The kind of book that leaves you thinking about it long after you've finished.

dianne
The Goddesses by Swan Huntley

4
This was a very interesting, well-told story, and the first book I've read by this author. The setting is Hawaii, and the characters feel so real, I felt they jumped right off the page. One incident in the book seemed a bit contrived, and wasn't really dealt with like I feel it should have been. The author just skimmed right over it. However, all in all I really enjoyed this book - quite a lot!

Debra
The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth

5
A well-written, character-driven, suburban drama and mystery. How well do any of us know our neighbors? What goes on behind closed doors? You are invited to spend some time in Pleasant Court and get to know a cul-de-sac full of neighbors who are trying to hide a variety of secrets and imperfections from each other. The storyline was filled with secrets and lies, choices and consequences, second chances and new beginnings. I loved how the relationships between the neighbors started out as superficial and casual, but after going through various life struggles, they evolved into comfortable, caring friends. Well done and well worth the time.

Jill
The Hush by John Hart

2
Very disappointed in this sequel to his THE LAST CHILD. I loved THE LAST CHILD and this one was more science-fiction and did not seem to follow the first novel. I have read other books by him and liked those, too.

linda
Eternal Life by Dana Horn

3
Very interesting premise, which kept me reading, but I can't say I liked the story or the characters that much.

Nadine
The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman

5
A novel that opens in 1918 Australia - the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife who make one devastating choice that forever changes two worlds. Loved it...couldn't put it down. The story is heartbreakingly beautiful and while the ending acknowledges the pain, it also offers hope. This book is in my top 10 of all time. I'll be thinking about the story for quite a while.

Helen
The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

4
Loved the book -- very intriguing story.

Annmarie
The Wife by Alafair Burke

5
Great read!!

Alice
The Girl Who Lived by Christopher Greyson

4
I think it’s a great read but very nerve-wracking. I needed to put it down at intervals to relax. The main character was likable to a point then I just wanted to shake her into reality. I recommend it but it’s not my favorite book.

Elizabeth
11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
I have never read a Stephen King book before because I don't like scary books. I heard this one recommended a few times on the "What Should I Read Next" podcast so I thought I would try it. He is such a great writer and I loved the time-traveler aspect of the book. Especially when he would talk about how easy it was to do things without all you need in today's world.

Janet
Girl Unbroken by Regina Calcaterra

4
Horrific true story of a family’s unspeakable childhood.

Elizabeth
Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo

3
Interesting to read about another culture but couldn't bring myself to like any of the characters. Too many selfish characters.

Phyllis
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

5
Read this about four years ago and finding I still had it, read it again and enjoyed it the second time. Set in the 1920s, a conservative woman accompanies a spirited 15-year-old to New York to attend a dancing school. Cora, the chaperone and Louise, the young girl, find after spending five weeks together, their lives are forever changed.

Ruth
First Impressions by Charlie Lovett

5
Outstanding book about books. Have recommended it highly to others.

Melanie
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

5
This is one of the best books I’ve read in years! Kristin Hannah has outdone herself! The story is compelling and the scenery in Alaska is so vividly described you can picture yourself there. I highly recommend!

Nancy
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

4
If this book were written by anyone else, I'd give it five stars. But it's written by the author of THE NIGHTINGALE, which is one of my all-time favorites, and I don't think anything she could have written would equal that. This book is wonderful, however. It's about a Vietnam vet and POW who comes home with PTSD and, unable to deal in the mainstream, takes his wife and daughter to live off the grid in Alaska. Instead of escaping the trauma, it only gets worse. This is a tale of love and survival. The descriptions of Alaska are breathtaking, but, at times, frightening, and leave the reader wondering how far you would go -- literally and figuratively -- to survive.

Richard N B
The Lost City of the Monkey God by Douglas Preston

4
I was mesmerized by this adventure story, as Preston recounts the expedition’s efforts to find these ruins in the dense jungle, plagued by weather, poisonous snakes, and biting insects. Preston also gives equal time to political discourse and environmental impact. And the medical mystery of aftereffects of their time in the jungle was equally fascinating, and horrifying.

Judy
Artemis by Andy Weir

4
Fun and fascinating read! Artemis is a colony on the moon and with the lack of atmosphere and gravity, life can get pretty hectic. Our heroine is always looking for some way to make money...smuggling things like cigars to the moon with the help of a friend on earth. She takes on a project for the promise of one million coins of moon currency. Won't do a spoiler but the twist is wonderful.

Lori
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan

5
Fascinating, mostly true story of a 17-year-old in Italy during the German occupation in WWII. Not a happily-ever-after tale that I found informative as I did not previously know much about Italy's involvement in the war.

