It feels like a million plus minutes since we were in touch last. Nikki was on her way to Jury Doodie, crossing her fingers the entire time hoping to get out of it. Carol definitely jinxed her when she said that it was summer and court was slow, so she was SURE Nikki would not be picked. Of course she was saying that as she knew we would be in trouble if Nikki was put on a trial. There is too much going on here for one of us to be out for long.

Lo and behold, the unspeakable happened and we lost Nikki for the better (Editorial note: More like worse! Womp womp womp...) part of two weeks. Under oath, she couldn’t divulge any juice about the insider ongoings of the NY Supreme Court leaving us to hold our breath until she returned. We didn’t get to hear anything about the criminal case until she was released...the only thing we knew was that this civic service (privilege) was no trip to Belize. Point is, Jury Doodie is real doodie (listening to testimony all day was mind-numbing!) and makes for endless days of awkward social interactions (as is you cannot talk about what you did all day), and Nikki did not come back with fond memories and BFFLs (or cotton candy --- running jokes!). But now that we’ve torn away the red tape, we can finally get back to business.

In case you thought Emily was just out-of-scene for all this (much like Flynn on this week’s episode of “Breaking Bad”), she was battling her own red tape (or green? or yellow?) at the eye doctor last week. Let’s just say that years of hiding BERENSTAIN BEAR books under her pillow and reading them after lights out have resulted in very advanced nearsightedness (Nikki can attest to this. As she does. Often.). Much to Emily’s chagrin, no humanitarian movement has convinced eye doctors to abandon the air puff test (YET), and once she recovered from that it was on to the color and depth perception tests. The Magic Eye-like color test was easy enough --- she passed with fl-eye-ing colors --- but depth perception turned out to be a real, two-dimensional brick wall. As in, it is possible to fail an eye exam --- but if you’re funny enough about it, they’ll give you a whole bunch of free contact lenses!

Truth be told, a real fear for the both of us is becoming cross-eyed. We both tear up a little when faced with the possibility. Emily brought the issue up with the doctor, who assured her that it was only a temporary sensation, and it came from staring at a screen for too long (there goes her social life!). Nikki, to no one’s surprise, was not surprised by this, and --- like so many Jewish grandmas before her --- said, “You really need a doctor to tell you that?” (Our very own Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman!) Needless to say, this has sparked discussions about how our generation will be physically affected by its excessive use of computers, and all technology for that matter. Shiny, new, pumped up with RAM computers might be a sight for sore eyes, but retina display? No thanks...the images are too sharp and there isn’t enough makeup to cover up our HD blemishes. We’re not looking forward to arthritic wrists (say that tongue twister 10 times fast), carpal tunnel syndrome, slouched blacks and strained eyes, so fingers crossed (at your own risk!) that we’ll have cures to match our ailments by then. Bionic cures for our bionic bodies.

As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, nature is doing us all a favor and dimming down the brightness. Don’t get us wrong, we love the sultry summer months --- the beach getaways, fresh watermelon, outdoor BBQs. Summer may have a lockdown on blockbuster hits, but fall is the reigning champ of television programming --- returning old favorites (“Homeland,” “Eastbound & Down,” “Boardwalk Empire”) and highly anticipated new series (“Masters of Sex,” “Dracula,” “Sleepy Hollow”) --- and of course, great reads to close out the year, including Margaret Atwood’s MADDADDAM, Julian Barnes’ LEVELS OF LIFE and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK author Matthew Quick’s FORGIVE ME, LEONARD PEACOCK. Fall also means back to college for all the young 20Somethings --- showing off your tan lines, stocking up on used textbooks and bonding with your crush in the library over the latest episode of “Breaking Bad” (seriously, where was Flynn?!).

And a BIG heads up as you all ride off into your respective Labor Day sunsets. Consider this: We’re looking for contributors over here at 20SomethingReads, and it could be you! Email Nicole (Nicole@bookreporter.com) or Emily (Emily@bookreporter.com) with any editorial ideas, writing samples, hopes, dreams, resumes, favorite ice cream flavors, and we’ll work with you to get you featured on the site. And believe me, once you get your first taste of Internet fame, there’s no turning back (basically “from Mr. Chips to SCARFACE,” except without all the drugs and violence). We’re also available via social media, so feel free to direct message us on Facebook or Twitter if that’s more your scene. We look forward to hearing from you!
