Beatriz Williams Book Group Event
May 31, 2025
This year has been such a great one for reading. I know that I can barely keep up, let alone get ahead. I feel like every week there is another book that I want to discuss with my group.
We will be reading SALTWATER by Katy Hays for our next discussion. Then, for the following month, we already have decided that we will be talking about THE MARTHA’S VINEYARD BEACH AND BOOK CLUB by Martha Hall Kelly. A few of us met Martha a couple of years ago at an event that took place at the Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden, so selecting her book, which is just out this week, was an easy decision. (See the guide later in this newsletter.)

The evidence against him was more than circumstantial, but when grilled about it, he preferred to be coy. Schmidt’s reference to a painful moment in Tracy’s life leaves her sputtering and looking to lash out. Read More

How we present ourselves to the world is at the core of AUDITION. In her third novel, Katie Kitamura gives us a middle-aged actress, Maya, who has run the audition circuit and is in rehearsal for a premiere. But don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a story about the entertainment world. It isn’t. Acting is key to the book, but it’s more about the roles that we assume in real life versus those played out on the stage or screen. Read More

Two people meet for lunch in a Manhattan restaurant. She’s an accomplished actress in rehearsals for an upcoming premiere. He’s attractive, troubling and young --- young enough to be her son. Who is he to her, and who is she to him? In AUDITION, two competing narratives unspool, rewriting our understanding of the roles we play every day --- partner, parent, creator, muse --- and the truths every performance masks, especially from those who think they know us most intimately.

About the Book
One woman, the performance of a lifetime. Or two. An exhilarating, destabilizing Möbius strip of a novel that asks if we ever really know the people we love.

Taut and hypnotic, AUDITION is Katie Kitamura at her virtuosic best.
