I'm going to try to read some of those books I "should have read." I've got quite a range. It goes from Charlotte's Web and the Secret Garden to Sense and Sensibility and a few other Jane Austin if I can get to them (urged on by my 81 year old mother who has read EVERYTHING). I also just got a Willa Cather collection, a copy of Brave New World and since the original manuscript has sold for 2.2 million dollars, I thought I'd read On The Road. Think I can handle such a combination or will my head explode?!? Anyway, that's what I'm planning. We'll see how I do!

Well, seeing as how I will be in the trenches of 8th grade summer school, I get to read Scorpions, Call of the Wild, and Nothing but the Truth; I am also planning to tackle The Catcher in the Rye again (for some reason I hated it the first time I read it, but there is so much "angst" in my life right now I thought I would give it another go). You could recently see me carrying around The Art of War, which I referred to from time to time like a bible. I am taking the advice of someone and reading The Partner, and I will probably dust off Dali by Dali and try to get into that as well. Sick Puppy, by Carl Hiaasen should about round it out. Thanks.

First, and I have to confess I already read it, but "Close to Shore' is an unbelievably great beach read. But, also, I am hoping that Harlen Coben will come out with another book. Unfortunately, only because I don't think he is ready to publish another one yet, I just read Stephen Hunter's "Hot Springs" and I hope he comes out with another Swaggert book. Also, I'm breathlessly waiting for another Nelson DeMille.

Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" in anticipation of the mini-series on HBO; "For Whom the Bell Tolls" [I had to read it in high school now I WANT to read it]; Tom Clancy's "Rainbow Six"; Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" [now this should be on high school reading list] and Nelson Demille's "Word of Honor." If I get to read two or three of these books then I'll feel like I've accomplished something.

The Swedish series with Martin Beck, written by Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall (not sure of sp.). I read all the books years ago. Unfortunately, I don't own them - they were all loaned to me. Not even sure if they're still in print, but if they are, I recommend them highly. They are mysteries/police procedurals, all featuring the same characters.

I don't think my reading habits are that different during the summer than the rest of the year, but I do put some thought into deciding what book to take on vacation. Usually I choose a paperback that's been collecting dust on my shelf, perhaps something I read years ago that's due for a fresh look. The rationale for taking a paperback is first, that it's lightweight for toting around, and second, if I lose it, there's no fine from the library. For this year, I'm thinking about buying a new translation of Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" or a new version of "Charterhouse of Parma." I also have a paperback of Hawaiian ghost stories that I picked up on a trip to the islands last year, and that might be a good choice for occasions when I don't have a large block of time to read.

Every summer I reread everything LM Montgomery ever wrote (Anne of Green Gables, et al). Sometimes I read them in the order in which they were published, which I think is best, but sometimes I just reread at random. I don't always finish them all because sometimes a scene in one reminds me of another book and I go and read that one (LMM repeats plots quite a bit). I find this a very comforting activity, and it makes me feel like I've accomplished something when I read a whole book while aimlessly lying in the sun!
This summer I'm also planning on reading any Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters' books I haven't yet. I started reading her when I was 10 and am hopelessly addicted to EP Amelia Peabody series. Since The Lord of the Silent just came out and I finished it in one day, I'm going to listen to the whole series on tape to fill the void until next year. I think I'll reread some of the other Peters' books that I've read before, too.
Oh, and I have plans for Georges Duby's books about medieval life in France....
