Instead of Counting Sheep...Read...
My new wetsuit is a huge success in the water; I spent an hour and a half working out both last Saturday and Sunday. On land, it’s another story. Getting in and out of it is an extra 15 minutes of a workout; I wonder if anyone has ever gotten a sports injury while tugging themselves in or out of their wetsuit, especially tripping while extracting one’s feet. I was cautioned to sit down for this. I was googling tips, which included spraying Pam on my wrists/forearms and ankles. Um…no! When I googled, the tips were all provided by triathletes. Relax, there is no way I am running or biking beyond the treadmill and my recumbent bike.

My friend, Cathy, came over for a visit last weekend. You may remember that this summer some of you had shared suggestions on authors for her to binge read. She printed out the list and asked me to thank all who contributed to it. She is kicking off her author binge with Linwood Barclay after noting he had the most votes. That said, she will be working her way through many of your recommendations. She also will be keeping up with her current favorites, including Harlan Coben. She had HOME downloaded at 12:01 the day it came out and stayed up 'til the wee hours for a few nights reading --- and this was one of her big textile market weeks!

My husband did the same with Gregg Hurwitz’s ORPHAN X, which he just got to a few weeks ago, though it released back in January. He was bleary-eyed more than one morning, and when I handed him an advance copy of THE NOWHERE MAN, the second book in the Evan Smoak series, which is coming on January 17th, he clocked another few late nights, even walking away from watching baseball to read. ORPHAN X was a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection, so those of you who want to prep for THE NOWHERE MAN, you may want to tee that up now!

Losing sleep over books is better than lying down, staring at the ceiling and counting sheep!

After last Friday’s author luncheon, I rushed to read THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACE ON EARTH, a novel by Lindsey Lee Johnson, which will be in stores on January 10th. It’s set in privileged Marin County, CA, and is told through the eyes of a group of high school students and their young teacher. It was a quick read and a smart look into the lives of teens today. It will be an interesting choice for book groups to discuss this, as I agree with the author that there are some parallels between high schoolers today and those when I was in high school, though once you layer in the drama of social media today, the stakes are ramped a lot higher. I think this book has crossover appeal to YA readers, especially those who are millennials, not that far removed in age from the characters in the book. I look forward to reading more from Lindsey in the future.

On Wednesday night, I went to an industry event and by pure chance met Min Jin Lee, the author of FREE FOOD FOR MILLIONAIRES, and the upcoming PACHINKO, which will be in stores on February 17th. She was a complete delight, and we will have much more to share with you about PACHINKO in the weeks to come. All attendees of the Hachette Book Club Brunch are being sent copies of the book, so we will have our reporters’ feedback about it!

Now to this week’s update…

The boss is on the run! Bruce Springsteen’s memoir, BORN TO RUN, reminds us that the man seriously has a way with words. In 2009, Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so impactful that he decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humor and originality found in his songs. BORN TO RUN will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Springsteen, but this is so much more than a legendary rock star’s memoir. It’s a book for workers and dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, outsiders, and anyone who loves rock and roll.

According to reviewer Rob Bentlyewski, a huge fan of The Boss, "BORN TO RUN is honest and extraordinarily humble for a rock star’s memoir, and it reaffirms the authenticity that makes Springsteen beloved by millions around the world." In the photo above, you can see Bruce with my good friend from my Mademoiselle magazine days, John “Rock ’n’ Roll” Messina (nicknamed by me, as he loves music and going to concerts --- and always posts great photos and videos from them), who is a HUGE Bruce fan. He was at the on-sale-day event in Freehold, NJ, where he waited two hours to get his photo op and signed book. He was very impressed with the way Barnes & Noble handled the crowd control for this event; it went really smoothly. For those wondering, there will be an audiobook narrated by Bruce; he’s been touring with the band and for the book, thus we do not have a confirmed date for that yet. But I will share as soon as we have it!

We recognize Elizabeth Vargas as the co-anchor of “20/20” on ABC News. She now candidly explores her struggle with alcoholism and her path to recovery in BETWEEN BREATHS: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction. Vargas discusses her accounts of growing up with debilitating anxiety --- which began abruptly at the age of six when her father served in Vietnam --- and how she dealt with this anxiety as she came of age, to her eventually turning to alcohol for relief. She describes how she found herself living in fierce denial about the extent of her addiction, and how she kept her dependency a secret for so long. She also addresses her time in rehab, her first year of sobriety, and the guilt she felt as a working mother who had never found the right balance.

