I would recommend THE AGONY AND THE ECTASY, it reveals just how strong the church was is in Italy then, and how much power the Popes had over the people. Maybe still do. Then on the lighter side, THE GODFATHER is a good read, not just the crime, but the strong family ties are very evident. The life story of Lucretia Borgia was also very enlightening for me, again the power of the Pope.

When my grandson learned I was interested in researching my Italian Heritage he bought me THE ITALIAN AMERICAN FAMILY ALBUM by Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler. It's great!  Also, any of the Frances Mayes books on Tuscany are very good.

Does anyone read nonfiction?  There's a book by David Fischer called ALBION'S SEED.  It is a cultural history of the United States, dealing with the first four waves of immigrants to the U.S. from Britain - the Puritans from East England to Massachusetts Bay (1629-40); the Royalist elite and their indentured servants from the South of England to Virginia (1640-75); the Friends' migration from the North Midlands of England and Wales to the Delaware Valley (1675-1725) the residents of the borderlands of North Britain and northern Ireland to the American Backcountry (1717-75).

I would recommend NO GREAT MISCHIEF by Alistair MacLeod.  The novel illustrates the powerful hold of traditions and memory among modern Canadians.  Far from being a melting pot, Canada embraces other cultures and finds its own identity in the coming together of so many diverse heritages. NO GREAT MISCHIEF concerns itself with people descended from Scottish settlers.
