What is the best book you ever gave or received?

mcn@gci.net
The Lion's Game. I found the book exciting. The only comment I have is that the use of the scatological word used mainly in the beginning was offensive to me. I mention this because I I am not used to reading this word in other Nelson Demille books. Keep up the good work.

LenaEllis2000@aol.com
JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit

Minnie1217@aol.com
Without a doubt, A Prayer for Owen Meany would take top billing. While I don't much care for Irving's other works "Owen" has touched me like few other books ever have. Each re-reading of it seems to uncover some new aspect I missed on previous reads. I highly recommend it to any and all.

A few years ago, my son and daughter-in-law gave me Bill Bryson's A WALK IN THE WOODS. They knew my addiction to walking and hiking and thought this would be appropriate. Well, it introduced me to one of the funniest writers I have ever read. Bryson's humor, especially in his travel books, is extraordinary--the kind of humor that makes you laugh hard out loud and then want to read it to someone else, only you can't do it because you can't read it without laughing.

Hansey2@aol.com
The books I have and love most are Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass , Diana Galbaldon's Out Lander series and all of Robert Fulghum's books.

I was young and my family didn't have very much money. I went to a Christmas party sponsered by the VFW in my community. Each of us got to go up to Santa and he gave us a wrapped gift. Mine was a volume of my favorite Nancy Drew. I was thrilled but more important I felt special and looked after.......It was as if a trust was formed between me and providence.

Malaniek@aol.com
The best book I have every received is one I bought for myself. It is called "A Book Lover's Diary". I can record all the books I have read, want to read, reading group reads, etc... I love it!

I haven't given or received the "best" book yet. However, each year brings new opportunities. This year I am giving both of my adult daughters and my daughter-in-law copies of Frances Weaver's The Girls with the Grandmother Faces. Although only one is in her 50's now, all 3 have grown children who are moving away from home. Wonderful book.

Alcoholics Anonymous is the greatest book I have ever given or received.

DeladyV@aol.com
The best book I ever received as a gift was a hard bound, illustrated copy of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, given to me by my mother. I love this book, and it still has a place of pride in my person library after all these years. I, myself, have given this book as a gift, but the illustrated addition is no longer available in my local bookstores, and it just isn't the same. The story is sweet, by oh, those illustrations!!

Ewunja@aol.com
I love to give Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown to newborns. It's a classic that every child should have as it's first book. The parents always get plenty of clothes, carriers, etc. and rarely receive books.

DCCJ1@aol.com
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand: I received it as a gift many years ago and have given it to others many times since. It's my all-time favorite.

KJ4FM@aol.com
Bible

Traci5150@aol.com
My husband gave me a copy of Nicolas Sparks' "The Notebook" for Christmas 2 years ago. I read it in 1 day and cried my eyes out. It was the most romantic gift he's ever given me. Now, I've gotten a Nicolas Sparks novel every year for 3 years and I hope he can keep writing them at a rate that will make this a holiday tradition.

Moskow1@aol.com
The best book I ever received was a gift of Dr. Suess's "Oh, the Places You'll Go." Though it's ostensibly a children's book, it is absolutely profound and I received it at a low point in my life. The advice within was very uplifting.

Cnt410@aol.com
The Bible is the best book I have ever received...the story of the best gift ever given to us- Jesus Christ our Savior who died that we could have eternal life. Merry Christmas!

LeBlancm@SLU.EDU

EMAPRES@aol.com
COSMOS by Carl Sagan

RonnieHW@aol.com
When I Grow Old I'll Wear Purple is a book I've given a lot.

GL3P@aol.com
"Outlander",by Diana Gabaldon was my all time favorite. I average about five books a week on a good week. I read an assortment of styles and subjects as I work in a book store and am exposed to many great books. I find the exceptional research into history that Ms. Gabaldon delves into provides her writing a credibility that is informative as well as entertaining.

READRMOM@aol.com
I think the best book I have ever received is "Plum Island", I have been an avid reader ever since I was in 3rd or 4th grade, starting with Nancy Drew, being much older now and have read hundreds more books of varying authors, "Plum Island" has probably been the one I can recall most vividly and would re-read again and again.

Lcswimer@aol.com
My favorite book is Can you sue your parents for Malpratice? Because of the suspense.

BeepLater@aol.com
When I was in 4th Grade my brother-in-law gave me Madeline L'Engle's book: "A Wrinkle in Time." I was just enthralled by it, and remember staying-up well past my bedtime just so I could keep reading. Well it has been seven books, in the series, about nine rereads of "A Wrinkle in Time" and I still cannot stop telling him how thankful I am that he ever gave me the book
