Shattered

When the top-notch law firm she works for in Lexington,
Kentucky, goes bankrupt, promising young attorney Lisa Grant finds
herself abruptly unemployed. With her mother recently diagnosed
with a serious, life-threatening disease, it seems like a
no-brainer to return to her childhood home, a Kentucky horse farm
called Grayson Springs, and care for the woman who raised her.
Unfortunately, the only job to be found in her field is a position
as a research assistant to her lifelong crush, District Attorney
Scott Buchanan.

While Lisa grew up with everything money could buy, Scott was a
boy from the wrong side of the tracks. With an abusive, alcoholic
father and no support to speak of, Scott is left to find his own
way through life. Luckily, he was a fighter and pulled himself out
of a situation that would have crushed a lesser man. Now he has it
all together --- with a good job, a nice home and all the creature
comforts. The one thing he doesn't have, however, is love.

When Lisa misses an important appointment, Scott demotes her to
the Siberia of the DA's office. As if it wasn't bad enough to be a
research assistant with a law degree, she is now working in the
basement loading cold cases into a computer system. Could life get
any better than this?

While performing this unenviable task, Lisa comes across a file
for a family missing since 1981. The Garcias --- Michael, Angela,
and their children, Tony and Marisa --- disappeared, never to be
seen again. An interesting case in and of itself, it becomes even
more fascinating when Lisa discovers a photo in the file. She looks
identical to Angela and possesses a childhood doll that’s
exactly the same as the one little Marisa is holding. Is there a
connection between Lisa and the missing family, or is it just an
amazing coincidence?

Before Lisa can sink her teeth into this mystery, tragedy
strikes at Grayson Springs, and her life is thrown into turmoil.
From one harrowing event to another, it becomes apparent that
someone doesn't want Lisa delving into the past, and they are
willing to do whatever it takes to stop her dead in her tracks.
Emphasis on dead!

In spite of the fact that Lisa has a boyfriend, the sexual
tension between Scott and herself is ablaze, and it's all they can
do to keep their hands off of each other. When circumstances force
them together, the feelings between them flame out of control. They
are both fighting a losing battle trying to deny themselves to each
other, and they know it. Now there's nothing left to do but combine
forces to get to the bottom of the mystery that threatens Lisa's
very life more and more each day.

Karen Robards has outdone herself with this absolutely amazing
read. The Kentucky country setting is alluring and effortlessly
transports the reader to another, more appealing place. The sexual
attraction between Lisa and Scott is palpable; if any woman who
reads this says she doesn't want Scott for herself, I'll call her a
liar. After all, what woman hasn't known a powerful, sexy man who
drives her to absolute distraction? And last but not least, the
mystery of the missing Garcia family and Lisa's possible connection
to them is nothing short of riveting. Clear your schedule when you
read this one because you will not want to put it down.
