I'd have to say "THE LOVELY BONES" (Alice Sebold) would be my choice. It's a disturbing topic handled in the most enlightened way. Beautifully written and narrated, it's so different from anything else I've recently read. One of those rare first novels that gets it all right!

If you are going by sheer volume, it would have to be Auel's SHELTERS OF STONE, I did enjoy the read, however. My literary choice would be THE LOVELY BONES. I found that a pretty interesting twist and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Beyond a doubt, THE LOVELY BONES a first venture into fiction by Alice Sebold!! The ARC went into a second printing and only short months after it's release the book itself is in its 9th printing. It has also appeared for several weeks (so far) one the NY Times best seller list and has been selected for several of television's new reading groups!

For me is, without a doubt, SPANKING WATSON by Kinky Friedman. I happened upon this gem of a book at Border's where it was a remainder and I was able to own it for a mere $2.50!!! On another trip to Border's (where not only the books and literary ambiance but also their incredible Mocha Freeze sold in the cafe passionately and regularly call to me), I was very lucky to find Janet Evanovich's HOT SIX also sold as a remainder for only $3.50 !! Since I have been prematurely retired, I have spent much of this summer in a reader's paradise. Although I also thoroughly enjoyed the oft-cited favorites such as BEACH HOUSE by James Patterson, THE LOVELY BONES by Alice Sebold, WHITE OLEANDER by Janet Fitch, and GOOD IN BED by Janet Wiener, I am absolutely hooked on anything and everything by both Kinky (Richard) Friedman and Janet Evanovich, who both, thank God, have been rather prolific in their literary output. i like to read in my air-conditioned bedroom in bed, and (retired lady of leisure that I now am) be it at night or during the day --- for I rarely am able to put down any of their books before finishing them in one or two readings, I am want to laugh out loud --- especially, I must confess, with that master writer and inimitable comic, Kinky Friedman (who started out as a country singer). So, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to anything by either of these authors for light but robustly satisfying reading.

I have just finished reading GHOST SOLDIERS by Hampton Sides and it was absolutely astonishing. The suffering the prisoners endured for three years was beyond belief. The news that Stephen Spielberg is making this into a movie, with Tom Cruise to star, has me very excited. It will not be a pretty tail to tell, but one that should inspire. If not for that generation, we would not enjoy our current freedoms, which are once again being challenged. We should rest assured that another generation is willing to take their place & is currently laying their lives on the line for us. A must read for all Americans.

I have to pick two books: THE LOVELY BONES by Alice Sebold --- what a loving book even though the girl was murdered --- what happened afterwards is very touching. And, THE EMPEROR OF OCEAN CITY, by Stephen L. Carter --- what a tome --- from a very intelligent, literate author. It feels good to have read something of this caliber!

jutley54@yahoo.com
THE LOVELY BONES by Alice Sebold. I read it but didn't like it, however it's publicity is unbelievable!

THE LOVELY BONES.

martyph@charter.net
Surely it will be THE LOVELY BONES.

JoyZoo@aol.com
Has to be Alice Sebold's THE LOVELY BONES. I am enjoying it now. It combines the familiar serial killer and the fashionable life-beyond-death themes and produces something fresh. It is one of those books that is so readable that even when I think I am at a stopping place, I sneak a peak at the first few paragraphs that come next. The characters populating Susie's Heaven have not yet materialized into recognizable people for me, but Sebold has certainly nailed the earthly ones.

ltwilson@southark.cc.ar.us
Fiction: THE LOVELY BONES by Alice Sebold.
Nonfiction: SLANDER by Ann Coulter.

tonibonita@yahoo.com
My vote is for I'M TELLING by Karen Q. Miller.

GERBAM@AOL.com
In my opinion the Fannie Flagg book will probably be most popular and i am sure the movie is already in the making but my favorite books this summer are EMPEROR OF OCEAN PARK by Stephen Carter and THE ANALYST by John Katzenbach both are highly intelligent well plotted superbly written interesting thrillers but very different from each other if you enjoy a 'thinker's' book either of these will certainly meet your intellectual appetite enjoy.

Crudesgirl@aol.com
