Which book or author has made you laugh out loud the most?

kryzewski@comcast.net
Elinor Lipman has a way of turning a "serious day" into one of humor when reading her books. I can't get enough of her!

* * * * *

eesserman@stny.rr.com
Christopher Moore has made me laugh out loud on a regular basis.

* * * * *

DPanzy@aol.com
I have to say that my answer would be Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books.

* * * * *

DHHARTLEY@aol.com
Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood

* * * * *

Britadon@aol.com
Janet Evanovich. I cannot recall which book but I could not resist laughing at the scene in which the corpse wrapped in a rug flew off the top of the culprit's car!

* * * * *

n2hul@adelphia.net
Anything by Carl Hiaasen!!

* * * * *

LKarlak@aol.com
Bill Bryson --- his books are witty and candid.

* * * * *

NoelWillis@aol.com
The book that made me laugh out loud most was Sweet Thursdayby John Steinbeck.

* * * * *

Jonesbb1@aol.com
The one author who always makes me laugh out loud is Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series. I was reading one of her books on an airplane and laughed so much the flight attendant came over and asked me about the book. If you aren't familiar with her work, give it a try. Too, too funny!

* * * * *

JMull81972@aol.com
I always laugh out loud when reading books written by Jude Deveraux.

* * * * *

LongSuz@aol.com
Over the years, the late Erma Bombeck has made me laugh the most. I even quote her!

* * * * *

pdcleff@enter.net
Without a doubt, Bill Bryson.

* * * * *

DBM6126@aol.com
Janet Evanovich's One For The Money. The quick retort and absurd view of life she depicts really amused me so that I really was 'lol.'

* * * * *

KGraetzRSP@aol.com
Bill Bryson's books always make me laugh out loud. I also find Richard Russo to have some good "laugh out loud" incidents in his novels.

* * * * *

DANNALAMB@aol.com
I RARELY laugh out loud while reading, but when I read Janet Evanovich's One for the Money, I laughed so often, my husband questioned my sanity. It was hilarious, as have been the others in her Stephanie Plum series. Keep them coming, Janet!

* * * * *

Annie161@aol.com
Without a doubt, I have laughed out loud with every single Janet Evanovich book.

* * * * *

JEarh13191@aol.com
James Herriot.

* * * * *

PDBlackCloudx2@aol.com
Dave Barry's books always make me laugh. Before his books, it was his newspaper column. Erma Bombeck was another author who made me laugh. How could you not love this woman? She could make the most mundane thing humorous. People could easily picture themselves in her shoes.

* * * * *

pagetrnr6@yahoo.com
Books lately that have made me laugh out loud are the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. They are the best!

* * * * *

Lily405025@aol.com
I remember laughing out loud a lot while reading Joseph Heller'sCatch-22. Unfortunately, this was on the train ride to work, so I got many strange looks. I decided to finish the book at home.

Another author who can always make me laugh out loud is S.J. Perlman. Sometimes, the titles alone are enough to crack me up. He was a very funny man.

I can't think of anything I've read recently that made me laugh out loud, which is really a shame, isn't it?

* * * * *

RKCKSYST@aol.com
John Irving makes me laugh out loud and at some of the most awful times imaginable, just because of the way he writes a scene. He's extremely clever and is an amazing wordsmith. You can see, touch, taste, hear and smell stuff he's describing --- and he's just incredibly FUNNY at times.

And Larry McMurtry, whom I consider to actually have some writing similarities to Irving, is absolutely hilarious at times. And not always is the laugh-inducing scene a funny one. It's just the way he writes them.

* * * * *

joswood@adiis.net
Carl Hiaasen comes immediately to mind. He has a wacky sense of humor.

* * * * *

Bjwire0123@aol.com
I think I have laughed out loud while reading the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich more than while reading any other book or author.

* * * * *

KeyofCToo@aol.com
Dorothy Cannell's books have an assortment of town characters that make me smile individually, but when she gathers them all together in the final chapters, I have to laugh out loud at the absurdities of the human race. How to Murder Your Mother-In-Lawis a typical example. Of course, there is no murder --- just wishful thinking without rancor.

* * * * *

Franky2131@aol.com
Nelson DeMille had me laughing out loud many times. He's a funny guy.