Angela
The Escape Artist by Brad Meltzer

5
The true joy came after I opened the book and read the first chapter. Then, I was over the moon that I had this book in my hands. It’s the story of a woman, Nola, who is believed to be one of the victims of a military plane crash in Alaska. I don’t think this is a spoiler because there would not be a book without Nola, but IT ISN’T HER BODY. The medical examiner Zig knows it isn’t her because he knew her as a child and her scar is missing. Get ready for a page-turning ride as Nola, tries not to really work with Zig, and Zig tries very hard to help Nola, tries to determine who was behind the plane crash, who was the target of the crash and who might still be after Nola. I loved this book and it will likely be a bestseller of the year.

Rob
Camino Island by John Grisham

5
I waited to read CAMINO ISLAND and just finished it. It's his best in many years and I hope Grisham can finds a way to a sequel.

Elizabeth
Sunburn by Laura Lippman

2
This is not a genre I usually read so that may be affecting my view, but I found the writing a bit stilted and the characters rather cliched and not quite believable. The main character, Poly/Pauline, was most unlikable, too.

Bonnie
Smoketown by Mark Whitaker

4
Wonderful nonfiction about the Black Renaissance in Pittsburgh in the early 20th century. If you're interested in American history, Black history, Pittsburgh, music (especially jazz), politics, sports, then there's something in this book for you. Very interesting and enlightening.

Trezeline
A Gentleman In Moscow by Amor Towles

5
Very good read.

Pauline
My Italian Bulldozer by Alexander McCall Smith

3
Quick, fun read about a food writer whose only option is to rent a bulldozer to drive to Tuscany. Yes, he writes his book but three women interrupt the process!

Myrna
The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict

4
An eye-opener about the effect of Albert Einstein on his wife Mileva's career and self-esteem.

Jud
The Savior's Game by Sean Chercover

2
THE SAVIOR'S GAME by Sean Chercover is the concluding volume of the Daniel Byrne trilogy. While Chercover did a great job with the first two books, the third book isn’t as good. I found the plot to be somewhat rambling and disconnected from the previous books. It was almost like the author tried to take the story in a completely new direction while forgetting he was writing a trilogy. There are large portions of the book that seem to have no connection to the primary story line of the trilogy. Honestly, this book was a disappointment, which is why I can only give it 2/5 stars.

Lana
Caught in the Revolution: Petrograd, Russia 1917 - A World on the Edge by Helen Rappaport

4
I am fascinated with Russian history and have read many nonfiction books regarding it. This one, from the perspective of civilian foreign journalists and government officials living in St. Petersburg at the time of the February and October revolutions, for me was better at demonstrating more intimately the suffering of the common people, as well as the brutality of the Bolsheviks. Other volumes seemed to focus more on royalty, the military, or the political. For some reason that I can't pinpoint this author wrote in a way that showed how awful the October revolution really was. Her writing was more human and less analytical.

FRAN
Saboteur by Andrew Gross

5
Author of THE ONE MAN has written a thriller/historical fiction about the heavy water production in Norway during WWII, a heinous threat to the allied forces in Europe. Good description of Norway's weather and geography, and determination of the Norwegian people.

Jud
The Armageddon File by Stephen Coonts

4
THE ARMAGEDDON FILE by Stephen Coonts is the 8th entry in the series spun off of the popular Jake Grafton series. Coonts’ novels are full of action that keep the reader engaged and this one is no exception. It is literally ripped from the headlines of just over a year ago, as if Coonts was able to predict with uncanny accuracy what the result of the 2016 election would be. I enjoyed this book immensely, with its larger-than-life characters and multiple twists and turns. I would definitely recommend this book to nearly everyone and give it 4/5 stars.

Sharon
The Yes Brain: How to Cultivate Courage, Curiosity and Resilience in Your Child by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson

4
Excellent read for parents and educators!

Linda
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

4
I read this, gave it to a friend who loved it and gave it back to me to re-read. I had just started it when the Parkland, Florida school shooting happened. This book is about a school shooting. In usual Picoult style, she approaches this social issue from all angles. And much like Anna Quindlen (another fave author of mine), her writing style and her voice help me see situations differently than my initial view. Bullying was a major theme in this story. It is a love story, a parenting story, and it is a story of tragedy that ends in brutal transformation of innocent lives. Worth the read, but I think it would be hard for anyone with direct/indirect personal experience with such horrors.

Matt
Munich by Robert Harris

4
A novel based on a real event, the beginning of WWII. A thriller even though the outcome is already known. My biggest complaint is that the descriptions of everything are too detailed. Otherwise, a good read.

