44 Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith

5
A delightful story about young people trying to identify themselves and figure out who they are. Pat moves out of a very comfortable situation living with her parents, and moves into a flat at 44 Scotland Street where she meets Bruce who is very aware of and obsessed with his attractiveness. And then there is Matthew whose wealthy father provides all kinds of opportunities but to no avail, the most recent being an art gallery and where Pat gets a job as a receptionist. During the course of events, Pat and Matthew discover in the gallery what might be a very valuable painting, and it is referred throughout the book as a "Peploe"? Very entertaining and funny how they go about determining its worth.

Everything Here is Beautiful by Mira T. Lee

2
This book is not as good as the reviews. It is a story of a woman with serious mental illness and her sister's efforts to save her. Data about mental illness is misstated in this book. There is NO scientific proof that mental illness is genetic. This is an issue still being studied as are the various treatment methods utilized for various illnesses. All in all, this is a mish-mash of mental illness hype. Go get a real book, one with research evidence, if you want to learn about mental illness. The author writes well and characters are developed to various degrees. There is a general "throw-it-all-together" at the end, attempting to explain a back story about the family.

It is an even story about a relationship between two sisters who love each other but are not as close as they both would like to be. GOOD book.

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman

5
I think this is an excellent debut novel; I thoroughly enjoyed it!! On a once in a lifetime dream honeymoon, newlyweds Mark and Erin's life-changing discovery leads them on a harrowing journey. Their shocking surprise find follows them back home and continues to impact their daily lives. Did they make the right decision? A very relatable story for most, making you wonder, "What would you do?". A fast-paced domestic thriller with a suspenseful and unbelievable ending! Highly recommend this read!

Address to Die For by Mary Feliz

4
I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this cozy mystery was it is by a new to me author, and yes I will be reading more of her! Her main character is Maggie McDonald who is a professional organizer. She likes lists and order and helps others accomplish order in their homes and businesses. But nothing can prepare her for the body in her new home or the vandalism that follows. Trying to get her family settled in a new area with new jobs and schools is hard enough without the mystery that surrounds the vicious attacks to people and property. Can she survive this move?

Kim
A Double Life by Flynn Berry

5
This is an advanced copy I read, but when it hits the shelves you really need to read it. I was totally engrossed in this story of a woman who is the daughter of a killer who has eluded justice and her search to find him and have him brought in by the police. It covers the past and the present seamlessly and lets you see how the circumstances have had an impact on the life of this young woman, her troubled brother and mother. I was happy I had a whole afternoon I could dedicate to finishing it in one sitting. I suggest you do the same. The story flows easily which is always a plus in my book.

Alina
On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

4
The prose easily flows in this beautifully-written book. The book is a quick read and keeps the reader engaged throughout. Sadly, the young newlyweds failure to understand/accept/have patience with each other on their wedding night drastically impacts their relationship and their future.

Pat
A Shot in the Dark by Lynne Truss

5
Nothing like a crime story set in Brighton in the 1950s with a great cast of characters and the police trying to solve several murders at once. I love how the police uncover a conspiracy that has been in the works for over twenty years. Great surprises and plot twists.

Lost Creed by Alex Kava

5
Ryder Creed rescues dogs and trains them to search by scent detection. He has been searching for his missing sister Brodie for 16 years, ever since she was abducted from an interstate truck stop. Now FBI profiler Maggie O’Dell gets a clue about Brodie’s abduction and tells Ryder. He demands to be included in on the raid of a suspected trafficker. Maggie doesn’t want him to get his hopes up only to be disappointed when he doesn’t find Brodie. If there’s a chance he can find his sister or her remains, he intends to be there. Totally amazing what these trained dogs can do! Great story about Ryder and his trained dog Grace.

Nancy
The Other Woman by Daniel Silva

5
I've read all of Daniel Silva's books featuring Gabriel Allon, a master art restorer and Israeli spy. As soon as I finish one, I look forward to the next. THE OTHER WOMAN was no exception, and I was not disappointed. In fact, I think this is one of his best, especially because it wove a story and created characters around real-life events and people. The background for THE OTHER WOMAN is one of the greatest spying betrayals in history, one that I knew little about. Silva brings a crippling experience of long ago into modern times in a book of intrigue, love and betrayal. Trump and Putin and the possibility of collusion are nothing compared to what went on with the men and women Silva creates and re-creates. A great read.

The Moores Are Missing by James Patterson

4
The book is composed of three short stories. The first is "The Moores Are Missing" about the search for a missing family. A friend of the family searches amid strong objections of the police and a US Marshal. The second is "The Housewife" and is about a former chief of detectives who should never have resigned to take care of her babies. She can’t keep from investigating a murder that occurred in her neighborhood to the ire of her husband who is also a detective. The third is "Absolute Zero" and is about a former soldier who is framed for the deaths of his friends and he swears revenge. He will take down the kingpin who is connected with the manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs.

