The Doomsday Equation

The Doomsday Equation

Matt Richtel has enjoyed success not only as an author of both fiction and nonfiction books, but also as a prize-winning technology reporter for The New York Times. His latest work of fiction, THE DOOMSDAY EQUATION, features ripped-from-the-headlines action and storytelling that infuses his knowledge of modern technology and its effect on the world around us.

The unique protagonist is a computer genius named Jeremy Stillwater. Like many misunderstood geniuses, Jeremy has little to no social skills and difficulty interacting with people. He is bull-headed and defiantly independent, and standing by the theory produced by his latest algorithm. This program predicts global conflicts on a regular and extremely accurate basis.

"THE DOOMSDAY EQUATION provides non-stop action and well-researched technological facts that will chill readers who recognize just how close to reality this fictionally created threat may really be."

Trouble occurs when Jeremy's algorithm reveals that the planet only has three days to avert an outbreak of World War that could cause massive loss of life on a global scale. The problem is that no one believes Jeremy --- not his Silicon Valley financiers, his government watchdog handler, Andrea, or his girlfriend, Emily. His only ally is his colleague Nik, who he refers to as Peacenik --- and even Nik is left mostly in the dark with Jeremy's mad scramble to save the world.

Following this story line is a separate plot line featuring a female terrorist named Janine.  We first see Janine freeing a lion from the San Francisco Zoo, putting innocent people in extreme danger. She represents a group called Neturei-Karta, which was originally formed in 1938 by a group of Orthodox Jews. Their name literally means “Guardians of the City” in Aramaic, and these self-proclaimed guardians are all about smiting their enemies at any cost.

Meanwhile, Jeremy is desperately trying to locate the person or organization responsible for the upcoming global attack. Jeremy is a true loner and looks at people like Steve Jobs as being lazy for hiring others to do his engineering. As a result, one of the former colleagues he alienated is a man named Evan, who is now working for a company called SEER. When Jeremy's mentor is found dead, he immediately thinks that Evan and SEER may be behind it. All the while, Jeremy is oblivious to the Guardians and just how close to him they may actually be.

THE DOOMSDAY EQUATION provides non-stop action and well-researched technological facts that will chill readers who recognize just how close to reality this fictionally created threat may really be. Matt Richtel has quite a unique creation in Jeremy Stillwater, who is so bizarre and secretive that readers will spend much of the time wondering what his actual intentions are.
