The idea of a subgenre known as “Tartan Noir” --- dark Scottish crime fiction --- might seem a bit of a stretch. I mean, the reflexive impression of Scotland for a lot of people, including myself, consists of fog, hills, bagpipes and, um, unusual food, with two large industrial cities plunked down in the middle of it all. Crime? What crime? Lots of it, apparently. According to the United Nations, Scotland is the world’s most violent developed country. Read More

Nate Colgan is a violent man, a “smart muscle” for the Jamieson organization. But now, with its most powerful individuals either dead or behind bars, things within the organization are beginning to shift. When Nate is reluctantly appointed its new “security consultant,” he can little imagine how things are about to unravel. It begins with an execution, and soon the various factions within the organization are sent into chaos. But out of the confusion comes one clear fact: a new group has arrived in Glasgow, and in their quest for power they are prepared to ignite a war. But who is behind the group? And why has the calculating Zara Cope --- the mother of Nate's child --- suddenly appeared back in town?

About the Book

From the award-winning author of The Glasgow Trilogy comes EVERY NIGHT I DREAM OF HELL, a dark and thrilling Glaswegian crime drama.

Nate Colgan would be the first to admit that his violent reputation makes him very good at his job --- and bad at everything else. After 18 years spent working on the sidelines of Glasgow's criminal underworld, there's no question he'll accept the central position that Peter Jamieson's organization offers him, despite his better judgment. The organization isn't as strong as it once was: its most powerful members are either dead or behind bars, including Jamieson himself, and the time is ripe for change.

Chang begins with an execution --- a message for Jamieson's supporters --- which promptly sets the various factions within the organization against one another. Colgan's position as "security consultant" means his duty is clear: identify the killer and find out who's willing to seize power, even if it means igniting a war. Meanwhile, on the other side of the law, DI Michael Fisher conducts his own investigation into the murder. Both men can't help but wonder: Why do these events coincide with the return of Zara Cope, the mother of Colgan's child, a disreputable woman with an uncanny ability to attract trouble and troublemakers?

A dark and thrilling crime drama, EVERY NIGHT I DREAM OF HELL takes us deep into a world of violence, fear and double-crosses.

Ben Sanders may be from New Zealand, but he gets the United States in a way that few authors do, even those of us born and raised here. He demonstrated this conclusively in 2015’s AMERICAN BLOOD, his US debut and introduction of Marshall Grade to the literary world. That very worthy book was set in the American southwest; its successor, the newly published MARSHALL’S LAW, takes place primarily in New York. Read More

Ex-undercover cop Marshall Grade is hiding out in California when he learns that federal agent Lucas Cohen has survived a kidnapping. Cohen was Marshall’s ticket into witness protection, and his captors have a simple question: Where’s Marshall now? Marshall’s undercover work gave him a long list of enemies, and the enemy in this case is a corrupt businessman named Dexter Vine. Vine is almost broke, in debt to people even worse than himself, and he wants to settle old scores while he has time. He’s hired Ludo Coltrane --- a nonchalant psychopath and part-time bar manager --- to find Marshall at any cost. Ludo is no stranger to killing, but his associate, the cash-strapped ex-con Perry Rhodes, may prove more of a liability than an asset.

I was thrilled to see that Amy Sarig King, who also publishes under the name A.S. King, had written her first middle grade novel, as young adults (and the adults who love to read young adult literature) have been blessed with her work for some time now. King is an author who I have had my eye on ever since reading her young adult fantasy novel, THE DUST OF 100 DOGS, which I still look back on with a “Huh, that was weird, but so good!” Read More

Obe Devlin has problems. His family's farmland has been taken over by developers. His best friend Tommy abandoned him for the development kids. And he keeps getting nosebleeds, because of that thing he doesn't like to talk about. So Obe hangs out at the creek by his house, in the last wild patch left, picking up litter and looking for animal tracks. One day, he sees a creature that looks kind of like a large dog, or maybe a small boar. And as he watches it, he realizes it eats plastic. Only plastic. No one has ever seen a creature like this before, because there's never been a creature like this before.

The comparison to Jack Sparrow does not go undeserved with Tricia Levenseller’s debut young adult historical fantasy novel, DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING. This novel follows Alosa, the Pirate Princess, on her journey to carry out one of her father’s missions. In order to do that she must play the part of a prisoner in an enemy ship. Unfortunately for her, the first mate, Riden, seems to carry just as much fire as her and will stop at nothing until he figures out what she is hiding. Read More

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map --- the key to a legendary treasure trove --- seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship. More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

Teen Board Question - April 2017, Part 2

Here at Teenreads, we're in a spring break frame of mind. If you ask us, one of the best parts of reading is getting to travel to far off places you've only dreamed of --- without spending all of your money or having to pack (or overpack). While we're feeling springy and fun, we asked our Teen Board members which fictional or real setting from a book they would you love to visit for spring break --- and why?  As a bonus, we also asked them to tell us what sort of fun activities they would enjoy and which awesome characters they'd see.