Linda
Wicked and the Wallflower by Sarah MacLean

3
I have read many of Sarah MacLean’s books and enjoyed them, but not this one. The character of Felicity Faircloth has got to be one of the most stupid characters ever. Raised in society, she meets Devil, king of Covent Gardens and head of a smuggling ring. She lusts after him until kisses are exchanged. She wants to be with him but he tells her she will be snubbed by the ton and should stay with her family and friends in Mayfair. She is hard-headed and determined to have the man she loves. And that is Devil.

Very weird! I found the premise interesting, but she didn’t end it well at all.

Lies by T. M. Logan

5
I read an ARC of this book for the publisher and was absolutely blown away by it! Joe, the main character, is a husband, teacher and father who is caught up in the deceit of his wife and her love. Joe is charged with the murder of Ben, his wife’s lover, after Ben disappears. The rest of the book is Joe trying to find Ben and to protect his son from attacks launched by the psychotic man who always wants to win, at all costs. This book will appeal to all readers of psychological thrillers and is a must-read for the month of September! The characters were well portrayed with lots of surprises in the plot. The ending itself was a moment that will blow you away with its revelation of what has really been happening throughout the book!

A cunning, sharp family saga filled with psychological suspense surrounding the relationships of mother, father and a challenged mischievous four-year-old named Hanna. Many layers of shock that kept me up hours into the night!

Tessa B C
Murder at the Bad Girl's Bar and Grill by N. M. Kelby

3
2.5 stars. Reminds me of Carl Hiassen, but not quite so well written. Still it’s a fun, ridiculous romp of a tale that kept me entertained and engaged despite its total outlandishness. Frankly, none of these characters made sense to me, and the plot was completely unbelievable. But I did laugh out loud a few times and it was a fast read.

The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd

5
In South Carolina in 1736, sixteen year old girls were expected to be sweet, compliant and marry well. Eliza Lucas was anything but the normal Low Country girl. She was intelligent, educated and ambitious. Eliza was left to run to her father’s three plantations while he pursued his military career and jeopardized the family’s wealth and position.

Jud
Gumshoe on the Loose by Rob Leininger

4
GUMSHOE ON THE LOOSE by Rob Leininger is the third entry in the well-written, highly-entertaining Mortimer Angel series. Leininger has an impressive personal resume (retired Navy, mechanical engineer and Shamus Award nominee for his debut novel, GUMSHOE). His varied life experience is visible in the characters he creates and the plots he composes. Among the literary sleuths who rely primarily on their wits to get the job done, Angel is a standout, as is his creator. I recommend this book for anyone who likes a lot of humor in their mysteries and give this book 4 stars.

Jeanette
Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill

This compelling history felt very real and authentic. I felt like I was right there with the main character as she was stolen from her village in Africa, endured the voyage to America, was sold to an abusive farmer and eventually obtained her freedom.

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

5
Richard and Vanessa are divorced. They seemed to have the perfect marriage, but Richard is in love with another woman. When Vanessa finds out they are engaged, she is devastated and sets out to stop the wedding somehow. This book had so many twists and turns, I couldn't put it down. When I thought I had solved the mystery, I was wrong. I loved it!

Carolyn
The Lost City of Z by David Grann

4
This book is about a group of individuals exploring and looking for civilization in the Amazon, the Lost City of Z. The beginning of the book is not engaging but due to curiosity, everyone that opens the book will continue to read it to find out what happens next. This book is full of suspense, keeps you wondering what will happen next. You have to read the book to find out what happens to the individuals that dare to venture into the unknown just because of their urge to discover and know. Some club members loved it, others didn't because of the descriptive nature of the book.

CAROL
Believe Me by J. P. Delaney

4
Wow! What a wonderfully weird book!! The characters are vivid as are descriptions of the setting. I was immediately hooked by this very unusual story. Unbelievable amount of twists in the plot. Just when I thought I knew where it was going, BAM, it went a different direction. Who to believe? Who to trust? A spellbinding novel right up to the last stunning pages!

Sean
Hideaway by Dean Koontz

4
Dean Koontz ties together a handful of genres as a family deals with horrific circumstances revolving around life and death. It's truly an interesting take on life and death, good and evil, etc. The story zigs one way and then zags another. The characters were more real then they had any right to be and the author did a fine job making you care about almost all the characters. Overall, a very good book that would have been five stars had the ending not been anticlimactic.

Kathy
The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

5
Very good book. I enjoy all her books and spending time in Nantucket each summer via her books. I have now started spending time there each winter as she has now started writing a winter book yearly. Currently reading THE IDENTICALS since I missed reading it last summer. Six years ago after having back surgery I read my first book of hers. I was unable to be out and two of my friends scoured every used book store and book sale to find me all of her books. I spent my whole summer recuperating in Nantucket, and every summer since I indulge in buying her newest book in hardcover. A breath of fresh air in Nantucket every summer with great reads by Elin Hilderbrand. If you have never read her, give her a try - you’ll be glad you did.

