1924: The Year That Made Hitler by Peter Ross Range
Narrator Name: Paul Hodgson

Rating the Audio Performance
4
The audio version I think is better because it gives it more personality to the story. The story is read by a Brit, so if you have trouble with the accent it can be a little hard to follow but overall the story was read well.

If you are a history buff with an interest in WWII you will find this book very interesting. The author gives an account of the events leading up to Hitler's attempt to overthrow the German government, his trial and imprisonment. It was an eye-opener for me. Well written and documented.

All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
Narrator Name: Christopher Timothy

Rating the Audio Performance
5
Oh, the accents! This narrator had a very wide range of voices for the many, many characters, and I do mean characters, in this story. It's the story of a country veterinarian between World Wars. He was a large animal vet who met so many interesting country farmers who were all unique in their accents and their care for their animals. I never wanted this story to end. It made my commute into Philly each day a total delight.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline
5
I hardly have to explain the storyline because this is such a famous story. A young country vet becomes an associate to Tristan Farnam and begins his apprenticeship delivering calves and sheep and determining the many diseases and conditions of his clientele. Each chapter took on a different story with a different farmer. It had wit, gentleness and love.

A harrowing account of children raised by a mentally ill mother. I couldn't stop listening. As engrossing as Jeannette Walls' GLASS CASTLE, Regina Calcaterra's ETCHED IN SAND and Mary Anna King's BASTARDS. I really like listening to these kind of books.

I really loved this book. It was sad but also a really true love story. I had read THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY and this is the sequel to that story. I was really interested in learning Queenie's side of the story after learning about Harold's version.

All the Stars in the Heavens by Adriana Trigiani
Narrator Name: Blair Brown

Rating the Audio Performance
4
I thought Blair Brown did a wonderful job. Her accents were done well. It's not easy to do an Italian accent. Some performers are way over-the-top and ridiculous sounding. You don't believe it. Not so with Blair. Even if you didn't know anything about the book or author, she made the audio worth listening to.

The Pearl That Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi

Rating the Audio Performance

The performance was outstanding. The story was about Afghani women and what they go through, and the story was told in multiple voices. I was mesmerized. Sometimes, I didn't want to leave the car as I was listening to the audiobook as I was driving.

It is the entwined stories of two Afghan women, separated by a century, who find freedom in the tradition of bacha posh, which allows girls to dress and live as boys until they are of marriageable age, what her sisters go through, and the customs that keep women enslaved. Rachima and her sisters are sold in marriage to the family of a local warlord. Facing a dark reality with an abusive family, can she ever become accustomed to the way a woman must behave? Can she adapt and overcome like her great-aunt, Shekiba? And if she can't, will she survive? It is a compelling story, and hard to leave those thoughts behind. What a powerful read. This was one I won't soon forget!

A Common Struggle: A Personal Journey Through the Past and Future of Mental Illness and Addiction by Patrick J. Kennedy and Stephen Fried
Narrator Name: Johnny Heller

Rating the Audio Performance
2
I found this narrator's voice very annoying, rather nasal. His performance was fine, but I had trouble accepting the voice as Patrick Kennedy's.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline
4
Despite his life of privilege, Patrick Kennedy has had a tough life. His mother's alcoholism, his mother's, brother's, sister's and ultimately his father's cancer and the deaths of three of his cousins as young adults has taxed this young man who found solace, or at least relief, in both alcohol and drugs. In addition, he has been on the forefront of the struggle for insurance parity for those with mental and addiction diseases.

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach
Narrator Name: Emily Woo Zeller

Rating the Audio Performance
4
The audio version is very capably narrated by Emily Woo Zeller. She reads with enthusiasm, which increased my interest in the material. I think she must have been smiling through much of the narrative because she sounded so “happy” (if one can be happy about this subject). Certainly made me smile.

3.5 stars. Science writer Mary Roach tackles the human digestive system in this work of nonfiction. Roach entertains and informs as she reports on various scientific studies, in some cases interviewing the researcher, and/or participating in a re-creation of the study.

