We’ve almost made it one-third of the way through fall, which means we have only one thing on our mind: Halloween. As usual, it’s creeping up on us fast and making us super anxious about pulling together our costumes. The countdown is real, and it’s on. Will we outdo ourselves from last year? Only Tom and our Instagram likes will tell. We’re predicting a lot of sexy Ken Bones and rare Pokémons among the dressed-up crowd this year...and we’re not complaining ;)

We probably don’t have to remind you that Halloween is a great time if you’re single and ready to mingle. That being said, hitting the parties with your best bud (or your GF/BF/BF4L/LYLAS) is a great way to pick up Pikachus, if that’s the sort of thing you’re into. But real talk, we’ve been hitting the Halloween circuit (read: circus) as a dynamic duo for a couple of years now and it doesn’t disappoint. It means you have a sidekick (UNLESS YOU’RE HER SIDEKICK) to play along with you for the night, a shared Uber bill and a bud who is willing to “grab another slice” if you get hungry later. They also make excellent wingwomen, but who’s really counting.

Sure, sure, sure...you could think up some great historic and current two-people teams, but here are some that we’re all about right now who would make great costumes: Ben Affleck + Matt Damon, Matt Damon + Jimmy Kimmel, Tina + Amy, Hansel + Gretel, Ina Garten + her husband, Thelma + Louise, Madame Thénardier + Thénardier (from LES MIS), Ren + Stimpy, Arya Stark + the Hound, Rusty Cohle + Marty Hart (miss you the most). Reminder: These are only suggestions...but they are real good ones.

Something else that’s better with a pal? Writing newsletters! Not to toot our own horns, but we’re up to 5,000 newsletter subscribers rn, and we couldn’t be more excited. It’s readers like you, who have kept our newsletter championed and revered all these years, who make it all worthwhile. Our love tanks and bellies are full, and we thank you for that.

When we’re not tossing and turning over costume ideas and trying to find anything that’s not pumpkin spice-flavored, it’s safe to say that we’ve been having a less than stellar movie season. The Girl on the Train isn’t pulling in the kind of reviews we’d been hoping for, and neither, for that matter, is The Accountant, which comes out today. If there aren’t movies to see, what else is there to live for? Kidding...sorta. ‘Tis the season for tricks, no? And sure, we’ll take the treats, too, even if they’re not of the cinematic variety.

On other visual fronts, “Westworld” has been living up to the hype. Exceeding it, in fact. There’s all sorts of twists and turns, and the theories swirling around the internest have us tearing our hair out. Our very real hair because we’re human, we swear. Note: Do not read Reddit threads or seek spoilers unless you’re prepared. You’ve been warned. Fans of Michael Crichton, Ray Bradbury and good stories, ideas and acting in general won’t want to miss this one. And if you’re still not convinced, it’s good enough that Emily is considering forgiving Evan Rachel Wood for Barefoot and almost ruining Scott Speedman’s fine name.

Speaking of destroying reputations, notorious Tinderella Ryan Lochte is engaged to his hunnybunny. So happy those boneheads were finally able to say jeah! to love after their long and meaningful courtship (read: four months or so of DMs). Our favorite formerly blue-haired bimbo is taking the great leap off that diving board called “life” and plunging full speed ahead into the PR-friendly waters of matrimony. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t genuinely thrilled for the guy...and we never lie, because sockless Matt Lauer would force us to apologize. Now all he needs is an adorable Instagram-famous baby, and he’s hot on Michael Phelps’ happy trail.

When ‘tume hunting gets you down, pick up a good book. Here are some to check out:

Swedish author Camilla Läckberg is back at it again with THE LOST BOY. Detective Patrik Hedstrom is no stranger to tragedy. A murder case concerning Fjällbacka’s dead financial director, Mats Sverin, is a grim but useful distraction from his recent family misfortunes. It seems Sverin was a man who everybody liked yet nobody really knew. His high school sweetheart, Nathalie, has just returned to Fjällbacka with her five-year-old son. Perhaps she can shed some light on who Sverin really was. However, Nathalie has her own secret. If it’s discovered, she will lose her only child. As the investigation stalls, the police have many questions. But there is only one that matters: Is there anything a mother would not do to protect her child?

SMALL GREAT THINGS by Jodi Picoult tells the story of Ruth Jefferson, a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than 20 years’ experience. During a shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders, or does she intervene? Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime.

In THE WANGS VS. THE WORLD by Jade Chang, Charles Wang, a brash, lovable immigrant businessman who built a cosmetics empire and made a fortune, has just been ruined by the financial crisis. Charles pulls Andrew, his aspiring comedian son, and Grace, his style-obsessed daughter, out of schools he can no longer afford. Together with their stepmother, Barbra, they embark on a cross-country road trip to the upstate New York hideout of the eldest daughter, disgraced art world it-girl Saina. From the moment she uttered the brave and honest words, "I am an alcoholic," to interviewer George Stephanopoulos, Elizabeth Vargas began writing her story. Now, in BETWEEN BREATHS, Vargas discusses her accounts of growing up with anxiety and how she dealt with it as she came of age, to her eventually turning to alcohol for relief. She tells of how she found herself living in denial, about the extent of her addiction and keeping her dependency a secret for so long. She addresses her time in rehab, her first year of sobriety, and the guilt she felt as a working mother who had never found the right balance. Reviewed by Christine M. Irvin.
