If you are a fan of Nordic crime fiction and are limited to English as your reading language, then you already know that it will take even the most vociferous reader years, if not a lifetime, to catch up on the backlists of authors from that region. Anne Holt is one such writer; enormously popular in her native Norway, her work has been published here sporadically and parsimoniously. That is about to change, at least with respect to her Hanne Wilhelmsen series. Read More

From Norway's #1 bestselling crime writer comes a suspenseful locked-room mystery, the U.S. debut of a new series, set in an isolated hotel where guests who are stranded during a monumental snowstorm begin turning up dead.

About the Book

From Norway’s bestselling female crime writer comes a suspenseful locked-room mystery set in an isolated hotel in Norway, where guests stranded during a monumental snowstorm start turning up dead.

A train on its way to the northern reaches of Norway derails during a massive blizzard, 1,222 meters above sea level. The passengers abandon the train for a nearby hotel, centuries-old and practically empty, except for the staff. With plenty of food and shelter from the storm, the passengers think they are safe, until one of them is found dead the next morning.

With no sign of rescue, and the storm continuing to rage, retired police inspector Hanne Wilhelmsen is asked to investigate. Paralysed by a bullet lodged in her spine, Hanne has no desire to get involved. But she is slowly coaxed back into her old habits as her curiosity and natural talent for observation force her to take an interest in the passengers and their secrets. When another body turns up, Hanne realizes that time is running out, and she must act fast before panic takes over. Complicating things is the presence of a mysterious guest, who had travelled in a private rail car at the end of the train and was evacuated first to the top floor of the hotel. No one knows who the guest is, or why armed guards are needed, but it is making everyone uneasy. Hanne has her suspicions, but she keeps them to herself.

Trapped in her wheelchair, trapped by the storm, and now trapped with a killer, Hanne must fit the pieces of the puzzle together before the killer strikes again.

Donato Carrisi was primarily known as an Italian screenwriter, but in 2009 turned his hand to writing. His debut novel has just been published as THE WHISPERER in the United States. It is a groundbreaking book of sorts, in the sense that it takes standard elements of the thriller and horror genres and stands them on end, rearranging them in unexpected ways. The result is a haunting work that pokes and prods into crevices that are not immediately visible, that are overlooked and ultimately unpleasant. Read More

About the Book

Six severed arms are discovered, arranged in a mysterious circle and buried in a clearing in the woods. Five of them appear to belong to missing girls between the ages of eight and 18. The sixth is yet to be identified. Worse still, the girls' bodies, alive or dead, are nowhere to be found.

Lead investigators Mila Vasquez, a celebrated profiler, and Goran Gavila, an eerily prescient criminologist, dive into the case. They're confident they've got the right suspect in their sights until they discover no link between him and any of the kidnappings except the first. The evidence in the case of the second missing child points in a vastly different direction, creating more questions than it answers.

Vasquez and Gavila begin to wonder if they've been brought in to take the fall in a near-hopeless case. Is it all coincidence? Or is a copycat criminal at work? Obsessed with a case that becomes more tangled and intense as they unravel the layers of evil, Gavila and Vasquez find that their lives are increasingly in each other's hands.

James W. Hall has assembled an amazing cast of characters for this complex story set in southern Florida. There are the artsy types who work around the cable TV series “Miami Ops”: Gus Dollimore, a marginal producer/director who sees the show as his last shot at the A-list; Daniela Diamond Dollimore, his ditzy daughter and star of the program; Sawyer Moss, who does the scripting, while his twin, Flynn, plays the male lead; and April Moss, the twins' mother who writes obituaries for the local newspaper that seem connected to the serial killer's timetable. In award-winning author James W. Hall's latest thriller, the reclusive Thorn must confront an assassin whose victims and methods are taken directly from the script of a popular TV show.

About the Book

April Moss writes obituaries for the Miami Herald. Her son, Sawyer, also a writer, has been scripting a cable TV series called “Miami Ops” and has been using his mother’s work as a central element of the show's storyline. In “Miami Ops,” a serial killer is using obituaries published in the local paper as a blueprint for selecting his next victims.

But midway through the season, a copycat appears off-screen, a real-life killer who is using the same strategy to select victims. When this serial killer crosses paths with the reclusive Thorn, he has no choice but to leave his sanctuary in Key Largo and join forces with a young policewoman from Oklahoma who is investigating the murders.

In addition to the show’s head writer, April’s other son, Sawyer’s twin brother, works on “Miami Ops” as the lead actor. Could one of them be involved in the killings? Or are they orchestrated by the director of the TV series, an aging mogul who badly needs a hit? And what about the female star of the show, a deliciously strange young woman who seems willing to do anything to promote her career.

Thorn walks into this hotbed of entertainment business intrigue totally unprepared for the life-altering shocker he’s about to face. This loner from Key Largo has brought down his share of killers, but he's never confronted one that was his own flesh and blood.

With the pacing of a thriller, and the lyrical prose for which Hall is renowned, this story pits Thorn against a killer --- or killers --- whose motives are as elusive as their identities.