* * * * *

shamrockd@peoplepc.com
The author that makes me laugh out loud the most is Susan Isaacs, particularly in her book Compromising Positions. She has a way of telling it like it is in a humorous manner. Though I'm a library user primarily, she is one of the few authors whose books are on my "to buy not borrow" list.

* * * * *

Egantz927@aol.com
By far, Erma Bombeck has made me laugh (and cry) more than any other author. I think the funniest book I've read is one I haven't read yet --- they change with time. However, Crazy in Alabama (hated the movie) had me on the floor with laughter, calling up my friends reading passages. I must add that I had just left my former husband. I found a kinsmanship in the fantasy and hilarity of revenge plus Tupperware. It was very therapeutic --- as any good therapist will tell you laughter is.

* * * * *

Celeste162@aol.com
Bailey White's book, Mama Makes Up Her Mind, kept me chuckling. When I read her essay about attending a wedding, I laughed until I cried.

* * * * *

fran1999@webtv.net
Who makes me laugh? Donald Westlake and his cerebral leader, Dortmunder. The first one I read had Dortmunder out on a heist for furs. He climbed up on the second story of the fire escape and was busy trying to break in when he heard "Pst" over and over…from the alley below.

Well, it turns out it was his none to bright buddy trying to tell him they count the ground floor as the first and he was trying to break in on the third. I don't know how Westlake could write such a scene so funny but, in my mind, I could just see this pitch black alley, a burglar working hard trying to break in and the sound hissing up through the darkness to tell him he was on the wrong floor and the wrong door. I not only laughed out loud but had tears rolling down my cheeks.

Another time, I was reading The Mouse That Roared while under the dryer at the beauty shop and was laughing. I guess with the roar of the dryer I didn't realize what a racket I was making. I was finished and, when I came out and back to reality, I noticed women looking at me. Finally, the beautician asked what in the world I was reading that made me laugh so much.

I do enjoy a funny book and I have read that authors say one of the most difficult things to do is write a really funny book. I wish there were more of them!

* * * * *

JAMSTEIN@aol.com
Fannie Flagg has made me laugh out loud. My favorite is Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man.

* * * * *

white_nile@hotmail.com
Till We Eat Again by Judy Gruen is truly a LOL book. I enjoyed the writing, the subject matter and the style. Good stuff!

* * * * *

Kathryn.Havemann@lexisnexis.com
What author has made me laugh out loud the most? Definitely Joe Queenan. When I read his Red Lobster, White Trash, and The Blue Lagoon: Joe Queenan's America, I was gasping for breath in between non-stop laughing out loud. I laughed even more at his chapter on V.C. Andrew's Flowers in the Attic, which I happened to enjoy (until I read Joe Queenan and was instantly ashamed :)).

* * * * *

sharon.mostyn@brennanresponse.com
Any book in Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series makes me laugh out loud, especially when Stephanie is interacting with her grandmother!

* * * * *

Dorbashore@aol.com
Anne George's Southern Sisters mysteries are an absolute hoot! I laugh out loud while reading those, without fail! The interplay between the petite, practical, recently retired high school English teacher Patricia Anne and her bigger, bolder, buxom, thrice a widow and now millionaire sister Mary Alice is hilarious sibling rivalry, perfectly honed and rings so true you wish you knew these people. The critics sometimes think the mystery part is a little weak but you don't read these books for the technical craftsmanship of a Patricia Cornwell book. You want to read these books for the pure joy of getting back together with Patricia Anne and Mary Alice for another visit.

* * * * *

bowser@lancaster.lib.pa.us
He's an oldie but a goodie: P.G. Wodehouse always brings out the chuckles.

* * * * *

lnd19934@comcast.net
Any of the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich makes me laugh out loud, but the one that I laughed at the most (even when I was reading it in a group of other people waiting for a game to start!) was Hard Eight.

* * * * *

JANBAILEY@aol.com
The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love by Jill Conner Browne

Larry McMurtry.

There have been a lot of books over the years that have made me laugh out loud (most recently Beginner's Luck by Laura Pedersen). But the one that had me rolling on the floor at nearly every page was Winterdance by Gary Paulsen. It makes me laugh just thinking about it!

* * * * *

elow@gis.net
Any of Anne George's mysteries.

* * * * *

Abist@aol.com
Any Janet Evanovich makes me laugh out loud!!

