If I Ever Get Out of Here

Lewis Black lives in New York on the Tuscarora Indian reservation. His life on the "rez" is far from glamorous. His mother works hard everyday to make ends meet because his father left without looking back. As a result, his house is shabby, to say the least. He's never owned a new set of clothing. Despite the lack of allure, this is the life that Lewis knows and loves.

"In IF I EVER GET OUT OF HERE Eric Gansworth has a brilliantly written tale of growth and change. Gansworth does an amazing job creating a fun, one of a kind story filled with lovable characters, classic rock and a taste of a way of life exclusive to a select few."

The year is 1975. Lewis is starting his second year of middle school in the school's class for the "smarties." Being the only American Indian in the class is a challenge. People don't expect much of him. The other kids refuse to befriend a boy from the rez. This all changes when George Haddonfield moves to town.

George doesn't care what the other kids say. He and Lewis form a bond almost instantly over their love for Wackies and anything musical, particularly if it involves The Beatles. These mutual appreciations are the start of a friendship that is sure to leave a great impact on the boys' lives. Together, Lewis and George deal with bullies, girlfriends and many other perils of those middle school years while getting glimpses into each other's foreign worlds.

In IF I EVER GET OUT OF HERE Eric Gansworth has a brilliantly written tale of growth and change. Gansworth does an amazing job creating a fun, one of a kind story filled with lovable characters, classic rock and a taste of a way of life exclusive to a select few. Readers will feel as though they are living on the Tuscarora rez in the '70s.

IF I EVER GET OUT OF HERE is a coming of age story that everybody can relate to, music lovers especially. Readers will no doubt be content at the end of this spectacular read. Eric Gansworth's first young adult novel is in no way a disappointment. IF I EVER GET OUT OF HERE is simply magnificent.
