Nightwork

NIGHTWORK, Nora Roberts’ latest romantic suspense novel, features the unforgettable Harry Booth, whom readers meet at the age of nine. An improbable genius, Harry takes up pickpocketing when his mother, who has cancer, and his aunt run out of resources. Smart and observant, he excels at the art of deception and eventually becomes a master thief who constantly reinvents himself whenever he is in a pinch.

"Nora Roberts has a natural talent for creating original characters and a true gift for storytelling. NIGHTWORK never fails to engage readers, drawing them through the suspenseful storyline, from the very beginning right up until the satisfying end."

After his mother passes away, Harry leaves Chicago, never staying in one place for too long. In New Orleans, a fellow thief named Sebastien befriends him and welcomes him into his family. Together they take on a job for hire, stealing for the disreputable Carter LaPorte. It isn’t long, though, before Harry is ready to move on.

This time he ends up at a college in North Carolina, with a new name and a new story. His life takes a sudden turn when he meets Miranda Emerson, a fellow student who is also the daughter of one of his professors. Harry thinks he just might have found the life he’s always wanted, but LaPorte has other ideas. He threatens Harry and vandalizes his aunt’s home, just to prove that he can. Harry goes on the run again, abandoning his new love and new life without a word.

Devastated by Harry’s sudden disappearance, Miranda continues her studies and pursues a writing career, eventually becoming a bestselling author. Research takes her to Virginia, where her godmother lives. To their shock, Harry and Miranda meet again in town. Harry is now a teacher at the local high school. Miranda demands an explanation, which he earnestly offers. The two plan to meet again. Could there be a second chance for this couple?

Unfortunately, LaPorte is still dogging Harry’s heels, and it isn’t long before he and his enforcers show up on their target’s doorstep. But Harry is wiser now and decides to take advantage of LaPorte’s illicit proposal to finally break himself free. If everything goes according to plan, he will have his life back and on his own terms. And he can finally be the man Miranda deserves.