Sandy
Deep Down True by Juliette Fay

3
Not the best I have ever read, but not too bad. Newly divorced Dana Stellgarten has always been unfailingly nice, even to telemarketers, but now her temper is wearing thin. Money is tight, her kids are reeling from their dad's departure, and her Goth teenage niece has just landed on her doorstep. As she enters the post divorce dating game and is befriended by the town queen bee, Dana finds that the tension between being true to yourself and being liked isn't easy.

Judy O.
Promise by Minrose Gwin

4
On Palm Sunday of 1936 a tornado hit Tupelo, MS causing massive damage and loss of life. We meet a black family - Dovey, Dreama, and baby Promise, who are left injured and homeless. We also meet a white family, Jo, Alice, Mort and baby Tommy McNabb, who are also affected by the terrible tornado. Both babies come up missing until Jo finds Tommy stuck in a bush outside the home. Or is it Tommy? This is historical fiction about a true event, and don't miss the pictures at the end of the book that show damage from the actual tornado.

Shelley
The Map That Leads to You by J. P. Monninger

5
A perfect easy-read book with a little romance, a lot of travel, and a dash of mystery. Heather and her friends take a backpacking trip after college before their "real" lives begin. On a train from Paris to Amsterdam, Heather meets Jack. He's wonderful in all the right ways. They all continue to explore Europe and Heather's relationship with Jack deepens. They have just the right amount of witty banter and creative adventures to make the reader want to be right there with them. 2/3 of the way through the book will give a tug to your heartstrings. Descriptions are great, emotions feel valid. I can see this book becoming a movie.

Jayne
The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn

5
This book was a page-turner. Suspense built from the beginning and kept me guessing all the way through. A great read - great plot, complex characters, well written.

Kay
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

5
A charming story of what might happen if one forgets ten years of her life.

Elaine
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

4
Beautifully-written novel about a well-to-do family with four children, a compulsive mother and a businessman husband. She adores her two oldest “perfect” children, accepts her next child for his brilliance and musical ability, and complains constantly about and to Izzy, her youngest. Everything changes when she rents a small house she owns to an artist (photographer) and her teenage daughter. Mia and Pearl buy furniture and clothes at thrift shops and move frequently, until her daughter meets up with the family and Izzy becomes enthralled with Mia, who never judges her. When the interactions between the children lead to tragedy and misunderstanding, everyone’s life changes.

Francisca E B
Chocolate Chocolate by Frances Park and Ginger Park

3
Subtitle: The True Story of Two Sisters, Tons of Treats, and the Little Shop That Could. It’s a charming memoir, but I found it repetitious. While I admit to self-medicating with chocolate, reading about that in chapter after chapter is less satisfying. Still, they have an interesting story to tell, and I really liked their relationship with their mother and with their customers.

Valerie
Bachelor Girl by Kim Van Alkemade

5
Excellent read!!! New York City,1930s, secrecy, power, love. This novel has it all!

vera
The Sun is Gone by Jodee Prouse

5
So hard to be in a home where alcohol takes over. Many a night when things got so bad, Mom would take the two small kids and leave, sometime ending up in a low rate motel, her mom's house, or just park car out of sight so husband couldn't see them. After years of this they finally separated. Most would think a child going through this would stay away from alcohol. But he become very hooked on this. When you don't admit problem, it can make it hard on you and your family. Times and times out of hospital and detox. Right back and even worst. Very heartbreaking book but makes the reader think.

Matt
A Death in Live Oak by James Grippando

5
A story with many twists that is hard to put down. Interesting comments on race relations. This book will keep you guessing to the end.

Donna
The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown

5
This is a well-researched and well-written account of the famous Donner Party, a group of 87 men, women and children that dared to "go west". This horrific journey cost about half of them their lives. Though this book was a grueling ordeal to read due to the subject, it is also a story of hope, despair, courage and the determination to survive. I will not be able to forget this book.

ILene
Falling by Elizabeth Jane Howard

5
A great relationship book that starts with Henry Kent, a late middle-aged man, who we think is a poor-soul gardener, mistreated since childhood, and Daisy a famous writer of books and plays, a mature woman of early 60s that has great success with her writing career but lacks good choices when picking husbands. After her two failed marriages, the two meet and start a warm relationship. Other people enter and things have a way of changing. This is my third Elizabeth Jane Howard book. Each one is different and I can't wait until I read another.

Lynn
News of the World by Paulette Jiles

4
Now I know why this book is on so many "best" lists. It deserves to be. Loved it and will be passing my copy to ALL my reading friends.

Lynn
In This Grave Hour (A Maisie Dobbs Novel) by Jacqueline Winspear

4
I have read this entire series (in order) and think this is the best yet!

Kathy
Midnight in Europe by Alan Furst

3
Christian is a lawyer working and living in Paris but he is a Spaniard. He is recruited to help acquire ammunition and weapons for the resistance during 1940s. The end of the book is very exciting.