Unbecoming by Rebecca Scherm
Narrator Name: Catherine Taber

Rating the Audio Performance
5
I like audiobooks with accents, and this book requires Southern, French and (I think) Danish accents, which were carried off with aplomb by narrator Tabor. She had a good cadence throughout the book and voiced the internal musings of the main character to great effect.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline
4
I think I probably liked this book better as an audio. A friend had read it and thought it dragged a bit in the middle, as the author related the every day life of the main character. However, I see how this helped explain how she got herself in such a predicament, in trying to escape that life. I think the excellent narrator helped carry me through this section. The author made me think about the lies, small and large, that we tell in our lives and how the consequences can really end up to be terrible - a high price to be paid.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written coming-of-age story that takes place in Spencerville, Virginia. When the story begins, the protagonist, Rocky, is an eight-year-old and it is the late '70s. Rocky idolizes his older half-brother Paul and is devastated when his brother leaves home. Rocky narrates his story over the next decade providing insight into his own teenage years. An inappropriate love affair, a father felled by a stroke and even a murder, this book seems to have it all. The characters are all extremely well developed and the language rich and descriptive. I am looking forward to more of Mr. Tarkington's work.

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
Narrator Name: Reese Witherspoon

Rating the Audio Performance
5
Reese Witherspoon definitely does the story justice. She enunciates clearly but has enough of a southern drawl to lend authenticity to the dialogue.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline
5
I was in the middle of listening to this when Harper Lee passed away. I had put off reading it for a while because of all the controversial reviews. I am so glad I finally decided to read it because it does not disappoint. I think you need to put TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD out of your mind when you read this book and appreciate it on its own. Harper Lee does a wonderful job of presenting the complexities of characters.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Narrator Name: Sherman Alexie

Rating the Audio Performance
5
During the first chapter, I was not sure I would be able to listen to the entire book. The voice, speech, accent, and pacing of Sherman Alexie was a bit unusual compared to most audiobooks. However, I grew to love him. Nobody could perform this book better than the author himself.

I had read this book many years ago, so when it was chosen for my book club, I decided to try the audio version for a refresher. It was as good the second time around as it was the first. Arnold "Junior" Spirit tells his story of life on the Spokane Indian reservation beautifully. The issues of alcoholism, as well as social and economic obstacles makes the reader laugh and cry at the same time! A great book.

Platinum Doll by Anne Girard
Narrator Name: Leslie Carroll

Rating the Audio Performance
4
Leslie Carroll did a very good job in her audio performance of this book. She was engaging and was able to convey the male and female characters well. Her tone and cadence was pleasing to the ear. However, I did have one issue with one word that was mispronounced twice within a short period of time, but other than that she did a great job.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

4.5 stars. I am not a fan of old movies nor do I know much about movie stars of the 30s, but I absolutely loved this book! It is a "fictional" account of the life of Jean Harlow, who arrived in Hollywood as a seventeen-year-old married teenager, not wanting to be a star. But her looks got her noticed and fate stepped in. The term "platinum blonde" originated when describing the unusual color of her blonde hair! She was a woman of substance and extremely likable. The author also gives the reader an interesting look at those around Jean Harlow - her fame-obsessed mother, her husband, her stepfather, and movie stars of the time such as Oliver Hardy and Clark Gable. This was a fun read that never lost its pace. Well done!

Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

I have read all of Lisa Lutz Spellman series, which are light and just enjoyable, and so I thought I knew what I was getting into when I started this book! Whoa! This is so not a light and funny book. I almost don't know how I feel about the main character. I had times when I enjoyed and sympathized with her, and yet there are moments in this book that I really did not like her or her actions! So I am torn. Did this book keep my interest? Absolutely! Was I at times horrified by the events of this story? Again, absolutely. I could not figure out how Ms. Lutz was going to redeem this character or end this book, so again I was surprised.

Extremely interesting storyline. The story begins with two teenage cousins very seriously hurt after jumping out of their college dorm window because of a fire in their room. Lots of twists, turns, and secrets. Held my interest all the way through (which isn't always easy for some audiobooks). I couldn't wait to to find out how it ended.

