In this newsletter, you will find books releasing the weeks of June 29th and July 6th that we think will be of interest to Bookreporter.com readers, along with Bonus News, where we call out a contest, feature or review that we want to let you know about so you have it on your radar.
This week, we are calling attention to our current Word of Mouth contest. Let us know by Friday, July 10th at noon ET what books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win THE SHAMPOO EFFECT by Jenny Jackson and SINGLE GIRLS by John Searles, both of which will be Bookreporter.com Bets On picks.
Bruce Holsinger joined us last Wednesday evening for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event. We discussed his national bestseller, CULPABILITY, which was a Bets On selection when it released last July.
This suspenseful family drama is about moral responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence. Bruce offered many interesting tidbits about the origin of the book’s plot, title and cover art, and he described the moment when he found out that it was going to be an Oprah’s Book Club pick.
Six readers joined the conversation on camera with questions about Bruce's storytelling and comments on how AI has quickly infused our lives. They also talked about how they related to the novel’s various characters. We closed out the program with Bruce sharing what’s next for him.
Please note that we are taking July and August “off” from our “Bookaccino Live” Book Group programs. We will be back in September!
Carol Fitzgerald's latest Bets On pick is Lisa See's new novel, DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON. It centers on three Chinese women whose unexpected friendship helps them survive and, despite the odds, thrive in the turmoil of post-Civil War Los Angeles.
Here's a preview of Carol's commentary:
Lisa See is well known and respected for her fiction that includes a little-known story of historical significance, as well as one of female friendship. DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON brilliantly does just that.
The novel is set in Los Angeles when it was a dusty pueblo town in 1855. The idea for the book came to Lisa over 30 years ago as she was doing research for her nonfiction work, ON GOLD MOUNTAIN. She saw details about the Night of Horrors, which occurred on October 24, 1871. An angry mob of roughly 500 white and Latino people attacked the city's Chinese quarter, murdering 19 Chinese men and boys.
The story stayed with Lisa, and around it she constructed a narrative based on four women who were known to have lived during that time, making one into a composite character.

TEACH THE TORCHES TO BURN by Christina Dodd (Historical Mystery)
If I, Rosie --- blushing bride, noted cynic and sleuth --- were asked to identify when the pre-wedding events spiraled out of control, I’d point to that moment when elderly Princess Ursula observed the display of gleaming swords and bared teeth and announced that she would hold a public séance to determine the future of the marriage. With the aid of Yorick’s skull and her own considerable dramatic nature, Princess Ursula prophesied three things: the marriage would be joyous and fertile, a long-lost treasure would be found…and a foul and most unnatural murder would disrupt the fragile peace of Verona. As one death follows another, and it’s clear a skilled poisoner lurks among us, I use all my wit and skill to discern the reason for the vendetta and uncover the killer’s identity.

JFK: Public, Private, Secret by J. Randy Taraborrelli (Biography)
More than the story of a presidency, this is an intimate study of a man whose public triumphs were shaped --- and at times overshadowed --- by the complex realities of his private life, from his legendary family to his marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy. The book draws from hundreds of interviews conducted over 25 years --- as well as candid, first-hand oral histories from the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Presidential Library, rare internal reports from the Secret Service, detailed files from the National Archives, and intelligence documents from both the CIA and the FBI. This is JFK as never before captured by history: brilliant yet fallible, revered yet human --- a figure whose legacy continues to shape America and the world.