Lois
The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

4
A powerful story of the relationship between a mistress and her slave. Both strive for a sense of being equal in the eyes of the law.

Rosa
The Wife by Alafair Burke

5
This is a psychological thriller that had me guessing and second-guessing, and I was still surprised by the ending. The plot brings together many events from current headlines - sexual misconduct by celebrities, the "good wife" who stands by her fallen man, children who are on the autistic spectrum. Burke's writing is intelligent and the plot is well crafted. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and intend to read her previous work.

Susan
The Great Halifax Explosion by John U. Bacon

5
I really liked THE GREAT HALIFAX EXPLOSION by John U. Bacon. Bacon did an excellent job of researching and writing the book. He had a great reference section This is the second book I have read about the Halifax explosion. I highly recommend this book to readers who like well-written and researched nonfiction.

Thomas
Sunburn by Laura Lippman

2
It was a good book to read.

Thomas
The City of Endless Night by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

5
It was a very good book. I really liked reading it.

Deby
Lilli de Jong by Janet Benton

4
Wonderful book about the shame placed on unwed mothers and their struggle to survive with no support. Based in the 1880s in Philadelphia.

Barbara
Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict

5
I had always envisioned Andrew Carnegie as an older man who provided libraries and funds for other philanthropic causes. This book brought Carnegie to life as a young man and it was fascinating to watch his interaction with his family and his business dealings.

Barbara
The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict

5
What a powerful book! I will never be able to think of Einstein in the same way again. He may have been a brilliant scientist, but his cruelty towards his first wife, and his deceptive way of stealing her work without giving her credit, was infuriating. I wonder if these events had taken place in today's world would Mileva Maric have tolerated such cruel and shabby behavior.

Ivy
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

4
Not everything is what it appears to be in this American marriage. The voices of Roy, Celestial and Andre each show strong yet vulnerable aspects of who they are and the choices they are forced to make.

Rocky
The Making of the Wizard of Oz by Aljean Harmetz

4
Ms. Harmetz has written a comprehensive volume on a wonderful film. Broken down into sections based on the work involved, including actors, art department (further broken down into special effects for example), and other production areas, it's at times more of a reference guide than a truly readable book. It is disheartening to read the author's unkind references to Judy Garland, well-known for her wonderful voice, as well as her addictions to pills and five husbands. Calling the sixteen-year-old Garland by several negative terms, including, I believe, "dumpy," nowadays this wouldn't be as acceptable and it's actually body shaming. I recommend the book for fans of Hollywood history.

Judy
Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict

4
Sent to America by her parents from Ireland, our heroine finds herself in the home of the Carnegie family. She has never served as a maid, but, quickly picks up her duties. Then, she meets Andrew Carnegie, they begin discussing books, meeting in parks to talk. This becomes important to both of them as their feelings grow. Will their attachment to each other succeed? I'll let you find that out when you read the book.

Tessa B C
The Good Lord Bird by James McBride

3
3.5 stars. McBride looks at John Brown and Harpers Ferry through the lens of a “freed” slave, Henry Shackleford (known as Onion). I’ve seen reviews that compare McBride to Mark Twain, and I guess I see that here – an adventure tale that is about a serious event/issue, but still includes room for humor.

Dorothy
Fairytales by Danielle Steel

2
The father dies leaves everything to his daughter but has the new wife stay in house until the daughter is two years old in another eighteen months. Stepmother takes over and wants money to leave. Not worth the time.

Jud
The Amendment Killer by Ronald S. Barak

5
One of the best books I've read this year, this book centers around Article 5 of the Constitution and whether it is all inclusive or just limits how the Government can amend the Constitution. While this case is being tried by SCOTUS, a Justice's granddaughter is kidnapped and her fate rests on the outcome of the case. This book doesn't disappoint.

Thomas
Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier

5
I really enjoyed reading this book very much.

Pauline
Government Zero by Michael Savage

4
Michael Savage is convinced that Western Civilization is at risk and he offers 40 actions to save America. He is anti-Obama and against Socialists. He believes the Progressive agenda will crush freedom in America. There has been a Progressive Islamist take over. The left won't like what he says but they should read this book. Savage wrote the book in 2015, but all should read it now.

Pam
Beartown by Fredrik Backman

5
Absolutely loved this book. It sucked you in and lead you through an intense series of events and characters. Highly recommend.

shirley
The Golem of Hollywood by Jonathan Kellerman

3
Okay, but not my favorite from either the father or the son.

Robin
Agent in Place by Mark Greaney

4
The Gray Man, Violator, Court Gentry, no matter what you call him, he is dangerous. He is an assassin, but one with a moral compass. When everyone else fails, he can get things done. This time he is to kidnap a Spanish model who is in Paris for a modeling assignment during fashion week. Bianca Medina also happens to be the mistress of Syria’s President Azzam. And she is the mother of his only son. The FSEU hopes to use her knowledge to bring down the president, but Bianca refuses to talk unless they can bring her son out of Syria. Not an easy job, especially when Court can’t trust any of the players. Mark Greaney delivers another brilliant story that will leave you gasping for breath at the high stakes intrigue.