* * * * *

nbobrick@cablespeed.com
Two come immediately to mind. Bill Bryson's The Lost Continent. It made me laugh so long and so often I couldn't read it in public. My husband was afraid he was going to be thrown off a plane because he was laughing so much over it. The most unexpected and well-placed piece of humor in a book goes to Diana Gabaldon's Drums of Autumn. After thinking they would never see each other again, Claire and her daughter Brianna are reunited. I was on the edge of my seat and the verge of tears when out of the blue Brianna offers a familiar line from a Monty Python routine. I keeled over laughing. It was a perfect moment.

* * * * *

marilyn.angello@us.mullermartini.com
The recent book I Don't Know How She Does It by Allison Pearson was hilarious. She wrote about how juggling motherhood, wifedom and career successfully is an almost impossible task in our world. In a very funny style of writing, she made me think about my life's priorities. I definitely laughed out loud in almost every chapter, and I didn't tell my husband why I was laughing either!

* * * * *

kcox@wiley.com
Janet Evanovich makes me laugh out loud the most, with Sparkle Hayter a close second.

* * * * *

polarbear90@attbi.com
Bill Bryson, Nick Hornby, P.G. Wodehouse, and Charles Dickens.

* * * * *

mtsantoro@netcarrier.com
I would have to say the Mammy trilogy by Brendan O'Carroll. It's just something about Agnes and her children that make you want to laugh one minute and cry the next. Also, the antics of her boyfriend are just a riot. I would have to add Detective Marino from Patricia Cornwell's Dr. Scarpetta books. You have to laugh at some of his antics. If you don't, you just want to slap him and slap him hard. He's the one adult who could beat any child in temper tantrums.

* * * * *

Neysa7777@aol.com
Larry McMurtry strikes my funny bone and I laugh out loud more at his midwestern humor than at any other author.

* * * * *

emerald@soltec.net
Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series has made me laugh out loud the most. I don't mean just a chuckle, I am talking really laughing! Great series!

Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys --- definitely one of the funniest.

* * * * *

Carly.Lombardo@amgpubs.com
I just finished Double Fudge by Judy Blume and it made me laugh out loud. Children's books are always clever and funny.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding also made me laugh out loud. And I will admit that people do look at you funny when your laughing while commuting.

* * * * *

lyd_80@hotmail.com
Judith McNaught.

* * * * *

berko_lad@hotmail.com
The book that last made me laugh out loud was one I purchased in England called Billy's Log by an author named Dougie Brimson. Written in the style of Bridget Jones's Diary, it examines life and relationships from a male perspective and has that rare quality of being laugh out loud funny and deeply moving. It is a bit 'English' --- not a bad thing for those of us who spend a lot of time there --- but I would happily and highly recommend this book to anyone.

* * * * *

aghayes@lakeww.net
Bring on the Empty Horses by David Nivens.

RedRodeoDo@aol.com
Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series never fails to make me laugh. In fact, when I was reading One For the Money (for the first time!) a co-worker asked what in the world I was reading because I kept chuckling. How can you not laugh at Steph's antics???

I recently listened to audio versions of Bridget Jones's Diary andBridget Jones: The Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding. Bloody funny!!!

* * * * *

TLWood61@aol.com
Fannie Flagg --- I just love her stuff!

* * * * *

RueMoo@aol.com
I was really laughing out loud when I read Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. I would wake up at night and, lacking anything better to do, I would pick up that book and read and laugh (belly laugh). I am also a person who reads the cards in the store and laughs out loud there too. :)

I believe the author who made me laugh the most was James Herriot, who wrote the All Creatures Great and Small series. There was so much humor in those books that I shall never forget the laughter they invoked. On the other hand, he also made me cry.

* * * * *

jean_r6@yahoo.com
The first author that comes to mind is Carl Hiaasen, with his very funny Florida- based politicallly incorrect books. The second author is Sue Grafton. I think Kinsey Milhone is one of the most amusing characters created.

SusanJ1776@aol.com
Susan Howatch.

* * * * *

vixw@adelphia.net
I can think of two books that I laughed out loud while reading, but I'm sure there are others: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen andAge of Innocence by Edith Wharton. I just love wit and clever observations in my literature.

