In "The King's Justice," a stranger dressed in black arrives in the village of Settle's Crossways, following the scent of a terrible crime. He even calls himself "Black," though almost certainly that is not his name. The people of the village discover that they have a surprising urge to cooperate with this stranger, though the desire of inhabitants of quiet villages to cooperate with strangers is not common in their land, or most lands. But this gift will not save him as he discovers the nature of the evil concealed in Settle's Crossways.
The "Augur's Gambit" is a daring plan created by Mayhew Gordian, Hieronomer to the Queen of Indemnie, a plan to save his Queen and his country. Gordian is a reader of entrails. In the bodies of chickens, lambs, piglets, and one stillborn infant he sees the same message: the island nation of Indemnie is doomed. But even in the face of certain destruction a man may fight, and the Hieronomer is utterly loyal to his beautiful Queen --- and to her only daughter. The "Augur's Gambit" is his mad attempt to save a kingdom.

A homegrown icon, Fisk rapidly became the face of one of the most storied teams in baseball, the Boston Red Sox of the 1970s. Fisk's game-winning home run in Game Six of the hotly-contested 1975 World Series forever immortalized him in one of the sport's most exciting televised moments. Sadly, THE BLOODFORGED, the second in Erin Lindsey’s epic fantasy series, does little to engage; instead, it offers up a listless rehashing of genre tropes. While I bow down to beautifully crafted characters, to page-turning plotlines with thoughtful dips and bends, to words that flow to their own beat, sometimes, it's the setting that really breathes life into a story.
I recently had the chance to hear David Almond speak --- you’ve probably heard me wax poetic about his book THE TIGHTROPE WALKERS throughout 2015, and our reviewers Sarah Rachel Egelman and Alison S. have equally gushing thoughts about HALF A CREATURE FROM THE SEA and A SONG FOR ELLA GREY, respectively. One common thread in Almond’s titles --- aside from his lilting language --- is their inextricable tie to northern England, the area where he grew up.

October 2015Hello! I bet the major thing on your mind right now is Halloween --- making last-minute fixes to your kids' costumes, coming up with a responsible schedule for candy consumption so you don't have to spend thousands at the dentist office, carving pumpkins to look like ghosts...the list is endless. While the 31st is certainly dominating my brain as well (I'm going to be the the famous Jeff Goldblum, wearing lots of gold-painted "blooms" and a name tag that says Jeff...genius!), there is something else that has been competing for mental space this October: Series (books, not baseball, despite all of the Mets mania here in NYC)!