The Summer Wives by Beatriz Williams

Give me a good family saga told with alternating narrators, make the characters wealthy and powerful, throw in a little mystery, and place them on an island. I am a happy reader.

Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty

4
While I might be the only person to have not read (or watched!) BIG LITTLE LIES yet, this book has given me a glimmer of the hype about Liane Moriarty. In TRULY MADLY GUILTY, she crafts a suburban drama surrounding an incident that took place at a barbecue. She is adept at creating tension between couples, neighbors and families, and her development of characters, no matter how difficult they may be to stomach (Erika and Oliver are such pills), is well done. A domestic drama that is tough to put down.

Shelley
The Similars by Rebecca Hanover

5
Exciting technology-forward YA novel that dives into the subject of cloning. Emma goes back to Darkwood boarding school as a junior but things won't be the same this year. Her best friend, Oliver, is gone and the school has 6 clones that are replicas of some of the students (aka Similars). One of them looks exactly like Oliver. Mystery, suspense, and a touch of high school romance all make this book a quick, enjoyable read. Satisfying ending yet open to a sequel.

I Will Never Leave You by S. M. Thayer

4
A husband brings his wife of twelve years to his mistress's maternity room in the hospital to ask for a divorce. However, the wife holds all the cards - or does she? Very good, fast-paced read. I recommend this to anyone who likes the women thrillers that have become popular.

Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover

5
A book that I just finished is a memoir called EDUCATED by Tara Westover. Tara was 17 and living in the mountains of Idaho. Her parents were survivalists, and they did not allow Tara and her siblings to go to school, go to a doctor, or any of the other things that kids grow up doing. At age 17, Tara, through her extreme thirst for learning, started school. In a very short few years, she received many degrees and ended her formal schooling with a PhD in history from Cambridge. I first learned of this book when I saw Tara on one of the morning shows talking about her book. It was a fascinating book!

How Far We Go and How Fast by Nora Decter

3
HOW FAR WE GO tells the story of 16-year-old Jolene Tucker and her mom in Winnipeg. Jolene talks to her dog (symbolizing loneliness?), but not much to anyone else, and music helps pass the time. Her brother "left" one year before with his custom blues guitar. She skips school to hang out alone, sneak into university classes, and stop into pawn shops to look at guitars. A couple weeks of drinking, drugs, and sex. Seems very pro drinking which is in contrast to the first half of book devoted to describing how mom is drunk and messed up every day. Ending seems rushed, but story has clear concise wrap-up with everything worked out nice and tidy.

Help I Am Being Held Prisoner by Donald E. Westlake

4
I had never read or even heard of Donald E. Westlake until recently, even though he has written upwards of 100 books. I decided to begin with this one. This is a pulpy, humorous crime story about a practical joker who is sent to prison for a prank gone awry. He inadvertently falls in with a tough group of convicts who are planning something. I won't say what that something is, but I will say I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was laugh-out-loud funny in parts, but also a little suspenseful. It would have made a good movie. I could easily envision James Garner in the role of Harry. It's a fun, easy read that will keep you entertained.

Nadine
Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist

4
BREAD AND WINE is a collection of essays about family relationships, friendships, and the meals that bring us together. This mix of Anne Lamott and Barefoot Contessa is a funny, honest, and vulnerable spiritual memoir. BREAD AND WINE is a celebration of food shared, reminding readers of the joy found in a life around the table. It's about the ways God teaches and nourishes people as they nourish the people around them. It's about hunger, both physical and otherwise, and the connections between the two. With wonderful recipes included, from Bacon-Wrapped Dates to Mango Chicken Curry to Blueberry Crisp, readers will be able to recreate the comforting and satisfying meals that come to life in BREAD AND WINE.

Trains and Lovers by Alexander McCall Smith

3
In this novel – not part of any series – four strangers meet on a train bound for London from Edinburgh. As they get acquainted their stories come out. I love Alexander McCall Smith. I love the way he puts together an ensemble of characters and slowly reveals their everyday lives and the little (and big) dramas hidden in plain sight.

Believe Me by JP Delaney

5
Loved it as much as THE GIRL BEFORE. Claire, a striving British Actress, hoping for a green card so that she can stay in New York, takes a job in a law firm as a decoy to trap straying husbands on tape with their seductive propositions. One of the wives has a message for her and the next thing we know Claire is accused of murdering her. How do we get out of this? Thank you Random House for such a great book.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

5
Laura Blacklock, a journalist who works for a travel magazine, is awakened one night by the sound of someone in her home. The intruder slams the door into her face and escapes, but even after the locks are changed she is unnerved by the break in. She has been assigned to cover a cruise on a small luxury cruise ship, the Aurora, which may be a welcome change. Instead there are unsettling events. The cabin next to hers, 10, is supposedly empty, but when she knocks a woman answers the door. During the night she hears a scream and a splash, but when she reports this to security and others on the ship, no one believes her. She says she will go to the police in the next port which leads to her being kidnapped. Escape seems impossible.