A little off topic: when I was reading 1984 in high school, I actually dropped my book in shock at the point where Winston says "We are dead", Julia says "We are dead", and a voice behind the painting says "You are dead". Twenty-five years later that moment is still vivid for me!

* * * * *

SOPHIENED@aol.com
Both David Sedaris and Dennis Hensley are incredibly funny. I am laughing until the tears run down my face.

* * * * *

rafasmom@optonline.net
Janet Evanovich can always make me laugh. I'm a librarian, and when my readers ask me for a book to cheer them up and make them laugh, I tell them to try a little Stephanie Plum.

* * * * *

Mrsfitz196@aol.com
My answer to this question HAS to be It's My F---king Birthday by Merrill Markoe. I couldn't read this book in public, because people would have thought I was CRAZY with all the laughing I was doing!

* * * * *

MsLadyluckM@aol.com
It's a toss up for me. Female writer: Janet Evanovich. Male writer: Tim Dorsey and Carl Hiaasen. These are the three that really stand out and can make me laugh out loud no matter where I am or how inappropriate it would be! Great question!

* * * * *

Readnbks@aol.com

Juliet54219@aol.com
Terry Pratchett always makes me laugh out loud.

* * * * *

Clc323@aol.com
Although I have laughed out loud occasionally while reading over the years, one author has never failed to make me laugh every time I read one of her books: Janet Evanovich. Her Stephanie Plum series is absolutely hilarious and has had me laughing at times to the point of tears. There have been passages where I have to put the book down to compose myself before I can continue reading. Whenever I start laughing uncontrollably, my husband and my son know I'm reading "one of those books again." For pure entertainment, Ms. Evanovich can't be beat.

* * * * *

* * * * *

AUGER77777@aol.com
Dave Barry.

* * * * *

FalseMillennium@aol.com
I rarely laugh out loud when reading, unless the writer is incredibly witty. Martin Amis' novels have made me laugh out loud in certain passages, but one writer who made me consistently laugh was Patrick Dennis (Edward Tanner), and his side-splittersAuntie MameAround the World With Auntie Mame, and Little Me. To quote Patrick Dennis, "I always start writing with a clean piece of paper and a dirty mind."

* * * * *

M2451@aol.com
I would have to say that I laugh at almost every one of Carl Hiaasen's books. I have read them all (some more than once) and am amazed at the twisted mind that has created the characters and their situations. My second favorite thing to read and laugh at is the play The Importance of Being Ernest --- it is the best.

Jo Dereske, Anne George, Lilian Jackson Braun, and a number of others.

Carosp@aol.com
Richard Russo. I love all his books and they always make me laugh, even though they aren't essentially "funny" books.

* * * * *

While I'm not a big fan of his books, Dave Barry's weekly column almost always elicits a flat-out belly laugh from me.

* * * * *

Alanh2062@aol.com
Straight Man by Richard Russo kept me laughing from the bus to the office and back home. My fellow commuters must've thought I was a wacko.

Hard to chose:
Carl Hiaasen
Laurell K. Hamilton
Sue Grafton
Robert Asprin

* * * * *

CaptCarole@aol.com
The first one I remember reading and laughing out loud wasCatch-22 by Joseph Heller. I was reading it while on a train in Europe when I was 20. I was normally a quiet unassuming kind of kid who would read quietly. This book ended that! I kept bursting out laughing while reading that book.

* * * * *

bghayes@prodigy.net
David Sedaris. He's wet-your-pants funny!

* * * * *

DAVENAYMEG@aol.com
Books by Janet Evanovich always make me laugh. Jan Karon and her Mitford series make me laugh and cry!

* * * * *

Bookgranna@aol.com
Jill Conner Browne's Sweet Potato Queens series are the funniest books I've read in ages. When I read the first one, The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love, I laughed so hard I couldn't catch my breath. I found her naughty outlook on life and her irreverent attitude so refreshing and tintillating that I couldn't wait for the next chapter, just to see what her next subject would be.

* * * * *

Glennco99@aol.com
I feel that many books by Stephen King contain a lot of humor (to which I frequently laugh out loud) but for a really enjoyable, laugh-out-loud, gut-busting read, I pick up anything by Carl Hiaasen, especially Tourist Season or Native Tongue. I've read both of these over a dozen times each. I find it now takes less than an afternoon, as I am so familiar with them.

* * * * *

AvivaSara@aol.com
The author and her series that's made me laugh out loud --- and, I might add, fall off the couch while in this hysteria (twice, at least) --- is Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series. If ever anyone needs a good laugh and doesn't mind a bit of rough language, Stephanie Plum is the way to go. I highly recommend.

* * * * *

storm8810@yahoo.com
There are 2 authors that have made me laugh so hard that I'm left gasping for air and grabbing tissues for my eyes. Those 2 women would be Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton. I look forward to their new releases every year because I know I'll get a good laugh and thoroughly enjoy them. Ms. Evanovich and Ms. Grafton usually release their books in the warmer months, so I will take my book outside on my deck to read on nice days. My neighbors must think I'm nuts when they hear hysterical laughing coming from my yard and see me there by myself!!!

* * * * *

Dright2828@aol.com

BOTHELBIRD@aol.com
I can't remember exactly which Janet Evanovich book, probably more than one of her number books. I remember I was working on the switchboard, reading between calls and started laughing so hard, I had to go offline and stop reading. Most all of her books are the funniest I've read.

* * * * *

Mimiklein43@aol.com
Whenever I read any books by Dave Barry, I can't help laughing out loud.

* * * * *

Jessieface@aol.com
The author that makes me laugh out loud when I read him is David Sedaris. When I was reading his books Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day while at work during slow periods, I laughed so hard my coworkers thought I was crying in my cubicle because they could only hear me and they were partially right. I was laughing so hard I had tears rolling down my face.

* * * * *

Dgeadgmd@aol.com
Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. I have horrible luck when we go camping --- bad things ALWAYS happen to ME!! My husband and children remain unscathed. * * * * *

Helenme23@wmconnect.com

I laugh out loud while reading a book all the time! Two authors who make me laugh regularly are romance authors: Julie Garwood and Linda Lael Miller.

Lewis Nordan is the funniest author I've ever read, but there are two others that come fairly close: George Singleton and T.R. Pearson. As you can see, I'm into southern fiction.

Murder on a Girls' Night Out by Anne George. The two sisters and the way they talk to each other are so true to life!! I laughed out loud more than once --- in fact, all through the book. Afterwards, I read all her books. How sad that there will be no more books from Anne George.

Skipping Christmas by John Grisham was the only book that I can think of that had me laughing out loud. I woke my wife up at night in bed due to my uncontrollable laughter.

George Carlin's book, Napalm & Silly Putty, is the most hilarious book I have ever read. I have never laughed out loud while reading until this book, full of interesting views on the human condition. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in social issues/current affairs.

Stephen King has made me laugh out loud the most. During a very suspenseful and scary part of his book, he'll write something outrageous or one of his characters does something unexpected that is quite comical.

Two authors come to mind when I think about reading and laughing out loud. One is Nelson DeMille. Although I would classify him as a suspense/thriller author, he has a wonderful wit about him that keeps his books refreshing and fun. The other author I have laughed out loud at is Michael Chabon, specifically when I read Wonder Boys. Many books have brought me to tears, but I really value the ones that can make me feel good enough to laugh out loud.

Janet Evanovich!!! Her books are such a great lift of my spirits, taking me away from all the darkness and tragedy on the news. The first book I remember laughing out loud at was Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman. I was in my first or second year of teaching high school and it was so funny and so easy to identify with. I can remember vividly getting the attention of others in the house because I was laughing so much.

Our book club just finished Fannie Flagg's Daisy Mae and the Miracle Man.
We all admitted to laughing out loud! We also wondered, though, if you have to be from the South to find it as humorous as we did.

I am enjoying Till We Eat Again by Judy Gruen, and yes, it has made me laugh out loud. Anyone who has tried to diet and exercise their way to a svelte, or at least leaner, figure can appreciate Judy's wry view of the process and her willingness to poke fun at herself and the diet gurus as she goes through it. I haven't laughed this much while reading a book in a long time.

Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals and The Overloaded Ark can both reduce me to hysterics. Whenever I feel really low, I turn to them for sheer pleasure.

I used to consider myself a very "unemotional" reader. I mean that only rarely do I laugh out loud, or cry while reading a book. Movies, yes, all the time, but only sometimes with a book. Until I read Carl Hiassen. I started with Sick Puppy. His characters are so off-the-wall, yet believable, that you have to laugh at them and the episodes they find themselves in. I've also read others including Basket Case from Mr. Hiassen and chortled my way through it.