Robin
Miz Scarlet and the Bewildered Bridegroom by Sara Barton

4
A cozy mystery, a folksy ‘whodunit’, no matter what you call it, author Sara Barton, has created an entertaining cast of characters for her Miz Scarlet series. In MIZ SCARLET AND THE BEWILDERED BRIDEGROOM, Scarlet is having a wedding at Four Acorns Inn. While the wedding plans move forward, they are soon overshadowed by dastardly deeds. But who’s behind it and why? With Miz Scarlet (she reminds me of Miss Marple) on the case, answers will be found and the ne’er-do-well apprehended, with her troupe of friends and family providing back-up. Barton takes the readers on a fun romp with her mystery that will keep you scratching your head and trying to figure out what will happen next.

Sandra
The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve

4
One of Anita Shreve's best books yet! The story of a young wife with two small children and another on the way who faces a night of terror running from a fire that consumes their house and everything else on the Maine shore. After she is rescued she has to face a life with nothing...no husband, no money, no house. She struggles to survive and find a place for her family.

ROSEMARIE
Every Note Played by Lisa Genova

5
Just finished EVERY NOTE PLAYED by Lisa Genova. I have read all of her books. This one is a very sad story but it's not just about dying...it's also about living, forgiving, loving and understanding. I recommend it to you if you have the strength to get through the details of this deadly disease, ALS.

Julie
This Could Hurt by Jillian Medoff

3
This is about the people in a human resources department in New York City who have survived several rounds of downsizing, with each coping in his/her own way. You get to know the people and how they react to a new crisis affecting their boss. It is a realistic viewpoint as to the way business seems to react these days, but also as to how this affects people. The treatment of the boss stretches the imagination, but is touching, as are the friendships formed and lost. I liked the book overall.

Diana
A Dublin Student Doctor by Patrick Taylor

4
This book is the sixth in a wonderful series. Once I start reading each book, I don't put the book down until it's finished. These books are very entertaining, and I'm glad they were recommended to me. If you enjoy James Herriot or Richard Gordon these books are for you. This book gives you the background of Dr. Fingal O'Reily. It goes through his student days and into the beginning of the second world war when many had to put their lives and studies on hold to go to the front lines.

Susan
Our Little Secret by Roz Nay

5
Really loved it. Could not put it down. I had to find out what would happen next. Loved the main protagonist voice - well done.

Brady
Spilled Milk by K. L. Randis

5
What a powerful story this is. I thought it was a memoir/autobiography, but at the end it mentions "novel". The author is sly in a good way as she develops the real gist of the story in subtle ways and not until the story really get underway. I won't tell you the net result of what the main story is as it is wonderful the way events occur and develop as time goes by. The main character starts out as a very young girl and winds up as a well-educated purposeful woman of much talent in her field. A great read for sure.

Richard N B
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

5
Well this book cements Amor Towles in my list of favorite authors. I really like the Count and the way he leads his life. His accommodations may be limited, and he may be confined to the hotel, but his life is certainly NOT limited. They may take his possessions, they may restrict his movements, but they cannot make him less of a gentleman.

Lory
The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn

4
I liked the intrigue. I liked the suspense. I liked the bit of a different storyline. I also liked the way Finn formed Anna's unreliability as the different events unfolded, even though I was able to identify her ongoing delusion prior to it being revealed (which btw, NO therapist can ever disclose such personal information to anyone, even a police officer - ummmm... FERPA!). It was interesting and warped, especially with Anna being a psychologist and ironically suffering from trauma and symptoms she used to (and still attempted to) treat. These aspects definitely drew me in deeper to this thriller and tale. I didn't see the end coming in quite so much detail and it did seem a bit contrived in order to create necessary shock value.

Kathy
Midnight in Europe by Alan Furst

3
Christian is a lawyer living in Paris but he is a Spanish citizen. He is asked to help the Spanish resistance by obtaining arms and ammunition. The ending of the novel is very exciting.

Leanna
The Rooster Bar by John Grisham

5
I just love Grisham books. This one doesn’t disappoint, although I have read less than favorable reviews! As usual, he focus on a corrupt subject, this being a bad law school. Students take the challenge and go after them. It kept me binge reading, so that’s a good sign!