Southern Discomfort: A Southern B&B Mystery by Caroline Fardig

5
This is a must for cozy lovers! I have read one of Ms. Fardig's "The Java Jive Coffee House Series" and loved it. This is another one that I look forward to following. This one is set around a family owned and operated B&B in Savannah. Quinn Bellandini along with her older sister Delilah and grandfather "Sal" prove to be a lovable cast of characters. I found this mystery to be a real whodunnit, it has a touch of romance and I can't forget to mention the fantastic recipes included at the end of the book. I'm looking forward to her next book in this series.

Manhattan is My Beat by Jeffery Deaver

Paper Ghosts by Julia Heaberlin

5
What a trip for the reader and the protagonist in this suspenseful novel! The younger sister of a 19-year-old woman who disappeared has spent years investigating this loss has concluded that a former photographer who was acquitted of killing another young woman must be the kidnapper and killer of her sister. This man, now in his 60s, suffering from dementia, lives in an assisted living house. Posing as a long-lost daughter, she devises a plan to take him on a 10-day trip to visit the sites where other young women have vanished or died. She is sure that he is a serial killer. She has covered every detail that she believes she needs to complete her task of locating the person who took her sister. Surprises do arise and comedy as well.

Martha
Dreamers of the Day by Mary Dorian Russell

5
A great piece of historical fiction told in whimsical fashion. This novel deals with the people involved in the Cairo Conference of 1921 -- Winston Churchill, Lawrence of Arabia, Gertrude Bell. You probably never heard of Agnes who narrates the story, but she even provides a photo from that time and you just might find her in that photo. A great read and a good book club choice by this author who is so accomplished.

Becky
The Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse

5
A young woman living in Holland during the Nazi Occupation is forced into smuggling and utilizing the black market in order to feed her family and friends. One of her “regulars” asks her to find “the girl in the blue coat” and that is where the mystery begins. Secrets, betrayals, lost friendships, disappearances, dead lovers and danger on all sides makes this a compelling and tense read. Everyday life in an occupied city is made real and horrific. Although billed as Young Adult, this novel will appeal to anyone interested in WWII and the resistance, especially in Holland.

Barbara
The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

3
This was a fun, quick read. The characters were pretty average and the plot was interesting. I thought there were too many characters involved and many didn't get flushed out. But for something quick to pass the time, like a beach book, it was okay.

Rebecca
Seeking the Brown Mountain Lights by C C Tillery and Christy Tillery French

5
For centuries, the Brown Mountain Lights near Morganton, NC have been shrouded in mystery. Some people say they’re the spirits of Cherokee maidens searching for their lost warriors after a fierce battle between the Cherokee and Catawba hundreds of years before the area was settled. Some claim they’re the ghosts of a plantation owner came through them who disappeared while hunting on the mountain and the slaves who went looking for him and never returned. Others believe they’re apparitions of a woman and her newborn baby who disappeared in the 1850s and the men who searched for her and vanished.

The Death and Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan

4
This is a nonfiction tale of the mighty body of waters that surround my state of Michigan. From invasive species to direction of water flow and the chance of becoming the source of water for many people outside of our area, Dan has researched and used qualified authorities to detail what is happening and what might happen to these fresh water treasures. I am not usually a nonfiction reader, but I found this book compelling and couldn't put it down.

Good Luck With That by Kristan Higgins

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

5
Even before I knew the movie was being made I read this funny, funny, funny story knowing from the prologue that this was going to be worth devouring. While each family comes from unimaginable wealth, Nick Young couldn't care less about it. So when he takes his run of the mill Chinese girlfriend, Rachel, to Singapore for the summer to meet his family, not only do rumors rum amok, but Rachel is wondering if her Nick is worth all of the scrutiny. Crazy is an understatement for these insanely petty and hilarious tribe of folks.

Dana
The Hush by John Hart

4
I love John Hart's writing, so it's not a stretch to say what a fantastic story this is. It picks up characters from THE LAST CHILD, which was excellent, ten years later. The genre is mystery, thriller, with a hint of supernatural. It deals with the bonds of friendship, love of place and healing a violent history. If you liked THE LAST CHILD, you will find this very satisfying.