Barbara
The Island by Elin Hilderbrand
Narrator Name: Denice Hicks

Rating the Audio Performance
1
I did not like the narration of this book. I felt the narrator read like she was reading to a young audience. Her inflections were to "sugary" and at time made me feel like at any minute she'd be saying "gee wow!" But worse than that, I had a real problem with her "mouth noises" - for lack of a better way to describe. I admit I have a real problem with listening to people chew, snap gum, etc. so I feel I'm probably more sensitive to those " mouth noises" than others would be. It was a struggle to finish listening to the end.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline
2
I've read a lot of Elin Hilderbrand's books and this was one of my least favorites. I think the premise of four women (two sets of sisters) coming together during a time that was traumatically emotional for one of them was great. I just don't think the storylines for each of the women went deep enough. They were superficial and too neatly packaged, which is fine for a nice light beach read but even taking that into consideration, I think what could have been a great read fell short.

5
Mazur was able to clearly differentiate characters and their attributes through inflection. It was seamless.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

As a major bookie, a well-crafted story involving a book store owner starts off well. Though I'm not a fan of fantasy, having the plot focus around alternative lives lived while waking/sleeping was a premise I was glad to follow. Set in the early1960s, there were some anachronistic elements that put me off a bit, but overall I followed Swanson's bread crumb-strewn path to the very end.

Wow. I don't know how I missed this book when it came out in 2012. This was a pretty near perfect novel. The writing was incredible with such rich and beautiful imagery. Set in a rural Appalachian town, the characters were interesting and the plot engaging. Global warming and climate change and its impact on the different socioeconomic classes was the backdrop for a great story with wonderful character development. A flock of monarch butterflies descends on a mountaintop in a desolate, rural town, something that has never happened before, and the lives of those living in the area are forever changed. The story held me rapt from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

I have to say this story is not something I would be interested in if I had read it in book form, but in audio version I can handle chic lit while commuting to work and doing Saturday housework. I enjoyed the story very much in that format. Yes, it reminded me of "Beaches" and the time period references (70s music, 80s fashion, TV shows and teen idols), was a bit over the top at times, but overall, I was entertained and recommended it to my best friend.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
Narrator Name: John C. Reilly

Rating the Audio Performance
5
I've listened to almost 200 audiobooks and Reilly's performance is now in my top 3. Although I've seen the movie and read the book, his interpretation made me feel like I was experiencing it for the first time. The character's voices were distinct - colorful, visceral – and the story seethed with emotion – the humor, introspection, sadness, etc. The entire gamut of feelings came alive with his reading. 100 stars!
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline
5
This book is a classic that looses not one iota with the passage of time. Listening to the book actually enhanced my appreciation for the skillful writing and the journey Kesey offers his readers. The setting is a mental asylum where R. P. McMurphy, a firebrand, but sane man looking for an easier life than a work farm, encounters a colorful cast of characters including Nurse Ratched (Big Nurse) and Chief Bromden, the story's narrator. There are laughs along the way, but be prepared to be shocked by the tragedy that looms large. 100 stars!

Tales of a Female Nomad by Rita Golden Gelman

Having a memoir read by the author is always special -- she brings that personal touch and understanding that an outside narrator doesn't always capture. The story is that of a young Intern, his childhood, life and love. Mostly it is the story of a man of many words who wanted to be a writer but was called to be a neurosurgeon. The grueling schedule and the complexity of cases is very interesting. I think at times it is too wordy and some of the dialog is not necessary, but the story is inspiring and yet realistic in that all of us at some point are going to die. This is what makes the novel so interesting. My deepest sympathy for Paul's family but I am thankful for his story and life. What a great man.

The reader invokes a different voice for each character. It is easy to recognize who is speaking at any one time. The women are portrayed as individuals through the vocalization of each one's accent. This is a wonderful and terrifying story of a mother and her young children who are forced to flee a war-torn Afghanistan when the Taliban take over, and try to make their way to England, where their extended family has settled. The story is told from two perspectives, that of the mother, Fereiba, and that of the older son, Saleem, who gets separated from his mother and his younger sister and brother in Greece and has to make his own way to England with no money and no documentation. The struggles, the enmity, and the horror that these characters face during their long journey is heart-wrenching. This story tugs at your heart. My only disappointment with the story was the way it ended.

This is good WWII literature that goes into great detail about Germans living in the Third Reich. The book is chronologically organized around four long chapters. He relies heavily on letters and diaries, which, along with the graceful prose we have come to expect from Fritzsche, provide dramatic evidence and a level of narrative coherence that make the book eminently readable from cover to cover. Recommend for people that are into reading WWII German literature.

Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl

Rating the Audio Performance

Bernadette Dunne does a marvelous job performing the audio version of this book. She has reasonably good skill as a voice artist to give the various characters unique and believable voices, though her 4-year-old Nicky sound like an adult imitating a little boy. Her pacing is good, and she even makes the recipes sound interesting.

This is Reichl’s memoir of her tenure as a restaurant critic for the New York Times. I loved her stories of the various restaurants, but what I really appreciated was a glimpse at her growth as a person. A delicious memoir, and I devoured every word.

The story weaves the tale of the life of Frankie from birth to death and all things in between. He travels the world with his music. It is like an odyssey with many twists and turns, and fate plays a hand...or so it seems. The writing is beautiful and it was one of very few books I did not want to end. Be sure to listen to the credits at the very end -- interesting. Also, I find that many books have very long tracks, 20+ minutes. It's difficult to pick up if I have to shut off the machine as it goes back to the beginning of that track. This book had about 10-15 minute tracks so it was easier to find my place again.

A touching and sad memoir written by a doctor who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer during his neurosurgical training. His attitude was inspirational. The doctors, his colleagues, who treated him, seemed to ask the right questions to make the end of his life more meaningful, which was a subject touched upon in a book I recently read, BEING MORTAL. He was able to stay connected with people that were important to him and to participate in surgeries, which was his life's calling, until the very end, and did not allow his sickness to define him.

Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

I think Allende is a wonderful storyteller. Her stories are perfectly paced and they are never simple. THE JAPANESE LOVER is many stories wrapped into one -- the 70 year love affair between Alma and Ichimei is poignant. The love and friendship between Alma and Nathaniel is heartwarming and heart-wrenching. The relationship between Seth and Irina, which starts when they meet during Alma's old age and become interested in Alma and Ichimei's relationship, saves both of them. A rich story that, in the end, is all about love and redemption in all its forms.

Gilbert does a masterful job of creating a unique voice for each of the quirky characters in this wonderful novel. Both poignant and laugh-out-loud funny; Johnson's novel is filled with quirky characters trying to find their place in the world. At the heart of the novel is the special bond that forms between nine-year-old Frank and Alice, the young publicist sent to care for him while his mother, a reclusive author, works on her new novel. Despite a few humorous bumps along the way, Alice and Frank help each other discover that life is much richer when we learn to love and trust each other. A charming coming-of-age novel with great heart.

I am not a fan of this narrator at all. First off, he speaks entirely too slowly and takes way too many long pauses. This book could have been read in an hours less time! But the worst part is that he's so determined to have a separate and defining voice for each character, that he goes completely overboard. Some of the secondary characters are so off the wall that they sound like cartoon characters. Will definitely not be listening to another book read by this narrator.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

I was really disappointed in this book. I love mystery series so was excited to start this series since there are so many books to it. But this book was 90% weird romance novel and only 10% actual mystery. So much of the time was devoted to Anne Corley that it was obvious she had to somehow be connected; otherwise it was the weirdest offshoot ever! And the explicit sex scenes, to me, were so distracting. I've read my share of romance novels so I'm not against sex scenes - but in a murder mystery?! I think it's a little ridiculous. And especially since, in my opinion, it didn't do anything to compel the story along. If the writer wanted the sex scene, one would have been plenty. But there were 4 or 5! I don't think I'll continue the series.

We listened to Book One of this series for a battle of the books competition that my daughter was in. The first book kept us entertained on long car rides and we really enjoyed the storyline, so once the competition was over we had this book on our radar for the next one we wanted to listen to. It is the story about a village in which everyone is made beautiful when they turn 16. Everything is perfect in this village to the point that it is figured out that the people that run the village make it so everything is perfect. A few of the 16-year-olds figure out what is happening and try to alter there existence, which is dangerous to the harmony in the village.

Jerry Battle is the narrator of this character-driven novel. It is his unavailability – emotionally and physically – that colors all the relationships he has. Children were anticipating a happy day including an Easter egg hunt at elderly socialite Vivan Van Vorst's estate. The day was spoiled, and the Easter hunt was cancelled when the Easter Bunny dropped dead while trying to open the gates to let the children in. It was the beginning of a mystery that peaked the interest of Lucy Stone, reporter for the Pennysaver. Was it a natural death or a clever murder? There is another death, and Mrs. Van Vorst's affairs are taken over by a granddaughter who claims she is incompetent. The estate and Mrs. Van Vorst both suffer when the granddaughter and her husband become penny pinchers. All of these details lead to a complicated, thought-provoking mystery.