Marcia
The Recipe Box by Viola Shipman

4
I love his books. This did not disappoint.

Jill
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan

4
I liked that this was based on the true story of Pino Lella when the Nazis invaded Italy. Pino helps Jews escape by leading them over the Alps. Pino lives in Milan with his family and is recruited to be a driver for Hitler’s left hand man, General Leyers. This is also a love story of Pino and Anna, who is a maid for General Leyers' mistress.

Michelle
Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

5
A must-read! A definite page-turner about a family torn apart, children essentially kidnapped by a corrupt orphanage operation run by a woman who snatched children from poor families to sell them to wealthy families for profit. What results is a chain of events that change the children forever and in turn their family history. Rill’s horrifying, brave story will forever stand out in my memory.

Ruth
The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth

5
Great book on domestic fiction!

Sharon
The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn

4
Although I thought this was just going to be another psychological thriller, I must confess the twists and turns kept me totally engrossed in the book. Never did I anticiapte the ending!

Eva
Victoria by Daisy Goodwin

5
Loved it. Described time period perfectly. Well-developed characters.

Dorothy
I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes With Death by Maggie O'Farrell

5
Seventeen beautifully written true stories of the author's life. Her tales grab you into her life as she has faced life and death 17 times. An emotional page-turner.

Kathy
Love and Other Consolation Prizes by Jamie Ford

5
A well-told story set in Seattle in the early 1900s and in the 1960s. It tells the story of a young Chinese boy sent to the U.S. and eventually auctioned off at the World's Fair. He finds love and family in the most surprising place. Ford's description of the politics of the early 1900s is based on fact, but the story is Jamie Ford's creation.

Lee
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

5
Ms. Sepetys writes about the Wilhelm Gusthorf? You’ve never heard of it? You, me, and a million other people have not, but it is the single greatest tragedy in maritime history. Some may think Ms. Sepetys added too much sugar to the true story of such a catastrophe but I think she handled it superbly. Love the unusual structure. Highly recommend.

Susan
The Pecan Man by Cassie Dandridge Selleck

5
The human emotions woven into this intriguing story of a widow and a homeless old man kept me wanting to drop everything to finish this book. A murder, deceit, and lies to protect people who were not only workers but cherished friends, made me realize the depths people will go to so that others are not hurt or devastated.

Nora
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

3
A very disturbing book that was also difficult for me to read. I found I had to read it during the day as I did not want to have nightmares. Someone from our book club asked me if I thought we should read it, but I did not feel right recommending it as we have both men and women in our group. All this does not mean I didn't enjoy the book!! I felt it was well written and it certainly held my attention until the end.

Nora
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simion

4
Very impressed with the writing style and the sense of humor of the author. I vacillated between feeling sad for him and laughing at the way he tells about his strict habits and ways of doing things. The Wife Project was so funny, but when he realizes that he was trying to find a woman who would put up with him that was very profound.

Roberta
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

5
The author writes a compelling story of young girl growing up in the very different atmosphere of rural Alaska in the 1970s. The wildness of Alaska is brought alive by vivid descriptions. Despite tragedy and violence, the tale is ultimately one of hope.

Donna
Girl Unknown by Karen Perry

3
David's life is good. He is married with two teenage children and he's teaching at a university. His world is turned upside down when a young student informs him hat she's his daughter from a relationship over sixteen years ago. He wants to do the right thing, but what are her motives?

Sally-Jo
The Sleepwalker by Chris Bohjalian

5
Chris is an awesome writer. His characters deal with life-altering situation that hit home. The stories pull you in to relate and root for his protagonist. This was a page-turner.

Nancy
Flying at Night by Rebecca L. Brown

4
I really enjoyed reading this book. A young mother is caught between her autistic son and a father who has had a stoke. The real story is about how the son and his grandfather help each other. I thought it was a great read.

Lisa
The Three-Year Swim Club by Julie Checkoway

5
If you liked THE BOYS IN THE BOAT, this one is for you. A true story with interesting characters, this book sheds a light on both the good and the bad of the time period.

Pat
The Bad Daughter by Joy Fielding

5
Talk about a page-turner - I couldn’t put this book down. Haven’t read a book this good in quite a while.

Helen

A good story but nothing special in this genre.

Helen
Soul Keeping by John Ortberg

5
Outstanding perspective on the topic.

Sherrie
Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse by Faith Sullivan

4
A beautiful story which wraps you right in sadness, happiness, loss and joy. A roller-coaster of emotion and in between, Nell finds solace in books and the silence surrounding her while reading.