Jan
Barracoon by Zora Neale Hurston

5
I loved this book. It is true research and tells the story of a man as he sees himself and his life. Many will not like it because Hurston uses the language of Cudjo Lewis. He was the last known living man who had been brought to America as a slave. Hurston scholar, Deborah Plant, adds discussion and information to clarify when necessary. The book also gives the back story of Hurston's initial article about Cudjo, which was primarily plagiarized (which was new information to me). Cudjo was old and poor and alone when Hurston interviewed him and we witness the plight of many researchers - having to bend to the wishes of those who are being researched. A true find, so many years after the death of the author.

Feared by Lisa Scottoline

4

Leave No Trace by Mindy Mejia

4
A father and his young son disappear in the wilderness of the Boundary Waters of Minnesota for over 10 years when the son appears alone breaking into a store. He is placed in a mental institution. Old Heart by Peter Ferry

3
3.5 stars. 85-year-old Tom decides to “run away” after his adult children make plans to forcibly move him to a retirement community. If it hadn’t been for a face-to-face book club I probably would never have come across this little gem of a novel. I loved these characters (or loved to hate…in a couple of cases). In a short work the author addresses issues of aging, marriage (good and bad), lost opportunities, holding on to one’s dreams, taking chances, being responsible, and the meaning of love.

Need to Know by Karen Cleveland

4
Enjoy, entertaining story concerning a wife who works for the CIA who finds out her husband is a Russian spy. In order to protect her family this woman attempts to cover up this secret. Once she does this, however, the web of deceit becomes bigger and bigger and hard to erase. The ending left me somewhat mystified and unsettled. I am anxious to discuss it with my book club later this month. I hope someone will shed light on the questions I have. I suggest listening to the story on audiobook. The narrator is wonderful!

Michael B
Edgar and Lucy by Victor Ladato

5
An extraordinary epic and poetic novel about damaged family relationships, the main characters being a mother (Lucy: in her mid-20s for most of the novel, red hair, big bosom, pretty, alcoholic, and unsentimental) and Edgar, her young albino son (autistic-like, smart, awkward, vulnerable, and courageous), with additional characters, including the big teddy bear butcher, the kidnapper, Lucy's ex (schizophrenic), the old fashioned Italian grandmother (with her secrets and powerful love). The novel exquisitely portrays each character without judgment, with dry humor, and love and narrates an incredible almost fable-like story. There were a couple of very minor errors by the author by including 2 or 3 unnecessarily awkward turns in the story.

Andra
The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis

4
Fiona Davis has done it again, using an iconic NYC location as not only a location for the story but like a character. This story is told in two different eras, 50 years apart, with women still facing the same issues. It is well written and the characters are well defined. For fans of historical fiction.

Laurie
The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis

Fictional history at its best. Talented author Fiona Davis took me behind the scenes of New York’s Grand Central Terminal, a fascinating tale of art, history, love and beyond. The female characters are especially bold and unforgettable! Brava!

I read this in anticipation of the movie's debut and realized why this was a sensation when it came out! A wonderful satiric send-up about the super-rich is Singapore. The food descriptions alone make me want to try the food there! The story is ultimately one about family ties, maternal love, and how awkward it feels like as an outsider in a group of your own race. The distinctions between ABC, mainland Chinese, and ex-pat Chinese people in Singapore reminded me so much of the distinctions within the deaf community. I am hard of hearing, not a deaf child of culturally deaf parents, and not a hearing child of deaf parents, or a late-deafened person. This book reminds me again of all the in-fighting between people who are more alike than not.

The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown

3
We all think we know the story of the Donner Party. But few of us really do. Over the years it has been sensationalized. Daniel James Brown desensationalizes it in THE INDIFFERENT STARS ABOVE. Brown also adds modern-day knowledge, especially scientific knowledge, to help the reader understand what the Donner Party went through. With understanding comes empathy. The book begins in Illinois. It is interesting but not a page-turner in the first few short chapters. Although we read about hard times right away, it isn’t until Part Two, about page 75, that we learn of the deception that led the Donner Party astray and to worse and worse trouble. Then we get to the story that has been sensationalized.

The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy

5
The true story of a man who gave a year of his life to an island and the new life its people gave him. A teacher recounts a year on Yamacraw Island, off the South Carolina coast, when he helped black children gain an awareness of themselves as well as the world around them. Loved this book - read it once, then again with one of my book clubs - now this month had a discussion at the second book club I attend.

Jud
The Outsider by Stephen King

4
Excellent mystery in the true tradition of his writing. This central focus of the book is whether or not a person can be in two places at the same time and if so, how? Can we always trust our eyes?

Jud
The President is Missing by James Patterson and Bill Clinton

4
Written with an uncanny realism, this book combines Clinton's first-hand knowledge of the Presidency with Patterson's first-rate writing skills to produce a novel that is hard to put down. Be sure to have plenty of free time when you start this book.

Sandra
A Pitying of Doves by Steve Burrows

3
A rather unique mystery where the main character is an enthusiastic birder as well as a police officer in Norwich. I enjoyed all the details about birds along with the well-plotted mystery.

