Control is an Emmy Nom

Last night was the second season premiere of one of our all-time favorite shows, “Mr. Robot.” If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s about time you do. The show stars Hollywood stalwart Christian Slater and our newest swoon-worthy crush, Rami Malek, who both belong to a hacker collective that overthrows America’s largest corporation. The first season was phenomenal, and episode 2.1 was straight fire. It’s that can’t-eat-can’t-sleep-type of TV, perfect for the kind of episode-binging only indulged by pure-bred millennials. And now that Nikki can say Rami’s name correctly, there’s no stopping us when we go off on how great the show is --- and how sexy our crazy-eyed protagonist is.

Real talk, though: All crushing aside, the show is brilliant and really hits home in ways we never thought possible. It shows how vulnerable our online (and IRL) identities have become in the digital age. All of the hacks enacted on the show can actually happen, or have happened(!!!), in real life. We may think that online banking is so easy and online shopping is next to godliness; truth is, we’re all too exposed to those well-versed in coding and backend shenanigans. It’s no coincidence that our credit/debit cards have been compromised multiple times in the past few years and what strangers know about us via FB, Twitter, IG, Snapchat, Pokémon Go, etc. etc. etc. One thing is for sure, after watching “Mr. Robot,” you’ll be changing your passwords more frequently than you update your Amazon shopping cart, and you’ll be tempted to cover your computer’s camera. We’re even considering burner phones. JK...maybe.

We’re not saying the internet and computers are terrible. Actually, they’re awesome, but also very, very scary. Point is --- the internet, social media and more all grew so fast. Now, it’s clear that digital security didn’t develop at the same rate. Of course, there are always loopholes, gaps, ditches and digs in everything. All we’re saying is (and not to sound too much like Emily’s dad, but): Protect yourself. Think before you type. Look before you swipe. And unsubscribe when necessary.

Speaking of TV shows, the Emmy noms were announced this morning. Since the 68th award show, i.e. the biggest night in television except for any “GOT” finale, doesn’t happen until September 18th, we can toss and turn for the next month or two over who will be the best dressed...and who will win, of course. Here are some of our hopes, dreams and predictions: Sarah Paulson takes Lead Actress, TV Movie/Limited Series for “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” Amy Schumer scores Lead Actress, Comedy for “Inside Amy Schumer,” and, of course, our boy Rami wins Lead Actor, Drama for “Mr. Robot.” Click here to see the full nomination list. We were bummed to see our girls Chelsea Handler and Samantha Bee left out of the Variety Talk category, but they’re still lowkey making the best shows in late night --- with or without award noms. And congrats to our queen Beyoncé, who scored not one but FOUR nominations for "Lemonade." More like, always stay gracious, best revenge is your EGOT.

When it comes to award shows, we’re always rooting for some first-time wins. Firsts are good...usually...especially when it means you get to preview your favorite entertainment. We’ve said it once before, and we’ll say it again, First In Line is a program that lets booklovers set the trends by reading new YA books before they hit the shelves. They offer exclusive giveaways for advance reader copies, the opportunity to win branded First In Line swag, special author videos and more. Scroll down to learn more about First In Line, and check out their latest pick for August, GIRL IN PIECES by Kathleen Glasgow. We’re pretty pumped about this debut author, and Carol Fitzgerald, co-founder and President of The Book Report Network, is “crazy” about this book that reminded her of Girl Interrupted. She found herself hurting for Charlie at the start and then cheering for her as she worked on patching herself back together and healing. It hits shelves August 30th.

They may not be advance copies, but in the meantime here are some recent hot-off-the-press titles we recommend:

Reviewed by our very own Rebecca Munro, THE ASSISTANTS by Camille Perri tells the story of Tina Fontana, a 30-year-old executive assistant to Robert Barlow, the CEO of Titan Corp. After six years, the glamour of working for a media company in New York has completely faded, though her student loan debt has not. As she begins to fall down the rabbit hole of her morally questionable plan, other assistants with crushing debt and fewer scruples approach her to say that they want in. Before she knows it, Tina is at the forefront of a movement that has implications far beyond what anyone anticipated.

It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge. A deeply moving portrait of a girl in a world that owes her nothing, and has taken so much and the journey she undergoes to put herself back together. Kathleen Glasgow's debut is heartbreakingly real and unflinchingly honest.