Elizabeth
How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn

5
HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY, first published in 1939, deserves a comeback. It is a wonderful novel that is almost forgotten nowadays as readers try to keep up with all the novels currently being published. This book came to the United States in 1940 and won the National Book Award for favorite novel that year. The 1941 edition was in my parents’ bookcase for many years before I finally picked it up to read. Before long, I was asking myself what took me so long because it could be the best classic I ever read. The story, narrated by Huw Morgan, is about years of his family’s life in a Welsh mining community during the reign of Queen Victoria. As an older man, he has finally decided to leave and is reminiscing all his coming-of-age tales.

Rhonda
The Painted Queen by Elizabeth Peters and Joan Hess

5
Reading this book is like visiting a friend for the last time. Joan Hess completed Elizabeth Peters' last book.

Susan
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

5
This book has many twists and turns. Just when you think you might have it figured out it takes a different turn. It tells the story of a marriage and separation from many different views.

Lynn
City of Thieves by David Benioff

3
I've read several books about WWII's Siege of Leningrad. This one is well written and entertaining, if not believable.

Elizabeth
Sunburn by Laura Lippman

2
Not my favorite genre. I did not like the main character at all and found the plot just a bit too predictable.

Jane
The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen

4
A young woman discovers her late father's history in a small town in Tuscany in World War II. She goes to the town and her father's life there unfolds.

Jeanne
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

4
Very moving story.

Emily
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt

4
A wild and fun ride through the Gold Rush, literally. and figuratively. Great page-turning story told very well, with violence and very dark humor. The characters were kind of lovable in a bloody assassin way. However, no one you'd like to hang out with in any reality.

Kay
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

5
How would you feel if you forgot ten years of your life??

Rio Grande Fall by Rudolfo Anaya

Book two in the Sonny Baca mystery series is set during the Albuquerque, NM Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. I like magical realism, in general, but this series has gone too far. I wasn’t interested and all the spiritualism detracted from the plot (what little there was of it).

Stephanie
Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks

5
My book club is reading this book for April. I read it years ago and knew that I loved it. I don’t usually enjoy re-reading books but this is an exception.

Matt
The Demon Crown by James Rollins

4
I have never read a Sigma Force novel before this, so I was working with a handicap. It was assumed that you already know the major characters (both good and evil). But I muddled through. I picked this book because it was about insects and as an entomologist I like to see if the authors get it right. Rollins did a fairly good job. The plot involves an attempt to take over the world using a wasp. It is of course fast-paced with lots of action. It is also rather long, but you will keep reading so it goes fast.

Miriam
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

4
I liked this more than I thought I would. Good mystery that keeps you reading. Liked our heroine Lo.

Jud
Legacies by F. Paul Wilson

4
A great series featuring a guy who relies on his wits and cleverness to "fix" things for clients. In this book he helps a woman who inherits a house with a valuable secret that some will stop at nothing to get.

Linda

Close childhood friends Richard Audley and Callie Brooks were despaired of by their families. To save Callie from being married off to a much older man, Richard suggests they elope. One of her sisters told on her and they were caught and severely punished by their hateful fathers. Richard’s father told Callie’s father that he didn’t care if Richard was killed as he had other sons. They started beating and kicking him. Callie agreed to her father’s plans for her to save Richard’s life and he was transported instead of hanged. Love finds a way for these two, and great friendship developing into love is the best and lasting kind. There is a little history blurb about the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812.

Just the Funny Parts by Nell Scovell

5
Scovell has written for TV sitcoms, movies, talk shows (the sad truth about working on Letterman), and co-wrote Sheryl Sandberg's LEAN IN. I read this memoir in two sittings- it's that fascinating.

Liza
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

5
Great writing. The story of a couple married less than a year when the husband is imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. When he is released, after 5 years, the marriage has changed. Drastically. A great story, very well written. Highly recommended.

Liza
Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant

4
I read this slim volume in one afternoon. I enjoyed the character development and the science. A ship carrying marine biologists and a television crew of a cable channel (similar to The Discovery Channel) travels to the Mariana Tranch, the deepest part of the ocean, to prove or disprove the existence of mermaids. Do they exist? Spoiler alert: They do. And they're hungry. A fast, fun sci-fi read.

A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline

I enjoyed the storyline.

Debbie
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

4
Great storytelling. Celeste Ng enjoys exploring family relationships and choices that people make.

Elizabeth
Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier

5
Gripping character study due to the juxtaposition of Gia who is in prison and Kaiser the detective. This is one novel which is gripping and suspenseful without being over the top.

Elizabeth
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannan

4
A great story; outstanding descriptive portrayals of the untamed wilderness of Alaska in the 1970s. Poor decision-making seems to be at the heart of the characters' behaviors for whatever reasons/excuses the characters give. As vast as the Alaskan landscape, so is the scope of human experience presented in the book. Sadness, joy, love, hate, hope, fear, danger, truth, lies, pride, and forgiveness along with universal themes of coming of age, youthful rebellion, teen pregnancy, jealousy, spousal abuse, mental illness, alcohol abuse, strength and unity among women, family dynamics, status of women, nature vs. civilization, wealth, and connections, & survival of the human spirit lend to the tenseness, pathos & attraction felt by the reader.