4
I enjoyed this semi-fictional story of the nascent BBC and its extraordinary Director of Talks, Hilda Mathieson.

Terry
Crimson Lake by Candice Fox

Ted, a cop, is accused of raping a young girl but never put on trial. He was never exonerated of this crime. He is fired from the police force, shunned by his co-workers and friends, and abandoned by his wife and child. He flees to the back-country of Australia. Amanda is an ex-con turned private investigator who hires Ted to help her with a missing person’s case. The wife of a well-known author has hired them to find her missing husband. The personalities of this duo, Amanda, a tatted woman reminiscent of Pinky Tuscadero in demeanor and stature and Ted, still trying to come to terms with his new life, is level-headed but guarded. Together they form a unique team. The end wasn’t what I expected and I’m thinking series maybe?

Nancy
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

5
I thought this book was terrific. We read it for my book club for next month. The basic premise is a couple with an infant leaves her alone while they go to a party next door. Even though they check on her every half hour, the baby is kidnapped, leading to a series of plot twists and turns that kept me guessing. I had disliked THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN because I didn't like any of the characters. All the characters in this book have major personality defects, and yet I liked the book. As I read, I kept thinking that the author had jumped to conclusions without explanation, but if you wait long enough, it all becomes clear. It is worth the wait.

Robin
A Taste of Vengeance by Martin Walker

5
This is #11 in Walker’s series about Bruno, a policeman in a small town in western France. I love how these novels “taste!” Bruno uses his garden to create imaginative dinners for his friends while going about his business as a policeman solving crimes. He makes fois gras with a little vinegar and honey, he secures just the best vegetables and cheeses from his friends throughout the town and he grabs his lettuce from his garden and his rabbit from his freezer! He is a kind and gentle man who rides his horse with his dog chasing after him. If you dream of living and eating the bounty of France, you will really like these books.

Ghosted by Rosie Walsh

I loved, loved, loved this book. It drew me in as we all know someone or ourself that has been left wondering, “What happened?” This is what happens to Sarah after spending a week with her soulmate, as she believes, Eddie. After the week is over, they exchange numbers, add each other to their FB account, etc. Sarah continues to contact Eddie but never hears back. Like I said, everyone can relate to this situation and Sarah is left to wonder what happened. This book drew me in and I kept reading until I was done. Excellent story. So relatable.

Furnishing Eternity (A Father, a Son, a Coffin and a Measure of Life) by David Giffels

4
The author, a professor of creative nonfiction writing, shows how it's done, by writing the story of building his own coffin with the help of his father. He does this while grieving the death of his mother and the coming death of his best friend. It is a picture of grieving, remembering and living life well. Giffels includes a funeral playlist top 20, but I wish he had included the plans he used for his coffin. Would like to read more by this author.

Marilyn
The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

4
Our book club decided to read this as many had not read it since their early years in high school. Forgot just how troubled Caulfield's life was and the trials he went through in those teen years. The alienation, moving from one school to another, and trying to keep up relationships with his family members keep you wondering what is going to happen next. It's a coming-of-age book. Can see now why this was a banned book many times way back when. Lots of sexual connotations and "salty" language". Would be difficult to have adolescents reading this if not properly used in a group setting. All in all, enjoyed the book.

The beginning scenes of the mall shooting were very realistic and made me cry. The characters she followed from past to present were very well developed, and she made you care about them and root for them. I really liked this book!

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan

5
A great read based on a true story but written as a novel. It concerns a young man in Italy during WII. The events are so wild, if this was a movie, no one would believe it. WWII in Italy has been largely ignored. Try this book to get some feeling of German and Italian relations and the aftermath of the war in Italy.

Marcia
All You Can Ever Know by Nicole Chung

4
Nicole is Korean and was adopted by white parents after being born premature. She had loving parents but always felt an outsider in her white neighborhood and school. The book reveals her search for her history and other family members. I can understand her yearning for family, but not her unwillingness to reunite with her mother.

Marcia
The Far Away Brothers by Lauren Markham

3
This is the true story of three brothers' illegal immigration to the United States. One learns their reason to leave their native country and try to find a better life here. The life of their parents and siblings back in El Salvador is also revealed. An interesting read but I wish it had updated the reader on their current situation.

Susan
The Possible World by Liese O’Halloran Schwarz

5
My best book of 2018 (so far). Schwarz relates the story of a young boy who witnessed a horrific event, a doctor struggling with the end of her marriage and an elderly woman living a reclusive life after suffering a terrible tragedy. She brings these characters together through twists of time and employs the idea of reincarnation in a believable and moving way.

Gateway to the Moon by Mary Morris

5
From Columbus’s voyage to modern times, Morris centers on an extended family who is originally of Jewish faith. Members in the past are threatened by the inquisition and must convert to Christianity to survive. However, there are elements of their faith that they refuse to relinquish. In the 1990s, descendants are unaware of their heritage but continue to practice rituals that were passed down. The story is powerfully told, heart-wrenching but also joyful.