Reviewer Christine M. Irvin says, "[Vargas] tells quite a moving story; her writing style is very personal and insightful, and you can almost feel her pain. She holds nothing back, sharing all her guilt, anxiety and fears with the reader."

Two Women’s Fiction Author Spotlights wrap up this week with reviews and interviews for these featured titles. First up is Robyn Carr’s THE LIFE SHE WANTS. Emma Shay is living the dream --- until her financier husband commits suicide. Richard Compton stole his clients’ life savings to fund a lavish life in New York City. Although she was never involved in the business, Emma must now bear the burden of her husband’s crimes alone and is left with nothing. Only one old friend stands by her and encourages her to come home to Sonoma County. But starting over isn’t easy, and Sonoma is full of unhappy memories, too. Now, trying to stand on her own two feet, Emma can’t escape her husband’s reputation and is forced to turn to the last person she thought she’d ever ask for help.

Rebecca Munro has this to say in her review: "Robyn Carr paints an emotional, engaging portrait of two former best friends and their wildly different life paths. With her signature talent for character development and passion for women’s stories, Carr pens a truly heartwarming novel that will make readers consider their biggest regrets." Rebecca also had the pleasure of interviewing Robyn, and you can read their conversation here.

Next up is MENDING FENCES by Sherryl Woods, which originally published in 2007, but has been re-released because the issues that the book raises are (sadly) so timely. Emily Dobbs and Marcie Carter have been best friends for many years. But that friendship will be put to a major test when it’s revealed that Marcie's son, a college freshman sports star, is arrested for date rape. As the Carters try to wrap their heads around the unthinkable, Emily discovers that her daughter has been hiding a terrible secret --- a secret that threatens the futures of both families.

Megan Elliott has our review and says, “The epidemic of sexual assault on campus is in the media spotlight, and MENDING FENCES tackles the difficult subject with grace and sensitivity… Woods is adept at depicting the complicated relationship mothers have with their children and the way those relationships can change as they grow up.” We also have an interview that Megan conducted with Sherryl, which you can read here.

Other books we’re reviewing this week include THRICE THE BRINDED CAT HATH MEW’D, which marks the return of Flavia de Luce in a new Christmas mystery from award-winning author Alan Bradley; IRENA’S CHILDREN, in which Tilar J. Mazzeo recounts the amazing true story of Irena Sendler, who risked her own life to save 2,500 children from death and deportation in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II (click here to read a Q&A with the author); and THE BIRTH OF A NATION: Nat Turner and the Making of a Movement, the official movie tie-in companion to The Birth of a Nation, which will be in theaters on October 7th.

News and Pop Culture:

Reader Mail: Ann wrote with a question about our newsletters and shared this: “I love every email from you all!! I will continue to read and treasure all that comes from Bookreporter. I will buy more bookcases.” I quipped back that maybe we should give away bookcases!

Ingrid wrote this lovely note from the Netherlands: "Just finished reading your weekly newsletter with a big smile on my face. A big big thank you for all your great reads on either Friday nights or Saturday mornings! I love reading about your personal life, at times irresistibly funny, moving and often simply recognizable (my husband, too, is an enthusiastic golfer, my two daughters bring me joy, and sometimes anxiety as well, and being a secondary school teacher, I recognize the busy and sometimes tight schedule, although you seem to possess an infinite stamina!), the great books you share, the knitting stories, the tips on Netflix series (btw have you heard of the great 'Velvet' series, a truly romantic, funny and fashionable story about a renowned department store in Madrid in the 1950s?), your love for your parents, which you show through pictures and stories (they remind me of my 95-year-old mum, who I love so dearly but is definitely getting more fragile), your life in NY (a city we experienced in 2014 and loved!), and last but not least, you strike me as such a nice lady who I claim to know a little and even think of as a friend overseas, crazy as it may sound!” I think of our readers as friends and love hearing about their lives. I love her suggestion about the "Velvet" series. And if I visit the Netherlands, Ingrid will be getting a call!

Sharon wrote, “Had I read your latest email sooner, I would have asked for a list of questions to answer when I attended the National Book Festival in DC this year. I live in Maryland and work in DC, so I attend this event every year and am never disappointed. I had the pleasure of meeting Harlan Coben, who is ever so charming. He took his time with each person standing in line to get his autograph, he was happy to be in pictures with the readers, and he chatted about your favorite book and why. I also met Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kristin Hannah, Geraldine Brooks and Salman Rushdie, all of whom were absolutely fabulous with their readers. I look forward to who will be there next year! Thank you for your newsletter; I appreciate everything you and all your staff go through to put this together for us.”