Love, Life and Elephants by Daphne Sheldrick

4
Subtitle: An African Love Story. This memoir takes the reader from Sheldrick’s birth and childhood through her teen years, and first love, on to the love of her life, David Sheldrick, and the work they accomplished together in saving elephants and other endangered wildlife. She writes in a frank and open manner, describing her missteps as openly as her triumphs.

V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

4
Very complex plot but it all comes together eventually in a surprising way. It's a good read.

Suzy
The Hope Chest by Viola Shipman

5
It's a romance. It's heartwarming. Some will think it is too "sweet" but I found it just right...it's about a couple who have been married for forty-nine years and...I don't tell spoilers! Seriously though, I thought Mr. Rouse (whose pen name is Viola Shipman) wrote a book that was very touching, no sex and raunch, but still very romantic. I cried at least three times and stayed up all night last night finishing this book. It's so much fun to discover a new writer, with a good editor, who tells a lovely story rich in details. It's obviously written by someone who loves nature and is gifted at writing descriptions of a coastal Michigan town and an artist who lives there. I can't wait to read his new books!

This is the first in a series and I love them all. The characters are introduced and are realistic.

Sandra
A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny

5
Every book in this series by Canadian author Louise Penny is equally wonderful. There is something very special about her characters and her writing that makes a reader wish to savoir her books rather than have the experience end.

Karen

Great book, very well written!

Sandy
Before and Again by Barbara Delinsky

5
I received this book in the mail as an uncorrected bound manuscript and it will be on sale 6/26/2018. I enjoyed it very much and was glad it was a big fat book!!! The more I got into the book the better it got. In a split second, Mackenzie Cooker's life changes completely - she loses her daughter in an accident she caused as well as her husband and the world she loved. Working as a makeup artist under another name, serving out her probation, she's trying to put the pieces of her life back together...until a close friend's need forces her out of the shadows. Put this one your list of books to read this summer!!!

Death Masks (The Dresden Files, Book 5) by Jim Butcher

5
I tend to shy away from series, as I find most to become repetitive and dull after the first 2 or 3 books. This is not the case with The Dresden Files. While book 4 (SUMMER KNIGHT) was not quite up to par with the previous three installments, I wasn't ready to "break up" with Harry Dresden just yet. I'm glad I stuck with him, because DEATH MASKS did not disappoint! This book takes quite a darker turn than the previous volumes. It involves a stolen Shroud of Turin and pits our hero against a group of totally evil nasties. Some scenarios were absolutely terrifying! The writing is strong, and it is an exciting read.

Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser

4
Neighbor women (Clara, Kristin, Randi, Rhoda, and Izzy) enjoy a girls night out only to discover that one of them has gone missing overnight! Where has Kristin disappeared to, and why? Does her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Paul, know anything about why she left? Each woman is, of course, wrapped up in her own life, but once they discover Kristin—and her twins, Abby and Aaron—are missing, they will do anything to help find her! After Kristin's disappearance, the women all felt "off balance" and Izzy "supposed scrutiny could do that to a group of people." But, alas, "in Yellow Springs, good vibes bubble up," so surely Kristin and the twins will be found safe and sound, won't they?!? Read this suspenseful story to find out!

Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance

4
Subtitle: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. Vance is a former Marine, a graduate of Ohio State and Yale Law School. But getting to his current place in life was a struggle, given his family upbringing. He is brutally honest looking at his life and at the culture of the working poor. He reviews government policies and offers insight into how the working poor themselves might take steps to give the next generation a fighting chance. This memoir is both brutally honest and movingly tender.

Crossing on the Paris by Dana Gynther

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was intriguing, heartbreaking and suspenseful at times for me. I loved how the storylines were woven together and also showed the differences on several different levels. I will be looking for more of this author's work.

All the Beautiful Girls by Elizabeth J Church

3
I felt the author tried to address too many issues (child abuse, sexual abuse, Vietnam War, the Las Vegas microcosm, etc) in the story. I guess I started the book with expectations of a lighter story, so I was a bit disappointed. But other people seem to really like it! Thank you to the publisher and Bookreporter for the book.

Every Note Played by Lisa Genova

5
I have read all of Lisa’s novels, each based on the main character having a debilitating illness. This novel focuses on ALS. It was very informative, and while neither of the main characters was particularly likable, I was engrossed in the story and in learning more about this terrible disease, its impacts and how the characters dealt with it. I read the ending through tears.
