendships. Anyway, I'm looking forward toAngry Housewives Eating Bon Bons this weekend.

The book on the top of my reading pile is Blood Test by Jonathan Kellerman.
* * * * *
pkjablonsk@webtv.net
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane.

bookchik1@yahoo.com
I'm currently absorbed in Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azir Nafisi. It is the account of her life in totalitarian Iran and her own private defiance of the regime. For 2 years, she held weekly meetings in her home for seven of her brightest female students. They would read and discuss banned literature. The book is truly absorbing and I recommend it highly.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling.
* * * * *
GL3P@aol.com
I am currently reading Dead Aim by Iris Johansen. It's good but not as riveting as some of her others such as Ugly Duckling, which was my favorite so far.
I am also reading Birthright by Nora Roberts. Unfortunately she has a few duds among her greats and this is a ho hum book. I guess I prefer her as JD Robb. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a few unusual twists, a really great read. The Jester by James Patterson was a surprise. I am not one of his regular fans, but I did find this an excellent read and so different for him. He still managed to get in lots of blood and gore, but with a well researched historical love story. Yes, I am one of those people who can't read one book at a time. "Too many books, not enough time."

On the top of my reading pile is almost always the Bible because I don't read/study it nearly as often as I need. It is not always the book I am currently reading or will read next, but picked up now and then. I keep it on top to remind me what I should be reading.
* * * * *

* * * * *
lhetterick@watervalley.net
I just finished reading Lying Awake by Mark Salzman. It's an excellent book. It's a fairly short book at 181 pages and large print, but it packs quite a wallop. I learned a lot I didn't know about Catholicism and epilepsy, since this book is about a nun who is diagnosed with the condition --- not the seizure kind, but the kind that makes some people believe they are having religious experiences. Prior to reading this book, I didn't know there was more than one kind of epilepsy. I didn't have a clue what it was like to be a cloistered nun either.
The great thing about this book, though, is not how informative it is, but that it gives you a lot to think about and discuss. The protagonist, Sister John, has a brain tumor causing the epilepsy. Should she have it removed and possibly lose her "visions" of God, or should she just consider it as God's will and let nature take its course? If you read this book, you'll see it's even more complicated than that (this would be an outstanding book club selection). This, to me, is the perfect novel, both informative and thought-provoking.

Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White is at the top of my must-read pile. Actually I've read about one-third of it, but it's a library copy and much in demand, so when it was due I had to return it. My name just came back to the top of the reserve list, and now that I have it again, I'm eager to finish this fascinating novel.

Blood on the Tongue by Stephen Booth
* * * * *
JmkWild@aol.com
Breaking Clean, a memoir by Judy Blunt. It's a wonderful recreation of life
on the prairie in the 50's and 60's --- a revelation to one brought up in the city. Particularly affecting is its description of the role that animals played in her family's life, and the arduous nature of daily life, especially
for women.

Final Justice by W.E.B Griffin.
Suspensful ... knowing the series also helps. The author does get too hung up on people's titles. I notice that in other military type novels also. All created equal --- right!

This is a book that contains so many twists and turns, it will keep you guessing to the very last page. I had not had the pleasure of reading this author before this book. After finishing it, I bought two others by him. I just finished Tell No One. It's equally riveting. It's been years since I read such suspense. He has filled a niche in mystery writing.

I Wasn't Ready To Say Goodbye by Brook Noel and Pamela Blair, P.H.D.
I saw Brook Noel at a recent book signing and she gave me such comfort in her talking to me about the death of her own brother after I had lost both of my parents. I bought her book and found it to be so helpful to me. It offers alot of resource material in it as well as advice, comfort, and dealing with grief. Everyone should have this book.

At the top of my reading pile is The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.
It's the true story of the 1892 World's Fair in Chicago where the first known "urban psychopath" built a "house of terror" alongside the World's Fair. It's at the top of my list for a couple of reasons: 1) after reading the reviews it looked like too good a story to pass up and 2) it's my reading group's choice for May, so it's next on my list.

The book I just shifted to the top of my reading pile is I Am the Central Park Jogger. Kathy Reichs' book WAS on top, but I've been curious about this victim's story for many years now, and since she's finally decided to go public with her story, I am anxious to read it. I have spent many years of my life working in the feminist movement to advance laws and agencies that will help stop violence against women, and although I am not actively agitating anymore [after 10 years, I burned out], this is still a cause very important to me, and I'm very interested to know how she handled this shattering experience.
THEN I'll go back and try to decide which book gets read first --- Reichs' newest mystery, or shall I get caught up with my Jeffrey Deaver? So many books, so little time......

So, as soon as I finish The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, I will read it. Many wonderful books got in the way --- Thomas Merton's The Seven Storey Mountain was by far the best;Life of Pi was wonderful, The Secret Life of Bees, the new Grisham book, and Holes. The list goes on and on. As they say, "So many books, so little time."
