Why Can't We Be Friends?

We’re noticing a #trend in entertainment right now that we’re not super happy about. We saw it in Batman v Superman, and we’re about to see it in this week’s hot ticket, Captain America: Civil War, and later this month in The Huntsman. Friends are fighting everywhere we look. To put it mildly, the #team is turning on itself, and it’s not a great look for anybody. Sure, we can assume everyone kisses and makes up in the end (at least Ben and Henry do in our dreams), but the premise remains troubling. When did the villain stop being a casual outsider and rather someone from within? Listen, we may be getting a bit cynical in our old age, but we blame the studios for monetizing all this intra-squad beef. And Taylor Swift a little, too.

We get it. Sometimes friends (and family) fight. Sometimes fighting is healthy: It can strengthen your bond, it can broaden your perspective, it can teach you to stick up for yourself and be honest. Confrontation is never awesome, but it can be constructive in your relationships. But what happened to the idea of sticking together through thick and thicker? If Kim can stick by Kanye through all his pre-Pablo Twitter rants, we can definitely look past a friend’s casual malfeasance. Drama for drama’s sake is not new in entertainment, but team support from the gecko is way cooler (hey, it worked for @GEICO).

We aren’t saying that everything out there is hating on the team, but there’s definitely a polarizing atmosphere --- and we’re not talking about these chilly spring temps. Maybe it’s mirroring the contentious nature of the 2016 presidential campaigns. Superhero movies are the ultimate form of escapism; these days, when we spend all the money and make the trek to catch them, we’re looking for positive vibes all around. Take note, Christopher Nolan.

All is not lost, though! This summer we have the all-girls Ghostbusters coming out in full force and Suicide Squad bringing together some characters of a less savory nature --- although those “gifts” Jared Leto is sending to his castmates sound savory enough. And speaking of anti-conflict, Rick Linklater’s latest, Everybody Wants Some!! --- a “spiritual sequel” to 1993’s Dazed and Confused --- showed us the power of brotherhood...and also hot men in short shorts. Same goes for “Outlander,” where, against all odds, the MacKenzie clan banded together to get Jamie and Claire safely out of Scotland in the season one finale. It’s a great example of entertainment giving us warm feelings, and not just because Sam Heughan looks so damn fine in a kilt.

We can’t deny that interior squabbles create compelling storylines. We’ll keep seeing the movies, we’ll just keep complaining about them, too. Everyone wins! Like George Washington always used to say while crossing the Delaware River, “So is Jon Snow alive or what?”

Everyone wins with books, too. So here’s a few to check out:

LILAC GIRLS by Martha Hall Kelly tells the story of Caroline Ferriday, a New York socialite, whose world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939 --- and then sets its sights on France. Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women.

SAVING ALEX: When I Was Fifteen I Told My Mormon Parents I Was Gay, and That's When My Nightmare Began is a heartbreaking memoir by Alex Cooper. When Alex was 15 years old, life was pretty ordinary in her sleepy suburban town and nice Mormon family. But something was gnawing at her that made her feel different. These feelings exploded when she met Yvette, a girl who made her feel alive in a new way, and with whom she would quickly fall in love. She was driven from her home in Southern California to Utah, where, against her will, her parents handed her over to fellow Mormons who promised to save Alex from her homosexuality in an unlicensed “residential treatment program." SAVING ALEX is a courageous memoir that tells Alex’s story in the hopes that it will bring awareness and justice to this important issue.

LOVE, LOSS, AND WHAT WE ATE: A Memoir is foodie-favorite Padma Lakshmi’s account of her journey from her grandmother’s kitchen in South India to the judges’ table of “Top Chef” and beyond. Long before Lakshmi ever stepped onto a television set, she learned that how we eat is an extension of how we love, how we comfort, how we forge a sense of home --- and how we taste the world as we navigate our way through it. Her story chronicles the fierce devotion of the remarkable people who shaped her along the way.