I loved the book. So much happens to the main character, but she keeps pushing on. There is so much to learn from Miriam.

Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann

3
A very interesting, horrible story, of which I had no idea. What people will do for wealth is just horrific. To think that greed could cause the demise of a group of peace-loving people is mind-boggling. I am glad that this book was brought to my attention.

Judy
Before and Again by Barbara Delinsky

4
I have never read a book from Delinsky that I didn't like. This book was a page-turner as I learned more about the human nature of men and women. Two families are suddenly having to defend themselves for the sake of their children's future. Good read.

Judy
Before and Again by Barbara Delinsky

5
The tragedy that the main character endures is heartbreaking and horrible. As I read, I watched her take steps to a new life. I don't want to give anything away here but I can say the power of love, the strength of the human spirit and the ability to listen to and help others with their personal nightmares is awe-inspiring and amazing.

Judy
Cottage by the Sea by Debbie Macomber

4
This book shows you how everyone of us has a story we keep to ourselves. Many times you think you are hiding it well, but it does come out in your personality. The main characters in this book eventually trust each other enough to get the pain out and move on.

Dorothy

Claire works for a law firm as a decoy to catch cheating husbands. When her last client is found murdered, suspicion centers on the husband but police have no proof. They want Claire to use her acting ability to get close to Patrick Fogle and get him to admit his guilt. If she succeeds, they will get her a green card so she can work legally in the US. Claire looks at every daily action as an actress would in her role. She isn’t sure whether it is real or acting. As her acting coach said, “Acting is not pretending, it’s doing”. Lots of psychological twists in this book and it’s a tad confusing to the reader when you are not sure whether her feelings and actions are real or not. Was she “just acting” or did she fall in love with Patrick?

3
Darach MacKenzie and Lachlan MacKay rescue a young woman who was slung over a horse’s back and led by Laird Fraser. Caitlin was sold to Fraser by her uncle Laird MacInnes. Fraser killed Darach’s father and many of his clansmen and war has been declared between the two clans. Darach was going to marry Fraser’s sister until he heard her declare her treachery. Her actions turned him against women but there is something about Caitlin that calls to him. Maybe she is the answer to his loneliness. Although the story is good, the character of Caitlin turned me off. It is hard to believe a great warrior like Darach could fall for a woman as stupid and ignorant as Caitlin. She is scatterbrained and acts more like a child instead of a grown woman.

The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

5
An amazing read! I've enjoyed reading Elin Hilderbrand's books for years and this one is no exception. I loved the mix of romance in enchanting Nantucket and the mystery of a death. I didn't want the story to come to an end. Can't wait for Hilderbrand's next book!

The Black Echo by Michael Connelly

5
As I write this fans of Connelly's work are getting ready for the 20th or so installment of the adventures of LAPA Detective Harry Bosch's endeavours. I, on the other hand, have just discovered this author and am thrilled to write that he's rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors! As an avid readers of mysteries and thrillers, it's always fun to find a new book or author, even if that author has been around a long time. What's the nicest surprise of all in this case is to have a book series (I've read the 2nd, and 3rd books too, so far) that is so well written, researched, and enjoyable. I never spoil but I have to say that most of the recent books on the bestseller list have typos, poor dialogue, and don't "thrill." Try it!

The Last Year of the War by Shirley Nelson

5
This is a beautiful, poignant, and important war novel. The characters in the story are presented as complex, flawed, and hopeful as they struggle to navigate living together at a bible school in Chicago during the final year of WWII. You fall in love quickly with the main character Jo as she learns how to balance her faith, her first time away from home, and the politics of war and how they challenge her Christian beliefs.

Joseph B. Chapin had been a distinguished lawyer and member of high society during the 1920s and early 1930s in the small city of Gibbsville, Pennsylvania, not too far from the big cities of New York and Philadelphia. The book begins with his funeral and then goes back and tells the story of his life. Joe had ambition for high office, maybe governor or even president. He wanted few people to know and went quietly about getting support. Would family issues stand in the way? His wife Edith offered encouragement but was controlling and not very likeable. The behavior of his children Ann and Joe, Jr. were a source of embarrassment. When his life was over had Joe Chapin realized his ambition? I thought the book was very good.

The second book in the Maisie Dobbs series. She is a resourceful, intelligent, assertive young woman, who listens carefully and shows compassion when helping others confront their demons. Billy Beale is a wonderful sidekick and I like the relationship between Maisie and Inspector Stratton of Scotland Yard.