A Yarn Store on Wheels: I love this --- a mobile home as a knitting store.

Smart Television Show: I highly suggest that you watch "This is Us" on NBC. It’s moving to Tuesday at 9pm ET next time it airs. Terrific premise that is pulled off so very well. Twists that work in both episodes.

"Pitch": Another television debut on Fox that is well done; will see how it goes.

Love This from Italy: Young adults in Italy are given $600 to spend on books, music and movies.

On the Subject of Race: David Joy, the author of WHERE ALL THE LIGHT TENDS TO GO, has an essay here that is interesting reading.

Tonight my husband and I are headed to Morristown, where Sebastian Junger is the keynote speaker at the Morristown Festival of Books. Tomorrow I am moderating two morning panels at the Festival and am looking forward to seeing some of our readers there. Be sure to introduce yourselves if you are going and see me there! Yes, I will be wearing turquoise!

Also, here’s news that we will have more about in the weeks to come. I am doing a panel for book groups at the Miami Book Fair International on Saturday, November 19th at 10am, where my special guest will be Gayle Forman, whose latest book, LEAVE ME, was published earlier this month!

Next week is New York Comic Con, which is sure to keep my schedule busy for a few days. Greg is headed to Switzerland for a week on Tuesday with a terrific itinerary. Tom is headed to compete in the BMW Golf Championship on Wednesday. I am going to relish some downtime!

Happy New Year to those who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah next week. Have fun celebrating!

Read on, and have a great week.

Tilar J. Mazzeo is the New York Times bestselling author of multiple nonfiction books that tell stories of strong, resourceful women in impossible situations. In this interview, Mazzeo opens up about the joys and obstacles of historical storytelling, including --- as is the case with her latest book, IRENA’S CHILDREN, about a real-life social worker who risked her life to save 2,500 children from the Holocaust --- becoming emotionally attached to her subjects. She also discusses why the telling of history, be it personal or national, can never be subjective.

Audiobook available, read by Amanda Carlin

In 1942, social worker Irena Sendler was granted access to the Warsaw ghetto as a public health specialist. While there, she reached out to the trapped Jewish families, going from door to door and asking the parents to trust her with their young children. She started smuggling them out of the walled district, convincing her friends and neighbors to hide them. Driven to extreme measures and with the help of a network of local tradesmen, ghetto residents, and her star-crossed lover in the Jewish resistance, Irena ultimately smuggled thousands of children past the Nazis. In IRENA’S CHILDREN, Tilar Mazzeo tells the incredible story of this courageous and brave woman who risked her life to save innocent children from the Holocaust. Reviewed by Barbara Bamberger Scott.

Women's Fiction Author Spotlight: THE WANGS VS. THE WORLD by Jade Chang
THE WANGS VS. THE WORLD by Jade Chang (Fiction)
Charles Wang is mad at America. A brash, lovable immigrant businessman who built a cosmetics empire and made a fortune, he’s just been ruined by the financial crisis. Now all Charles wants is to get his kids safely stowed away so that he can go to China and attempt to reclaim his family’s ancestral lands --- and his pride.

Charles pulls Andrew, his aspiring comedian son, and Grace, his style-obsessed daughter, out of schools he can no longer afford. Together with their stepmother, Barbra, they embark on a cross-country road trip from their foreclosed Bel-Air home to the upstate New York hideout of the eldest daughter, disgraced art world it-girl Saina. But with his son waylaid by a temptress in New Orleans, his wife ready to defect for a set of 1,000-thread-count sheets, and an epic smash-up in North Carolina, Charles may have to choose between the old world and the new, between keeping his family intact and finally fulfilling his dream of starting anew in China.

Outrageously funny and full of charm, THE WANGS VS. THE WORLD is an entirely fresh look at what it means to belong in America --- and how going from glorious riches to (still name-brand) rags brings one family together in a way money never could.

Leading her quest is a desire to understand the source of the writer’s inspiration. Do subjects haunt those that might bring them back to life until the writer submits? Or does something "happen" to us, a sudden ignition of a burning flame? Can the appearance of a muse-like Other bring about a writer’s best work? ASYLUM: A Survivor's Flight from Nazi-Occupied Vienna Through Wartime France by Moriz Scheyer (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Robert Blumenfeld and Peter Ganim

Perhaps if Sam would have just said something, anything, about what happened that night, but Sam still seems unable --- or unwilling --- to utter a word about the accident. And now, 23 years later, Sam's own nine-year-old son has disappeared. Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.
