As the sole survivor of the suspicious car crash that killed the First Lady of the United States, criminal defense attorney Jessica Ford has had to change her identity and appearance in order to stay alive. When she wins a high-profile rape case in court, she's thrust into the public eye again and immediately becomes the target of a violent attack. The problem is that Jess has a lot of enemies, and it's hard to pinpoint if the attack is related to the First Lady's death or any of the several cases Jess has previously handled.

While Jess is injured in the attack, the consequences are not dire. Mark Ryan, Secret Service agent and Jess's ex-fiancé, comes to her rescue before she is irrevocably injured. Once upon a time, Mark was the one man Jess was wild about. In fact, she had almost overcome her commitment phobia to become his wife. Unfortunately, the day she found him entwined in the arms of her boss, Mary Jane Cates, killed all hope for a future with the sexy, smart-mouthed agent who had protected her from death several times before when they were on the run.

In spite of her desire to distance herself, however, it looks like Jess is stuck with Mark for the time being. That's okay though, because there's another part of her that wants nothing more than to curl up in the warm safety of his strong arms and stay there until the storm is past. It looks like she's going to get plenty of opportunities to do just that if events proceed as expected. As the plot thickens, Jess realizes that if she wants to stay alive, she's going to have to let Mark back into her life --- and into her heart.

The death of the First Lady isn't the only problem that dogs Mark and Jess. A pair of runaway teens with a connection to a female lawyer from Jess's firm, who has mysteriously disappeared, only adds to the adventure.

JUSTICE is a riveting novel and continues the story that began with Karen Robards's previous effort, PURSUIT. While the former can be read easily as a stand-alone, you'll probably want to pick up the latter as well, if you haven't already. You'll be able to enjoy the string of events that brought Mark and Jess to this point and extend your time with this fun, passionate couple.

Jess and Mark don't live in a vacuum, though, and her problem-laden younger sisters and quirky, man-loving mom all make an appearance in JUSTICE. The familial aspects combine with the Washington, D.C. setting, high-powered law offices, courtroom drama and high-stakes adventure to give us a well-rounded picture of Jessica Ford.
