Somehow I missed Raymond Carver when he was still alive and writing. I came across his name in a review of a new book of his stories published recently by his wife. When I did a little more research, I found out that the rumor mill indicated his editor practically rewrote each of his stories in order to make it publishable. Intrigued by all this, I ordered 5 of his story collections (from Amazon.com, of course) and have been reading them. It's too early for a verdict since I like some of the stories quite well but others appear to have been "edited" beyond recognition.

There's an author from New Orleans named Nicholas Barnes. He's got two books out - "Thresholds" and "The Lost Writings of Steve Garvey." I came across his site one day while searching for books about New Orleans. I've read Thresholds and it's the freshest, edgiest novel I've read in years. Maybe too intense for some, but for me it was a welcome change from the dirdge of mainstream publishing. You guys need to start finding out about people like this instead of reviewing all the same books everyone else does.

I discovered Diana Gabaldon, who has 4 hugely adverturesome historic fiction novels that have a little time travel plus a sprinkling of romance to spice up the action. My Internet friends at a message area kept raving about her books. I might never have read them, since they are classified as romance.

I discovered Jeffery Deaver when The Book Report had a short review of his book The Bone Collector. I read the book and could hardly put it down. I told everyone about it (usually two or three times). I would get upset when those I told about the book didn't immediately read it. Actually, Jeffery Deaver may owe me some money for promoting his book so vigorously.

I remember reading about James Patterson on a message board. I tried one of his books and was hooked. I've read all the Alex Cross books. They are great!