I never laughed hysterically while reading, though, until I readLamb by Christopher Moore. While reading this book, I found myself stopping and reading passages out loud to my husband (who is not a reader). He laughed out loud as well, so that's a great thing. An absolutely wonderful, sweet and funny read. This book should be read --- and read often!!

Firestorm by Nevada Barr has several incidences that occur and, with her quick wit, has turned a serious murder mystery into a "laugh out loud" mental picture. Also, Beginner's Luck by Laura Pedersen has some excellently written phrases that make one laugh.

Anything by Janet Evanovich. I am currently reading Alpine for You by Maddy Hunter and it is hilarious! I often eat at restaurants by myself, and when I am laughing out loud, I wonder if the other patrons think I am a little crazy!

Sue Grafton writes humorous descriptive situations that are so visual about her private detective character, Kinsey Millhone. While I may not be rolling on the floor laughing, she can tickle my funny bone with her frequently funny cultural observations and the endearing eccentricity of Kinsey.

My most recent and funniest laugh out loud book as been books by Janet Evanovich. She writes like she's just talking with a crazy aunt or sister. I very much enjoy her banter.

Peter DeVries in Tunnel of Love (I think it was) where the protagonist was a lapsed member of the church and, when a firework factory exploded one night and he thought it was the Second Coming, he ran into the kitchen, turned on the water and baptized himself in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost! I laughed until I nearly split a gut! But at any rate, all of his books had a measure of religion in them and he tweeked it in every book, making me laugh in all of them.

The only other one I laughed at was in The Hotel New Hampshireby John Irving, where the family pet, a dog, was stuffed when he died and put in the closet. Grandpa unexpectedly came upon the dog....and that was good for a huge guffaw in bed next to a sleeping husband, who was awoken by the same guffaw!

The author that has made me laugh the most is Fannie Flagg. Her characters are so believable and funny! She really has a knack for bringing the people in her novels to life. It makes me wish I had grown up in a town in her books.

Christopher Moore! I laugh from beginning to end in his books. I nearly drove my husband out of the house while reading Moore'sLamb because I snorted, chuckled, guffawed and roared through the pages!

The Agatha Raisin books by M.C. Beaton make me laugh aloud. One scene in Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage, she is in the bathroom in a pub and steps onto the sink to look out the window and the sink pulls away from the wall. Just knowing she is a woman in her fifties as I am even makes these books funny.

The most I ever laughed out loud while reading a book was while reading The Shipping News by Annie Proulx. This was everything I wanted in a book: rich characters, interesting plot, beautifully crafted language, and while largely dark humor, the part about the going away party was hilarious!!!

E. F. Benson's Queen Lucia series are hilarious, and after reading a serious or depressing book, I always pick up Lucia and read or re-read. Benson's satire on the British life is great and always uplifting. I can relate to many of the characters. I see them everyday. Anyone who has not read the six books should do so. They were out of print for a long time but now they can be purchased again. What luck!

I often laugh out loud while reading. I find that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer novels have such wit that I find myself often laughing at them. Christopher Golden is the author of most of them. As an adult, I find the humor in the novels very refreshing.

That's an easy one to answer: Till We Eat Again by Judy Gruen is by far the funniest read I've enjoyed in a long time. Who can't use a good laugh now and again? In this case, it was again and again and again. I don't know how she keeps it up for so long without tiring out/boring the reader. I became familiar with Ms. Gruen from her biweekly humor Internet column. It's one thing to maintain the humor throughout an occasional column; it's quite another to keep us chuckling along and turning the pages with alacrity (or, in my case, peanut butter and blue corn chips).

I read a lot, but I don't find myself laughing out loud very often. Perhaps the truest mark of Ms. Gruen's achievement is that I enjoyed the book --- a diary of fervent dieting in order to hold her own at a college reunion --- although I'm neither female nor on a diet. I'm surely not her target audience. So it's fair to assume that those of the female persuasion, who are currently embarked on the evergoing battle, will surely find the book extremely, uh, palatable.

Janet Evanovich is usually laugh out loud funny. It was summer when I read her last and the windows were open. As I was home alone and laughing out loud, I was afraid my neighbors would send "the men in the white coats."