Delaney does a wonderful job with all the voices, but especially the storyteller's voice. Of course, it doesn't hurt that his Irish brogue makes you feel like you are in Ireland! He moves the story along, and the pathos in his voice as he brings Ronan and his story alive, is wonderful.

This is a wonderful book. If you like stories and storytelling you will love this book. It is a tale of Irish history through stories -- from the beginning of Ireland, through St. Patrick, to the Easter Rebellion. The "under" story does not get in the way, but, instead, reiterates how important stories are in our lives, how they shape us, and how they make us who we are. Each of us has his/her own story, and that is really the only story that we can tell.

There are two different periods and settings in this book. One is contemporary and is set in a town near Mobile, Alabama. The other is during World War II and starts out in Wisconsin and then moves to Oklahoma and other parts of the U.S.A. The two time periods are connected by one character, Fritzi Gerdabalinsky. Fritzi learned to fly before the war and when the U.S.A joined the war she wanted to contribute. She joined the WASPs, a volunteer group of women who ferried airplanes from the manufacturer to wherever they were needed for the war effort. In the contemporary period, Sukie Poole learns in her late 50s that she was adopted and that her real mother was Fritzi. Her journey of self-discovery is heart-warming and funny.

Unfortunately for me once I start a book (even if I hate it) I usually finish it. And I hated this book. I am trying to think of a redeeming factor and I can't. Additionally, it was so repetitive. I find it hard to imagine writing a full book about one person or one family trying to get pregnant month after month without success and month after month saying, "I'm going to tell someone" but not doing it for years and years and years without someone trying to change the system besides just running away. Perhaps, I was just so insulted and repulsed by the subject matter itself that I couldn't enjoy anything about this book; not even the characters. Also, I do believe this book was based on fact of the beliefs and rituals of this sect.

I enjoyed this debut mystery. There were a few twists along the way and while the ending was a little too pat and I had to suspend disbelief a few times, I still enjoyed Joe, his autistic brother and Lila so much I added a star. Joe is a fantastic character. As a writing assignment for class, Joe visits a nursing home and takes on the task of interviewing Carl, a Vietnam vet who was imprisoned for 30 years for the rape and murder of a young girl. Suffering from terminal cancer, Carl now resides in a nursing home to live out his final days. As Joe learns Carl's story he begins to doubt his guilt and sets out to clear his name. From there, the story takes off with enough twists in the story to keep me interested.

But is vigilantism the way to go? NYPD Detective Billy Graves is a guy just trying to do his job, raise his family and take care of his retired legend of a father, Billy Sr. He’s investigating a list of Whites who are being knocked off like Christie’s THEN THERE WERE NONE. Additionally, someone is threatening his family. Character driven with a vivid backdrop of NY. Harry Brandt is the pseudonym of Richard Price. I’m not certain why. One of the best crime novels I’ve read in a long time. Hope to see more of NYPD Detective Bill Graves.

This is an explosive and well researched book on the .1% of the wealthiest of the wealthy and how their money has influenced elections and outcomes of elections across the USA. Mainly tells about the Koch brothers and their influence over Supreme Court decisions, governors' races, committees in the House and Senate, Senate and House elections and even small local elections. All done with the intent of keeping and preserving their vast and almost unimaginable wealth. This was not an easy read. I frequently had to turn it off, walk away, take a shower and eventually came back to it, cleansed and ready to get into the dirt again. It opened my eyes but I was appalled as well. They are very secretive and kept well under the radar.

Immoral by Brian Freeman
Narrator Name: Joe Barrett

Rating the Audio Performance
2
The audio performance could have been great - if the narrator didn't feel the need to go WAY overboard with the accents. The main part of the book was set in Minnesota, so he felt the need to give each character an extreme Minnesotan accent. They sounded like they were straight from the set of the movie Fargo. It was so distracting! And it was hard to take the characters seriously because it made them sound almost comical. But the accents didn't stop there. Then he had to give a woman from Phoenix a strong southern accent (really?!), and a Hispanic man a very pronounced Hispanic accent. It was just too over the top. I enjoyed his reading when he was using his regular voice but did not enjoy the rest.
