I could easily argue that the first few weeks of September are the best of the year. Even though it means that we won’t be seeing new episodes of GOT (and the potential for Kit Harrington’s bare butt on TV) for quite a while, there’s a lot of other things to look forward to. Labor Day weekend marked the unofficial end of summer, so now it’s officially the time to usher in fall and, with that, a new TV season. The season is filling up quickly, so be sure to find some side time to consume pumpkin-spiced things and come up with a few Halloween costume ideas. For those of us in the Northeast, here’s your yearly reminder: Autumn is super short and super sweet, and no one should be left squeezing it all in before winter comes. For those readers in all the perennially mild climates, the grass is always greener on the other side.
Quite possibly the hottest couple in the television circuit finally makes its triumphant return in “Outlander” on September 10th on Starz. The on-screen chemistry between Caitriona Balfe (Claire) and Sam Heughan (Jamie) is fiercely palpable, and the pair is undoubtedly going to steam up the screen once again in the third season of the book-to-screen megahit series by Diana Gabaldon. Watch the trailer here. If you love romance and period-piece dramas, and haven’t watched one single episode of this series, then you are definitely missing out. The visually striking duo is absolutely divine to watch in motion and in conversation. On top of it all, whispers have been swirling for years that they’re dating IRL with neither ever confirming or denying. Truthfully, the ceaseless rumor mill only adds greater fuel to the fire. Maybe it’s a genius ongoing publicity stunt to maintain interest, or maybe it’s true, real-life love. Either way, I’m falling for it and lapping up every second of it. As the people say: Teamwork is the dreamwork.
If murder-mystery grit is more your thing, then you’re in luck. The much anticipated “Mindhunter” is finally debuting on Netflix on October 13th. Watch the trailer here. Based on the book MIND HUNTER: Inside FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas, the series follows two FBI agents as they interview (read as: psychoanalyze) serial killers and rapists in 1979. The new show is executive produced by a number of hotshots in the business, but most notably, Charlize Theron (everything awesome with a ton of a$$kicking) and David Fincher (Gone Girl, Fight Club, Seven, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). In essence, there’s going to be overly suitable musical interludes, masterful plot twists, perfectly developed characters and casually brilliant tinges of satire scattered throughout. Oh, also, it’s already been renewed for a second season. Need I say more? The takeaway: It’s going to be so good you’re going to want to talk about it with everyone you know, so set aside an apt amount of binge time now. Who needs fun fall outdoor activities like apple picking when you have mind-bending TV in the comfort of your own home?
Some other non-book-related TV favorites are also coming back, and their humor is much needed. The sixth and final season of “The Mindy Project” returns to Hulu on September 12th, and soak it up while you can because it might be a while before we see her on the screen again (hello, Motherhood!). Millennial-favorite power-team Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer remind us of the beauty of friendship and the fun of casual debauchery in the fourth season of “Broad City.” Premiering on Comedy Central on September 13th, I couldn’t be more excited to see what they’re going to get into this time around. Also in its fourth season, “Transparent” will return to Amazon on September 22nd, and I’m feeling pretty positive that the Pfeffermans will not disappoint. Lest we forget, the series left off with Shelly giving us a truly amazing rendition of “Hand In My Pocket” on the cruise ship, which may or may not have sparked a personally deep spiral of Morissette’s mid-90s discography. To sum it up, women have been and are continuing to make strong (comedic) moves, and I’m 110% here for it.
Of course, TV’s biggest night (besides any GOT finale episode) is the Emmys, which will be on Sunday, September 17th. The awards show will be hosted by Stephen Colbert (swoon!), and presenters include Oprah, Alec Baldwin and Anna Faris, among many others. Some standout favorites up for accolades this year: “The Night Of,” “Big Little Lies,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Westworld.” We only have to wait 10 more sleeps until we see who wins the gold. To make the time pass more pleasurably, here are some books to check out:
