I was very sad to hear the news of writer Peter David's stroke at the end of 2012. He's been one of my favorite writers ever since the early '90s, and his work has always been marked by clever wit and solid craftsmanship. If you're near the Boston area, you may want to check out this cool movie series. Books to Film, sponsored by both the Boston Book Festival and Emerson College's ArtsEmerson, will take place on October 27, and it will feature films based on works by several authors who are appearing at this year's Boston Book Festival. Interestingly, the Books to Film series will feature both novels and graphic novels that inspired big-screen fare.

The day before New York Comic Con breaks loose, the long-running ICv2 conference will bring its insights and opinions to light in an afternoon conference that explores the growth and outreach of the graphic format. I'm eager to attend again this year, as it's always fascinating to hear founder Milton Griepp's analyses, as well as to attend the panels that follow.

Three lucky libraries will win a fantastic prize at this year's American Library Association's summer conference in Anaheim, California. The Will & Ann Eisner Foundation has announced a contest that will award libraries with $1,000 worth of Eisner Award-nominated books, $2,000 in a voucher to be used to buy more graphic books, and a $1,000 stipend on top of all that to go toward an event or signing featuring a graphic novel creator.
