Winter Reading 2020

At Bookreporter.com, we kicked off 2020 with our sixth annual Winter Reading Contests and Feature. We hosted a series of 24-hour contests spotlighting a book releasing this winter (or a recently published title that we would like to get into your hands now) and gave five lucky readers a chance to win it.

Even though our contests have wrapped up, we encourage you to take a look at this year's featured titles, as these are the books you'll want to read during the winter months --- and into the warmer ones!

The Last Romantics by Tara Conklin

February 2019

THE LAST ROMANTICS by Tara Conklin is the story of four siblings. It opens in the year 2079, which threw me at the beginning. I am not someone who enjoys futuristic books with a sci-fi feel, so I was trying to figure out why Tara opened here. It ends up it was to give readers a chance to look at the family and its dynamic way into the future. In the opening, Fiona Skinner, the youngest daughter in the family, is 102 years old. She is a poet of some renown for a poem she wrote called “The Love Poem,” which looks at the meaning of love. This opener gives her a vehicle to plunge back and tell her family’s story.

When the renowned poet Fiona Skinner is asked about the inspiration behind her iconic work, The Love Poem, she tells her audience a story about her family and a betrayal that reverberates through time. It begins in a big yellow house with a funeral, an iron poker, and a brief variation forever known as the Pause: a free and feral summer in a middle-class Connecticut town. The Skinner siblings emerge from the Pause staunchly loyal and deeply connected.

Box's WOLF PACK, which finds Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett encountering bad behavior on his own turf --- only to have the FBI and the DOJ ask him to stand down; THE SOURCE OF SELF-REGARD, a rich gathering of Toni Morrison's essays, speeches and meditations on society, culture and art, spanning four decades; and THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM, a remarkably intimate and insightful memoir that chronicles what it’s like to live in today’s world as a fat man, from acclaimed journalist Tommy Tomlinson, who, as he neared the age of 50, weighed 460 pounds and decided he had to change his life.
