My Ex-Best Friend’s Wedding

May 2019

MY EX-BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING by Wendy Wax was such a fun read for me. Most of the book is set on the Outer Banks, which was where our family vacationed for summers from 2001 to 2013, as well as for Christmas holidays and spring breaks. I loved the way that Wendy latched on to all the details that make the area so special. She layered in so many of the great places to visit --- and dine --- and captured its spirit so well. Just for that, the novel got high marks from me.

The plot revolves around two former best friends, Lauren and Bree, who had a falling-out years ago. Right before their planned move to New York, Bree got cold feet and stayed in North Carolina. Lauren became a bestselling novelist, but was the work that started her career her own? Add an upcoming wedding to the mix, and you have a terrific story here of friendship lost and found. Layer in a wedding dress that has been in a family for generations, and you have nostalgia and lots of memories bubbling up.

For those who love stories about book publishing, Wendy has some fabulous nuggets tucked into her prose that will give readers some "inside baseball" intel about the world of books and authors. The beach, books, friendship and a wedding: it has everything for a great story, and in Wendy’s hands it’s told really well. Oh, and the inspiration for the book came from a dress that was passed down in her family for generations!