The Wartime Sisters by Lynda Cohen Loigman

5
I'm so glad that I got the opportunity to read an advance copy of THE WARTIME SISTERS. I had been meaning to read the author's first book, but hadn't gotten to it yet. After reading THE WARTIME SISTERS, I will be sure to read THE TWO-FAMILY HOUSE asap. I enjoyed the book on many levels; I thought the author did a great job bringing the characters alive, and I learned a lot about the history of Springfield during the war. The family relationships seemed very authentic, and I appreciated being able to see both sisters' points of view. I've observed similar family dynamics in people I know, and the book made me sympathetic to both parties. I highly recommend the book and think it would be a great choice for book discussion groups.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

As you know this book was made into a movie but I have to say that this book is way better then the films. She writes like you're actually in the world of District 12. So many ups and downs of emotion! Great find.

Sunburn by Laura Lippman

5
First Laura Lippman I've ever read. Where have I been? I couldn't put this down -- so many secrets and hidden agendas. I really liked that not all the characters were bad guys. Some were good people whose lives had taken bad turns.

Tessa B C
So Brave, Young, and Handsome by Leif Enger

3
I was caught up in the road trip. The story takes place in 1915 when automobiles were scarce and more people lived in the rural area of America. As Monte and Glendon head West and South, the landscape virtually becomes a character in the novel.

Lori
A Forgotten Place by Charles Todd

5
I was delighted to read an advance copy of the latest Bess Crawford mystery, A FORGOTTEN PLACE. I have loved the entire series, but I found this one the best in the series so far. It was a wonderful surprise to find a book deep in a series so exciting. I couldn't put the book down. The scenario was very suspenseful, and the locale was unique and fascinating. It also brought to life the difficulties of injured soldiers returning to their homes after the war. It could be read as a stand-alone book, although I recommend the entire series. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next.

Liza
The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn

3
A real page-turner, I put things aside to finish the last 50 pages. But, afterward, I thought "been there, done that", as the premise of a dubious female witness to a crime has been done before (THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN). If you liked THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, you'll love this book.

Donna
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan

5
Another story about the Nazi era, but with a different plot and written by a man. Normally we've been reading novels written by women.

Jane
The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

5
My favorite author has done it again with her latest book. I'm biased and will read everything she has written. I am a few books behind in her Winter series though. It's her first mystery and she really did a good job in my opinion. Take a wealthy family who has everything in life and mix in a little murder. This book takes place during the July 4th weekend with a wedding to take place, a maid of honor who turns up dead, and a bride who's very sheltered in life, lived in a small town who falls in love with a wealthy boy who she wonders if she loves. Thank you for another wonderful read Elin. I will continue to read your books as long as you keep on writing them.

Angela
Stars of Fortune by Nora Roberts

5
This book was great. It captured my attention and kept through to the end. It was about evil verses good. Six strangers must come together to stop Nerezza from finding the Stars of Fortune in order to get them to their rightful place. Read this book - you will not be disappointed.

Fifty Fifty by James Patterson and Candice Fox

4
Second in a new series starring Harriet Blue ("Harry" to her friends) a police officer Down Under who works on cases in the Australian desert while trying to free her brother, who she believes was framed for horrendous murders of college students. Believe me, Harry describes this new heroine a lot more than "Harriet" - she's a ballsy female - love her!!!

Betty
Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

4
A smart new thriller by Karin Slaughter. I had previously read her book COPTOWN and loved it, so was expecting that style of writing again. Boy, was I wrong! With PIECES OF HER Ms. Slaughter takes on a more complex story. What hasn’t changed is her superb storytelling.

Laura
The Sailweaver's Son by Jeff Minerd

5
This book has everything in it - adventure, humor, small love interest, and a strong female who is Asian. This book tackles topics with modern relevancy like bigotry, empathy, and compromise in a way that all readers will understand and identify with. Once you pick it up, you can't put it down!

Richard N B
Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis

1
Maybe I’m too far past my college years. Perhaps it’s the dry British humor. Or the 1950s setting and writing style (first published in 1954). But I just don’t see the humor in this. I struggled to finish and did so only because I had committed to a buddy read.

Seeing Red by Sandra Brown

4
I love reading Sandra Brown and SEEING RED was no exception.

Ariann
Origin by Dan Brown

3
Dan Brown is always a good storyteller with plenty of action and good characters. I was a little disappointed in his latest book. It ran on much too long with interminable discussions of art and science when I wanted to know what was happening with the story. There were the usual cliffhangers that continued to hang for multiple chapters while Langdon was informing us of the scenery, history, science, and art around Barcelona where the story took place. Meanwhile, I wanted to skip ahead to find out "who done it." Frankly, I thought the end was unsatisfactory although in keeping with the premise of the book. If you are a Dan Brown fan, you will like this. It is just not his best.

Another Side of Paradise by Sally Koslow

F. Scott Fitzgerald is always interesting to read about. This book tells of his love affair with Sheilah Graham. I loved the book.
